      @@richlisola1 there was a scene where Cain points out to Adama that Pegasus has less crew than Galactica - even though Pegasus is ~50% larger - because the Pegasus has automation. That seemed to imply that the guns required crews on Galactica. That's the one place I figure where automation would cut down crew size. Even with some aspects automated, they'd still need a sizable hangar crew to fix up and re-stage retrieved Vipers.
      I kind of imagine it as like the Iowa-class battleships - there were aspects of automation to get the powder and shells to the guns, but there was still a need for crews at the guns themselves. Galactica was an old girl - built in a time when there was a fear of what Cylons could do to automated systems.

    It was not until about a month ago that I realized that all of those weapons emplacements have a bubble cockpit where the gunner sits, with only a (possibly armored?) window between them and hard vacuum, or the deadly round whizzing through that vacuum. It makes sense with Galactica not being networked as a defense against Cylon hacking, but that is a lot of crew dangling out in danger!

      Even without "Network" everything in sspaceship is computer control. The concept "Manual" unless you guys are turning cranks, wires and gears.
      I remember a scifi story where by the computer's are basically no more sophisticated than whats in a car. Keeping a computer safe from hacking is easy, you place it in a faraday cage from Electromagnetic signals and run it as fiber optic and the software is physical wire assembly (think Apollo Guidance computer)

    • @sparrowlt

      Yes because when evacuating Lee says "set batteries into auto cycle B" .. but we dont know if Galactica batteries can be fired from the bridge.. they certainly are manned as we see 2 crew in each with a big viewport.. maybe they can be remotelly operated but at a much less accuracy rate.
      Galactica was "low tech" but not that low tech.. they still had remote control systems and remote monitoring (as was stated by Tigh Cylon boarders could vent the whole ship from auxiliary damage control) With Galactica it was a more hardwired and basic bulkier isolated systems thing

      I would have actually liked to see maybe one or two episodes that were some what dedicated interaction with these crews too. We got to see pilots, control personnel, DC teams, flight crew, hangar deck, engineering, and some of the marines. But we didn't get much interaction with the people behind the guns and it feels like we were cheated out of that. Though on a side note, really impressed that the show did show aging and extensive battle damage with each episode involving the guns. Really emphasizes just how bad ass these people had to be to sit there and take beating after beating from Cylon munitions.

    Considering the number of times we see Galactica hit by a massive warhead, even a nuke or two, I bet the gun crews were the most hardcore on the ship. It's one thing to be on board this thing in combat, quite another to be strapped on the outside of the armor literally designed to take a beating.

In vaccum space, they could potentially reach Mach 20 or something, meaning that even at an range of 20km, it would only take a few seconds for the missile to hit the target.

      The thing is the battlestars can not allow themselves to go in effective firing range to base star as they would do go so close that there flag shield would fail you stop the basestars missles in time. So they prefer a defensive approach to get rid of raiders and counter attack with vipers

    • @Debbiebabe69
      @Debbiebabe69 5 років тому +12

      It wasnt just the 'main forward guns'.
      Pegasus's main armament consists of her 'bow battery', 8 forward facing 2200mm (86+ inches!) anti ship guns, and her 'main battery', 60 heavy (but not as heavy as the BB) guns capable of anti-ship or flak roles. She jumped in with surprise, meaning she could bring to bear all 68 of her guns on the first base ship - which although crippled and wrecked did not actually blow up.
      After surprise was lost, facing 3 fully functional base ships launching volley after volley of nukes, as well as 3000+ raiders, she had to use her main battery entirely for flak to defend herself and only had the 8 guns in the bow battery for offence. However her main role there was to eat the nukes aimed at the crippled Galactica (which at that point was one or two nukes away from going bang along with all humanity's hopes), so she could not bring her bow battery to bear after that first volley.

      You are right short of few plot tropes but one thing still bothers me to this days, why they dont use main guns often clearly they are long range and strong enough to destroy cylon ship in one salvo yet they use them once this also point into unlogical Pegasus suicide and why Lee parked ship between base ships when he can quickly snipe them from afar like it dit with first base ship.

