You guys are amazing. I've tried having honest conversations with several dermatologists and they treated me as an inconvenience, forcing me out the door without any answers. The time and honesty you put into your explanations are life changing. Thank you so much.
I agree! My derm is pretty good but I always feel like she doesn’t truly listen to my concerns or answer my questions as detailed as I’d like. I definitely feel rushed every time I go except for when this “red puffy hand” syndrome showed up and then she was all in. Literally felt like only bc it’s something she hasn’t seen often. It’s a shame we can get more info and have more questions answered for free on UA-cam when we pay our docs so much! Thanks for all you two do for us!
@@charlescoffey695 Unfortunately, lazy ones. My last experience, the derm wouldn't even see me. She sent out an assistant who just wrote me a prescription and tried to sell me overpriced sunscreen. When I tried to explain my history with tretinoin, she just crossed it off the script and wrote in adapalene. Didn't bother asking any questions. Could not be bothered. I left the office and they had the nerve to ask me for a review the day after. 4 bad experiences with 4 different derms and I'm about ready to stop trying.
Y’all have to remember that a lot of derms aren’t skincare specialist, a lot of them are there to treat skin diseases and conditions not necessarily anti aging
@@jennahuang1525 100% but it's hard to vocalize what your skin needs are without being asked a few questions and getting answers from someone you consider a professional. If a derm told me my painful cystic acne was better handled with a specialist, I'd be on my way..... but not a single one has attempted to find out. My experiences have just been not so great.
I tried the drunk elephant c firma and noticed minimal improvements to my skin. I am currently on my second bottle of the youth to the people vitamin c + caffeine and I love it. I noticed improvements in my hyperpigmentation almost immediately (about a week of use) and I prefer the texture so much more than the drunk elephant serum. I found DE was quite a tacky texture, and didn’t really absorb fully into my skin and just sat on top. YTTP is way better in texture though still a bit sticky, and absorbs within a couple of minutes. Highly recommend to anybody !
Skinceuticals vitamin C: $160. Easily broken down but the vitamin E helps to stabilize the vitamin C. Founded by a dermatologist but L’Oréal bought them out. Vitamin c for collagen synthesis, helps with hyperpigmentation. Some don’t tolerate this very well, some do. More sensitive skin doesn’t like it. New product slyamrin CF or something like that for sensitive skin. Maelove skin glow is a good dupe. Paula’s choice ce ferulic acid Drmtlgy ce ferulic Drunk elephant vitamin c product Products do perform pretty similarly. Similar to retinoids in terms of what they do. If only can afford one, pick the retinoid put your money there. It’s great if you can use both but irritation can make it so we can’t use both. Retinoids- older studies show tretinoin is much better but new study came out saying comparable efficacy. Prescription Rx is a good idea esp with insurance. Skin better science - AlphaRet- retinol + lactic acid Arazlo Alterno- hylauronic acid easier to tolerate Arazlo Trifarotene less irritating Many studies done for acne and not hyperpigmentation or wrinkles. Retin-A first one for anti-aging and acne and has the most research. Go to for a lot of people can be tretinoin. If over the counter try alpharet. Hyperpigmentation: gold standard is hydroquinone. Use for short period of time lower strengths with a dermatologist so don’t get permanent exogenous ochronosis. Tri-luma great for this. Best to see dermatologist for this. Skinceuticals discoloration defense is great over the counter. Melasma or freckles. Faded topicals- could be irritating but very effective and only $36 Cyspera- good for melasma Always wear spf with whatever you use, protect your investment. Procedures are worth your money. Lasers, microneedling, light therapy, they are a focused treatment for these same things and get great results. When you start using over $200 skincare consider treatments.
I have tried almost all of the popular Vitamin C serums on the market (including all of the ones mentioned in this video), but none of them worked. When I finally tried the SkinCeuticals serum, I noticed a difference within two weeks. It's still a work in process, but it's definitely money well spent.
OKAY. You guys won me over. I'm subscribing. I'm a family physician and have been watching your videos for a few weeks. I REALLY appreciate your effort to provide evidence to support your statements/claims/opinions/thoughts. I will be recommending this channel to my patients who want to correct their skin issues. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Would love to see a whole video dedicated to procedures! Not enough transparency on all the different procedures available, how they work and what the cost. For some reason people are hesitant to admit when they have had these done and I think they need to be more talked about.
I SECOND THIS!!!! I have horrible melasma and have heard about RF micro needling as a treatment but would love to hear professional opinion on the best melasma treatments since none of them are cheap 😅
Agree. There are so many procedures (Ultherapy, fraxel laser, thread lift, fillers etc), it would be great to hear about them (pros, cons, length of time they last, what happens when you stop, etc).
@@melanie.3837 that is what I am searching UA-cam for right now lol. I’d love a contrast and compare with general price points. I’m considering laser resurfacing but some of the videos have me afraid now!
Every dermatologist I've ever been too brushes off my concerns (Extremely sensitive skin, acne scarring and dealing with blackheads and large pores) and instead wants to sell sell me products that are $500-$700 dollars. It's insane. And I wait MONTHS for these appointments. I've tried some of the products and they are just to harsh for my skin. I've even told them I'm good with whatever proceedure they think might be necessary. But if you aren't getting Botox and fillers they don't have time for you. (I'm in Calgary.) That's how I ended up here on UA-cam with you two so THANK YOU for doing these videos.
