The making of the military highest award, the Medal of Honor

- The Medal of Honor is made by full-time engravers in the Veteran Medals Unit. With diamond-tipped precision, the craftsmen chisel names synonymous with honor, grit, and daring onto symbols of sacrifice, the medals that adorn the chests of the courageous. CBS News’ Mark Albert reports.
My grandfather stormed Normandy Beach (Omaha). He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with a V. I’ve never been able to find them but I need to get replacement medals. Wonderful to see how they are made.
If you go to the VA website there is a link for your grandfather or next of kin to request them. I did this for my grandpa they sent us every medal and ribbon and attachments everything he earned except for overseas bars and service stripes
The V stands for Valor by the way
@@jjdabomb87 thank you for this!! His metals have been lost. I will do this!
@@ConsoleModZone I know.
You’re telling me while someone was receiving a medal of honour you were thinking, ‘I wonder who made that?’
Everyone named Bob kneel
Joshua McHugh It’s about the honor it takes to make it. Or is that too hard to understand?
@@Mark-yb1sp hes just curious about why he wasn't the center of attention and how he earned it. It was literally just 5 seconds saying that someone got it. Not why or how. Also they never mentioned his name. Or is this too hard to understand for you?
@@Mark-yb1sp honor it takes to make it ?
@@susandefelice5509 there were most likely many videos about this video already, you could find some for yourselves. Not many people no how it’s made and that’s what they used as a Segway to make it
The most exclusive club in the world, and the costliest to join.
May the lord bless the warriors; they have paid the price for our admission to the show.
@Din Djarin You usually DIE to get this medal chief.
@Din Djarin Oh yes, let's measure dicks about which country's medal is better and who should be the most exclusive instead of recognising all the brave men.
@Din Djarin How is becoming an astronaut hard? How is joining the Navy SEALs exclusive? How is becoming a nuclear physicist difficult. I swear you people ask the most idiotic questions. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.
Split Hoof The British / commonwealth Victoria cross is more difficult to attain than the Medal Of Honour, just saying. However, I’m not taking anything away from either and would like to point out that both are equally important. It really doesn’t matter.
Din Djarin Not really if you look into the benefits that you get for being a medal of honor recipient but I wouldn’t expect an ignorant fool to dive that deep
My grandfather was a Medal of Honor recipient. Sadly he died Memorial Day back in 01
This veteran salutes you and your grandfather. RIP sir.
Your lucky to have a man of that caliber in your family. Thank you for sharing
DarryGaming nobody care mate
At least he was saved the awful knowledge of what happened for the next 2 decades
What was his name?
Let each one of us have a SERIOUS moment of silence for everyone who UNFORTUNATELY DID NOT or WILL NOT make it home !!!! 😭😭😭😭
WTF? They didn't show anything about how the MoH was made.
It’s molded metal which is then engraved - they showed exactly how they do it 🤷♂️
@le Hoarderz Al-Shekelsteins then it wouldn't be as precise
jimJim - lol dumb comment
@@jimJim- well it depends on the engraver but a really good hand engraver takes time and is expensive. Yes they arent the exact same but you can get extremely close and it wld add to the value of the medal
@@fernandoguerrero5244 yes, yours is
Never a shortage of names. Remember what he said.
It's very good to know that the people that engrave these Medals take a great deal of pride in their work. Thank you, CBS for sharing this video. Video "Liked!"
As an Army/Air Force veteran . . . this post, made my day. To be awarded the Medal of Honor . . . how can one do, any better !
@jack bauer it happened, but the era is long gone.
They did'nt show the making of it, only the engraving.
"reporting" ... "journalism" ...
Dammit
It’s molded metal how difficult is it to imagine?
Google lost wax casting.
They carve the medal out of wax. Pack sand around it really tight. Melt out the wax. Pour in metal wait for it to cool.

The honor of honoring people who fought for it in saving lives . All the brave people in fighting for our rights and freedom.
#Salute. Worked with a few and interacted daily with them. Good men and knowing what they did/do, I have a newfound respect for them
There's no substitute for courage, heroism, bravery and valor especially on the battlefield! Having met several veterans from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, the 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars and the War in Afghanistan it is a true honor and privilege unlike any I've ever had before to personally thank the heroes whom have given so much so that we as Americans remain free!
Master craftsmen all. Thank you.
Can we focus on Groberg for a second! American Hero!
This medals are the symbols & the reason why American can object & raised questions. Victory comes with a price & the protectree will never know.
Medals should be worth millions.

