The game has a lot of problems, specifically with the controls, however if you can get around that the game is quite great.
The ability to make so many decisions that can affect the game makes it very replayable. From simple things like killing or not killing, to how you respond to questions they can alter how the story goes.
It is a shame that the bugs and non polished nature of the game hurt it so much.

I loved Alpha Protocol. Ran almost a dozen campaigns, half of which were recruit hard mode. The other half were veteran hard mode. Gameplay was complete ass if you didn't spec into pistols and stealth, but the story was so interactive I just fell head over heels in love with it. When I first arrived in the Taiwan hub and Omen Deng commented that my stealth suit doesn't blend well in a public subway, I immediately restarted the mission in casual clothes and he praised for good field work.

That entire book was a major character assassination for the Exile. Revan, not so much, because outside of Chris Avalon's hints in KotOR 2, there was never any canon traits or character given to him, as he was a complete stand-in for the player. The Exile was not, having a history, lore, and previous character arc already that she was already aware of in the game, not having had amnesia like Revan.

True, but some gameplay elements and mechanics will be changed for quality of life improvements. Examples would be pazaak being less unfair (but then again, save scumming will stay), Ebon Hawk turret missions can come back, but with XP gained for every kill and the fact that the computer mouse can be used instead of the keyboard arrow keys, and a way better old save bonus system compared to KotOR II (seriously, picking a Male Light Sided Revan always makes sure Bastila loves him... even though some playthroughs of the very first game might not have romanced Bastila).

    • @VerdantJedi
      @VerdantJedi Рік тому +2

@@johnnyfives5416 And Scourge was just a cheap cop-out so that the novel can market and introduce the new Jedi Knight protagonist instead, to defeat the Evil Big Baddie in their SWTOR game. Scourge's vision is just a lazy plot device to take Revan and the Exile out of the picture in which he kills the Exile and got Revan imprisoned for 200 years. This development in the story feels abrupt and utterly unsatisfying as it disregards the established setups in KOTOR 2 without providing any meaningful payoffs. The plot conclusion heavily relied on the overused "I had a Force vision" trope to conveniently transition into the Jedi Knight storyline in SWTOR. How ridiculous...

The thing that always interested me too is that, in true Chris Avellone fashion, he wanted us to basically be able to lift right off from where our KOTOR 2 story ended; being able to choose whether we did go for the light side route destroying Malachor, regrouping the lost Jedi to rebuild the order and us going off into the unknown regions to bring Revan home, or the dark side option, with us as the “New Sith” leader going off to find and help Revan wage war against the true sith, leaving behind our companions and Malachor V to help prepare the galaxy for the impending invasion of these true sith. I don’t know, it just seemed to me that Chris had something in mind that very few forms of Star Wars media have; a thorough continuous storyline where we could have a consistent, personal experience

I am genuinely sad. Throughout the video I kept imagining new scenarios. Different planets. New storylines. New characters.
To be honest, personally, I think that the gameplay/gamestyle would've been better if it followed the same one from KOTOR and KOTOR 2. You can´t even imagine how interested I am now to know more about the TRUE Sith. Every concept that would've come with that. New knowledge. Hell, I think that eventually it could've tie up with the new movies, given the fact that the game supposedly would follow Revan's footsteps into the deep Unknown Regions. Not gonna lie though, I can see this happening. I don´t know why, I've got this feeling. We have all the right to dream at the moment given the fact that EA is losing the full rights of Star Wars. If any game studio would be bold enough to hire Chris Avalon to put his vision into practice and actually had a good conversation with Lucasfilm, I really think it could happen. Hell, I really think that they are watching us. You see it everywhere, in any poles, magazines, that KOTOR 3 is very much wanted. They know we would pay a good buck for it (I know I would).
I really liked the idea of progression throughout the game. And I kept imagining what would be of Revan when we actually found him. If he were to be given a voice in all this matter of the True Sith.
In my opinion, this is precisely what lacks in Star Wars at the moment. Darker stories. Not the Antagonist/Protagonist, but a general concept. Many new characters, even though they belong thousands of years BBY. I've always wanted to know a bit more about the Sith. It really could be something cool, bringing some philosophical matters into the universe, like KOTOR 2 brings, and not to paint them like the bad guys and the need to destroy them, etc. Can you imagine how Lucasfilm could develop all of those ancient Sith characters? What we could learn? The possibilities are infinite.
In the last video I was very much skeptical regarding the making of the 3rd KOTOR nowadays. Now I couldn´t care less about that, and I just want this to happen.
This is my take on KOTOR 3.
I have hope. I think all of should have it. It is not usual for some games to be so much spoken of nearly 20 years later. They are watching us and that's a good thing.
    Thank you for this video.

