This is why Amoeba is so important and their youtube channel is so incredible .. I have been aware of Paul Okenfold since I visited London in the early 2000's and purchased some of his music .. .but I'd never heard the man speak ... hearing him break down these records and share his insight into music was so enlightening.. such a window into him as an artist ... this is why I love this series .... well done Amoeba !!!
Oakey, Sasha, and Digweed were instrumental in shaping progressive house in the 90's, and early 2000's. Their Global Underground releases are some of the greatest mixes ever released, and I still play them regularly! This is a great upload! Nice work!
Do you realize the music or club music or the records he plays with Madonna is going to be forgettable very very soon he’s talking about Jimi Hendrix like a complete moron there’s no way Jimmy rips off Shuggie
Best upload on this channel in a long time for me. Oakenfold is, without a doubt, a legend. Part of the Mt. Rushmore of house music for me. Wonderful video. Thank you! 🙏
I've been listening to Oakenfold since the 90's, and don't think I've ever heard his voice before. He honestly sounds wasted here. That, or a lifetime of substances has caught up with him. Still love his music though, and seems to be a great guy other than that
Lovely person, we grew up watching and listening to this dj. Just a side, he looks like a Matt Damon and sounds a bit like Ozzy yeah? Love this man, what energy!
My surprise record was Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Record art was amazing, I had to buy after I found out the Dap-Kings were Any Winehouse backing band too.
@@Usiris23 Mine was Magic Sword's first album that I bought without listening to it. They turned out to be a badass synthwave band. Their record cover was just black with a sword on it. No regrets.
As a graphic designer in the 90's I knew which electronic music CDs would be good purely based on the artwork. Now 3d art and fonts are easy to do but back then it took a damn good artist to create cool rave art
fun interview ,great guy, funny and yes i also love record stores and it changes people, when my son was around 14 i would play hank williams a lot ,my son Ryan never cared then one day we drove to amoeba records walked in and they were playing hank williams, ryan goes DaD they are playing hank ,haha when we walked out that day ryan was a hank williams fan,hes now 28 and loves hank and old country-wow1 it took a trip to the record store to turn him into a life long fan-Thanks Amoeba👍Shuggie was a major talent but one that has never gotten the resect he deserves.nice post with Paul Oakenfold, cool guy👌🌻🇺🇦
OMFG I GOT GOOSEBUMPS!!! I HAVE LISTENED TO HIM, LOVED HIS WORK ALL MY LIFE BUT NEVER SAW HIM ON SCREEN PHYSICALLY OR HEARD HIM EVER! WOOOOWWW!!!! THE MAN WHO REALLY HAS AN AMMMAAZING SENSE OF MUSIC! EXCELLENT VIDEO AMOEBA!! FOR ME THIS WOULD BE PRICELESS!!
Wow, I am an old rocker but I have always been aware of Paul Oakenfold when he first started doing remixes in the late 80's early 90's but I'd never heard him speak or seen any interviews with him. What a fucking great guy, this episode was a massive curveball for me.
Oakenfold is a legend in the electronic music world. The number of musicians and bands he has produced and remix is astonishing, he has remixed and produced tracks for U2, Moby, Rolling Stones, New Order, The Cure, Duran Duran etc.
DJs make the best for these because they know how to crate dig and they always pick a very wide selection of music. No matter how "pop" or mainstream their own music may be in your opinion, their inlfuences are always interesting.
Could have been a much longer segment. Had him go different departments. I saw him spin in Dallas before Trancepirt was released. First heard his remix productions with Gary Clail/OnU Sound System. The list of people he’s worked with is astonishing.
DJs and dance music producers have a very specific taste. Check out sugar Otis he's awesome. He's Blues but he's more Cosmic like Sun R a nothing and everything. Pure soul. His dad was Johnny Otis which is a pretty good lineage Shuggie Otis rules man
I love Oakenfold so don't get me wrong, but the Shuggie Otis bit triggered me so much. Hendrix did not "rip off" Otis. Freedom Flight came out **the year after Hendrix died** and blues guitarists have been playing electric blues styles since the 1930s, before either of them were even born. It's a shared well that both drew from and, in turn, contributed to.
Yeah he massively assumed that one or has been wrongly told by someone else attempting to impress him. He should definitely hear Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters and T-Bone Walker..so many...
Bryan Ferry's Boys And Girls is a sonic marvel. Like most 80s albums..lots of midrange, but also has some decent bass and the mixing is about perfect. Great songs. I would argue the single and song for the film Legion "Is Your Love Strong Enough" that came out of the same sessions is one of the best singles of the 80s..
Maybe so, but Shuggie started playing professionally in 1965, and his first recorded solo was in 1969, when he was fifteen. His first album, with Al Kooper, was also recorded in 1969.
Having had a bit of Global Underground month where i listen to the mixes from it's early hard house days to it's more bangin' progressive stuff. Oakie's mixes really are top notch. Always having a bit of that Perfecto signature to it. This video brings so much joy too, you can see he still loves music even if he is past his prime. Oakie still an absolute legend. :)
Hilarious, the moment he mentions "Are You Going with Me", they show exactly the only part that Paul IS NOT talking about. Listen to that track, but from the beginning, it's brilliant.
I wish I could've been older when he was hot. These EDM festivals are nothing compared to his perfecto mixes I grew up on
He released his biography a few months ago if you want to know more about his journey. Its “Ready,Steady,Go”. Its a great read, i highly recommend it
Paul Oakenfold is one of the true pioneers of UK house music and his music, especially remixes, speak for themselves. Legend
House and Trance?
Elton seems like a cool dude
Ha! I'm not the only one who thinks that. 🤣
I thought it was Matt Damon playing Elton at first.
Paul Damon John
Same thought
Wow, they beat me one year ago...
Oakenfold is a legend in dance music. awesome to see him on here
Oakenfold is an all time great. Man, I still listen to Starry Eyed Surprise on a weekly basis since it came up 21 years ago.
Oakey, Sasha, and Digweed were instrumental in shaping progressive house in the 90's, and early 2000's. Their Global Underground releases are some of the greatest mixes ever released, and I still play them regularly! This is a great upload! Nice work!
Sasha and Digweed. Block. Yes. Oakey Noakey Dokey.
Do you realize the music or club music or the records he plays with Madonna is going to be forgettable very very soon he’s talking about Jimi Hendrix like a complete moron there’s no way Jimmy rips off Shuggie
...and possibly helpimg create the superstar dj status that ruined house music and overblown the dj as some kind of godlike status.
A true music legend and a great DJ. Love his music and label "Perfecto" awesome interview
Best upload on this channel in a long time for me. Oakenfold is, without a doubt, a legend. Part of the Mt. Rushmore of house music for me. Wonderful video. Thank you! 🙏
The “Mt. Rushmore of house.” Beautifully put, so true, and really made me chuckle.
I've been listening to Oakenfold since the 90's, and don't think I've ever heard his voice before. He honestly sounds wasted here. That, or a lifetime of substances has caught up with him. Still love his music though, and seems to be a great guy other than that
I don't think he took drugs very much he's a bit of a square to be honest. I remember he always used to frown on things in mixmag interviews etc
I love Paul's positivity
I think he got his Hendrix story mixed up. That's Buddy Guy, Shuggie was extremely young during Hendrix.
Lovely person, we grew up watching and listening to this dj.
Just a side, he looks like a Matt Damon and sounds a bit like Ozzy yeah?
Love this man, what energy!
ctrl-f'd "ozzy" to be sure it wasn't in my head
He's so right about buying records based on their sleeve/artwork
My surprise record was Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Record art was amazing, I had to buy after I found out the Dap-Kings were Any Winehouse backing band too.

