50 mph on stock 14 gauge 28 spoke aluminum wheels & 6061 aluminum hard tail frame with a bunch of extra weight added to the bike. What could possibly go wrong? I like e-bikes & this build for the most part but they're much too expensive for what you actually get. I'm gonna have to wait for solid state batteries. How long are those wheels & frame gonna last with extra e-bike weight & a 200 lb rider?
My $350 2 stroke bike build hits 45 mph now gets 90 mpg's & could hit 50 with another $50 more in engine upgrade parts. The frame is a cheap 6061 aluminum 29in mongoose but is actually very similar in quality to the more expensive 6061 hard tail frames. The forks are sadly generic, I added $12 worth of oval spoke nipple washers to the 48 spoke double wall rear wheel for some more strength. The bike has a common generic 3 gear crank, derailleur, twist shifters,etc.. but they work fine & I rarely need to use them since it's motorized. I have some 203m floating brake discs on the way pushing the build to around $380. For a fraction of the cost, I have a fast 45 mph 2 stroke motorized bike, stronger 48 spoke 14G double wall wheels, steel hubs with thicker bolt on axles, not the skinny quick release skewers never meant for 50 mph speeds & heavier weight capacity. My hub are steel & add a tiny bit more weight but are stronger than aluminum hubs. Once you add the weight of engine or e-bike parts, you're better off with stronger steel- slightly heavier hubs than weaker, lighter aluminum ones.
The downside to my build is, I don't have all the gears & high torque for steep hill climbing (but won't have constant chain breaking issues either) for less than 1/4 the cost of this e-bike build, I'm happy with what I have & will get the same if not more miles before new engine parts are needed.

A 52v bat with 35e cells wouldn't work with the bac 2000. At 23.8ah that's a 14s7p battery and is capable of an amp draw of no more than 56amps maximum. The bac 2000 would ask for 70-80 battery amps continuous and it'll peak even higher. It'll only work safely if the amps in controller were lowered thus making it pointless to use that controller the above battery is more suited to the bac 855 which will draw 50 battery amps continuous so it's just about in the maximum limits of the battery. That'll make the bike 2600watts continuous.

Maybe even run a 7sp or something like that if you did still want gears, but wanted to stick with beefier cogs and chain? @ronsexton6829 Рік тому

It looks like yours came with a 30 tooth chainring. Another issue is that the chain you have is probably too short / tight to use with a 38 tooth when trying to use the biggest (lowest) gears in the back. Much easier to swap a chainring than to make a chain longer. ...Every time you need a new chain. Also might need a longer derailleur hanger (I think that's what it's called) with a big chainring. Or go with a smaller cassette (rear gears) and keep the chain length and derailleur hanger. Bottom line, just getting a new 30 tooth chainring is probably the path to the least headaches.
I went through this with a Bafang BBSHD and a 40t chainring with an original 32t on a 2022 Giant Talon 2 (very similar bike) and figured this out after a lot of time and even more profanity. Issues remain the same on the CYC. Hopefully my CYC will come before 2030.

@@bob-ny6kn well that really depends on the kind of bike you buy. I wouldn't fit it to a shitty entry level bike or non branded thing with basic components, so in that sense absolutely. On the other hand mid to high end road and mountain bikes are designed to go at speeds in the 50kmh range (and frequently do). I guess your main point here is that you need good brakes and tires and I agree. Stick a decent set of 180mm hydraulic disc brakes and a good set of tires and you should be good to go. At least on my bike thats enough to stop from 50kmh in about 2 - 3 seconds since I know how to control my brakes properly. Also these bikes are in the 10 - 15kg range and made to hold people weighing up to 100kg. the 10kg increase in weight from the ebike system is negligble.

Anyone can be an expert when you have all these companies to help you and custom make components for you. YOU ARE NOT EXPERTS. And for Surron you will need a driving licence, if not yet , soon (maybe not in America). And your chain will skip a lot and also means that your components will brake down at high speeds or at least you will have to do a lot of maintenance so is not for beginners or medium raiders.

Cyc won't do a unexpected wheelie or one from a stand still. As far as the rear end kicking out. Not really unless you're really trying. Lacks alot of bottom end torque. I have done both gen1 and gen2 with syock controllers and both 855 and bac2000 controllers. My 72v bbshd with bac855 leaves the cyc in the dust even from a stand still. And my bbshd will do 50mph easy.
As in the video you can see the rider putting in a lot of effort off the line where as the surron rider doesnt have to. Just shows you that it does lack the bottom end torque.
Now maby next time compare apples to apples. Get a surron that has a bac2000 and 72v then put it back on the line and see who really wins.

Hi Nick, Arne - you both make some interesting points. Yes of course a Sur Ron with a bac2000 and 72v has amazing power. But at how much of a cost when you add up the bike + extra components and battery? We know people who have Sur Rons and quickly get to $10k+ in cost if you go down the rabbit hole. Whereas these CYC motors seem to be pretty powerful for the price. We could have our friend do wheelies on the eBike if you want to see it. In the future we will do a single speed mid drive eBike Build. Also there are more competitors similar to Sur Ron being developed that we know of and we will review many of them

I think it's dumb, but smart from a marketing stand point.. parts will just keep wearing out, failing and having to be replaced.. I'd rather run a separate chain from the motor to a large sprocket attached to the 6 bolt disc mounts of a disc wheel.. I have one on my Kona Ute.. it's 53 tooth and shoold keep the motor nice and happy at higher rpms, adding my leg power separately through the regular chain and saving it a lot of wear by reducing the strain on it.

Full suspension (front and back) is better for keeping both tires stuck to the road. Fitting a battery big enough to give any sort of range using this much power into the frame triangle is the big issue. The hardtail (front suspension only) has all the space in the triangle available. Even small frame hardtails generally do not have enough space available for a battery big enough to be useful. If you can fit on a size medium bike or bigger, do that. I have a medium and a small and cut the seatpost down with a pipecutter on the medium so that I can sit in the seat and still have both feet planted on the ground when stopped. The small is more comfortable as is, but only fits little shark batteries that this motor would suck dry in minutes.

mid-drive and direct drive are quite different. From what I can gather, mid-drive has the benefit of providing more torque, and generally being more efficient, so more suited for bumpy roads / offroading and might get more miles out of your battery. I use my e-bike to commute to work and I've been finding that I dislike the maintenance required to keep a hub motor going long term, not a fan of transferring the motor to a new rim, replacing snapped spokes, and trueing the wheel every time I hit a rock. I'm switching to mid-drive for my next commuter as it looks like there won't be as much monthly maintenance to content with, plus I can switch over to mag wheels.
