Wave place failed on our 2009 Acadia I while we were on the way to Florida. 11 PM going through Atlanta. Hit the throttle, downshifted watched the tach shoot up and the truck didn't move. Let it upshift and took it easy and made it to Naples. Got it to a GM dealer and ended up with a complete trans rebuild as part of the waveplate recall. Lucked out on that one!Chris, you do a great job on these videos!
My '09 Traverse broke down with my son driving it while 200 miles away from home. Did some research and found the symptoms that he describes sounds like a 3 5 R waveplate issue which GM knows about and has extended the warranty for. Had it towed to a nearby dealer. Now I can talk with some knowledge long distance to the service department about what we're looking at. Thank you, Chris!!! Great video and job!!
Thank you so much for this video! Thanks to you, I was able to complete this work myself on my Saturn Vue 2008 (which also has a 6T70). My 3-5-r waveplate was in 3 pieces and my 2-6 clutch cushion spring was cracked in half. Replaced the other two waveplates just to be safe. There was some collateral drum damage as well as damage to the sun gear (both replaced as well). I did this work without pulling the transmission (just separating engine cradle from the body and jacking the body up separately). I had to pull the battery and fuses, but not much else. I'm fairly confident I succeeded in getting it all back together correctly. However, when I went to start the car, there is no crank and the key is stuck in the ignition (won't go to lock position). Headlights, break lights, and horn don't work, but interior lights, dash lights, and radio work. I know all fuses and relays are good and getting power from the battery (also good). Car rolls in neutral but not in park. Any idea what might be wrong? Seems electrical to me (not passing one of the prerequisites before sending power to the starter). Did you have to have to have the TCM flashed or reset anything before your Enclave would start?
I didn't, but I will say, if the wave plate was broken, it is a bit risky not separating the transmistion to replace the oil filter... those pieces can get into a lot of places, including the valve body/solenoids. Sorry I can't give you more suggestions.
@@SlideruleRacingProducts Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Helps avoid unnecessary troubleshooting. I agree with you. I may regret not changing the filter. However, it seems like the least of my worries right now :-)
Chris Bruno i have a 2011 malibu, apparently also notorious for transmission issues. After watching your video ive decided to take my transmission issue head on. I have reason to believe that my wave plate is completely busted as the car does not go into reverse , and when put in drive, will only move a little bit before throwing multiple codes and basically putting itself in a "neutral" type state where you can rev the motor but no power is transfered to the wheels. There are unfortunately no videos relating to my vehicle however. Do you believe this could be my issue? If so, what should i look out for? thanks
Hi Nick, I won't claim to be a transmission expert, but if your wave plate is busted, then you'll need to completely break down the transmission to clean out all of the oil paths. You might start by draining the oil and looking for debris.. if there is debris, then you have a complete breakdown and rebuild ahead of you, no matter what the root cause was. In which case, you should be prepared for a lot more work than most videos on you tube.. If you're up for it, though, it's a good opportunity to make your own video! Good luck!
wow, I'm an avid do it yourselfer and must say that this video is very excellent. I have the same but a 2009 and thank god I haven't had the infamous problem of the transmission. I will keep this video for future reference.
Last tip I have if your ever rebuilding the valve body the gaskets usually are caked on so try a pan over the stove and heat water up in there let the metal spacers soak in it and it should peel off and you can use a window scraper blade to remove gently if all else fails on those metal plates to remove the gaskets use a 3m blue sanding disk on your die grinder. But not on the aluminum valve body parts. And brake clean everything. Must be clean clean
Great Video Sir, I know to most people this type of job is intimidating. But, It really isn’t too bad of a job. We work on vehicles everyday, But someone with average skills can pull off this job, Especially after watching a video like this... 👏👏👏👍💯
i am a gm transmission tech of 25 years and have built hundreds of these since 07 because of the 3-5 reverse wave plate failure everyone needs to know that if you have a plate failure this way is not the way to go , when the plate breaks it usually destroys the drum assembly and puts all the metal in the filter stopping it up starving the fluid pump, all that metal needs to be cleaned out , new filter and gaskets replaced and the case and valve body torn down and cleaned to do a proper jod
+joez701 Worried about losing business JoeZ? If you watch Part 1 and read the comments you'll see that I agree with that. In my case, the waveplate wasn't broken.. As I explained in the other video, this was a preventative step since I already had the engine out. Oh.. thanks for the dislike.
+Chris Bruno ,i did not mean to dislike dont know how that happened, and no i could care less about the business ive warranted more for free than most trans guys have worked on , i was not trying to come against u i just was telling people that if it breaks that all the metal piles up in the filter, ive seen people try to just replace the plate after a break and the pump screams and it stops pulling , sorry u took it wrong
Joez701, question for you. It appears the 6T75 is unchanged from 2007-2009, then they fixed the waveplate issue and they were the same from 2010-2016...does this sound correct? I am hoping to get a 2014-2015 trans, swap the TCM and solenoids on it with the one off my 2008, and install it in my 2008 to resolve my failing 3-5-R issue. I can't find definitive info regarding if I might have any other issues with this swap.