I’m a pharmacy student graduating in a few days and I LOVE these videos. They give so much insight into new prescription skin care products which we do not learn a lot about in school and helps me to better counsel my patients. Thanks doctors for helping me be a better pharmacist!
I have rosacea and sensitive skin and have had NO issues with the C E Ferulic. Being in Australia a lot of the dupes aren’t available but i don’t mind splurging on the C E Ferulic because it’s my only “luxury” product in my routine and my routine so simple. Retinoids make my rosacea flairs so much more intense (the retinoids itself doesn’t flair me but I would only have to think about the sun to flair my skin!). Just goes to show that skin is SO personal!!
I’m 72 and had extensive pigmentation due to years of gardening. I recently had IPL treatments (4) and it has made a world of difference. I may go back for a few more treatments during the winter to treat some of the deeper pigmentation but as you said, and my doctor emphasized, I must wear SUNBLOCK religiously from now on or I will undo all the good results. I wish I had known this earlier in my life so my issue could have been avoided. I will be starting a retinoid regimen soon with a product that is not photo sensitive allowing me to use it morning and evening just not right away. I have to start off slowly. I’m so happy that both my grandchildren wear sunscreen regularly when outside. I just found your channel and subscribed after the first video. They are interesting and useful. Thank you.
Um okay. Estheticians aren’t the worst providers to talk to. Medical aesthetician here I have worked on patients and yielded wonderful results from more intense treatments with Sciton, Vivace, and other machinery. It is very much an industry you have to evolve in, keep up with your education and most of all take care of the patients wellbeing. I would recommend trying at least one HALO treatment, it’s an ablative/non-ablative laser that allows for penetration superficially and deeper into the layers of the skin. It’s the newer technology of the CO2 Laser 😊
I love your channel, I just started watching!! This video was super helpful. As an African American woman, I think I’ve been fear-mongered out of trying a lot of the products for hyperpigmentation just because I don’t want any adverse effects! I’ll definitely bring some of these up with my dermatologist the next time I’m in the office! Thanks so much!!
Did Dr. Shah say he officiated a wedding?! How do you work full time, make UA-cam videos, TikTok videos, Instagram videos and then go officiate a wedding on the weekend? You said you work in clinic 60 hours a week! When do you sleep?
If ONLY all dermatologists were this HONEST, I wouldn't still be dealing with acne scars and hyperpigmentation in my 40s. By the way, you guys look Great in normal clothes, we LOVE you both equally. Keep up the Grear work❤❤
It takes time to chip away at hyperpigmentation associated with sun exposure and hormonal changes. You cannot use a chemical peel to fix this issue because it temporarily fixes the problem. However if you use microdermabrasion or some other type of exfoliant that would be the better route. Peels can activate the cells that produce melanin and make your patches worse. My tip would be to always use a sunscreen of at least spf 50-60. The same applies to your acne scars. Hope that helps.
We definitely need a video on all different types of skin discoloration, hyperpigmentation, freckles, age spots, Melasma and Acne. So many creams, serums, Retinoids Vitamin A.
Love all your tips! I use the Timeless Vitamin C and have seen great visible results. I can’t attest to the collagen support but the glow, texture, and the brightening makes the product a winner for me. The airtight, opaque packaging, and the $25 price tag, and the fact that it’s going on three months of use without oxidizing makes it a good value. The ph is at the appropriate level. I have put together a great routine of inexpensive products. My tretinoin is 10 dollars a tube. I My sunscreen is the most expensive at 42. I put my money in fillers and Botox. Those treatments do make a difference but honestly it’s the sunscreen and basic skincare that does the most.
@@bunnypoop4508 triluma is also around $3. I actually just saw a tiktok about how epipens cost $35 to make but are sold for around $600 because people need them. Now only God can save us from big pharma.
I'm a rosacea sufferer and have been using the SkinBetter AlphaRet for several months. I started very slowly and have worked up to using it every 3rd night. I'm pleased with the results.
Just discovered your channel and binge watched it on my night shifts! Thank you for keeping us entertained especially through covid, love the evidence based recommendations, I've even started taking notes!
I used the skinceuticals Vitamin C/Ferulic acid for a while and switched to Maelove and I actually like the Maelove better and found it to be more effective. Thanks for this great video.
Would love to hear about some of the more permanent procedures including microneedling, CO2 laser, chemical peels, Picosure, thermals…etc. Great content, btw!
Yep go see a professional dermatologist (legit MD with solid reviews). Lots of options with the most aggressive being ablative lasers. If you go this route look at TRL lasers…much less recover time vs CO2
I've had microneedlign and chemical peels done in a derm's office. They're fantastic procedures, but you MUST go in clinic to have them done and make sure you go to someone who is licensed. If you have someone do these procedures and they're not done in a sterile environment or with someone who knows what they're doing, you could cause a lot of scarring and damage to the skin. But both procedures did wonders for my acne scarring and hyperpigmentation. Just never ever ever do them at home, especially the microneedling. You can do some chem peels like The Ordinary's AHA/BHA peel, but you need to be very careful about that because you can cause damage. An esthetician will be able to do more intense peels though, which is why I'd recommend going to a professional rather than doing them at home.
Dr. Brenner’s CE Ferulic is also an excellent dupe for SkinCeuticals. Have been using SC for many years and my skin cannot tell the difference. Agree that retinoids are the gold standard in skincare.
You can get the same vitamin C, E, Ferulic for far less at Timeless. It is true that Skinceuticals pioneered it, but nonetheless, money is a real thing.
