- Do you really need a $200 serum? Or a $150 moisturizer? As a dermatologist, I get this question about whether expensive skincare is worth it or not. So today, I'm going to share some serums, moisturizers, and even an eye cream that I think are worth the splurge.

It’s all about what’s worth it to you and your budget. No cream is worth getting into debt.
Absolutely agree!
I’d love to see a dedicated video to led light therapy pls!!
Could you please do a video on JOWLS?! What causes them, how to prevent them, what works best if developing and what to do if you have them. Thanks!
Yes!!! Thank you :) Seems like even if we do all the right skincare things, gravity will still do this to our face.
My understanding is it’s due in part to bone loss, loss of the structure the skin hangs on, along with loss of collagen and elasticity. If that’s the case I hope she focuses on bone health and not just topical or surgical options.
Get a facelift
@@RaDiUx44 unfortunately your right! From what I've learned and know, face-lift IS the only option once really developed. Looking for new insights. Thanks!
Hi Lauren! You should look into Forma! I had the best results with it and I used to consider buccal fat removal since I was 20 and was stressed about my jowls. Now at 31 I’m happy to have found a treatment that gave me a clear V line
I'd love to see a video comparing similar products from medical grade skincare brands (Obagi, Alastin, EltaMD, Skinbetter, Skinmedica, Skinceuticals, etc)! I think this would be great for those who buy medical grade skincare to know which products you think are more effective/better from which brands! love your content! i learn sooo much
And mdaire
And ph formula
Yes yes!!!
I agree!
And Paula's Choice... a very good brand ❤
Love my Omnilux face and neck mask makes skin texture and complexion more radiant! Would love to see a video on this!😊
Great video thank you. So many people only talk about drugstore products so I appreciate your video mentioning the higher end products
Thank you for these recommendations. Yes please a video about red led! There are so many companies making these devices now so I’d love to learn how to shop for one.
Omgosh I love TNS! I have to save to purchase it but it’s so worth it!!! I love it!!! First time I used it was following a micro-needling treatment… obsessed! It’ll always be a must have in my list! ❤
Ah!! I wish we could learn the basic skincare (skin protection) at school or at least in high school following with the importance of exercise, hygiene and a clean diet. I just feel that we have to learn everything by ourselves the most important thing in the world which is HEALTH. When I talk about all of these to some people around me they are sadly ignorant. Thanks to get into details about expensive products. Very appreciated 🥰🥰
I agree, people get a certain mindset and are often unwilling to consider that the medical field is continually evolving and improving! I used Noxema (dating myself) as my cleanser in high school! Not my cleanser now!! 😇
All you gotta do is watch some UA-cam video 🤣, if anything schools should teach about taxes, buying a house, taking out loans, managing and saving money, who to plan for retirement. All you have to do is go to dermatologist and boom you got perfect skin. It's really not that complex or important. And of course people could learn about on their own but not everyone will at a young age until it's too late and they can't retire but if it's taught at schools there is now a higher chance that people will understand money and be wiser with it.
You didn't learn the importance of hygiene in elementary school?!
@@9melissal I don't remember one teacher telling us anything related to hygiene. I remember this one science teacher showing us how to put a goddamn condom in high school but besides that, NOTHING. I went to high school from 2004 to 2009 so maybe that changed since then, I don't know.
@@kimgroslouis5587 Each generation seems to have a difference experience. When I went to HS, they used to have a course on Home Economics, where one would learn how to cook, nutrition, meal planning etc. When my mom went to school they taught bookkeeping, typing and some other vocational skills.
Thank you, Dr Sam! I so appreciate that you emphasize “research-based” products! It might’ve helped me more before reaching the status of Senior Citizen! I was fortunate to be employed by a NYC plastic surgeon and the program he advised may be outdated by now! Since I am fearful of invasive procedures, trying one expensive item at a time (and allow it time to work) is my present mindset! Aging is a theoretical gift as we all want to look our best! Again thank you 🙏🏻 for offering your advice and experience! PS: Theo’s first Christmas 🎄 How fun!
yes please . I'd love an entire video on LED light. I love all of your videos . I've learned so much . I could listen to you all day
Loved this. Thank you, Dr. Sam🤍
Absolutely great informative video. I appreciate it. Thank you 😊
Thank you for this video. Knowing how the cost breaks down helps us make a good decision on where to spend the money.
