I love what Wairish said. Its so true. "You cannot be in another person's country and refuse to learn how things work". I say that all the time.

Lesson #1 - when coming abroad, your landing pad is very important. Toxic hosts are not interested in YOUR progress and will try to shut you down.

My then brother in law advised me to take a job as a security guard because that was all he knew. I refused because I wanted to become a nurse. 16 years later.. today I am a Registered Mental Health Nurse , with a MSc and a Ward Manager. All because I refused to listen to him and remained focused on my goals.

This caller nailed it. We oppress ourselves at home and we don't help people climb the ladder in the diaspora. However the 1% that help some climb the ladder, the person that help them may regret it because they sometimes bite that finger eventually. It's a vicious cycle among us immigrants. The Asians don't do that though.

In Canada we in the Caribbean community have several community organizations through which information is disseminated to assist people with employment opportunities, schooling, scholarships, etc.

I'm learning so much about the Nigerian and Ghana people of the Diaspora. I didn't know, there were these difficult issues facing them. I'm a London born Carribbean.

One of the things that really annoys me about the community is how people are quick to depend on others instead of doing the work themselves. This what people use to call Africans stupid.

That is a good advice ( keyword : " Barbershop " ) and I thought , only women confide in their hairdressers.....but it is true , you learn a lot in those places, if you are receptive and open.

That Wairish Wairish girl is spot on she trusted and relied on herself instead of listening to her parents

One speaker just nailed it. Some people will not believe in you, will tell you to stay where you are, if you want to pull them up they will refuse because it's hard work.

I feel you Mazi, they definitely should cancel the cane! I have similar experience in Nigeria. All the callers have contributed really great points! The issue I find with most of our people in the diaspora especially among the older generation, we are mentally lazy! We don't want to learn and educate ourselves. It's not necessarily going back to school but branding our horizon, mixing with other people, travelling to other countries (if you are able to) etc.

Lesson #2 - who are you making friends with? Do your research, get proper legal advice. Educate yourself and break out of the "triangular lifestyle" of work, church/mosque, & home. E.g Look at groups at school and make friends with others. Look for free business engagement/meet ups and attend those, learn and grow, stretch out.

You dropped so many priceless gems in this video. Things that I learned the hard way through a lot of blood sweat and tears. I wish I had a person like you around me when I was growing up. It would have saved me a lot of unnecessary suffering.

Yes, Sergio from Germany is very correct Phrankleen! They will segregate and block you. I am not Nigerian but I have witnessed it first hand in their church. It's so sad.