SHe sold the company years ago....they're selling products that she mocked for years, including several eye creams, they stopped reviewing products, the site was a joke, they rated ALL their products 5 STARS and they were ALL placed under "Best product" and recommendation lists. It's just a Big company owned by a corporation now, don't kid yourself about all this research etc...those days are gone...She's selling half ounce bottles of serum and charging for over a full ounce. That company became everything it reported to despise. Corporate Greed, Paula is the biggest hypocrite on the planet. TRUTH
I would love to see the eye cream segment! Feel like this is an area too many deems forget to address in their videos. Can’t wait to see you deep dive into it soon
That's because dermatologist will tell you to use you moisturizer around your eye area. Eye cream is generally the same ingredients packaged in a small containter for 3x's the price. It's marketing.
@@jr-pr9lw yeah but eye creams really help those who have a sensitive eye area as it has fewer ingredients than a moisturizer and funnily enough, cost more; at least they still did the job. And some eye creams contain caffeine which helps in depuffing
@@-SimonRiley True! And oddly enough since I wrote that comment 6 months ago I have started using eye creams am and pm and loving them! Yes to the caffeine too.
There are so many amazing dupes for SkinCeuticals Vitamin C with the same active ingredients in very similar concentrations. I've used a few of them but the one that stood out the most for me was BioBare's Vitamin C,B,E, Ferulic. I found it's just as good as SkinCeuticals, if not better.
I’ve been a user of the CE Ferulic and I just came across the BioBare’s. Loved the price compared to CE Ferulic!! Was wondering if it’s a good product. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Got it, Maelove "Glow Maker" as a dupe for Vitamin C. And Paula's Choice C15 Super Booster. And Drunk Elephant C Formula. And that retinoids are more effective than Vitamin C, but that they can both be used (assuming no irritation).
A good dupe for the Skinceuticals Vitamin C, in my opinion, is Glow Maker by Maelove. I love it, it has 15% l-ascorbic acid, Vitamin E, Ferulic acid, and Hyaluronic Acid. It's also only $30.
@@ziggy33399 This video is a year old, and it is quite possible they were not familiar with any good dupes for it at the time. To further support this, Dr. Maxfield actually mentioned Glow Maker in a live he did more recently.
I use to be an aesthetician and have use hundreds of skin care products and brands. Even used TNS Essential Serum for two years. Which is about $300 a bottle. I have been using The Ordinary line for over a year and my skin has never looked better. So inexpensive and so worth it.
Bottom line: In reality you only need three products. Retinoid, moisturizer, and sunscreen - EVERY DAY. AM cleanse, moisturize. sunscreen. PM cleanse, moisturize, retinoid. The simpler you make your routine, the more likely you will be consistent over the long run.
Watched you guys for a few months now & honestly I’ve never had “dewy” skin in my life! I have oily acne prone skin. Thank you so much for all your amazing advice! I love learning from you guys!💗
Not original commentor but I hope this helps someone since I'm the same: Step 1: Drink more water. Dehydration raises oil production Step 2: Wash face no more than 2 times a day and avoid any type of scrub or stuff with SLS. Skin damage raises oil production. Step 3: Moisturize in the morning and night. Good moisturizers are hard to find. I find lotions to work better than creams on my face. Gotta lock in the moisture to reduce dehydration. Step 4: Since sebum production would have reduced in a few days, retinol will finally be more effective, so use a serum after face wash and before moisturizer. Step 5: Do not scratch or touch your face. Let your skin heal :) I still get oily occasionally but its only when I'm dehydrated. Acne is practically gone.
I just bought and started with Alpharet 3 days ago based on your recommendation and you’re right, I didn’t get irritation at all and I have very sensitive skin. It felt good on my skin. Thank you for all you do! I’ll be patient and wait to see the results.
I have had secondary milia all over my cheeks (developed after a C02 laser for acne scars) for 2 years. (I am 61 years old)). I started using tretinoin but nothing has helped to bring them to a head or clear. Recently I started using Droplette glycolic capsules and I was seeing some improvement. The big breakthrough occurred when I added a growth factor serum to my routine. I couldn’t believe how quickly I started seeing these milia flatten out or come to the surface. Just wanted to mention this for my first post. Just found you guys this morning!
Thank you so much for these videos! I finally feel like I have permission (and the knowledge) to stop aspiring to afford overpriced skin care products! What a relief. I’m curious what eye creams, if any, do you use and recommend? I’ll also double check to make sure you haven’t done a video on this topic yet! Those seem to be one item that is always a higher price point. Thanks again! Subscribed!
I just joined the skin scare bandwagon and it's been so confusing and frustrating until I found you guys. Finally! Info that is understandable, approachable and feasible. Ya'll cute too. Thanks!
Thank you both! I am a lifetime skincare junkie and learned back in my early 30s that Tretinoin can save you a ton of money and provide you with superior results. It is so great to get info from real dermatologists (doctors) as you help me facilitate more meaningful discussions with my derm.
I ground up some Ester C (vitamin) and mixed it with bio-oil, Vitamin E and Cereva moisturizing cream. This brightened up my skin and I got some compliments.