Everyone keeps saying that BioWare has copywrite over the game. I have a really hard time believing that since back when Lucas Arts was around one they commissioned Bioware to make the first game to begin with. For the second game LA did ask if Bioware wanted to make a 2nd game which the latter declined. LA did not ask them for permission to make a second game the second game was going to be made and it obviously was. For mmo The Old Republic I'm guessing it was still owned by Lucas Arts but EA must have requested the right if LA went under they could still keep the game up and running.

Personally, if it's not broke don't fix it. I loved KOTOR 1, and I really loved the complexity of KOTOR 2. I must have played through and beaten both games 7 or 8 times throughout my life so far. I still at 34 years old now, have a pull to go back and play through KOTOR 2 just so I can experience the story all over again.
Also I loved how OP you were towards the end of KOTOR 2. I have always loved the escapist power fantasy in games that truly provided it, and KOTOR 2 provided this in spades.
SWTOR was originally a dream of mine back in the day's of XPLAY on G4, and when it finally came out I was over the moon, but after years of playing it, and especially after the abysmal expansions, I realized that SWTOR was absolutely nothing compared to KOTOR 1, and 2.

KOTOR II had elements of the Foundation sprinkled in with the True Sith. Notice how Kreia would talk about conflict defining culture, or that the Republic had grown stagnant due to an overly long period of peace, or how Onderon and Dantooine had two distinct historical 'flashpoint' moments that would dictate those planet's histories in a very drastic way? Then Goto would talk about concepts similar to psychohistory and ideas that would be privy to Edward Gibbon. The True Sith themselves were implied to be something more akin to Asimov's Foundation: they played the long game, setting their pawns millennium in advance, and were so isolated and out of the way nobody would even notice them until it was too late.
It was just something wholly alien to what we think of Star Wars and the game was better for it. Of course if they released it now, the True Sith would be incompetent Spess Nazis and the ideal society would be one dominated by a megacorp with a suspicious animal mascot.

