Walmart has a cheap bullet journal for 6 dollars. It has 3 bookmarks, dot grid a key and index, 250 numbered pages. With a pen test page at the back and a pocket. I think their perfect for beginners. I just started and that's what I am using.
Hello, since I discovered your channel i just can't stop watching your videos! I had heard before about the bullet journal method but, to be honest, it has been thanks to you that i decided to start my own one. I'm from Spain and I love how you explain everything, your voice is very clear and easy to understand so please keep doing this kind of videos :)
I've been using my bullet journal for five months now and it looks very much like your early efforts. It works and I really can't be bothered with all the prettiness. I use it several times a day, especially the trackers, and I think this is the important thing. Congratulations on being the only person on UA-cam who can pronounce 'Leuchtturm'.
Not exactly a question, but BuzzFeed recently published a BuJo Mental Health Tracker, with step by step instructions, and it has been so helpful for me, living with mental illness, I think it's worthy of at least being mentioned since Journaling can help so many people overcome depression or anxiety or cope with chronic mental illness such as bipolar disorder (my case). Great job so far! I'm almost a month into my BuJo and you helped me so much that I found my own style and don't find these videos new to me, but they would have helped so much when I was just getting started, I bet most people are loving them.
nykka3 not sure if you found it or not, but I did just found this one: www.buzzfeed.com/rachelwmiller/mental-health-bullet-journal?.gl3ed89x3k#.sjadQxJ7oV
I love how you showed us your true first BuJo, your practice one. That's how I've started too in a cheap notebook and it helps so much I would have never started otherwise I think! Now I'm ready in 2017 to start in a dot grid notebook and I'm so excited for it!
When you said some people are scared to start you basically described the last 2 weeks for me! I bought everything had everything I needed and kept stopping myself from starting it because I was afraid of messing it up. I finally started a few days ago! I LOVE you pages and your videos!
I am so glad that you added the bit about your very first unfinished bullet journal. I tend to have a thing about starting projects and not finishing them, because I overwhelm myself. So that helped with some of my fears.
Love the series! Your first few UA-cam videos inspired to me to start my BuJo journey, so I'm excited that you're diving into the details and spreading the love! I appreciate your insistence on JUST STARTING! My first 10-15 pages are messy and uncoordinated, but over the past two months, they've begun to take shape on their own, and now I'm really loving the system! I totally agree that the best advice you can give someone who is just discovering the Bullet Journal system is to simply start! Thanks, Kara!
Thank you much for taking the time to do this vlog. I follow you each and every week, and am learning so so much. I am 75% through my first bullet journal. My first bullet journal was really an experiment and this series is really helping me think what do I want from my bullet journal.
Just purchased a journal and supplies online, it's coming tomorrow! So excited to start this, I know it is seriously going to help me stay organized and happy!
WOW, YOU NAILED IT! I am so afraid of messing up and having to be unsuccessful and have to start over. Fear of failure, it rules me, and prevents me from taking on challenges. I'm starting bullet journaling as my baby steps to overcome my fear. Thanks for your videos.
"unfortunately it only comes in black." Of course, now it comes in your favorite color! *dance* I got one of the black official bujo Leuchterms earlier this year, and I'm going to be starting it January 1st. So excited. I've been bullet journaling for a bit more than a year now, but I'm still really enjoying this series.
Having seen many your blog posts its easy to see you do some similar brainstorming for your blog posts. Also, its great to see your first bujo looks like the average persons bujo. Thanks for sharing that.
As always the video is great. I was able to walk away with a 'to do list' of things to think about. Thanks for the tips on different was to brainstorm. I will be working on that for my 2017 planner. You have done a good job at keeping this simple and giving us bite size pieces so we are not overwhelmed. Thanks again for the series.
Thanks, Andrea! Next week's video might be a bit longer due to covering so many parts of the system, but I'll be including time-stamps so that it's easier to jump around to the parts that you need :) I'm so glad that you got some ideas to think about moving forward :)
Great series! I'm in the pre-plan stage. Thank you for showing your very very first bullet journal and for mentioning practicing--brilliant! I love seeing the evolution of your style.
Have been looking into starting a bullet journal for awhile. Just can't seem to get started. Timid about it I guess. Thank you for your video support. Going to order my journal, so here goes!! Wish me luck and keep doing videos for we that are challenged!!
This is very helpful, thank you for the video. I love how it's structured and well explained. Not overwhelming in information. And I found it amusing when at the end there is nothing going on with the journal and just your hands are talking 😀 I only noticed that at the very end cause it works just as if we'd be watching your face, you have all these different expressions! All in all, lovely.
Hi Boho.. I started bullet journalling recently in a regular lined notebook with a blue and a black pen and a pencil.. I thought I will start with a cheap notebook and then buy an official one if the system is working for me.. And now, I am really enjoying the journey.. It helps me remember my tasks and I also write a short summary of my daily activities and thoughts at night.. And watching your videos give me so much inspiration and confidence.. Thank you Boho for this amazing series.. Also started doing the zentangle challenge on your recommendation and I'm loving it as well..