With the help of your videos I was able to get in the tranny. I found the following. A crack in 3 5 r wave plate. A slight crack in the 2 6 wave plate. A slightly worn drum when the 3 5r plate goes. I ordered all new parts. My question is , the 1234 plate don’t seem cracked. I ran my finger along it, but didn’t pull it. It seems ok, but should I change it anyways. ? Thank you for all your help
As I recall, those parts are cheap.. I bought a kit with all of the wave plates and a big pile of stuff I didn't need (because I wasn't splitting the case) for about $120. Tearing back into the transmission again is going to be a major PITA. So, my attitude is always to replace cheap parts while they're easy to get to..
Never use grease in an automatic transmission only use vasoline on O-rings etc internally. Another tip make sure the thrust bearings are put in the right way. Just rebuilt a 6T75 Acadia trans had 2-6 wave spring broke and low/reverse wave plate broken also while I had the trans apart I updated the 3-5-R wave plate. Also reused those rubber edges gaskets and used a skim of Permatex 518 on the aluminum edge to ad a second seal basically. Another tip after those repairs are done vehicle must go to a gmc certified dealership to perform the learn adapt procedure on TEHCM.
Good video though I was questioning my reaction sun gear that holds the 2-6 clutch pack assembly as my friction plates would snug up against the splines about 1/2 the way up but it wasn’t broken or spread Or damaged either. Anyways good video thx !
When you took out the 35R pack you mention a thrust washer falling, was this the washer all the way in the back? Is it possible to take out the 35R wave plate clutch pack without taking everything else out? Meaning, when you take the pack out is it very likely that the thrust washers will fall out behind the other parts requiring you to take it all completely apart? If you have to take everything out, would you be able to put the entire assembly together on the 35R housing shaft and put it all in at once to avoid worrying about the thrust bearings falling out? Any help is greatly appreciated!
If I was doing this again, I would only remove the first pack that had the 3-5-R wave spring in it and I think you would not normally have to worry about the thrust washer moving in that case. Good luck!
I ended up replacing all four wave plates with the transmission in the car a couple weeks ago. When I removed the 35r shaft I looked down in the transmission and saw that the farthest thrust bearing had fallen half way down and was blocking the shaft. So I ended up taking everything out in order to reposition the bearing. You are correct about the last wave plate being difficult to replace! Getting all of the gear sets back in place with all of the bearings and plates that need to be aligned was a major pain especially when working on the ground through the wheel well! Thank you for your video, without it I don’t think I would have tried to complete this on my own!
I think if one pulled the trans, separated from engine and set it vertically and let gravity hold that last deep bearing still, you'd have better luck? You would be looking down on all of the parts istead of sideways. I might try this idea this weekend as I am doing a used motor swap anyways. @@brandonseibert389
@@poingrout Doing this vertically would definitely make some things a lot easier, but getting the transmission in that orientation adds a LOT of work to the procedure. Especially if you're one of the folks trying to do this without taking the engine out of the car.

In a different video I explain that I pulled the engine out to change the timing chains. I wasn't having a trans code when I did this - it was preventative maintenance. But since the whole engine was out, it seemed foolish not to change the problematic wave plate while I had such good access..
Mine 09 malibu LTZ 3.6 is at the dealership right now getting 3/5/R recall done at 91k miles. The car has never been beat on since the day I drove it off the lot. Failure symptoms were slipping going into 3/5th gear and hard downshifts. In reverse, the transmission would shutter and jolt with grinding noise. Check engine light never came on, never threw a code. For those experiencing this issue, GM extended the warranty to 10years or 120k miles from the day it was driven off the car lot regardless of original owner or not.
ozerimar1 fluffy1.... The first dealership I took it to wanted $800 up front to look at it which would have been reimbursed if it were indeed part of the recall which left me feeling like i was going to be taken for my $800 + remaining repair costs. They did not require me to put any money up front, I was given a 2018 Equinox as a loaner and had my car back in 3 days. Only expense I had was refueling the loaner vehicle.
Also, yes it was still driveable but rpms would sky rocket when entering 3/5th gear...even while slowly accelerating. Sometimes reverse would engage but would grind and shutter. ozerimar1 fluffy1.... unfortunately dealerships are known to jam the customers with shotty work and over priced services. If you are not sure if your 3/5 R plate is going then I suggest putting it in 3rd gear in manual tap shift and get on the gas a little harder than a normal stop and go. If your rpms sky rocket try the same in 5th gear. Easy way to see if the trans is slipping in 3/5

During diagnosis of various transmission symptoms and diagnostic codes, technicians may see DTCs P0842, P0843, P0872, P0873, P0877, P0878, P0989 or P0990 indicating an issue with transmission fluid pressure (TFP) switches.
During normal use, the TFP switches may stick from time to time causing a code to set. This is to be considered normal as switch outputs are only used for shift adaptives and do not cause transmission symptoms unless the switch is failed for a long period of time.
To determine if the TFP switch is functioning correctly, clear the code and perform the following check.
Important: The Tech 2® must contain version 27.007 or later.
Sorry if I missed it in your vid, but how long did this job take?
Pulling the engine was the big job. Once the engine was out, just the wave spring change was probably less than an hour.
Nice work. It's gotta feel good to save $3000.
Uf-da. I would need a anti-anxiety pill. Kudos.
A gym teacher. That's good. I'm assuming that you didn't understand what I was saying based on your spanish comment, but you would have heard me say that if anything is actually broken, you need to disassemble the entire transmission. This was PREVENTATIVE maintenance to address the problem before it started. Tell you what - you make some videos and show me how its done. ;-)