Thank you so much for this information! I truly appreciate your honesty and personal testimony about these products!!! ❤️
2 questions: if you tolerate CE Ferulic well is there a reason to try the ski better product instead given they’re both a splurge? Also, if you tolerate a 0.025% tretinoin well, is there reason to invest in Skinbetter AlphaRet overnight? Thank you for all you do!
Another great video Dr. Sam! I use the following & feel validated. 😂
• Omnilux Contour Face
• Omnilux Contour Neck & Décolleté
• Skinceuticals C E Ferulic
• Skin Medica TNS Advanced+ Serum
• Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength peel pads
I think I’m going to add the Neocutis Lumière eye cream. 🥰
Great video! Would love to see a review on the various LED masks.
Yes! I would love to see a video on red light therapy, thanks!
Would love a red light therapy vid!! Also with comparisons of at home devices
Yes, do a video on infrared therapy.
I'm curious about the red light panels, as it's supposed to be good for a lot of things, health wise
Thank you for such an informative video, as always. Would you make a video about led treatment at home and if you recommend it for people with melasma and rosacea.
Yes - I’d love to see a dedicated video on Red Light Therapy! 😊
Great video! I’d love a red light video. Also curious about the nira for eye area.
Excellent video! Thank you ❤️
Love this one! I also really like the omnilux mask & ddg peel pads mentioned. Curious on your thoughts on ReViv as the TSN alternative & Oneskin. Thank you!
Wow great information, thank you Doc I really do appreciate you. You are so beautiful 🕊️🙏🏼
Thank you so much for recommending products. What do you think of The Inkey products? Do you recommend them? Love your videos
So helpful thanks for these and good to have an option to invest esp liked the for those who may have sensitive skin options:)
Great video! I would love a full SkinBetter Science review video!! ❤❤
Same!
excellent video!! thank you for sharing
Awesome video. Thank you!
Thank you for the great video! I would like to know more about LED therapy.
Hello!
First off, thank you for this content. Very informative and helpful.
I’d love to hear your input on skincare products from Chanel/Dior/Clarins. Which of these brands would you say is worth the splurge?
Thank you!
Yes. Please do a video on red light therapy!
Thank you for the video! Curious which ones did u receive from PR? And how’s Ordinary copper peptide compare to the more expensive ones? Thx
Very informative thank you
Love this video! I always wondered about the rich cream from Augustinus Bader and the growth factor serum frim bio effect
Alastin's ultra nourishing moisturizer is so great! I love the ingredients. It goes on kinda "greasy" but in a good way for dry skin, then it absorbs well. My skin is so dry that ive always layered cheap moisturizers and i think that leads to clogged pores. So expensive moisturizer is worth it to me.
Hi Sam, thanks for this video!
Can you explain about the LED masks, are they ok to use if you have melasma?
Thank you for sharing ! 💕💕💕
It’s so confusing to see multiple dermatologists say even the “researched” products from big pharma companies aren’t worth it due to issues with said research, but then have others say oh yes it’s researched so it’s good. 😅 just goes to show there is no truly “worth it” product amongst professionals, only personal preference. So I do appreciate you saying “it’s worth it to me”.
all of these “might be worth it” videos just list expensive topicals that at least have published research behind them … so worth it only when compared to luxury creams with nothing but celebrity backing and quality marketing
adapalene, colloidal oatmeal, beeswax, glycerine … these are all FDA approved over the counter actives that can be found on the cheap but have much more research behind them
Most good skincare is sub $20/month.
Prescription options like 15% azelaic acid or 4% hydroquinone are ~ $30/month with a coupon.