Thank you for this series, Kara. I especially appreciated your showing your first BuJo. Makes it a bit more comforting when I start mine next month! :)
I just wanted to thank you for this incredible playlist :) I found it a week ago and have watched it twice since:) The idea of pre-planning is so helpful! I have just finished brainstorming and setting drafts of my spreads and can't wait to get my first notebook and set it up. I had what you may call the fear of a clean sheet of paper (I was thinking that I would ruin it), so drafting was great for me. And as it turned out, I am not so bad at it. Thank you!
I'm very bad at being organized but the bullet journal seems like a great idea, I will definitely add your affirmation page from your flip through video from last year I thought it was fantastic :)
I am loving your entire channel, but especially this series in my venture into bullet journaling, I'm absolutely loving the system, I think it may just stick! I'm looking forward to having many books to look back on, maybe one day I'll invest in a leuchtturm but for now, a cheap sketchbook I got from Walmart is working wonders!
Another great video, Kara! A while ago I tried the Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens, at your recommendation. They're very nice, as you say, but recently, I've found that I actually like the Staedtler Pigment Liners even better for my black fineliner pen. Just a tip for anyone who's interested. :)
Thanks for the classes!. As I was/am practicing, I use a 50 cent composition note book. Now I use it as a layout book for brainstorming. I also got an Artists' Loft dotted notebook at Michael's to start on my "real" journal.
just what i needed to see/hear before starting my new bullet journal! i've been feeling so overwhelmed and scared to start, so thank you sososo much!!!
You're welcome, Jacqueline! That fear of getting started is real! Hopefully some pre-planning will help you to feel more comfortable when you dive in :)
Your videos inspired me so much! You just revolutionized my bullet journal and made me be more relaxed and true to my way of planning. Please continue with the amazing work! :-)
Thank you. I really appreciate your videos, as well as your blog. Very helpful for me as a rank beginner--I'd say that I'm in the pre-pre-planning stage.
Oh my god I litterally used the same washi tape on my first bullet journal It litteraly looks the sane with the lettering and everything lol this gives me soooo much hope!!!
Excellent! I am sooo into this series! Thanks for doing it! I have a few unused lined Moleskines hanging around that I'm now motivated to dive into so I can learn what layout works best for me after which time I plan to buy an official Bullet Journal from Leuchtturm when they become available again. :-)
I bought and began my journal, but I messed up bc I didnt prepare or brainstorm. So now... I am doing extensive research and preparing. I recommend this series to anyone wanting to start.
my mom mentioned shes been reading about bullet journaling and thinking of trying it, and now im super excited, and im thinking of getting her an LT 1917 in a color of her choice for late mothers day/her birthday since her birthday is in may also.
I had a moleskin softcover but it was stolen after only a few days of owning it, I have the opportunity to get a new notebook and I think I'm going to get a Leuchtturm1917 in navy. The silver lining to this suckish cloud is that since the moleskin was my first journal, I made big mistakes (I wrote September instead of January on my monthly spread. Yikes!) so know now I can learn and be more careful in my journal. Love your vids you're my bullet journal queen!
using a 2 poung spiral bound notebook from the work and some random art supplies for writing only started my bullet journal on the 19th of january 2017!! i think im doing pretty well
There are also Faber Castell Fineliners and they are awesome Cheaper but awesome they don't bleed through and the quality of the color is good. The one thing I can't get hold of is Tombow brush Markers
I personally chose to dive right into it using a cheap notebook. I'm not sure if the method is going to work for me so I'm learning as I go and I already see that I was right to do it this way. If I had waited for the "right" tools, I don't think I'd have started. At the same time, I can use it as a form of pre-planning, especially as I have learned the difference between a hard to follow weekly spread and an easy one :)
Thank you so much for this series. I am having so much fun going through this course and then putting the ideas into my own journal and into my life. I am going to go to Ryder's website. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to lay this all out. I have a couple of questions about the pens you use. 1. With the Tombow having dual tips, why do you also have the Staedtler fine liners? (not sure of the spelling) 2. Is a fountain pen really that nice to write with? The tips look like they would be rather scratchy.
In a few more days it's going to be 2019 and my goal for the new year is to start a bullet journal. I have been looking at videos over the past several weeks and getting more confused with each video. There's so much to think about and consider and many other videos where of their personal styles. Your series on bullet journaling 101 is a lifesaver. I would recommend watching this to anyone who is considering moving into bullet journaling for the first time. I'm so excited to purchase my journal today and start my pre-planning. You have made it into an exciting endeavor with your basics bullet journaling 101 instructions. I can't wait to get started!
Love your videos. I've always wanted to get into planning/journaling, but nothing seemed to fit my needs until I saw Amy Tangerine mention your videos and Ryder Carrol's. I'm "all et up" with cherry blossoms the past few years - is that a cherry blossom tat on your left arm? LOVE it! Though I'm embarrassed I can't really tell cherry from plum, etc. blossoms.
