It’s honestly just shameful that this woman thinks she can claim to have been injured and gotten cancer from a “heroic sacrifice” she never made, and still get away with it. Some people’s kids.
Stolen Valor is terrible but this is also incredibly fascinating. That a person is capable of just full on putting on an act like this is psychologically bizarre.

Someone in that community had to know that she never spent one day in the military! Beyond that, this woman has a family. I simply can't believe that no one was aware that she was pulling this despicable stunt.

@@choreomaniac Actually, she received a MSW degree and was employed by the VA, in Providence, as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She was working as a professional? That is how she was able to obtain a real Marine's DD214 information.
For those that aren’t aware. The paperwork she used and forged to legitimize her service were taken from various real veterans and active service members including DD-214s. Hence why she was charged with identity theft.

Not only did this woman commit stolen valor, she committed fraud for her own personal gain. She lied about having cancer, which in itself is a slap in the face of people who actually have cancer. She crafted a story and basically manufactured a military background so that she could reap the benefits. She definitely deserves a lengthy sentence for her actions.

Yeah…. my new roommate claims he served in the military. But he applied for a job and failed his background check. Apparently his high school has no record of him even graduating. He supposedly has a HS diploma though? Forged?? Now I don’t even know if he even served in the military…

My grandpa ACTUALLY got a Purple Heart from the Storm of Normandy... His story of that day is... heartbreaking and terrifying. It's a slap in the face to every soldier's sacrifice... Edit: a word
I had a grandpa who served in Vietnam as a nurse, (he quickly had to serve on the front lines after recruitment) and he was injured from a shot to the foot. He didn’t get a Purple Heart and didn’t want to bring it up as he called it a sissy wound. Overall he was a good guy and I hate that anyone would steal valor.
@@zaithehedgewolf4587 there isn't a definitive answer to that but the most terrifying war is arguably WW1. Vietnam was a tough war but it's exaggerated to say it was the bloodiest. It was more terrifying being a Vietcong than an American/Allied troop.

Yeah, that "for actions in Afghanistan" immediately stood out to me. A purple heart isn't awarded for actions, and no one that legitimately received a purple heart would ever phrase it like that.
That one got me as well. All it takes to get a purple heart is to get hurt in combat. It's something that happens to many soldiers who experience combat. You don't see people going around bragging about how great they were at there fast food job, because they burned themselves on the grill. There's no shame in getting a purple heart, but its not something to brag about, and hype up like it's some kind of achievement. My boyfriend was a veteran. He served in the US Marine Corps. He came home with PTSD. I knew him almost his entire life, since kindergarten. He completely changed when he got back. He took over a handful of different prescriptions daily. Some that caused him to become addicted to like Xanax, due to his PTSD. Less than a decade after completing his service, he was found dead in his bathtub. That in itself is a long story. I think he was murdered. But because of all the prescriptions in his system, he was labeled a drug addict. Screw anyone who pretends to have served for our country

I'm not particularly emotional about it. Mostly, I think it's pathetic. She should definitely be charged for the misuse of VA records, if that's accurate. My jaw just dropped when they said there is no record she even served in the Marines. I thought she lied about the medals, but she made up the whole thing? Omg she is nuts.
How so? A real, honorable veteran would never lie about his service or awards. A real, honorable veteran would never buy medals online and flaunt them as legit. If a person is busted for fake medals, you can guarantee she or he is also lying about ever serving.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about people with Purple Hearts, it’s that most of the time, they don’t volunteer that information quickly and openly. Because it is typically associated with one of the worst days of their lives. I spent a lot of time with my dad at the VFW, he was a navy vet, and the post commander and I liked talking to a lot of the guys there. The ones with Purple Hearts I usually found out about from others who would just mention the guys in the post who were wounded in action. Very few of the Purple Heart recipients ever wanted to talk about it. They weren’t so much “proud” of it, but haunted by it. Many come close to dying, and they don’t just run around yapping about that afterwards. It’s extremely traumatizing. The only time I EVER saw most of the Purple Hearts talk about it, it was during very emotional speeches during military holiday functions the VFW put on for them and the public.
In the lead in to the story, I just sat shaking my head. Memorial day is not about honoring those who served, or those who received medals for heroism. It's about remembering and honoring those who gave their life in the service of their nation. Veteran's Day is set aside to honor living veterans.
Amen! Every day! I’m glad someone picked up on that. I could see running this story if the fake was deceased and the public just found out she was a fony. She deserves prison for life, or should have to fork over a good chunk every month to veterans charities for the rest of her life.
Story aside, this reporting is absolute tabloid-level garbage. Both of my grandparents received purple hearts in WWII. One fought in the Aleutian Islands and the other in Okinawa. They were only in their teens and went through literal hell. This is disgusting.
My grandfather fought in Okinawa. He said the people there were wonderful and interesting. When the worst terrorist attack in history happened my grandmother had no idea where in Japan my grandfather was and didn't know if he survived. My poor young mom was worried sick too. It took many weeks before they found out he survived. The pain they must have suffered worrying must have been terrible. I know how it feels to wait 8 days and that was torture enough. My heart goes out to everyone who suffered in war. On all sides. We must find more civilized solutions. No one should be a pawn.