Beyond that … just ask your doctor for a dermatologist referral and look into procedures. It’s hard for me to justify a $180 lotion or serum, even if it lasts 3 months.
So true. Came here from another video saying expensive skincare doesn’t work and now she is saying this. So confusing
Please do video for red light therapy for home and also what are for office too, thank you!!!
Yes I would love to see a video on Red light, I have a few dark spots from pass sun exposure and I’m curious if the red light would make the spots darker.
I absolutely love Verso Super Facial Serum. It’s the only skincare product I splurge on. I have rosacea and dry skin, and I was able to easily work my way up to daily use, and my skin has never felt better. Retinyl-retinoate is also more stable in daylight, so I’m able to use it in my AM routine and leave my PM routine open to other actives ❤
Yes! I use and love so many of these. One question- Where is the best place to add the Alastin peptides into your routine? Thank you!
Great recommendations, thank you! It feels like most of the influencers with a mature audience are touting the NIRA.
I would love to have your opinion. I have the OmniLux, but need some more help with my eye area. I have Systemic Mastocytosis, which rules out any Botox or fillers.
Love this video, and almost every video you have posted so far. Can you please recommend other options for good growth factors and peptides as I can’t find both Alastin and Skinmedica here (in Dubai)?
Very helpful video. What do think about products containg fragrance, alcohol and essential oils? Do darker skins require specific care? Any ingredients in particular which should be incorporated or excluded. Thanks
what I use: Omnilux LED mask at night after cleansing. AM: Timeless Vitamin C serum (has E and ferulic acid and comes in a pump to reduce oxidation, and is cheap), then Asterwood Triple Repair, then tinted moisturizing sunscreen. Evening after cleansing: L’oréal Revitalift 10% Glycolic Acid OR The Ordinary Buffet Plus Copper Peptide (alternate days) then 2-3 hours later Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol. Moisturizers I keep on hand and use as needed: La Roche Posay Toleriane Double Repair, CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion
Hi ❤️ Can you do a video on anti ageing in office treatments? Like lasers, moroheus, micro needling or hydrafacial etc
Thank you for the valuable information. I enjoy Skinceuticals. Can you let us know about Chantecaille specifically the Bio lifting serum?
True botanicals. I would love to hear your opinion. For me. It's the only thing I've found so far that doesn't increase redness. I find most of the products very calming that even have a category on their website that lists all of the products that they recommend for sensitive skin
Hi -I would love to know if you prefer SkinCeuticals or Skinbetter vitamin C? I appreciate all your content as it has helped me so much. I am using SkinCeuticals right now (C E) but my dermatologist was recommending the Skinbetter vitamin C (Alto). I love the C E so not sure if I want to try the other . She also said I could use the Alto at night with my Skinbetter AlphaRet overnight cream, which I found interesting given it has retinol in it. Interested in your thoughts.
Thank you for the video. And yes I would love you to do a video on the infrared face mask. I would love to know how it performs on darker skin tones. Can it cause pigmentation on darker skin? Thank you.
Very interested in a deep dive on red light therapy!
Thank you!! ❤️❤️
Yes, please, to Red Light Therapy! Including body would be a plus.
Thank you Ms. Ellis!! Generally speaking, can one use an LED red light mask if using hydroquinone?
What do you think of Beauty Pie products? Specifically their skincare formulas. Thanks, I'm new to your videos and I'm greatly enjoying them!
I have tried the Calecim multi-action cream growth factors and it is really good you can really see the difference in skin density and texture and skin laxity.
If I splurge, it's on serums, but never over $100, even if I had it to spend. If it's a one time thing ok, but since one has to keep buying it gets crazy expensive. In terms of Sunday Riley Good Genes, I used it and it was good, then someone gave me a bottle of Pond's Rejuveness....I liked it better!. The first thing on the ingredients is Lactic Acid. it's a wonderful product, very like Sunday Riley. Gotta say, the video kind of depressed me, but I'll cheer up when I get my black Friday haul!
