i think he was honestly trying to be sympathetic, not smirking. It's all the way you interpret his facial expressions. He was trying to lighten the blows of his questions he knew were gonna be gut-punches to this soldier - if you think he's bad you oughta see the British interview some people, they really ask some obnoxious and mean questions of people trying to get a rise - sometimes it's almost astonishing how mean they can be.
It appears it was a high level decision influenced by the politics of keeping Karzai happy, so the person who must take ultimate responsibility is David Petraeus.
He just smiled a guy who went to Afghanistan and watched his friend die and said " in the end I guess it all came down to saving private mace" Epic Face palm
...because for those few, so far from anything remotely resembling home/ family/ America, Mace represented everybody's "kid brother" there... Usually, its the Privates with the least amount of military experience, the least amount of tactical savvy that "seasoned" troops try their hardest to protect. For anyone who's served in a 'grunt' squad/ platoon, even for a few months, this is a 'no-brainer'...
There were many remote combat outposts like that during the early mid and late 2000s. They stopped using that tactic and resorted to strategically placing patrols that went out further from larger FOBs. The low ground combat outposts worked wonders in remote areas in Afghanistan, because it's very hard to place them at the peak of a mountain, and even then, the closest engagements would be 1200+ meters across a valley, making them ineffective.
John Doe which supports my theory that is was a fake war for no good other than taxing people and causing a financial collaplse.. oh shit...im so scared of crapistan. idtiots. glad i lef tthe army before the fake war.

effectively place troops.. Seems like :INeffectively place troops. seems like we need a random place to drop young men so I can make good on my political promises. Afghanistan and North Vietnam remain to this day the only places on our planet that have never ben conquered. NOTHING WILL CHANGE THAT. why would we fight them on thier resourceless shitty land. other than to fullfil a bullshit political narative. get serious. we could have just dropped two bombs and that would be that. The day the US recieved an actual threat, is the day that 12 hours later the threat was gone and half a continent around. THE US IS THE BEST AND MOST BAD ASS. Aghganistan is beneath our awesomeness.

Words cannot express the sorrow you feel for such loss and the lost of your friends. Thank you for sharing your story, it is deeply moving and it is a good way to remember your friends. With respect and in remembrance of your fellow warriors.
I just finished reading "Red Platoon" It's definitely worth the read. It absolutely infuriates me that our men were forced into this situation. I understand that sometimes in war you have to do things that aren't easy or the ideal choice, but to put this outpost where they did is mind boggling. Based on what I read in the book, every single man sent their new that it was a horrible location, and they new it was a matter of time before the Taliban attacked in large scale and our guys would get their asses handed to them. That is exactly what happened. They even predicted how the Taliban attack would play out, and it is exactly what would happen. What a failure on the higher ups part to send these men there.
How else are you going to draw out enough target to aim our A10's, stealth bombers, artillery, and smart weapons? Fish aren't going to bite on a bare hook. The Taliban probably thought Allah had dropped a peach in their lap when they saw Combat Outpost Keating.
Nothing has changed since Vietnam. "Although the heavily fortified Hill 937 was of little strategic value, U.S. command ordered its capture by a frontal assault, only to abandon it soon thereafter." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hamburger_Hill

I have had the honor of meeting more than a few MOH recipients. They all share a trait - they are quietly humble and immensely proud of those they served with- My first recipient was Col Wesley Fox who was my CO for awhile. You didn't have to know his story to know that you were in the presence of greatness. I strive every single day leading my people now to be 20-50% as amazing as they are- I fail sometimes but I keep trying.
Why?it's not a bad thing to smile with with the guy maybe its to let him know hey man its okay you're not alone and I'm sorry you were there in that position to begin with..
I am absolutely not a tactician by any means, but the first thing I thought of when they showed that picture was, "damn they must've been getting rained on, with all those hills surrounding them." What a shame they got hung out to dry by some officer behind a desk somewhere.
You can clearly see the pain in his eyes... You are a hero Sir! Although you might not feel like it, but you are. I'm 100% sure that your friends (fallen fellows) were also very proud of you..

Here I am in 2020 I just finished watching The Outpost on Netflix. This was a sad story but a heroic one at that. Especially the soldier that ran with all the ammo. I think the trauma hit him the hardest but he never gave up during the fight after seeing so many people die. True warrior. I hope he’s doing better. He was the one that decided to go and get Mace after he was bleeding out for 45 minutes. Damn sad this happened. Who ever put them in that pit should be taken out of the Military because that position was the lowest of all low ground.

