Awesome looking car. Only issue is that price overlaps with accord and Camry too much for my liking. You really have to want a civic enough to pay that premium, and I’m not in that category.
@@TheStraightPipesthing is, it isn’t really base Camry vs top trim civic for US pricing. It's more like fully loaded vs 70-90% loaded and that 70-90% loaded is still equal or better feature wise while being a class above in size. We recently got an XLE Camry, no options, for less OTD as Honda dealers wouldn’t budge price wise.
Many will prefer the smaller size with almost the same room better handling while being larger than the prius. And faster than all of them. And the largest hatch. You do give up some mpgs. Not to mention tons of mods already available.
@@Tigerex966 i feel most hybrid buyers don’t care about driving dynamics like we do. They just want a Point A to B reliable car that’ll run forever, which the Camry is. And most families probably will appreciate the bigger backseat, bigger usable trunk behind the seats, better ride, and better value. Plus it isn’t a bad car if you need one do-everything car. It’s like I say, if this was 29k-31k, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. That’s Corolla/elantra pricing and this destroys them. But 33k against bigger, nicer cars, idk.

I like most of it. I don't like that it doesn't have vents at the back and the back pocket behind the driver seat. Also the price is high. I still wish there were analog gauges in cars. Could you get them to make manual hybrid?

Love it. Totally normal car. I still enjoy the expensive reviews, but these normal car ones feel more practical and useful. Thanks! Also, I wonder what maintenance on Honda hybrids are like? I still have a combustion engine, but have been pondering a hybrid or EV as my next car, and wonder what the practicality of living with a Honda or Toyota hybrid would be like? Having a doubly complicated drive-train? EVs are less parts, so hopefully less maintenance, but the infrastructure still isn't there yet. Should I get a hybrid? 48 mpg sure does sound good!
Look at years of Toyota Prius maintenance data. The hybrid battery will eventually have to be replaced. Outside of that it’s fairly close to the maintenance of a gas car

I'm old enough to remember when Honda only offered the Civic Si in a hatchback. My first car in 1993 was a used 1989 Si . As a 30 year plus Honda owner, if they had a Si hatchback in 2012, that's what I would have bought instead of my 2012 Fit Sport.
As someone who drives a 2021 Honda Insight EX with just a little over 40,000 miles, I really like this one. That being said, idk if it will be worth it for me to trade in for it since its only a slight upgrade with hatchback space and a bit more range. Plus the Insight has a 10.3gal fuel tank size that still gets me 496 miles of range. I would totally go for it if I didn't already have an Insight with more than half the loan paid off...that and it only cost me $26k msrp before TL&F.
You guys trying to neutral drop it becuase “it has no transmission” was a real bug brain move lol. This is the latest generation of the Honda hybrid system. It’s still just removed from the accord though. And Weber auto has a good breakdown of how these Honda hybrid systems work. Yes they do mainly just use the engine as a generator. So it’s only spinning a motor to generate electric which goes to the battery and traction motor to turn the wheels. BUT there is still a direct connect to the wheels for what we consider 6th gear on the manual, or Overdrive on an old school auto. It does this over 60-70mph in many scenarios. And as far as the cvt function goes I can and does have different ratios thanks to meshed gears in the transmission that go from the generator motor to the traction motor. There are three functioning modes for the transmission. It’s a very cool system. But it does in fact still have a transmission. Thankfully Honda foresaw someone trying to neutral drop it and programmed it to not be possible lol.
@@marcinmerrimack1726 From what I've seen (Weber Auto video) there is no way for the traction motor to disconnect from the wheels so I would imagine that in "direct connect" mode it is given enough power to at least make it's mass neutral in effect. But the system controller is pretty sophisticated and I think it's going to provide whatever it determines is the best combination to get the car to do what you're asking it to do.
@@pi.actual Ok, thanks for your answer. Makes sense. I should have a look at the Weber videos. The ‘concern’ I have is that at highway cruising speeds, the Civic Hybrid power train relies solely on a 2L engine. My Accord has the K24 2.4L and is able to give me some punch if I want it especially if I downshift. Of course whether the traction motor can actually assist or is just made ‘mass neutral,’ the power required for that would have to be diverted from the engine itself or be supplied (for a very limited time) from the battery. Would be nice to know what exactly happens at highway speeds.
@@marcinmerrimack1726 I have owned the sedan for over a month now and have done a number of road trips. At speeds below 80 mph it will still go into full EV mode running off battery and engine shut off. Above 80 mph I have not seen it do that. But even above 80 if I punch it I can still feel the torque so it is obviously not relying solely on the engine. The best way I can describe the system is that it is totally seamless. It drives so much like a normal car, even the simulated shifts, you wouldn't know just by the feel of it.
The Civic Hybrid has nearly twice the fuel economy of a VW GTI while being not much slower in acceleration. No doubt the GTI is also faster in the corners and has an overall sportier look and feel. Put some high performance tires on the Civic should improve its handling significantly. To me the Civic Hybrid makes it hard to justify getting a GTI unless one's priority is sportiness above all else. The GTI is also a bit more expensive than the Civic where I live.