      Yes please.
For reference, there were other interviews with Chris Avalon talking about the True Sith and what they would've been like, and I think that's the article !00% Star Wars is trying to reference at the end. Basically, the True Sith were supposed to be based on The Shadows from Babylon 5. Horrifically powerful, brutal murder-hobos who hate the will of the Force so much that they formed an extremist ideology of worshiping warfare and death. The destruction of Taris? Nihilus's consumption of Kataar? The Mass Shadow Generator's use on Malachor V? These kinds of horrific, terrifying, and often genocidal actions would have been _commonplace_ to the True Sith, as if it were their standard tactics in basic warfare. The world you would have visited would have reflected this, each one the victim of a different event of mass destruction or slaughter brought about when the True Sith came in and conquered them. Chis Avalon also, I believe, mentions in this interview that they were originally an extremist cult with connections to Naga Sadow, likely started by him, that fled into the Unknown Regions of the Western Disk, past the Great Hyperspace Disturbance (or whatever it's called), at the end of the Great Hyperspace War.
There are also hints of the possibility of going in that direction throughout TSL, mostly in item descriptions and hidden lore. The most blatant one is the Charric disruptor rifle. The Charric was a mainstay weapon of The Chiss Ascendancy, a weapon that fired extremely potent maser blasts that not only disintegrated flesh and bone on contact and bore through the toughest shields and armor, but _also_ struck with such great concussive force that it sent targets careening back, and made it impossible for lightsabers to deflect as they would be knocked from the user's hand. This weapon is in the game, yet the Chiss were not discovered until sometime _after_ the events of TSL (somewhere between 5-50 years later). The Chiss homeworld, Csilla, was swept up in an unexplained ice age in the year 5000 BBY, the same year as the Great Hyperspace War, and is so inhospitable that the Chiss live deep under the ice, as close to the warmth of the inner planet as possible, with their underground carriage travel routes having been dug through the planet's bedrock. The world is just beyond the edge of the Western Disk, and it surprisingly close to Lehon, homeworld of the Rakata and the now-destroyed Star Forge.
I think they were setting up the possibility of the protagonist of KotOR III discovering the Chiss Ascendancy, and possibly convincing them (or some of them) to help fight back against the True Sith, who they likely would've had hostile contact with before, explaining both their ice age and their far more potent weapons and technology. The Chiss may have even already have broken free of the True Sith Empire, considering their weapons and tactics, and may have been advancing technologically as a direct result of their rebellion. They may have even already taken some of the worlds that were in the future Ascendancy, or maybe some of those worlds would have been stages of conflict in the game.
Also, from a game mechanics perspective, if they had really intended the Exile to be the protagonist of the third game, they could have made some excuse for her power being drained whatever point she ends up crossing through the Great Hyperspace Disturbance at, or maybe she comes into contact with an artifact of some kind. It's even possible that the destruction of Malachor V at the end of TSL (light side) and the death of Darth Traya somehow disrupted her connection to the Force again, considering she was connected to both so greatly, though this explanation feels the weakest.

On the one hand DnD would mean that it was a traditional rpg and not a modern one and that is always better. Even though a few games have shown that the modern style gameplay, be it first or third person, can be ok, they're still inherently weaker. On the other hand the DnD system is one of the worst rpg systems out there and there is always the danger that the ridiculously bad fluff of DnD would inspire the game. I'd rather have a good plot instead of the DnD power-creep-as-story-and-killing-as-the-solution-for-everything. Got enough of the latter in all the Marvel yawn fests.

How to weaken the Exile at the start of the story? Very easy!
The unknown regions are filled with the dark side of the force to the point where anyone with a strong connection to the Light Side struggles to think clearly, their body weakening. Revan, who walked on both side of the force had it much easier to adapt + he separated himself from his companions so he would be free of the "chains" that sith code presents.
Exile being the wound in the Force would get a bigger dose of dark side energy that would weaken her. She would have to either adapt to the Dark Side and become more "evil" or through the quests bring some good to the citizens of that part of the galaxy, restoring some parts of the balance to the Force, becoming stronger through the light side.
We could get some more character development from the Exile to become more like Kreia, since Kreia's walk on the borders of light and dark had wisdom unforseen in Kotor 2.
There's a well of creativity when it comes to approach to the storytelling Chris mentioned in this video, sure from a development point of view a game like that could be just too massive to implement successfully but I'm charmed by the ideas presented here. Loved the video

      1) The Exile would never "follow Revan" for he never did follow Revan. He would've gone to war after any other senior Jedi, Revan or not; 2) Revan didn't trust the Exile and Malachor V destruction was not what Revan planned; 3) The Exile dies along with Kreia for by killing her he cuts himself from the Force once again and nobody can survive this twice. All the Kotor story is about being tricked. Like all Jedi do you listen but do not hear! "The Sith is a belief". Yet, you may go look for your some "true Sith" if you'd like to. 5:10 Since a lot of the Exiles power from her bonds, you could always write it as killing Kreia, with whom she shared a powerful bond and leaving her companions left her dramatically weakened. If that doesn't work for you could instead have her confronting some big bads that drain and imprison the Exile, starting the game with a fun escape sequence. Last but not least, if she were to permanently heal herself as a wound in the force, that might also work as a kind of reset button.

You actually don't need to have a starting weak character. You can import a character like Mass Effect 2 o 3 and, if you hadn't played 1 and 2, you can always start anyways in level 20 or whatever as a full Jedi Knight. That would be a change for once in a Jedi-focused Star Wars game.