I wish I had half the courage these young guys had. I served and saw action, but remember wholeheartedly being scared out of my mind. I just figured I wasnt gonna be much help other than maybe catching a round that could take out one of the heros. Resigned to my fate of depriving the enemy of one more bullet, i did what I could, but have always looked at everyone else as the only reason I made it home.

Our soldiers and Marines were often put in bad - even deadly - situations by incompetent "career" officers, who should have been prosecuted for negligent homicide.
I mean this with the utmost respect to the men who fought and died and lived through this event. I know this is little consolation, but I thank you all for you service and my freedom.
Hollywood always fks it up, embellishing and fabricating to make war into some kind of glorious thing, and invent hero's out of nothing. They always send the wrong message. The story here is these guys were put in an unwinnable situation, and more would have die were it not for a decision to mount a counter attack, and due to their loyalty to each other.
John Mastrangel pathetic military strategy. Bravery being the only strategy stopped working ever since we as people have allowed horrible military leaders to risk their men’s lives to go on a wild goose chases.

Edgy burrito Everybody does their jobs - some people, however, go above and beyond - that's all I'm saying ... get this 'job' idea out of your head. I thought you were being sarcastic ...
shadowdawg04 Tell that to the guy in this video who didn't want to be labeled as anything and was just doing what was asked of him. I don't now if you understand this but soldiers generally don't like being labeled as "heroes" after suffering traumatic experiences. I said this because I have friends in the military that talk to me about these sort of things. People don't seem to understand that these men had to go through some pretty traumatic experience to get labeled as such. It's kinda like how when someone dies in extreme combat and receives a medal of honor it's kinda pointless because you know, their dead. Receiving that medal doesn't help the grieving family it just makes things worse. These soldiers will always see this as just part of their job and nothing else. That was my point. He doesn't think of himself as a hero because if he did that would mean hes putting himself at a higher mantle then all the other soldiers he was with who fought just as hard as him.
Edgy burrito Have a grandfather who fought during the Battle of the Bugle in the Ardennes and uncles who regularly walked point in Vietnam, as 2nd Lieutenants ... with more scars from just bullet fragmentation alone than you could imagine! None of them ever thought they were just doing their job - that mindset won't get you through anything - the reasons might vary, but men who fight without reasons are not fighting - they are just surviving. Civilians know next nothing about valor or courage, except what some politician or teacher has told them ... none of which have any credibility in such matters and who's thoughts, therefore, do not warrant any serious consideration. So do not wonder whether or not 'I understand' anything about this subject - I do, and my family does ...
Hard to watch......Was in the "Stan" 03-04 with 10th MTN, lost 4 good men. I've made piece with the fact that I left a part of me there and I'll never get it back the rest of my days on this earth.
I'd like to say that Keating was an isolated example of a base located in a bad spot, but we keep putting bases in positions like that. I flew perimeter patrol missions while in the Balkans for bases placed in similar terrible positions with high ground on all sides that looked straight down into the bases. We never learn.
That is such basic knowledge in any kind of situation have high ground you take one good look at a valley like that why put a base there you are just asking to get shot at how did the place even get past building let alone being stationed I cant wrap my mind why anyone would want to build something in a spot leaving you so vulnerable.
Cullen Payne you would except you hear how the military stuck them at such a disadvantage, these story's allow the exposure of how fucked up the system can be
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to live and cope with life and others after such traumatic experience. God bless our military and all first responders.