Maybe I'm getting old, but test drove one of and I have to say that if you like hearing road noise/tire noise this is a car for you. Maybe it wasn't that bad but after getting out of my Altima and getting into this, the honda felt small and cheap.
Not currently in the market for a car, but if I was, I'd be buying this. Every sub-midized sedan, hatch, and SUV up and down the entire market should be scared of this car. Interior is better looking and more ergonomic than everything except for Porsches, fuel efficiency of a Prius, impressive hatch space, and rear seat headroom that beats most small SUVs. As someone who has lived in a very snowy climate, the only thing this car lacks is AWD, but that isn't necessary for 95% of people in North America.
if you adjust for inflation, the 1999 civic ex sedan is $2000 MORE expensive than this car. meaning your dollar today buys you more car than your dollar did in 1999. this car is $13-15k cheaper than the average new car today. the 1999 civic ex was about $3k cheaper than the average new car. so this car has only gotten more affordable when comparing to the average. i think you're looking at car prices from 20+ years ago and thinking "wow i could buy that" but you're thinking with the money you have now and not the money you had 20+ years ago.
@@dbeckMSP yeah I don't think people understand how much car they are actually getting for the money when you compare the prices. The same goes for the Miata, when you adjust the price of previous models with the inflation rate you'll see the price hasn't really gone up and you're getting a lot more car.
I may be the only one but I don’t believe the sound is fake. It’s piped in more in sport but it’s always there. There’s no gearbox so as the charging motor and electric motor realise how hard the acceleration (and fast power drain) then the engine throttles up in stages to provide more power. The staged revving is faking gears but it is real staged increase in revs for a real purpose. My opinion based on 6,000 miles. Virtually no one can review this car’s drivetrain correctly
I'll take the prius. Base model vs Base model the toyota gets 8MPG more (just by official estimates, in my irl experience honda always exaggerates their mpg and toyota gets better mileage than advertised), cost 3K less, and looks better
I'm pissed because my girl is getting one of these and I have a 10th gen. I love the 10th gen design, but pretty much 50 mpg is INSANE. I would 100% take that over the looks. I would say, this new hybrid system would absolutely KILL in the new Integra. With that being said, I'm gonna wait for the new prelude to decide on which car to transition into as far as a hybrid car goes!
Have engine design & tolerances gotten so good that oil weights are dropping every year? Wow 0W-20. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a 2012 Subaru & it recommends 5W-30 or 0W-20Syn. Awesome looking car. Only issue is that price overlaps with accord and Camry too much for my liking. You really have to want a civic enough to pay that premium, and I’m not in that category.
But base Camry or top trim civic??
"Honda, bring back the S2000."
This, but really. Bring back the S2000.
I agree perfect first car. Some people like me wont buy a used car for their kid. I want all the newest saftey features and full warrenty.
I plan to buy this car, drive it myself for the next 3 years and then give it to my daughter when she turns 16. She’ll have a lightly used, safe, modern car that I won’t care too much about when she inevitably bangs it up.
I was given Grandpa’s old VW Rabbit and was told “don’t crash.” It was a different time.
@@ewl7777I read the last bit as "inevitably bags it" and had a laugh thinking she was a lead foot😂 but I guess if she "bangs it up" that isn't the best either haha
I'm 32 and I currently have an Acura TSX wagon. If the TSX ever breaks I would consider this as a replacement. I was looking at Rav4 Prime and Kia Niro Plug in hybrid, but this civic has lane keep, which I really want in my next car.
The Civic has certainly grown up. Impressive
Even though I wouldn't want one (three pedals please!) this seems like such a perfect car for most people- Honda is killing it with these refreshes. I wonder what the long term reliability will be like.
I like most of it. I don't like that it doesn't have vents at the back and the back pocket behind the driver seat. Also the price is high. I still wish there were analog gauges in cars. Could you get them to make manual hybrid?
This is the amazing car that I thought it would be. Nice review!
PLEASE, do a review of the new Jetta GLi because thats the best contender for this new Civic right now especially for the price (cheaper if not the same price as this) and it offers more!!
I think some Audi reviews are long overdue! Would love to see you guys pick apart any of the new S3, S4, RS3, A8 or S8 models.
This will be my first new car when I graduate college. I have been dreaming of a hybrid civic hatchback since high school and was waiting for you guys to review it. Awesome car and awesome video!
@@TheStraightPipes Thanks! Totally will check it out. Been pondering one of those snazzy new Prius, but still kinda like this Honda a bit more... will try to find Honda hybrid data too.
Ive been swapping out cars every two years from eco box cars to sport cars and trucks and honestly this is going to be my next car for next year as I drive a lot for sports and work around 40-60 thousand kms this car would be no compromise other than it doesnt have awd
these are the kinds of cars that will help kill or slow down the full ev market, incredible engineering and build quality
The 4 to 500 mile full EVs will be here sooner than you realize. Honda and Toyota will be late to the game.
@@brettlogwood8856 that may be the case but nobody wants to buy ev's, that's the major hurdle
That leaf you picked up in the grill is a perfect color match. Honda needs to rename the color.