Thanks for the review on these products. I find that whatever the price point, our skin will still age. For me, what works best in keeping my skin youthful is a healthy lifestyle, cleansing my skin well daily, and hydration - both drinking water and applying hydrating gels.
sunscreen...
I would love to know your thoughts on osmosis, specifically stemfactor, catalyst AC11 and renew xx
Yes to red light therapy video please!
We have a lot of the same favorites! I also have rosacea and melasma and am not able to tolerate a lot of products. I love the Skinbetter Alto Advanced Defense (and the OG version), Skinbetter Trio Moisturizer, and the Neocutis eye cream. I also splurge on the Skinbetter Even Tone serum. Altreno is the only tretinoin formula I am able to tolerate. I’m interested in the Alastin Complex but their eye cream burned the skin under my eyes.
I love Altreno!
Yes do a video on red light therapy!
Great video. I use Skinmedica TNS Advanced+ Serum and Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair Serum in Cream Treatment. These two are fantastic but the best for my eyes so far has been Osmosis MD Catalyst AC-11 DNA Repair. I've only used it for my eye lids and its great.
Great video! Your shirt is so cute! Where can I find it?
Thank you for covering TNS serum…I’ve been on the fence! What about Lyma Laser? 😅 it’s $2,000 so I’d love your take!
Thank you for this video. Can you pls review Sisley eye mask in ( green tube). Thanks again.
I watch yr videos just to FEEL GOOD… u give me a pure happy clean positive vibes… i feel good and happy at heart♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Altho i watch it for the content as well😂
Thank you for sharing this information. Have you looked at the Droplette and/or OneSkin? Both are getting a lot of attention on Facebook and You Tube.
Hi Dr. Sam, I would love to see your video on Red Light Therapy particularly regarding hair growth. I just received my Omnilux Contour & planning to also use it on my head for hair growth. They did recently released the Omnilux Men mask which penetrate deeper. I want to know your thoughts if it would be best to use the Men version instead for better hair growth. Thank you.
Hi Dr. Ellis. What do you think about other expensive skincare like Augustinus Bader and Estée Lauder Advanced Repair line?
What about Allies of skin? I use them in my Morning and Evening routine really like them. Will be interesting to hear your point of view. Many Thanks
I think I've used every product you mentioned other than the TNS Advanced. I just can't justify that expense. I love my Alto, Trio and Alpharet from Skinbetter. As for eye cream, I really like Alastin's eye cream. I have the Alastin Restorative Skin Complex and I'm never sure where to use it. Is it a moisturizer or serum? I tend to just use it after I get a microneedling treatment. Great video!
Alastin does have a great eye cream too! I tend to use the restorative skin complex under spf in the morning. Sort of a hybrid serum/moisturizer. Also great for post-procedure like you mentioned!
I would LOVE your revoew of Augustinus Bader. I LOVE every product of his that I've tried, but the price is... whew!!!!
Have you used Tatcha’s dewy cream? I am obsessed with it but wonder how it compares to the Indigo cream. Is it thicker? It is the only cream that helps my skin while using tretinoin.
Please make a video on LED masks and microcurrent. Thanks!
A great, less expensive dupe for Sunday Riley’s Good Genes is the new L.A. Refining Serum. I just started using it and it really does seem like a dupe. Also, I’ve been using the ReViv Serums Ultimate Serum for my replacement of TNS. It’s much less expensive and packed with growth factors, phyto stem cells and peptides. Something to think about :)
Awesome thank you for sharing that! Great to have more affordable options 🙌🏼
What are the changes you noticed while using Reviv?
i love sunday riley their one of fave splurge brands
Can you please tell me what you think of the organic skin care line Eminence. Thank you, I really enjoy your video’s.
Will the ZO Skin Health brand be in the same category as Skinbetter science? And another question, will an powered facial cleaning brush/device be better ?