He was trying to lighten the blows of his questions he knew were gonna be gut-punches to this soldier - if you think he's bad you oughta see the British interview some people, they really ask some obnoxious and mean questions of people trying to get a rise - sometimes it's almost astonishing how mean they can be.
Whoever chose the position for that outpost should have been held responsible for the deaths of all those brave soldiers.
Art Mills involuntary manslaughter. Literally.
The book The Outpost covers a lot of the background and responsibility for the location of the outpost and who the commanders were.
Why get men to defend a terribly positioned outpost just to level it in the end anyway
I agree!
It appears it was a high level decision influenced by the politics of keeping Karzai happy, so the person who must take ultimate responsibility is David Petraeus.
He just smiled a guy who went to Afghanistan and watched his friend die and said " in the end I guess it all came down to saving private mace"
Epic
Face palm
Reporters are pieces of shit just like most Hollywood actors. Fake clueless liberals.
...because for those few, so far from anything remotely resembling home/ family/ America, Mace represented everybody's "kid brother" there...
Usually, its the Privates with the least amount of military experience, the least amount of tactical savvy that "seasoned" troops try their hardest to protect.
For anyone who's served in a 'grunt' squad/ platoon, even for a few months, this is a 'no-brainer'...
Ryan Zander - "liberals" ? Like your bitch buddy Rush Limbaugh?
TheUpsnDowns I don't even know who that is but ok.
Ryan Zander 'Might help if you watched the interview again, listening a bit closer...without distractions.
'Just a suggestion; that's all...
“These things aren’t given out when something went right !!” What an impact statement!!!
I just saw “the outpost” really touching story! Thank you for your service!🙏🏾

I wonder who the genius was that thought it would be a good idea to put a post down in a hole where you a lower than all the ground around you.
Alexandermovies Well, you never stated that theory of yours in the original comment. I was just saying it was the only way they could effectively place troops in remote areas at the time.
effectively place troops..
Alexandermovies Keep rockin that tin foil hat my dude. You're a pathetic loser who blabs politics all day and everyone is tired of listening to you. So you go online and start conversations with people who never said anything about politics just so someone can hear your delusional theories. Good luck in life.
Words cannot express the sorrow you feel for such loss and the lost of your friends. Thank you for sharing your story, it is deeply moving and it is a good way to remember your friends. With respect and in remembrance of your fellow warriors.
Je m apelle philippe et je me contre fou de la selle?
I was going to type something out but you took the words out of my mouth. Truly stunning the bravery these men have.
It is a decent account, in that it speaks to the matter of what a shit sandwich it was to put our soldiers in.
aAaa aAaa yup, u just a become a pawn in their game
How else are you going to draw out enough target to aim our A10's, stealth bombers, artillery, and smart weapons? Fish aren't going to bite on a bare hook.
The Taliban probably thought Allah had dropped a peach in their lap when they saw Combat Outpost Keating.
Nothing has changed since Vietnam. "Although the heavily fortified Hill 937 was of little strategic value, U.S. command ordered its capture by a frontal assault, only to abandon it soon thereafter." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hamburger_Hill
agentanaranjado Yep. Reminded me of same useless objective as Hamburger Hill. Soldiers putting their lives on the line.. FOR NOTHING of real value. Just pawns.
The interviewer looks to be holding back a smile for most of the interview. That’s disturbing.

I am absolutely not a tactician by any means, but the first thing I thought of when they showed that picture was, "damn they must've been getting rained on, with all those hills surrounding them." What a shame they got hung out to dry by some officer behind a desk somewhere.
You’re spot on. That’s exactly how it happened.
Who is this god awful interviewer!? So disrespectful.
It's CBS, they have no credibility or respect.
@Victor Wilson ...And? I wasn't criticizing his service.

yup he's a tard. also, did he rly do a pun on saving pvt. ryan? omg
rakuencallisto he wasn't kidnapped and forcefully interviewed!
rakuencallisto the interviewer was an idiot for the saving private mace comment... shit ain't a joke old fool, dudes got tears in his eyes.
explain too me just how the fuck are you supposed to do an interview with out asking questions.
That soldier isn't some snow flake that needs to be coddled, he's a god dam warrior, you treat him as such and ask the fucking questions, anything less is a waste of your time and more importantly a waste of his.
Cody Webster you can suppose, whatever the hell you like
The interviewer is about to be RKO'd
"Sounds like at the end, the battle came down to saving Private Mace". For an interviewer, he's not very bright is he?
i wouldnt know how to react to such a dumb statement! i am no american nor do i support the war neither in irak afghanistan or anywhere else in the world but i feel with this soldier
Let's give credit to the real hero here: the beard.