SoCalFreelance yes what I thought
You know they get extra money each month and on their pension if they get medals right?
@@camper1749 Correct . . . Medal of Honor recipients receive alotments, for the rest of their lives ! 🇺🇸
Also a medal of honor recipients are automatically retired as well
2:58 lol. Right Now im third person who knows the combination
God bless these men who Honor our Military
Nothing to comfort a grieving family like a piece of ribbon amd scrap medal
a folded flag on top. :(
It is a shame that there is not a Medal of Honor memorial in Washington DC similar to the Vietnam Wall and the WWII memorial. There should be one place where people can go to read up on the valor displayed by the people awarded this medal. Now they are pushing a Desert Storm memorial site on the mall but that is not nearly as important as the accumulation of Medal of Honor winners not memorialized somewhere in our capital.
Thank you for your service to our country
Medal of honor should cost a small fortune and be made of precious medals and diamonds. It's the least we can do for our troops that earn that award.
It's the symbolism behind them that makes them worth something, not the metal that they are made of.
It would be interesting to know where the metal for the MOH comes from - is it a special metal, like the Victoria Cross which comes from old cannon (captured during the Crimea War).
It’s made out of isis bones tissue
God bless the honor of honoring .
I’ve got kind of n odd question if someone comes across this….the UK equivalent medal the Victoria Cross is supposedly made from the bronze from Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War. Is the Medal of Honor made from anything similar? Say for example metal from captured British cannons during the Revolutionary War, or cannons from the Civil War, something of historical significance.
From what I can tell that guy just engraved them. When I was a kid I worked at a trophy shop and ran the same machine.
Thank goodness Vanguard doesn't make these medals. They'd have misspelled names and the medals would probably get detached.
I wonder if you have to pay to have medals engraved now, not the MOH. Engraved (named) medals were most common in World War Two after that it was rarely done
0:01 lmao I saw this guy in a Netflix series called “Medal of Honor”
They should get medals.
Well that line of purple is shrinking
2:58 Haha, now the cameraman knows the combo!

Why is it not made by hand ? Look at the Victor cross
They engrave our nation's hardest earned medals on my wife's Cricut machine?
I mean at least it will look good
3:11 Jesse Jackson got a part time gig.
I kind of wish I hadn't clicked on this video. I was expecting to see some sacred process of creating the nation's highest medal and instead what I got was some government employees sitting in what looks like a back room at the DMV using an automatic engraving machine that I bet I can get on Amazon.
Valor awards should ONLY be engraved by hand like they were in times past. Machine engraving, especially on MOH is despicable.
That's unrealistic can you imagine the amount of Purple Hearts there are each day
The British Armies Highest award is the VC (Victorian Cross) It's made from the metal of a captured Russian Cannon. In the Crimean War 1853-1856 Only a handful of Medals have been awarded since the second world war. It's stored in one of the oldest Jewelleries in London and is Hand Crafted. There has only been 2 awarded in recent times. Before that in the 80's one was awarded posthumously in Falklands to Lt Col. Jones. (It's is also Awarded to the Ozzies and Kiwi's as there highest awarded a few have also been give to these countries.
Justa Guy valor awards should not be given by the draft dodger in chief
bigjohn697791 Sounds very European. Unfortunately in America everything is mass produced and quailty is poorer. Including the purple hearts
I am sorry to hear that John. I would have though they could have spent a few quid, on a medal for these lads seen as they risked there necks for there country. It's not like American is a bit skint for cash. or that lots of these are given out
In 1972 the M.O.H. also included a $100.00 monthly payment for life. Has that amt. gone up? \\//,
+Carl Terreros yea its now around 1000 a month
Carl Terreros
It is now $1259.00 a month.
It is now over 1,000 for pension plus 10% raise of their retirement pay assuming 20 years service.
Unfortunately approximately 50% of the recipients of the award receive it posthumously. To receive the greatest commendation often includes paying the ultimate price.
Wouldn't mean any thing if every other joe got one. Tackling a suicide bomber!? I mean that's legitimate. That's knowing you're ready to die for others.
marvelous!
Gainesville TX!!!!!
Rubbish news report. All they did was show how medals are engraved, they showed nothing of how the actual medal is made or how the ribbons are made. When someone says 'How it is made' that is what people are expecting to see. Thumbed downed.
Personal taste, I know. But I prefer the 1862 ribbon, but it should have had stars on it so it looks like "old glory".
My great uncle Charles George was in the korean war and he killed he was awarded the Medal Of Honor.
Medal Of Honor
purple heart
National Defense Medal
The national defense service medal is nothing special. Every soldier who graduates from basic training receives it. So it's nothing special
@@douglewis5701 Not quite true. Those with a less than honorable discharge do not receive it. You sure like the negative don't you.
Doug Lewis Your comment is incorrect. The National Defense Medal is awarded for serving during a time of war. I know this from experience when I joined the Army since right before the current War on Terror. Everyone who joined since 9/11 has been given the award because we are still at a state of war with the War on Terror.
I’m British, so I’ve got a question. Why don’t Americans solider’s wear medals on their chest and opt for those little weird badges instead. It’s just not the same as wearing medals 🎖. Just looks bad, and a little disrespectful to not wear the medals proudly on their chest.
+respect
The victoria cross is made from cannon captured at savastapol during the crimean war.
Dos anybody know what the medal of honour is made from