Loved this! I’m 52 and have used SkinCeuticals for over 15 years. Many times I’ve had to budget and The 1 product I can’t live without (and have tried) is CE Fruelic or Phloretin CF. Fruelic can be too heavy so I lean towards the Phloretin option. I agree support the company that does the science if you can afford it. Now where’s that eye cream video 😁
Can you advice me please Melissa. I am 43 and stay in the UK. I have uneven skin tone on my face and dark circles around the eye. Which one of the c e ferulic should I buy. So desperate to an an even tone on my face. My other body color is lighter and better. Will really appreciate your help
@@shakirahmustapha7160 You can click on the items in the description box, all of them are very similar to the skinceuticals (listed first) but are you using a retinoid? That’s where I invest my money, hope that helps
These real life comparisons about products, procedures, efficacy & cost are so unbelievably helpful! Thank you guys so much. I am an aesthetician & always learn so much. I’m also a consumer….. so 💜!
You guys are so adorable and I love your videos! I do buy expensive skincare products from time to time as long as they work but a less expensive dupe is always a plus. (Fleur and bees eye cream is 20 dollars whereas tata harpers is over 100…and the fleur and bee works just as well!)
It would be interesting to hear what you guys think about Regimen Labs. They have an antioxidant cocktail called Vitamin X - which is basically C E Ferulic + 8 other antioxidants at a different PH - and a hyperpigmentation cocktail called Level, which is similar to the one you mentioned.
Interesting! Though 47$ for a 30ml serum is still quite expensive... I use Geek and Gorgeous's Skinceutical dupe : a vitamin C + E + Ferulic that costs 10.50€.
Will have to check this one out, myself. How does it feel on the skin with the partial propanediol base ? Sometimes that can feel a bit oily if it's used alone, but since it looks like this is mostly water-based, I'm guessing it'll have a good skinfeel, like the serums that use water and ethoxydiglycol as their bases. Another ascorbic acid serum that cocktails several antioxidants is the Vitamin C 20 % serum from SkinActives Scientific. Last I pH tested it, it was around 2.5, and it's been one of my favorites for a few years now.
Great, great video. I agree with Dr. Maxwell and Sha's comment 6:57 on "If you had the choice, I would pick Retinoid", but if you are pregnant, you don't have a choice. So that's why I'm glad you spend so much time on discussion Vitamine C products 🙂
Correct doc!!! Me too, Retin-A everytime. Wasting money with the C. Tried the la Roche Posay Lipikar moisturizer balm as you suggested. Great moisturizer 😁. I'm 65, been using Retin-A for 30 years. My skin is normal to slightly oily. Live in Colorado. For sunspots IPL treatments and sunscreen. Works great. Use Hydralunic acid sometimes but honestly glycerin is better. Love Cerave Healing balm and Vaseline. I just use sunscreen only for the day. My skin is very healthy. I have no need for skin makeup. With skincare so much marketing$$$ so they can make money making us we believe we "need" products that we really don't. Appreciate you both!
I wish all dermatologists were this good 😭 I’ve always had bad experiences & have to change dermatologists bc most of them were old man and retired or went to big cities 🥺
Oh yeah, I had an issue with my dermatologist as well (he prescribed me accutane) and I didn’t want to, but I tried it anyway horrible side effects… I stopped going and stopped taking my RX . It is hard finding good dermatologist now days
Paula’s Choice is good. I used to use it when it first came out and was a reasonably priced option of good quality. She’s completely forgotten her roots and has priced herself out of reach for much of her original customer base. So I have a sour taste about her line.
I’m from Australia and I absolutely love your wealth of knowledge and how “down to earth” you both deliver the message - Thank you so much 🙏 I also love how well you compliment each other giving such excellent skincare advice and with opposing opinions at times, makes it even more real 👍 Having great eye candy also makes your videos so much more enjoyable - lucky wives! 😉 Please keep posting ❤
Thank you for providing such rich information in a humorous way. I have been a skin care fanatic since Clinique first came out with their men’s skincare line in the late 70s. At 64, my skin tone and texture is great with very few wrinkles. You mentioned in another videos that one of the side effects of Botox and fillers is fewer wrinkles. I used both in my 30s and 40s. I also appreciate the low price point high quality brand you share. I love inkey, The Ordinary and Naturium.
Very handsome young men! Yes, it pains me to hear trusted dermatologists recommending pricey products. Ive tried several Vit C products hoping to avoid Skinceuticals. I haven’t noticed much after finishing a bottle of Timeless and Maelove. I will give Paulas choice and Drmtlgy a try. You both have same stance as Dr Dray re:efficacy of Vit C As for hyperpigmentation, I am asian and want to avoid rebound pigmentation of HQ, so that ingredient was never an option for me. I also need to avoid lasers due to my skin tone. Yes return on your investment is the key to it all!!!
I don't always buy someones elses product. In fact as a nurse, I do alot of research; I buy the ingredients, go to the producer and look at the scienctific data of the product, then make my own recipes that give me the same results for cheaper. And, I use alot of natural elements as well as listed in many products in this video. I think having some VI Peels done, to get rid of some of that rough skin, Melasma, acne, etc can do wonders. My own complexion has greaterly benefited from VI Peels, which I now do myself for cheaper and it really helped the product penetrate... At age 60, my skin is not only crazy soft, but also glowing and getting better with each year and I don't look anything near 60...
I'd love to see updated studies comparing adapalene to tret for anti-aging, as well! Partially for selfish reasons, since I have rosacea and just can't tolerate tret. But also because adapalene is so widely available OTC now. If y'all had to guess, could you see adapalene being almost as effective as tret? (Also, love your content!!)
@@randomroses1494 Because then there wouldn't be a comparison between tret and adapalene. Saying that adapalene works isn't the same is saying it works as well as tret, you know?

I use both together and their anazing. They work really well but obviously Vit C is AM and and Retinol is PM. Defintley has done some anti aging for me I gotta be honest.