Luke Kilmartin I totally AGREE !
That's why I detest, any News coverage of the Wars. They don't give a RATS ASS, regarding our Military Men & Women ! It's all about their damn ratings, sickens me to the core !
God Bless our Military ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
What was the guy supposed do?
Luke Kilmartin duck the liberal media
Well they tend to only care about what people want to see. Jake Tapper, the Whitehouse correspondent for CNN is making a movie about it that is so untrue and disrespectful to these guys it's sickening. Mace is my brother. This film needs to be stopped!
Not trivialize the serious interview.
How do you feel now…knowing it all was for nothing 😭
His name was something like Pvt. Carter and he was one of two to receive a medal of honor for his actions. You can look him up.
"These things aren't given out when something went right. A lot of stuff went wrong" ❤️
you are given orders, you do NOT question those orders, you go to where you are ordered to go. before ppl criticize, pick up a weapon get your boots on and follow orders. salute you guys
and now you live on welfare or in a psychiatric ward because that crazy movie can't stop inside your head
Every veteran I have met that has seen combat say the same thing, "I saw some stuff and I did some stuff".
What war did you serve in?
The best human beings talk the way you do, downplaying their role and wishing they had done more. This is how a hero thinks.
His beard alone received a Medal of Honor also.
“Saving private mace” I hope this interviewer was fired, what is wrong with this man
Agreed. He thought that movies actually matter in real life.

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things!! So much Respect!!
Our soldiers and Marines were often put in bad - even deadly - situations by incompetent "career" officers, who should have been prosecuted for negligent homicide.
I mean this with the utmost respect to the men who fought and died and lived through this event. I would like to see this story told through a hollywood camera lens, but with military accuracy to the fact-Not hollywood flare.
Stories such as this one need not be forgotten by the masses.
This is actually being made into a movie.
Anybody know who the commander was that decided to hang this unit out to dry? I hope he was reprimanded and drummed out of the service.
Same man they said it held no strategical advantage then why put men in there?
He was ordered to give the order. Etc.
@Sentient being I can tell .
Someone ordered these American kids there and is now hiding under a rock. That individual ought to be identified and pay with his/her life.
John Mastrangel pathetic military strategy. Bravery being the only strategy stopped working ever since we as people have allowed horrible military leaders to risk their men’s lives to go on a wild goose chases.
3 tours in Afghanistan! Total badass. Respect for our fighting men and women.
I love this man with all my heart. I'm sorry that you had to go through what you did.
God bless this country and may God bless the men who protect it. I hope things like this never happen again.

I salute you and all who fought with you, warrior.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE AND SERVICE, SIR. WELCOME HOME.

This man is not weak, he is very courageous and God bless him and may he recieve peace and God's mercy and salvation in Jesus name.
A hero carrying the weight forever. Thank you for your service. The only thing that bothers me about interviews like this is that the reporters asking the questions usually seem like vultures to me...trying to elicit responses that will make the interviewee tear up and get emotional...all to try to get higher ratings for the show. It almost always seems predatory to me.
@Gary Danielyou don't try to make a WAR HERO CRY my Great Grandpa saw combat in korea as a Marine 1st division able company hit 3 times and he said that he was about to cry because of retelling some battles
I'd feel pretty angry that my men were put in that silly position in the first place
We can't be more proud of our men a woman that sacrifice so much..god bless you all...
Thank you for you and your platoons bravery in this battle, this may seem shallow but what you went through and endured is what this country was built on. God Bless you all.
Thank you for your service sir! I hope you have a great life, you deserve it. Live for them.
His words on 7:48 ..... after he was asked that question... resonates with me... I was there during the invasion in 2003 Iraq... and did 2 additional tours of combat as a scout..... I have lost brothers and felt the sting of losses.... but the continuing feeling of pain ..... keeps me alive.... THEY DIED,..... SO I CAN BE HERE!.....
God bless you.
Thank you for your service and for your defense. You may not feel like you do anything worth it, but please be rest assured that your service has not been in vain. I am free because of you and your missions/duties.

True American Hero! Thanks for your service and sacrifice
He's not a hero just a guy doing his job.
Edgy burrito
Everybody does their jobs - some people, however, go above and beyond - that's all I'm saying ... get this 'job' idea out of your head.
Edgy burrito
Have a grandfather who fought during the Battle of the Bugle in the Ardennes and uncles who regularly walked point in Vietnam, as 2nd Lieutenants ... with more scars from just bullet fragmentation alone than you could imagine!
God bless every single man that serves this country, every one.
God bless you soldier thanks for your time and bless all the fallen soldier's may they rest in peace
"I hope it never leaves"
Exactly, that sentence stroke me to tears..