I would totally love to see another character like Kreia, who would explain the philosophy of the true Sith and Challenge the beliefs of the Protagonist on each step of his journey.
Taking it a step further, it would have been nice to delve deeper into the cause-effect dependencies of the players actions, and to demonstrate that even the same actions may lead to different consequences:
    1) Saving a slave before his will is broken, who would be thankful and feel in dept
    2) Save another slave later (or another old one), and watch him become even more cruel version of his oppressor
    3) Also here we can also introduce the dilemma of killing "an innocent who would definitely become a mass murderer later on" - would it be an act or Light or Dark side?
    4) Can one kill someone in order to return the Balance of the force?
Also, it would be nice to explore more the mechanics of the Force bonds in a more interactive way, like:
    1) Sharing abilities. The more followers you have, the more "Unique abilities" and stats you will gain. Their strength will, however, depend on the quality of the relationship
    2) Sharing HP - Similar to when Kreia lost her hand, Mitra felt the same pain.
    3) Also, it would be interesting to see how people change under the influence of Force Bond. Maybe even see Revan reject it, and see the whole philosophical discussion about its effect.
After all Sith despise connections for seeing them as weakness, whereas Jedi, reject attachments. How does the "Force Bond" come into the picture here?
    4) Using Force Bond abilities to heal the Force Wounds or... become another Darth Nihilus?
Would it be possible to take a "Neutral route", rejecting the force altogether?

  • @kharneater778
    @kharneater778 3 роки тому +3

Well as for the diminished powers of the protagonist I think it'd be rather easy to explain. The force bond that was between the Exile and Kreia was severed so the prior access to the force that the Exile had built up was gone. Where before the Exile couldn't reach the force without Kreia the bond had reopened a connection to the force but the Exile would have to relearn how to control it. This would also explain the (all things considering in the games) rapid rise in power level as the Exile was familiar with the techniques just had to get reacquainted.

In terms of philosophy, I think that the True sith would have worshiped ”death” over ”power” as a concept.
Kreia, Nihilus, Sion and to an extent the Exile are the results of death on a different kind of scale.
By the time of KOTOR2 they harness death and hurt the Force just by existing. And it is said that they are either the results of Mandalore V or of the teachings of the Sith academy there (which is a vanguard of the True Sith).
That's why the True Sith are implied to be as dangerous as they are. They have no more values but that of death. Nihilism at its purest. (This would push the philosophical conendrum of Kreia from KOTOR2 even further and kinda give a ”moral” standing to the True Sith, they wouldn't even do what they do for powe, but to at last, free everyone from the torment of the Force and life)
Their power is primal, it transcends technic or ideology. It is death at it's purest.
Thus this would allow the Player to roleplay any kind of character, because even the most assholish of regular sith wouldn't want oblivion.
And (personal theory here) if you wanted to go further into the twist of what the True Sith are, you could say that they are the True Jedi, that for True Balance to be, there must be nothing, because life creates imbalance. (Thus give a whole new perspective on the original schism that made the Sith out of the Jedi)

I really hated what Swtor did to Revan and the entire narrative of the Kotor games and completely ignoring past loveable characters like Bastila. But no the writers of Swtor had the bright the idea of deconstructing and milking Revan's character and making his life as miscible and tragic as possible for shock value and money. I wanted a continuation of some of the story threads Sith Lords dropped. Preferably, where we play as Revan again with the Exile, T3, and HK47 finding him/her and helping them do whatever it is they're s doing as companions. Also I remember there was a conversation you could have with Canderous Ordo telling you about him encountering an organic ship that sounds suspiciously like the Yuuzon Vong....

@100% Star Wars There's a Legends comics series called Knight Errant set a few decades before the Darth Bane trilogy that's very similar to the plot of KOTOR III: a lone Jedi travels through Sith Space, learning about all these different Sith Lords via how they rule their territory. I wonder if the author (John Jackson Miller) knew someone on the KOTOR 2/3 team and drew his ideas from the pitch from KOTOR III.