@@deltahomicide9300 So what's some of your favorites? Tresor 2 was one of my all time classics, purchased for the sleeve.
@@jeremiahjohnson3337 Amon Tobin's 'Bricolage'. It was a total cut + paste job but the layout and font looked so minimal, Japanese

Used to listen to this dude a lot as a kid. It's so weird to finally hear his voice lol. He's so British lol
He’s very proud of his British roots. Never wants to lose his accent despite living in LA for the last 20 years. ✌️🙏🏽👊🏼
The Leo Sunshipp had a remaster and repress on 45, its a wicked pick and deserves so much more attention!
Just downloaded this , never heard of them before : amazing
OMFG I GOT GOOSEBUMPS!!!
I HAVE LISTENED TO HIM, LOVED HIS WORK ALL MY LIFE BUT NEVER SAW HIM ON SCREEN PHYSICALLY OR HEARD HIM EVER!
WOOOOWWW!!!! THE MAN WHO REALLY HAS AN AMMMAAZING SENSE OF MUSIC!
EXCELLENT VIDEO AMOEBA!! FOR ME THIS WOULD BE PRICELESS!!
I bumped into Paul once in downtown l.a dude is down to earth!
I love this….his passion for music and records is so evident in this video. Great!
Love The Bryan Ferry pick - The Chosen One is my favorite track on that album 👌
Windswept was on a Miami Vice episode.
Paul Oakenfold produced the Happy Mondays best album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches.
R.I.P. Paul Ryder
love the vibe that paul has.
Fills me with joy to see my favorite Pat Metheny album get a mention!
Great Guy and great selections