My derm prescribed me Arazlo for post-acne scarring and it's been shown to have similar effects to microneedling with 6 months of use. Can't wait to start it! Also, Dermatica does tretinoin + hydroquinone 4% for $30/month subscription.
I think it’s important to point out the gateway to in-office procedures as well luxury cosmetic over the counters. The price barriers have thankfully caused an explosion of at home devices as well as OTC dupes. So true! 100 years of using Skinceuticlas won’t provide the same result as in office treatments. A Derm visit & Rx topicals are potentially cheaper in long run. (My Tretinoin is only $65 and lasts ~ 3 mos.) And I appreciate the healthy skepticism on the benefits of Vit c & you discussing the new RTC that indicates otc retinol could be as effective as RX retinoids. My motto with any and all skincare is do your research, make a plan, go low and slow & “remain cautiously optimistic”!
Ya'll should definitely do a video where you review incredibly expensive and cheap brands!! From Bobby Brown, to Tatcha, Origins, Peter Thomas Roth, etc. vs. Olay, N°7, Neutrogena, etc.
I'm so glad you guys are finally going to do a whole video on melasma! Literally, there just aren't videos and info out there about how to treat it. @@Megan-fh7jn Hi Megan, I used Triluma and it helped, but I wasn't using it in the best way. First of all, Trilima will go bad in just a few weeks, so you have a limited amount of time to use it. It will turn green and become ineffective in less than a month. I would say put up with peeling and irritation and use it daily while it's still good. Also, I made the mistake of using it on my whole face, which made me stop using it early due to the immense dryness. This resulted in the top portion of the melasma on my cheeks going away, but the bottom portion of the patches remaining. I would suggest just using it on the patches, and using it daily despite the side effects that will go away once you stop using it. I hope this helps.

Was hoping SKII ($200) would be reviewed here since it’s become mainstream in the western market. Maybe Doctorly can do a video on Korean and Japanese skincare products?
Agree with Dr. Shah. I’ve been using Altreno since March 2020 & love it! Such an elegant form of tretinoin. I’ve used the Skinceuticals C E Ferulic for many, many years & it is worth the higher cost. It’s the only vitamin C I’ll use on my face. I store it in the refrigerator & have never had it oxidize. I’ve tried the Timeless vitamin C & it’s not as effective - so I use it only on my neck & top of hands.
Please make a video highlighting in office procedures to help treat melasma. If you can cover approximate cost, down time and possible side effects. Thanks guys for great content!
I use CE Ferulic almost every morning. I absolutely love this product and it’s results. It is super pricey but will look into the other products you guys suggested to save money
I use it it daily. Face an neck. From 3-5 nice size drops depending on skin fatigue. I would say be ready to buy a bottle around a three month mark. Or you could stick to face only and opt for like 2-3 drops and I would push that up to five months. Just depends on how much daily use.
Even when I wasn’t employed, which lasts over a year, I cut out many thing and a lot of my skin care. Never this product. A couple years back I stopped using it and the magic wore off. This product along with a sunscreen and moisturizer, is an absolute must.
I personally love the Timeless Skincare dupe for the CE Ferulic serum. It stays stable longer compared to the Skinceuticals one _(probably because they use they double the Ferulic)_ and it brightens/lightens my own skin better _(probably due to the lower pH & higher vitamin c amount)_
@@peggysmyth6110 Only con is when you first start using it, it has no problem giving you the middle finger in the form of stinging & irritation lol. Once your skin acclimates it’s perfect though
I would like the doctors to review it.. but on their website it has very short stability period vs. SkinCeuticals where did you get it stays stable longer? Also it is missing some of the key stabilization ingredients SkinCeuticals has.
@@SingingAesthetician It has 1% alpha tocopherol, 1% ferulic acid & two preservatives: one of which is BenzylAlcohol _(which doubles as an additional stabilizer)_ Along with Refrigeration + The opaque airless pump bottle the serum stays stable FAR longer than advertised. Thank you for going over high end skin care products … I use Neutrogena & Clinique for eye creams because of sensitivity. Have found way too much fragrance in pricier products but a good face serum is worth it!
Great video guys! I love the SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic but can't justify spending $166. Last year, I switched to Naturium Tranexamic Acid 5%. It has Licorice Extract, Tranexamic Acid (5%), Kojic Acid (5%), and Niacinamide, it's only $19 for one ounce and it's effective. you can get it at Target. To reduce potential irritation (I use Retin A at night), I use it four days per week, on non consecutive days. That way, I get the benefits without the irritation. It's pretty much a dupe for SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense. I tried Faded but oh lord did it smell to high heaven! 🤢🤢 I could not get past it.
HM i wanted to try the Maelove because of the reviews but so many claim the Timeless Vitamin C is major dupe for the Skinceuticals. Suprized you didn't mention that one.
Love learning about the different products but I am confused about how to “layer “ them. I’m older and layering is new to me. Love your teaching style.
As an MD Scientist please note that hydroquinone has been FINALLY banned in the US as part of the CARES act, with little fanfare due to the news being bombarded mainly about Covid. It has been banned for many years in Europe, Austrailia, Japan & other parts of the world. It is cytotoxic and has many other issues so I’m perplexed that you’re both promotingthis ingredient!
Out of every product that was shown on this video sunscreen by far change my skin texture the most. I even use sunscreen on days with overcast. So many people compliment me on the quality and youthfulness of my skin.