There's some imaginative ideas there: there's a Lord who thinks he created the universe as a test for himself, his brother who is basically a Warhammer character, a pair of twins who mentally enthrall a planet...it's kind of crazy.

The problem is that there is no way that it would meet everyone's expectations. Think back to Halo 2 and how that turned out (or even KotOR 2 when it first came out, as it was derided by literally everyone as being inferior to the first game due to Development Hell). If it played the same as the other games, it would be derided as being archaic and not innovating. If it changed everything, it would be derided for not being like the older games. That's not even getting into the story and how it would undoubtedly change from what Obsidian originally planned (especially if they aren't the ones making it and it goes to an EA studio).

Be able to choose either Jedi or Bane himself at the start. Who you choose is whose viewpoint you'll experience it from, however neither have the same start point. Like if you picked Jedi, then you'd start on Coruscant, and if you picked Bane, then you'd start on Korriban.

My question though is what is the timeline for this empire coming into existence? Did they just leave Korriban and Ziost behind? Was Korriban just a psychop? Or a more freaky idea, what if this True Sith Empire is older than the classical old Sith Empire, older than the Hundred-Years of Darkness?

Admittedly, this could be a distant impossibility, but for a long time now I've thought that a Star Wars game developed by the same team that made Sekiro: Shadow's Die Twice would be an incredible thing to play. I mean, picture the intensity of the lightsaber duels with the high speed, dexterity based combat of Sekiro for its swordplay mechanics, they would definitely have to rework it a bit in order to properly integrate Force Powers and handle blast deflection but I think it would be reasonably feasible and undoubtedly incredible to experience. I don't know if it would work for a potential KOTOR III, as the companions you fight beside and direct would be remarkably difficult to keep track of in such an involved and intense combat system, but perhaps for another title, it would work well.

Maybe more than one player character available to play, something like Halo 3 that you play with Master Chief and The Arbiter. You could play some parts of the game as The Exile and others as Revan and maybe a third Jedi/Sith that follows their footsteps in the beginning of the game. Well, one may always dream, right?

Theory about the true Sith empire being an offshoot of Marka Ragnos does actually make sense. And also Revan and Exar Kun before him being only followers of true Sith teachings from which they learn secret powers of the dark side of the force is also very valid. This is so exciting to think about and I hope one day we will see something that will put a final conclusion to one of the best game trilogy, expected for almost 20 years.

To be honest I would have loved KOTOR 3, and there are so many times I wished TOR had been made into a single player game (KOTOR 3) instead of an MMO. Because TOR felt very user friendly, I mean there's a few points it gets emotional, but none of them hit too hard because its an MMO, can't scare off subscribers. Then it was rushed out due to EA, and the story after the main chapters were cut and became rather cookie-cutter.

Man, really for anyone who needs an idea of what kind of potential story we missed out on with KOTOR 3, go beat part 2, preferably as a neutral character who maintains a good relationship with Kreia through the whole game.
The way she brings up Revan and the unknown region is something so special to experience. It felt to me like she was saying "you've pushed beyond the rest of us, all the rest of the galaxy can't hope to stand a chance against your power. Aside from you, only Revan ever stood with such might. Go now and join him at the end of all things to face the greatest threat to life that ever existed"
It felt absolutely epic and mysterious and full of intrigue and wonder. I remember my first time completing it, I honestly thought it was gonna be like planet devouring space monsters (maybe something like the reapers from mass effect, back before mass effect existed lol)

I think if KOTOR 3 followed the book, the player could be Scourge *but* they’d also get to play as the Exile and Revan throughout the game as well. Instead of the dark/light mechanic happening within the character, your ending is who you side most with (Scourge - dark, Meetra - light, Revan - grey).

I also read somewhere that the Exile was going to be the protagonist of KOTOR 3, so I also wondered how the devs were going to justify the nerfing. Turns out that watching this video made me consider the most obvious of choices. The Exile (instinctively) chose to cut themselves off from the Force at Malachor V. For KOTOR 3 they would do it on purpose so they could slip into the True Sith undetected.