Thank you for great lessons😘
I absolutely love the Skinmedica TNS serum, the skinceuticals CE Ferulic, great ingredients that are a must in my skincare. For moisturizer I use Agustinus Bader, The Cream, it contours and “sucks” in my skin and looks more snatched. Worth the money. For under eye cream I use Skinmedica instant bright, game changer!
Thanks for the videos.
Yes to video in RLT! 🎉
Love this video!! But one thing here, I’m 30 now and I’ve been using eye cream since I’m 18 and I don’t have eye wrinkle. Maybe one small fine line when I exaggerate my smile. I do believe in eye creams.
I just watched a video from Claudia Glows and she was interviewing a doctor who has products with Methylene Blue, stating it is better than Retin A. What are your thoughts on it?
Lumier is a GAMECHANGER. I did not originally believe in “expensive” skincare but i got my hands on a decent sized sample of this and I have seen a good reduction in my dark circles. I’ve tried eye creams with caffeine in it you name it but this is the only one I really feel has helped my dark circles. The price is steep but sooo worth it.
Very informative. Thank you. Two questions, one on the topic and the other not. First, if you are using a RX Retinoid, and it is supposed to do what many of these other products claim to do (like building collagen for example) will the use of other products do that much more? I hope my question is not too convoluted. My second question is one I would love to see a video on. If you apply skin care and wash it off a couple of hours later (say you work out and then shower) does it need to be reapplied. I know sunscreen would, but things that are absorbed like serums sink in. I was just curious about the science behind this. Thanks again.
Great question! I'd also love to know. I do this purposefully, aka short contact therapy, for products I know I can't tolerate overnight like prescription HQ. I'd love to know the science behind if this works. how long do you have to leave it on to reap benefits, etc. @drsam
When I was 16-18 I’d save all my money and go to Nemain Marcus and then I discovered Paula’s choice (before it was so over priced to me now) I use everything from the drugstore except I do order European sunscreens that’s where I decide to splurge (no more than 30$ a tube) and my skin has never looked better and I’ve been on tretinoin since I was 14 and I’m 28 now.
Which ones do you like ?
I’m curious if you would ever try the Reviv ultimate serum. It is touted as a complete dupe ingredient by ingredient side by side to skin medica TNS and has some added growth factors. It’s 100$ and is a tiny bit of a pain to get because they have gotten so popular that they’ve had to ramp up production so it takes 3 weeks sometimes to get but it is a beautiful serum one of the only growth factor serums that I’ve used that doesn’t pill and ball up on me. I’ve only been using for a few weeks so can’t comment on efficacy but so far so good fragrance free as well!
Yes to a video on red light therapy!
Origins isn't inexpensive but I always buy it online when it's on sale, sometimes up to 305 off. I use its Plantscription serum in the morning with its Perfect World SPF cream on top. At night, I use .025 Tretinoin under Origins' Perfect World moisturizing cream. I always wear sunglasses, and a visor when out in the sun. I use Botox in my forehead for migraines, and then get it around my eyes for any crow's eyes. I'm 59 and have been doing this since I was 36. I don't have a wrinkle or dark spot. I thrilled because I often get compliments about my skin but more importantly, get asked advice about how I care for my skin - start early and be consistent!
Dr. Ellis, what are your thoughts regarding Neocutis growth factor serum and the AnteAGE MD growth factor serum and accelerator serum ( the accelerator is supposed to be applied after the growth factor serum)? I’ve been using skin medica advanced growth factor serum for years but I heard these serums are better. Please advise❤️❤️
Please do video best actives for severe melasma thanks
Are the Alastin Restorative Skin Complex and Skinbetter Trio Rebalancing Moisturizers safe for acne-prone skin?
Please the same with OTC and review the new L'oreal water cream? thanks.
Do you have any thoughts on the M-61 brand? I love the powerglow peel wipes.
Could you please talk about your take on Augustinus Bader products and if there are other brands comprable to them. Thanks!
What are your thoughts on the NIRA Anti-Aging laser at home treatment device?
Please review Skinbetter Science
Alto defense serum
Alpharet overnight cream
