  • In this video I take you along as I paint this custom 1968 Camaro for my buddy Jim from start to finish. We have been restoring this Camaro for the last 3 years. Every panel has been replaced and it has full ‪@detroitspeed‬ suspension and mini tubs. The color is a Chrysler passion red in DBC base coat with DCU2002 clear.

    Just a tip/ friendly advise. Don’t spray half the panel. Spray the full panel and run the perimeter first. Spraying half and half you end up with a double layer of paint where you joined them. It’s also possible on some metallics and pearls to see it in the paint. You want a nice steady consistent flow across the whole panel. That way it’s all on the same coat and there’s no seam of paint overlap. You want it to flow perfectly with no breaks in the direction of the paint flow. Also a push and pull method works really well to help avoid orange peal and overspray. Start from one side of the car at the bottom and work your way up to the roof. Start from other side of roof and pull the paint down. That way it’s not letting overspray directly fall on fresh paint you just laid. Paint didn’t turn out too bad on the car though. Love the color!

      While good advice not necessarily true! Ever heard or Blending? Happens everyday in every paint booth on the planet! Ur basically saying if U start at the bottom of a car n pull your wet line all the way over the top U have no overlap! Also NOT TRUE! About the only time I would entirely agree with that is if U are spraying Candy! With that being said it isn't a bad idea to spray every job as if it were candy. Basecoat clear coat it just isn't that critical. N He did a good job!

      You nailed it my man. So true what you said. Experience does count. Despite all that he managed to lay it all down perfectly. That gun pressure was pretty high too with a huge fan. I don't know how he did it, but he did. It looks awesome !!

Then I wetsand the jambs and leave the doors shut while I spray color on the rest of the car then on the last coat of clear I open the jambs and spray the whole car with clear including the jambs and leave all the doors open till it drys. This leaves zero tape lines. Just for full custom jobs.I got the paint gun from @motivatedpainters on youtube.

      Thanks, I love that gun!!! The way I set mine up is , I turn the fan pattern knob all the way open unless I need to get into a tight place, as for the fluid aka the lower knob I back it all the way out, then squeeze the trigger all the way open" with no paint or air hooked up lol" then turn the fluid knob in till I feel it start pushing on the trigger I stop. As for air aroun 25 to 30 psi at the regulator on the gun, you can just play around with it to see what you like. Base coat , I have always used a trick my buddy taught me many years ago, paint till you get full coverage then do one more medium to light coat, which usually ends up being 3 coats of base. Clear coat, I usually do 3 to 4 heavy handed coats but I always cut and buff my stuff , cause I want it as slick as possible!!!! The first coat is usually a good medium wet coat then after tacking I like to drill it on lol. Hope this helps!!!!!!

    That is very nice and the pearl is tricky to see exactly what color it is. Yes, some red but almost a dark copper. I will have to it in the sunshine for sure.
    I have sit on the back porch at sons house and look at colors of car, truck and SUV’s. Folks, in my eye so much is boring, very few in the copper family and even then, it is too orange.

Motor oil went next, wheel bearing grease on motor slide, belt still good, have printed schematic for this 30 year old Maytag pair and discovered the “Truth” table on timer/reed switch assembly and figured it out. Never made sense as they use circle on switch 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14. The timer shows T/C & B/C but 3 rows of 8 contacts. Hit me like a ton of feathers. Got the Fluke 87-5 out and found it means top contacts to center, Bottom row of contacts to middle. Colors matched & wires are inked with markings on schematic. Finished but took dryer vent apart a middle & ran vacuum hose both directions, works super! Raised 4 kids and clothes from two adults. I guess 1.2 million loads went thru both!

    I have a 1969 camaro that I'm going to paint it will be metallic on the roof do I have to make one pass from the front to back or if I do like half then the other half how far do I over lap so I do not get any tiger stripes and same thing on the sides thanks Bob.

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, It tends to work better to go from front to back because when you stop it can cause a build up where you start and stop. I like your idea on the roof. I personally would start spraying in the middle of the roof spraying from front wind sheild to rear and work your way twords the outside of the roof, then go to the other side and start in the middle where you've already sprayed then work your way out tword you. I do like 3 coats or till covered the turn down your pressure a little and just kinda fog the last coat your gun should be around 1ft. From the pannel on this coat, (aka) drop coat and it will even out your metallics.

    I have a tangent thought, if you stuck a car on a rotisserie and had it rotate at the center of mass and then just painted the whole thing in one go; would this work? I've never painted a car before... But I plan on doing it at some point in the future and wanted to know if the thought I had would work or would it just be overly complicated and unnecessary.

    • @ACDesignsGarage
      @ACDesignsGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Yes you could, we usually paint the underside of the body on the rotisserie, it makes it eaiser, if you look back in my channel you'll see a video of me raptor lining the bottom of this 68, its easy to put the body shell on the rotisserie but its a pain to do the whole car on there, but it can be done. I Usually paint the car apart but its challenging to put back together with out scratching stuff unless you have a bunch of people helping you. With the way I did on this video is alot of taping, but you dont have to put it together lol, hope this helps, thanks for watching!!!!

    Hi, I ordered that gun from Gabriel, I just wondered what nozzle you used for the base and clear? I think mine is coming with a 1.8 which is good for primer , the gun was affordable but if you had to buy all different nozzle sets it could get expensive. I appreciate your advice, thx.

    Looks great I keep seeing first Gen cameros being painted really makes me miss my old 69 RS/SS big block that I asked my parents to sell when I was headed to Bosnia in 1982 as a young Marine … what a mistake I should have just had it stored until I retired in 2011 …. Question why didn’t you paint under the deck lid and hood ?
    I think if I was to do one now I would have it done on a rotisserie with a frame off paint job so the bottom could be painted as well I know it is a lot of work but it’s well worth it finding an old muscle car in good condition with no body filler is very difficult these days I’ve been looking