I'm more interested in how they made the ribbon.
I bet there are still cables
When you try to look busy you hold a medal in an engraving machine. Lol
Sam Jackson LOL! *The medal engraving unit have only 6 people working in it. They do a lot of medals each year.*
how did you know I was named "for display only"?
The maker needs a medal of honor
Purple Heart description.
Smart enough to think of a plan...
Dumb enough to try it...
...lucky enough to survive it...
Video title is misleading similar to the words of a recruiter.
Lmao what
Christ alive it's made the same way someone would get their bowling trophy etched xD How about a modicum of effort that makes at least a meagre attempt to reflect the sacrifice to obtain it?
Like what? Letting it soak in blood of infants as a symbol that their life started there? Or hand engraving it at the exact same spot they died? There's no real difference if it was engraved by a machine or by hand for the dead. The only thing they've got left are their familys and friends memories of who they were as a person. Money would never replace what they were or what they did so anything that makes it more valuable would be pointless.
Madman 21 What about those who received the Medal of Honor and are still alive?
Your name is absolutely appropriate to your comment smeghead 666
he is medal engraver ,not maker
*Marines, sailors and airmen can also rate medals* in addition to soldiers. Not all branches are the same.
If you don't get this, shut your mouth. You've clearly never served.
0:28
And to think, at one time they handed out the Medal of Honor just to get you to re-enlist.
"Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton promised a Medal of Honor to every man in the 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment who extended his enlistment. 311 accepted, but because there was no official list of their names, the War Department issued 864 - one for each man in the unit"
You don’t need to be in the military to serve your country.
Clorox Bleach True, yet still belittling to the people that served in the armed forces. It IS different.
Hey found you again clorox
That is the favorite line of every loser that can't make it in the military well guess what there's a reason why the military and veterans get all the federal holidays Memorial Day veterans day armed forces Day not to mention all the benefits because the American people in the federal government know who the real heroes are!!!!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Oh my God....what is that?

J delta737 because it's showing how far back it goes that the man has been making the medals, do you pay attention?
True that they did not mention either Bush, but it wasnt about the Presidents
Seriously they were talking about his time in, the administration he started under and the current.
Remember when news was wholesome. And not political. Wow.

How to make a medal, buy $10,000 dremel, done.
You forgot the knowledge of the cnc-software and machining principles but okay lmao
It is not a Military honour at all. IT IS A CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOUR!
khankrum1 military history lesson. The Medal of Honor is presented IN THE NAME OF CONGRESS by the sitting POTUS. The determination is actually made by the Department of the branch where the service member served, Congress rubber stamps it and arrangements are made for presentation to the awardee or their family. A Medal of Honor is not earned, it is awarded, only skill badges and rank is earned.
It is actually the Medal of Honor, not the Congressional Medal of Honor.
@@TR-Mead really ? The Congressional Medal of Honour is bestowed by the President, who is Commander in Chief on BEHALF OF CONGRESS.
@@khankrum1 Yes, really. Educate yourself. I know and served with 3 MOH recipients from my time in the military so I'm much more familiar with it than you, especially since you can't spell "Honor" properly. Read this: www.google.com/amp/s/taskandpurpose.com/.amp/news/theres-no-such-thing-as-the-congressional-medal-of-honor
I wouldn't exactly be proud to get the PH, or the POW medal.
What happened to bronze star with Valour
Really you had to put that traitor in chief in this video? smh..........
It was disappointing that no process of the making of the medal was ever included and an actual skilled engraver may take pause at someone overseeing a computer operated machine being called an "engraver".
Since its creation in 1861, during the War Between the States (American Civil War), to date there have been 3,527 MoH awards -- with 40% being presented for actions in the 1861-1865 war.
The Victorian Cross has been awarded 1,358 times by the UK and Commonwealth, since its creation at the end of the Crimean War in 1856. Highest number of awards were in World War One. Fewer than a dozen of the VC have been awarded for actions since World War Two (e.g. Korea, Vietnam, Falklands, Afghanistan).

0:01 The one where Ross gets the MOH
I wonder if this is where Forest Gump's Medal of Honor was made?
COMMON GUYYZ ?????........FROM CHINA WITH LOVE
g d it!! IT DOESN'T SAY HOW THEY R MADE & WHAT THEY R MADE OF! I WOULD DECREE EVERY MEDAL BE STERLING, GOLD, GOLD/MIX STERLING & THE MOH BE PLATINUM! SO AS PRESIDENT I DECLARE ALL MEDALS CAN BE SENT TO AN DESIGNATED ASTRO PLATER FOR NO CHARGE (all cost paid by charity events through out the nation) & THE FEDS WILL PAY 4 THE 'REAL METAL 'MEDAL'
There is a reason why commendations and now even Officer ranks insignia are no longer allowed to be made in precious metals. To prevent their liquidation for their mineral value, particularly in cases of theft.