Wow this is one of my favorite segments! He seems a very nice person. Thank you Mr Oakenfold.
Watching this makes me want to go there right now
Paul Oakenfold should do a blues album with Bryan Ferry and Pat Metheny.
A DJ legend 👏
Imagine having a beer with him, incredible human being.
Sounds like he might had a few before picking his vinyl. What a legend.
DJs make the best for these because they know how to crate dig and they always pick a very wide selection of music. No matter how "pop" or mainstream their own music may be in your opinion, their inlfuences are always interesting.
Oakenfold's remix of U2's "even better than the real thing" is even better than the real thing......so good!!!
And his remix of Lemon.👏
Can't stand U2 or Oakey but you are 100% correct no contest.
Journeys by Stadium DJ was my first album by Paul Oakenfold, and still one of the best mixes for that time.
What a GREAT interview!!! Thanks!
Could have been a much longer segment. Had him go different departments. I saw him spin in Dallas before Trancepirt was released. First heard his remix productions with Gary Clail/OnU Sound System. The list of people he’s worked with is astonishing.
Seems people forget but he also produced the classic Happy Mondays album 'Pills N Thrills and Bellyaches'
He has remixed U2, Moby, Rolling Stones, New Order, Massive Attack, Duran Duran and many more!
The dude reminds me of when you sit down at a bar next to the person that is both the smartest and most wasted in the place.
Oakey, last of the prince charming super star DJs. Bless his cotton socks !
Love the Perfecto Records hat Paul! Trance Forever 🙌🏻
Great artist has good taste in music. Marvin Gaye is just feel good music 247/365!
Oi! How come Reg weren't picking his own, Rocket Man, Brown Dirt Cowboy, and suchlike?
One of the best Trance, House, Prog DJs of the 90s and early 2000s
I cried when he pulled out 'Off Ramp'. My parents played that record every Sunday. Just pure imaginative musicscape.
Boys and Girls still sounds amazing.
I have that Marvin Gaye LP. Bought when it came out! RIP Marv!
I love Paul’s remixes of U2, Moby, New Order, Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, Happy Mondays they are all phenomenal!
This guy rocks. 10 more episodes with him please.
Trance legend
Very cute, sweet and endearing music nerd gush...Very nice to see Pat Metheny get a mention. The musicians musician.

Oakie! Dope episode.
He is a Legend!!! I love him!!!
After seeing his record picks, I respect Paul even more...nice choices.
Very engaging and insightful. No ego, just passion
Going to see Paul for the first time next Saturday night in San Francisco.
It's always 5 o'clock somewhere, eh?
Paul Oakenfold in a record shop?! Totally want to watch this!
The bump wore off after the first record ⛄️
He gets it, loved this.
I'm not familiar with Paul, but he seems like a delightful human.
the trance legend . Global Underground 007 New York , my favorite mix cd from him
Thanks amoeba, that man is a legend...

The film is called Legend.
Damn that first pick was on point.
What’s Goin’ On is a hearth where everyone should gather.
I don’t think there’s any truth to that Hendrix anecdote, Shuggie Otis was 15 in ‘69 lol.
Haha you’re right. Other way round - Shuggie was influenced by Hendrix. Hendrix died only a couple of weeks after Shuggie’s debut album came out.
Yep, that was a WTF moment from someone you'd expect to know better...by a long stretch!
Maybe so, but Shuggie started playing professionally in 1965, and his first recorded solo was in 1969, when he was fifteen. His first album, with Al Kooper, was also recorded in 1969.
9:52 I cherish Paul, now due to this UA-cam video I do so even MORE.
Thank you.
Paul’s record with Brittany Murphy hasn’t aged and will forever be a banger. So much talent.