    • @ydoumus
      @ydoumus 4 роки тому

      @@Pedgo1986 I believe the reason for that is that the flak point-defence turrets are static. Only the rail guns can actually rotate 360 degrees. Note how Galactica is essentially almost always broadside to enemies - there's a reason for that. If they were ambushed by cylons, who primarily use raiders and missile systems, turning bow-in to fire the main battery would cause a major risk to the ship (lack of flak screen).
      That's why you see Pegasus use its main battery, because it was the one to make an ambush.

    • @Pedgo1986
      @Pedgo1986 4 роки тому +1

      @@ydoumus Ok i understand galactica defense posture thats fine but there were scenes when cylons jumped right before galactica they have time and angle to shoot salvo or two while turning to broadside nevertheless my main problem is still pegasus flimsy suicide. I understand it was for plot but some critical malfunction or sabotage will look better. Pegasus jumped in and instantly shot down base star btw in scene it look like this main battery on pegasus is not only forward pointing nevertheless Lee opt to fly side by side with base star not shooting just flying and beign hit by everything to ram another base star ahead it just make no sense, firstly he is already pointing this crazy guns on enemy just not shooting, he is flying next to basestar and not firing flaks that can shred anything in seconds and again without any fire he just slam into enemy ship.

      Pegasus was a different Battlestar class; Galactica was an oudated Jupiter class, while Pegasus was a modern Mercury class. And sadly, no. Measured doses of something grand makes you appreciate it all the more, like singers who hold back their full vocal power and talent until the climax of a song. the space combat is one of the few things that made the show worthwhile to me as it got into the latter seasons. For me it became too much of a soap opera, a convoluted mess of a plot, at times totally incoherent, characters breaking character for the sake of making some new drama, et cetera. I wanted to love the show all the way through, watched it all the way through only for wanting to see how things ended, but the last few seasons were a drag to me.
      Now a real dream come true for me would be to see massive space battles like this in a Robotech movie series, based on the U.S. animated adaptation in the 80's. That story I'm deeply fond of. Despite some childish elements, there's something sobering about seeing 4.8 million alien warships in a green cloud around the Earth bombarding its entire surface into oblivion that says, "This isn't just for kids." :-)

    Frakkin' amazing.
    When watching this one does realize, they didn't fire all that often. It seems like they're burning ammo all the time when one is watching the show, but not when it is condensed like this. I guess it could be considered realistic that all the ammo they have is what they grabbed at Ragnar Anchorage considering the size of the ship.

He ends up flipping the ship after topside gets trashed, and nails one of the base stars before jumping away using the forward main battery.

    After so many raider attacks, missiles and nukes, the main battery somehow was almost intact for four years until the ship rotted away. And they never got out of ammo dispite that there is no human civilization to produce munitions... and the ship itself could damage a basestar with its small bullet-like munition firing guns but took imensive pounding at the cylons baseworld but yet survived ... I always wondered ehat did those people ate for 4 years and how did not die of vitamin and mineral deficiencies...

    i remember the meeting where they discussed how Pegasus would ultimately win if it attacked Galactica. but not before taking probably fatal damage itself. if we watch the show again we will always see Galactica behind Pegasus. Galactica being a broadside vessel when attacking from behind would do some serious damage before Pegasus could even start turning. that said Pegasus was more maneuverable. we also see in one episode both ships broadsiding a base star. ultimately there are enough inconsistencies in the show that we will never truly know which ship would have beat the other, plot armor or not.

    My mum and dad hates most Sci Fi cuz they cant relate to futuristic space battles with lasers. But they loved the drama and realistic tone of BSG. Using hard shells and cannons and bullets, they give the sense of realistic space naval battle instead of bubbly shields and cute lasers, with actual human pilots fighting and risking their lives in a fighter. I guess in a very very far future we will see more star trek style ships in real life but Battlestars look more relatable to me

    This is what BSG got right and the Jar Jar Abrams Star Trek screwed up. Forget the energy vs projectile issue for a moment. On Trek you see thousands of little phaser bolts flying out with super high firing rate. Flashy but is it a machine gun or a ship's battery? BSG was able to really give you a sense that these were hugely powerful weapons they were firing. Even ST:TNG did a better job at making the ship's weapons seem more substantial than the Jar Jar.
