Medal of Honor recipient recalls deadly ambush

- After several requests for help from his ambushed unit were denied, Dakota Meyer took matters into his own hands, to try and save his trapped comrades in Afghanistan. His efforts earned him the Medal of Honor. David Martin reports.
An hour and 45 minutes is a lifetime in a firefight
being as sober as they are....Yes, I don't think any general, whoever, would ever forget that.
One of the things video games doesn't show you
These were human lives at risk I'm starting to think they did it of their own free will
Ten seconds is a lifetime when being shot at. It slows down at the same time to afford you to take advantage of any cover you can find. I once grabbed a buddy and dove down a flight of steel stairs to a concrete landing. There is no heroism in that act because one I was a medic just outside of Washington, D.C. In a civilian fire fighter medic position. Before I entered the military. I have the upmost respect to this man who laid it all on the line to try to save some brothers. He is the epitome of heroism. They all seem to think they are not quite deserving of this honor, but this honor was created for exactly the type of action that this man took. I do understand to an extent his "understanding" of who he believes are the real heroes, as those who fought to their last breath trying to defend one another, and our commitments to free a people who are being enslaved , abused, raped, robbed, by their own government. But you must realize, that your actions are no less noble than those unfortunate heroes who fell. You are a true heroe, and luckily our American brothers also have this ingrained within them, should they be pushed to the point to sacrifice themselves to save other Americans. There aren't many who would admit it today, but I believe the spirit of the American people is stronger than anyone can estimate. Given the right circumstances, Americans will always suprise our enemies with acts of heroism, self sacrifice, and "big nuts, all go, no quit" spirit that flows through our veins. Also we don't need to smoke copious amounts of crystal meth to do it. We are naturally committing to a mission that we know nothing about until we are on site, and volunteer to go , without knowing anything, because all we need to know is that it will save American lives. We are a nation of heroes, but there are a few who take this to a whole new level. We are so fortunate to have this CMH recipient back home and in our country, and most importantly, still alive. Most CMH recipients are awarded posthumously. God Bless America, and may God bless you sir, and I hope you live a very long time and can show the next generation what it takes to truly be an American. I'm humbled by your resolve.
According to the book they were using JSOC and a Army and Air force commanders kept calling off fire missions and wanted more information

***** No, I'm well aware of what "AK" refers to, but I'm willing to bet that this moron couldn't tell the difference between the two and he thinks of them as the same.
AK-47 is a russian made assault rifle which is particularly effective when fired in short bursts, normally chambered in 7.62mm cartridges which was thewarsaw pact standard. AR-15's can be chambered in multiple calibres and in the US are generally only legal if confined to semi-auto. I spent 5 years teaching marksmanship firing SA-80's on MOD ranges in the UK. The fact that terrorists use an AK-47 or derivative isn't the issue, the fact that Muricans think it's cool or necessary to own enough firepower to kill anything smaller than an entaged rhinoceros is.
Tom Withey Oh you're in London, huh? Fuck off! As my point was made, you think of AK's and AR's as evil assault rifles that we should not be "allowed" to own. I'm so glad I don't live in the UK!
Your military spends $600 billion a year. They have laser-guided bombs, 10 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, 1,000 60+ ton MBT's (with armour that can stop anything less than an MOAB)over 2,000 deployed nuclear warheads, an air force and Marine Air Wing the size and capability only other combined NATO nations can muster and you think an AR-15's gonna be even a speedbump for a tyrannical government? He relives every second. A true warrior. God bless them all
“Try ur best” yeah easy to say while ur sitting in an air conditioned office. Why don’t we switch places and you ask me this question
exactly, which is why I hate officers in command on the radio. Most are office cowards.
If it was near a village then it was near a village. No kids life is worth a mercenarys life.
@@BaronNate stolen VALOUR. You're claiming on your channel you have a medal of honour too lol. Doubtful.
Heartbreaking response..
@@ophiolatreia93 and that is why you would be a terrible officer
The negligent officers not only got multiple soldiers killed, they ruined multiple lives and scarred and guilt-ed them for their whole life. They should be in prison for life.
They were reinstated apparently
Dakota has named the officers on a podcast and made it known that he would love to meet them alone someday, the podcast he did with jocks willink was the best
@@okdirt208 the silence during that podcast is insane. When he finishes a line and jocko just sighs... you can just feel his pain.
Hm...Officers...
God! Help us
Thank you Dakota and all other service personnel that served and are serving our country.those that didn't make it back home will never be forgotten.🇺🇲
THAT'S WHAT A HERO LOOKS LIKE
What a brave man .. respect from india... we cant thank soldiers enough for what they do
Thank you. Much respect to India.
why do we deny our own men support they need.......we should give them ANYTHING they need
Welcome to US army lol
its complete bullshit
From everything I have read about it the reason the officers didn't give them the artillery support is because the enemy was dangerously close to innocent civilian homes and they didn't want to risk collateral damage to innocent civilians. Do I think it was the right call? No. I would have sent in more artillery strikes. I use to be a 13B artillery crew member. But what happened was the person in charge of making the decisions thought if they would have hit a house with innocents in there then they would have faced tons of international scrutiny. It sucks cause it's a lose lose battle but I would have chosen American soldiers lives over the civilians.
The sad part is if they would have fired the rounds the next day the headlines would read.
"U.S. Military fired artillery on civilians."

All this time and we didn’t know the real story. Thank you for doing this. Dakota Meyer is A HERO! Thank you from a retired VET. MSgt USAF 1985-2005
Congratulations young man, u r truly a hero!! U make KENTUCKY proud!!
"It would have been extraordinary if i had been able to bring them out alive." As a fellow soldier, i almost shed tears hearing that.
Cap
someone needs attention
“We sleep peaceably in our beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.” So “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.
Well said...👍
Not really we’d still be just fine without them deployed
