    Depending on stage of life, that is really the key, and if you stay with parents, any other liabilities, what you deemed is necessary to you personally, to qualify as comfortable. The latter determines how much you need, even for peers at the same stage of life.

    CPF does take up quite abit if your basic salary not high. So people need to take this as consideration when asking for starting salary. Earn 5k mean your cash on hand is only 4K.

    • @FlamingWind
      @FlamingWind 7 місяців тому +7

      @@LangLang5689 I believe if you choose to rent somewhere cheaper, you could probably save another $1-2K. This is your choice to stay somewhere that is more upmarket. There are cheaper condos to rent elsewhere.
      Also, am not too sure what kind of entertainment and clothes that cost $2k every month which I believe you can reduce this down to $1-1.5K.
      There you go, you probably have extra cashflow of few thousands more every month.
      Even if you don’t adjust your lifestyle, having $3K of savings every month in Singapore is quite decent. That is if you use a larger portion of this money to invest in ETFs.

      they say comfortable though, so its quite vague cause different people needs different standards to feel comfortable. If you grew up in landed property, eating restaurants everyday and going europe once or twice a year, you are not going to be comfortable with $5k. But if someone who grew up in a 1 room flat, eating rice sauce everyday, then $5k would be insanely comfortable

    Same in HK, if you are single and need to rent an apartment, then around HK$30k to HK$40k (which is about SG$6K to SG$8k) will be comfortable (MPF deduction is HK$1,200/ month or 5% of salary). Can go on yearly holiday but cannot buy luxury brands every month if you want to have some money to save up. If salary is above HK$40k, then you can have a bit of luxury including holiday and more savings.

    Depends on life stage. If you are just starting out like first job out of school, 3-4K is fine. When u are in your mid 20s, u should be hitting 5-6, and 7-8 in your late 20s. Above 30s, u need to be getting at least above 8. And that’s just comfortable for one person. If u in tend to get married but house have kids, u need to be above 10k (each).
    Now these figures are to be comfortable, meaning, house, car, kids, travels, and still have savings for self and retirement. I don’t recommend moving on with the life stages if you just have the bare min.

You can't think in terms of "depending on current life stage", because the future is going to come whether you like it or not; the same responsibilities are going to enter your life. So a comfortable salary should already account for the amount you want to set aside for savings and investments so that these money have the time horizon to grow and multiply by the time you need them for e.g. wedding, house.