All the pain our vets went through- mentally and physically; on top of any permanent disabilities that occurred from their service. All their hard work and dedication. Putting their lives on the line for our country... I would be angry if someone pretended to be a veteran

@@circesoul2218 Boot camp would've certainly been easier than the prison sentence she's going to get.
I think a lot of times it's a kind of sickness/illness--illusions of grandeur and fame and all that, they get so obsessed with it they start portraying it in real life and fool people into joining them in the fantasy. However when they start taking/making money out of it, that's just straight up fraud. Love how she drove off in a pricey lookin', fairly new Volvo...and allegedly paid off her mortgage like this.
It's America, everything can happen here-

Someone wants that veterans discount without earning that privilege, despicable.
What discount? You barely can find a place that offers any discounts to veterans.
She wasn't getting discounts. She was getting tens of thousands in compensation and currency
Dey give them discounts?
Her closest family knew what she was up to they had to know their daughter never served in the military so sad no one spoke up sooner!😢
Sometimes family isn't that close. It took my friend years, during her relationship to put the pieces together that her boyfriend had stolen valor. He didn't let my friend really interact with his family, she's a veteran, And he claimed to be but could never produce any documents. She couldn't find anything publicly informative for her. I think a very sick person has to impersonate.
Being a marine myself , her claiming to be a staff sergeant is ridiculous not that it’s not possible , but her salute is sloppy and the anchors on her dress blue collar should be pointed inward not outward
Oorah real Marine! Me too. That's also the first thing I noticed. A SSgt with outboard anchors? Come on. Lazy POS doesn't even do the homework. Thanks for your service.
If you look at that pic of her in her dress blue alphas, she is wearing the men's cover and not the cover for W.M.'s
I was going to say, the salute for a Marine is a dead give away, it was trash.
No she was claiming to be a Corperal which is even worse considering she is wearing a SSgt patch
First thing I noticed too. We used to call it, "dragging anchors."
I’m not a veteran but my dad was and really suffered as a result of his service in Vietnam and died an early death. Very upsetting that someone would steal the valor of those who served our country and especially that she claimed a Purple Heart. Really upsetting to see this.
Especially irsq, Afghanistan and Vietnam as it helped nobody and just cost lives and countries solely so to America.
Vietnam had a draft but to sign up for that you would have to be naive an idiot or a sicko
My dad is a veteran. He has PTSD from his experience. Even though I wasn't born when he was a part of the Marines, I still respect the sacrifices he most likely made. The fact that this woman is faking being a veteran is sickening
As a Marine veteran who did two tours in Iraq, this is disgusting what she did and I hope she spends years in prison for her disgraceful actions. I do know that the military is not for everyone and that you may not have been able to serve for a variety of reasons, but if you still can serve your country in many other ways like volunteering at the VA, sending care packages to deployed service members, help rase funds for the USO, etc. You can serve your country in many ways but pretending to be something you're not is disgraceful and stealing money from the veteran's is criminal and I would be fine with her being held accountable as any other Marine would be, since she wants to be one. Semper Fi
I'm not actually even sure she wanted to be one. Purely in it for the scam. She got hundreds of thousands.
She got federally investigated and is going to be found guilty. She will be a felon now.

So sad ! After X-rays and MRI for a total knee replacement they found what appears to be shrapnel in my leg . Didn’t know it was there and I don’t need that acknowledgment. Survived two tours in Vietnam 66-68 that’s enough for me .

I'm not particularly emotional about it. Mostly, I think it's pathetic. She should definitely be charged for the misuse of VA records, if that's accurate.
She stole over $284,000 in donations and was sentenced to 5 years 10 months in prison
In the lead in to the story, I just sat shaking my head. Memorial day is not about honoring those who served, or those who received medals for heroism. It's about remembering and honoring those who gave their life in the service of their nation. Veteran's Day is set aside to honor living veterans.