I don't currently have this first product that you mentioned as I am broke, but have used it in the past and agree it IS the best and it does work quite well.
I tried the Maelove twice and the Paula's Choice booster once at different times in my life and saw zero results from either (I LOVE the Skinceuticals, best results my skin has ever seen from a product, but I can't stomach the price tag). The Timeless Vitamin C with ferulic acid however seems to do everything the Skinceuticals did except it's a little less brightening, I would HIGHLY recommend that one
And what’s more, comes in better, airtight packaging! I don’t understand these Vitamin C serums in glass bottles that get exposed to light and air 🤷🏻♀️.
good point about it being cheaper to see a dermatologist. My dermatologist prescribed a cream that took care of my redness for $15 compared to the super expensive products out there.
Hey Docs! Thanks for a great video. Just wanted to make a quick comment about your discussion on sunscreen and hyperpigmentation. It might be worth it to note that for some people chemical sunscreens can actually cause hyper pigmentation. At least in my case, and with many other people I’ve talk to, oxybenzone ( and possibly some of the other chemical sunscreens) were the major factor in causing dark blotches on my skin. I know it’s totally tough to get so much information into a short video. I really appreciate the time and effort you’re taking and all of the great information! Thanks so much!
That makes complete sense since mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier that reflect UV rays, and chemical sunscreen ingredients absorb UV rays which is converted to heat and released from the body.
I bought the one from Drunk Elephant 🐘 and it burned me so bad, in fact it was a severe burn it took me weeks to recover and everything made me allergic after that. Months later I bought the one from Pacifica that is supposed to be vegan but I got pimples which I have never had or suffered from that 😔, I guess vitamin C is not for everyone. I would like to see a video about it because I felt cheated after seeing so many videos speaking so highly of this product
I don't know about that retinol / tretinoin study. I tried retinol for over 8 months and saw little improvement. Then I got my doctor to give me tretinoin (0.05%) and I could see huge results after even a month and a half. Mind you, the tretinoin definitely created redness and skin peeling and such but it was actually working. Worth the tradeoff. Now I just mix the tret. with moisturizer 50/50 in my hands then apply and it makes it a lot more manageable.
Thank you so much for all the help and information you provide. I went to a dermatologist and they were not helpful. My dermatologist of years retired. He was a great doctor but he’s not available any longer. God bless you and thank you. Linda Rose
The Drunk Elephant C-Firma really does work! Thanks for reminding me of it. It's something I would use in the winter. I tried TriLuma, but it seemed to GIVE me spots that won't go away! What can I do about that?
What kind of drs were you seeing...sad and bad!
Skincare so expensive that you had to wear suits lmao!! 🤣🤣
Lol
Lol
This is exactly what they said in the beginning of video!
Haha they put some respect on this video is what happened 😂
😂😂😂
I just got into Paula’s Choice so I’m so glad to hear it’s recommended and trusted.
Can you do an episode on non invasive, anti aging procedures? Ex. IPL, laser resurfacing, ultherapy etc.?
Yes, please!
Yes I want this too!
I want info on this too!
Yes! Also I loved the caveat about darker skin tones. Would be great to have a dedicated section on treating dark skin.
Yes!!!!!
Paula’s choice ce ferulic acid
Drmtlgy ce ferulic
Drunk elephant vitamin c product
Products do perform pretty similarly.
Skin better science - AlphaRet- retinol + lactic acid
Arazlo
Alterno- hylauronic acid easier to tolerate
Arazlo
Trifarotene less irritating
Many studies done for acne and not hyperpigmentation or wrinkles.
Faded topicals- could be irritating but very effective and only $36
Cyspera- good for melasma
Always wear spf with whatever you use, protect your investment.
Procedures are worth your money. Lasers, microneedling, light therapy, they are a focused treatment for these same things and get great results. When you start using over $200 skincare consider treatments.
Thank you for the summary! Really helped me pay attention to the video without worrying about taking notes at the same time
Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏼
Unfortunately - when sensitive skin can tolerate the dupe - it is not nearly as effective either.🤷🏽
I have tried almost all of the popular Vitamin C serums on the market (including all of the ones mentioned in this video), but none of them worked. When I finally tried the SkinCeuticals serum, I noticed a difference within two weeks. It's still a work in process, but it's definitely money well spent.
I agree
Great idea 👍🏽
I have acne scarring and I would love to treat them at home U can't afford to go for chemical peels or special treatment
Hi, try Vivier skin care. 😊
I’m a pharmacy student graduating in a few days and I LOVE these videos. They give so much insight into new prescription skin care products which we do not learn a lot about in school and helps me to better counsel my patients. Thanks doctors for helping me be a better pharmacist!
You guys totally change my point of view about doctors . Your personality and attitude is inspiring.
Yes, please do a video on lasers. Every place that has them, calls them different things. Really hard to know exactly what ur getting.
Maybe in his fantasy
Sleep is for the weak. 😂
He doesn’t do it all at the same
Time!duh!
He doesn't have kids.
Don't ask dumb questions...
See videos from Dr Alexis Stephens and Dr. V

U should watch the youtube channel from Cassandra Bankson. She has a huge knowledge of skincare brands that works. She's qualified.
Where do you get your tretinoin?
Which sunscreen are you using?
tretinoin in India costs less than 3 dollars. its working great for my acne marks 🙂
Same in my country. They’re selling it for so expensive for no reason.
What what percent % is the medication though
@@bunnypoop4508 we have all percentages in my country. The US is just in late stage capitalism.