I'm old enough to remember when Honda only offered the Civic Si in a hatchback. My first car in 1993 was a used 1989 Si . As a 30 year plus Honda owner, if they had a Si hatchback in 2012, that's what I would have bought instead of my 2012 Fit Sport.
Loved the review😍 Great work you guys!
How's this compared to the new Camry
As someone who drives a 2021 Honda Insight EX with just a little over 40,000 miles, I really like this one. That being said, idk if it will be worth it for me to trade in for it since its only a slight upgrade with hatchback space and a bit more range. Plus the Insight has a 10.3gal fuel tank size that still gets me 496 miles of range. I would totally go for it if I didn't already have an Insight with more than half the loan paid off...that and it only cost me $26k msrp before TL&F.
bring back the actual hatchback
I'm just waiting until they hit the lots in Milwaukee. I like Boost Blue and Urban Grey the best. Upcharge colors. Black wheels or no?
those halogens in the back are killing me
Just a 25 sport touring hatch in Urban Grey. Love this car!
That color is fire
Civic eHEV hatch is a good car that is balanced and energy efficient. If you have the chance, be sure to test drive yourself.
Thanks :)
@roochiecooch Does the traction motor still contribute to the power in “direct connect” mode or is it only the engine itself powering the car then?
Amazing review, amazing car by Honda. This is going to take a lot of market share from competitors with similar vehicles
Should have given a shoutout to the Natchez Trace Parkway… it’s not just some “backroad”
Opening few seconds just reminded me... Whatever happened to the....... "BOX Test!"? Lol
I'm surprised no one commented on the front bumper of the civic almost looking identical to the LCI bmw 330
My 2010 Civic is still running smooth. 120k kms. Maybe I’ll upgrade when it breaks down who knows when. Maybe give it another 5 years 🤣
This is a pretty cool color, but U really prefer the blue, but Honda needs to make the Civics and the upcoming Prelude available in Barbados Yellow
I am so ready for this maaan actually my only issue would be the leather seats cause it's hot where I'm at
It's time for me to finally upgrade from my 2012 Civic!
Love that new Civic M Performance bumper 😂
I miss the days when a civic was an affordable car
if you adjust for inflation, the 1999 civic ex sedan is $2000 MORE expensive than this car. meaning your dollar today buys you more car than your dollar did in 1999. this car is $13-15k cheaper than the average new car today. the 1999 civic ex was about $3k cheaper than the average new car. so this car has only gotten more affordable when comparing to the average. i think you're looking at car prices from 20+ years ago and thinking "wow i could buy that" but you're thinking with the money you have now and not the money you had 20+ years ago.
@@dbeckMSP yeah I don't think people understand how much car they are actually getting for the money when you compare the prices. The same goes for the Miata, when you adjust the price of previous models with the inflation rate you'll see the price hasn't really gone up and you're getting a lot more car.
@@dbeckMSP are you comparing the lowest trims? This hydrid one they tested is 40k cad which is kinda crazy for a Civic.
@@nicktankard1244 no I’m comparing the highest non si trims. EX was the top in 1999. Hybrid civic in the US is $32k
@@dbeckMSP well yes which is about the same in cad. Civic in 1999 was like 12k i think. Oh maybe it was the lowest trim idk
You guys should review the 2024 Chevy traverse!
Thanks for demonstrating the difference between the fake engine sound between modes.
My bad more power being more charge…..
Good thing it has the regular sunroof.... those full glass roofs are unreliablely bad. Do not buy if u do never open them they're more likely to fail
So when the hybrid battery warranty runs out how much is the replacement battery? Thanks.
@2:56 I just don't like how the bottom grill pokes out. Looks like a dam beak on a car. It's like they're trying to make a Carolla
I'll take the prius. Base model vs Base model the toyota gets 8MPG more (just by official estimates, in my irl experience honda always exaggerates their mpg and toyota gets better mileage than advertised), cost 3K less, and looks better
Does the App now support Remote Start/lock/unlock ? Honda didn't support this in the previous Gen!

Go with the Lude
Price/Performance best car in the world! Great Job, Honda ❤
I may trade my honda element for this in a hatch in this same color.
My question would be how the direct injection engine last long-term. Carbon buildup is a pain
Putting on the list on my next new car
Great car, great value, great review!
If Honda made a Civic EV, it would be the best selling car in America.
I'd love an SI hatch!
Have engine design & tolerances gotten so good that oil weights are dropping every year? Wow 0W-20.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a 2012 Subaru & it recommends 5W-30 or 0W-20Syn. Of course being a 12yrs old car it has it's issues but I specifically remember the Oil Temp light coming on during a very long drive. The mechanic said the oil is too thin thus allowing overheating. Since then [3yrs] I have been putting 10W-30 & never seen the Oil Temp Light again even in a few hard drives. [You got an oil sponsor now, so should fit right in.]
Wait till you see bmw and Toyota and others now recommending 0w16 and 0w8
Do a comparison between THIS and the MAZDA 3 HATCH.
This and a Suzuki Jimny is all I need.
This and Camry will be best sellers!
Bring back the box test!