@@flowlikewater6576 I don't believe you. Give me a link

I'm a rosacea sufferer and have been using the SkinBetter AlphaRet for several months. I started very slowly and have worked up to using it every 3rd night. I'm pleased with the results.
It is working with fine lines like tretenoin?
Thanks for posting
Just discovered your channel and binge watched it on my night shifts! Thank you for keeping us entertained especially through covid, love the evidence based recommendations, I've even started taking notes!
I used the skinceuticals Vitamin C/Ferulic acid for a while and switched to Maelove and I actually like the Maelove better and found it to be more effective. Thanks for this great video.
Really? Do you recommend it for sensitive skin?
Thank you for this!!
Would love to hear about some of the more permanent procedures including microneedling, CO2 laser, chemical peels, Picosure, thermals…etc. Great content, btw!
I’d love to hear the docs’ opinion on Lyma laser. It’s a £2k at home laser. Is it worth it?
Agree, and the best home devices))
@@ladycaticorn2950 I did a series of microneedling and it really help...also facial accupucture.
It is true that Skinceuticals pioneered it, but nonetheless, money is a real thing.
ok but y'all look SO good in suits !!
So glad to hear someone talk about Paula's Choice. Been using her products for over 25 years and love the research behind her products.

Yeah. I do C in the morning with sunblock. Retinoids at night.
Yes. I apply tretanoin at night with a moisturizer first and Skinceuticals CE Ferulic in the am.
A good dupe for the Skinceuticals Vitamin C, in my opinion, is Glow Maker by Maelove. I love it, it has 15% l-ascorbic acid, Vitamin E, Ferulic acid, and Hyaluronic Acid. It's also only $30.
They said there’s no dupe for it.
@@ziggy33399 what about timeless CE? Are they not aware of dupes or don’t think they are dupes. It is unclear.
😂😂😂
@@ziggy33399 This video is a year old, and it is quite possible they were not familiar with any good dupes for it at the time. To further support this, Dr. Maxfield actually mentioned Glow Maker in a live he did more recently.
You two are seriously the cutest docs I have ever seen.
Agreed! They are sooo handsome and intelligent😍😍.
And soft spoken
I agree! 😉
I use to be an aesthetician and have use hundreds of skin care products and brands. Even used TNS Essential Serum for two years. Which is about $300 a bottle. I have been using The Ordinary line for over a year and my skin has never looked better. So inexpensive and so worth it.
Bottom line:
In reality you only need three products. Retinoid, moisturizer, and sunscreen - EVERY DAY.
AM cleanse, moisturize. sunscreen.
PM cleanse, moisturize, retinoid.
The simpler you make your routine, the more likely you will be consistent over the long run.

I’m trying to be like u my boy
@@SHK-16 yes I hope we get “the plan”
Not original commentor but I hope this helps someone since I'm the same:
Step 1: Drink more water. Dehydration raises oil production
Step 2: Wash face no more than 2 times a day and avoid any type of scrub or stuff with SLS.
Let your skin heal :)
I still get oily occasionally but its only when I'm dehydrated. Acne is practically gone.
I just bought and started with Alpharet 3 days ago based on your recommendation and you’re right, I didn’t get irritation at all and I have very sensitive skin. It felt good on my skin. Thank you for all you do! I’ll be patient and wait to see the results.
Skinceuticals will always be my go to as I know it works & many local dermatologists suggest it after any facial treatment.

Are you currently using these? If you’re, please share your thoughts on these products!

Paula’s Choice is good. I used to use it when it first came out and was a reasonably priced option of good quality. She’s completely forgotten her roots and has priced herself out of reach for much of her original customer base. So I have a sour taste about her line.

This is one of my favorite videos you all have done! I loved how you compared these top products with dupes. Thanks for this!
I got so excited when you mentioned Maelove because thats the vitamin c serum I use!
Thank you for pointing this. I too want to know
Why not try it and report back on your results in a year.
@@randomroses1494 Because then there wouldn't be a comparison between tret and adapalene. Saying that adapalene works isn't the same is saying it works as well as tret, you know?
Bagatin, E., Gonçalves, H. D. S., Sato, M., Almeida, L. M. C., & Miot, H. A. (2018). Comparable efficacy of adapalene 0.3% gel and tretinoin 0.05% cream as treatment for cutaneous photoaging. European Journal of Dermatology, 28(3), 343-350.
@@kahladavis9858 Do a half-faced comparison?
I would love to see a study where they put retinol and vitamin c head-to-head. Until then I will take your advice and skip the vitamin c!
Hi! How has the Arazlo worked for you??
I think it’s important to point out the gateway to in-office procedures as well luxury cosmetic over the counters. The price barriers have thankfully caused an explosion of at home devices as well as OTC dupes.
So true! 100 years of using Skinceuticlas won’t provide the same result as in office treatments. A Derm visit & Rx topicals are potentially cheaper in long run. (My Tretinoin is only $65 and lasts ~ 3 mos.)
And I appreciate the healthy skepticism on the benefits of Vit c & you discussing the new RTC that indicates otc retinol could be as effective as RX retinoids.
My motto with any and all skincare is do your research, make a plan, go low and slow & “remain cautiously optimistic”!
I appreciate that you two promote affordable skincare products, but also don’t mind spending my money when it’s really worth it.
I'm currently 1 month in on retinol at night, and I just bought the Faded serum after watching this video. I'll be using it when I don't have my retinol on.
agreed! I am only 1 week in on TriLuma.... fingers crossed for you and me!
Awesome! Thanks for the info!!! I dont have the greatest derm. She didn't explain it at all to me.... I am now in the beginning of the peeling phase, I will hold strong!
@@Megan-fh7jn my dermatologist put me on oral transexamic acid for my severe melasma and it is a miracle worker!!! It’s an off label use but you wouldn’t believe the results-the melasma is almost gone!

Love this video 🙌🏽👏🏽. You two are awesome 💛
As I am getting "wiser" 42 now, I believe in using the Skinceuticals Vit C 😊. I have spent so much money, definitely more than $160 trying the dupes and nothing has helped my dark spots.
In addition, using fewer products that actually work is a money saver 👍🏽
Cleanser, Vit C, moisturizer, sunscreen
Cleanser, tretinoin, moisturizer
Same, Jackie. I’m 49 & have used Skinceuticals C E Ferulic in my AM routine for years & Altreno at bedtime (like it much better than tretinoin cream or gel).
@@drpeggyhudson
Hi Peggy, where can I purchase Altreno and what is the cost? Thanks
@@patm6412 Hi Pat! I thought I replied to this, but can’t find it. My dermatologist prescribes it. With my insurance, I pay $57.50 at Walgreens for a 45gm tube (the largest size, but I think they also have a 20gm). The regular price is $115 without insurance.
It’s amazing to know that you added cyspera and skinbetter science products. Not sure if you have checked ISclinical brightening serum and complex for Melasma. I have been using it for some of my clients and they are showing amazing results. I would love for you to look into the ingredient list. As always you two are doing an amazing job. I have learned so much from your content.

I adore these two Gorgeous Doctors, I love that they are always laughing when they talk, You can tell that they really like each other, It must be a joy to work in their office. I love how honest they are, They are not afraid to say that very expensive products are not worth it and how the less expensive ones are just as good, I trust these two men more than anyone!!!
they are a couple i am glad they came out finally
I thought he mentioned his wife…?
Was hoping SKII ($200) would be reviewed here since it’s become mainstream in the western market. Maybe Doctorly can do a video on Korean and Japanese skincare products?
See Dr.Alexis Stephens channel
I love it! I use this + skinceutical ferulic serum together and skin is so uniform now. Hardly any pores etc but yes both are expensive sadly
Can you please share how many months the $166 product lasts??
I use it it daily. Face an neck. From 3-5 nice size drops depending on skin fatigue. I would say be ready to buy a bottle around a three month mark.
Or you could stick to face only and opt for like 2-3 drops and I would push that up to five months. Just depends on how much daily use.
Even when I wasn’t employed, which lasts over a year, I cut out many thing and a lot of my skin care. Never this product. A couple years back I stopped using it and the magic wore off. This product along with a sunscreen and moisturizer, is an absolute must.
@@TheIvyLens thanks...does it give you glow?
I personally love the Timeless Skincare dupe for the CE Ferulic serum. It stays stable longer compared to the Skinceuticals one _(probably because they use they double the Ferulic)_ and it brightens/lightens my own skin better _(probably due to the lower pH & higher vitamin c amount)_
I trust the Timeless CE Ferulic.
@@peggysmyth6110
Only con is when you first start using it, it has no problem giving you the middle finger in the form of stinging & irritation lol. Once your skin acclimates it’s perfect though
I would like the doctors to review it.. but on their website it has very short stability period vs. SkinCeuticals where did you get it stays stable longer? Also it is missing some of the key stabilization ingredients SkinCeuticals has.
@@SingingAesthetician It has 1% alpha tocopherol, 1% ferulic acid & two preservatives: one of which is BenzylAlcohol _(which doubles as an additional stabilizer)_
Along with Refrigeration + The opaque airless pump bottle the serum stays stable FAR longer than advertised.
The Skinceuticals one turns a pale yellow much quicker just speaking from my own personal experience
I ordered from timeless website and it was almost 4 months old and yellow.
Please make a video explaining and comparing procedures that are actually worth the money as well!!
Thank you for going over high end skin care products … I use Neutrogena & Clinique for eye creams because of sensitivity. Have found way too much fragrance in pricier products but a good face serum is worth it!
I love how great you both look all dressed up; it sure is a nice change from the scrubs. 💖
Same here. I've been using the Timeless for about 2 years and was wondering if it's a good dupe also.
Timeless has a 10% and 20% version. Skinceuticals is 15%
Dr. Dray a video the other day on timeless vs skincueticals. Worth watching.
I love you guys! Your recommendation for Versed retinol lotion was right on! I’m 74 and it made dry patches on my arms disappear. Great advice here!
👀
This doctor Shah is a con who uses his popularity and title to mislead people because he gets paid for it.
Dr Sheerene Idriss promotes hydroquinone too. Pretty sure 2% concentration is OTC in Australia.
It’s been banned over the counter, not entirely banned in the US*
Dang my dermatologist just prescribed me 8% so I’m scared to use it now
You guys are absolutely amazing and helped me change my skin care routine! Love your recommendations. Thanks!
You guys need to take a look at La Prarie, ADORE, City Beauty, Depology and give your thoughts.
This was great and I’m very excited to see your next installment on eye cream. I always use an eye cream and can’t wait to see what you recommend.
Timeless is also a great dupe! Thanks Jennifer ☺️
Do you happen to know the name of the medication? I'd like to ask my derm about it! :)

Looking forward to eye creams! And could you talk more about Botox and fillers procedures. Are they safe?