As for what notebook you should choose: I couldn't agree more to the "you can bullet journal on anything" point. I made my notebook myself out of some old needle printer paper (that stuff with holes in the sides that is just one continous band of paper) and the cover is just some 90 gsm drawing paper with something nice drawn on it. It is a bit time consuming to always make sure the lines are straight because I always have to reference the edge of the paper (which is obscured by the perforation marks) for it but it's ok. The paper is so thin you can see the silhoutte of your finger through it, and when writing with pencil, the bleed is manageable. Yes, pencil "bleeds" through. However, despite all that, it works fabulously as a bullet journal.
Loving the series. Thanks for sharing!! Your series have really help me out a lot. Just to let you know, I email Ryder and he is coming out with the bullet journal in more colors. Didn't say when.
Thanks! And, YES! I remember taking a survey on his site a little while ago asking about colors so I'm looking forward to those becoming a possibility soon :)
I am waiting as well!!! I can't wait for your next video. I am in the process of starting a bullet journal and your videos have been so helpful to me to help me how to start one. Thanks again for sharing!!
I was curious if you had a plan to dig into Indexing a bit more indepthly? I titled my Index pages but haven't been using them bc I'm not sure how to tackle organizing them. I'd love to see how you & The Tribe have handled it. LOVING this series! Thanks!
thanks for your video :) it's great but it's not what I expected for the pre planning part. I thought it would be something more like how to plan ahead in your bullet journal. I tend to prefilled my dailies and I know it's wrong because if I can't achieve everything in my day than I can't just push it to the next day but at the same time having an idea of how to organize my task that are not time specific in order to maximize my time in a week. I don't know if it makes sense haha thanks again for your video
Kara I'm doing the same thing in Jan I have a cute kitty kikki k that I bought and plan to go from leuchtturm to it and I'm very worried that I won't like it or I won't be able to make the transition. Are you worried. I also gutted it and put in my own dotted paper and layouts. thanks for the continued inspiration with your videos.
hi boho berry thanks a lot for your videos they are great but can I ask a question how do you use a bullet journal and another planner filofax together???
Also do you have a video explaining or showing how you keep track of your tips? I'm a hostess and I like to keep track of my tips but I'm not sure how I would do the layout for that. Thanks!
If you mean the square ones, those come with the Leuchtturm1917. If you're talking about the mandala one, she made that herself and sells them on her Etsy store.
Do you feel that the Faber Castell Pit pens last you a long time? They're slightly more than I'd like to pay for pens, but if they last a while I wouldn't mind as much
I have one question. What about for example... I have an exam next month and I need to put it on my bujo because if I dont, I'm going to forget about it, how do i do it?
I'm going o get my journal today asn start using it. How about adding a contact list? For times when you need that information but either there's no wifi or your cell won't connect or gets' damaaged?
I haven't been through all of your videos yet so I don't know if you've answered this but I need a breakdown of the planning for the next year since that will basically be my first page in my bujo. if you can direct me to the video or answer directly that would be awesome. I love your videos
I think you might be asking about the Calendex maybe? Sorry, I'm not clear. If so, I did a video about it right here: ua-cam.com/video/-c2NdTRw1gc/v-deo.html
Hmm.. This seems like material that would made ideal early spreads in your bullet journal instead of waiting. Or is bullet journaling to learn bullet journaling just too meta? :)
I tried to download the Reference Guide on tinyrayofsunshine, but the dropbox link won't load for the English translation. I guess I should contact them directly, but do you have another link that I could try?
is an A6 notebook enough to start a bullet journal? cause i have one new notebook on that size & really want to start bullet journaling (but also don't want to spend too much on a brand new A5 notebook) 😅 and A6 sized notebook is easy to carry too. thanks for your response
While I'm not Kara, I wanted to comment on this and say that the bullet journal has really kept me motivated in doing things that I usually procrastinate doing. It helps me set goals and achieve them. So while you might think that you have nothing in your life, you can make goals and add them to your journal (whether they are daily, weekly, monthly) and keep track of your progress. Some examples of this is that I have been wanting to paint more, but I keep pushing it off, or I want to complete Coursera courses that I lose track of. My journal helps me plan my life so that I can actually tackle these goals. I hope this helps give you ideas.
Check out gouletpens.com. He has a Fountain Pens 101 series (selection, maintenance, etc) and a youtube on EVERY pen, ink and notebook that he sells. Click the "Resources" heading.
Everytime I find myself falling off track in my journal or I am getting a new one soon, I always come back for a refresher here!! ^^
LOVE this video! It's a logical way to slowly swim towards the deep end instead of jumping into the deep end of bujo.
April Munday Lol, I know this is super old but that’s hilarious. I definitely can’t pronounce it!
Thanks for that, Marta! I'm off to check out that BuzzFeed post now!
I will check that out...as a chronic anxiety sufferer, I'm interested in including that as a part of my bullet journal.
Marta Oliveira thank you for sharing, I do before and after notes for my therapy and would like to track my progress.
Marta Oliveira I can't find that video. Can you post a link?
nykka3 not sure if you found it or not, but I did just found this one: www.buzzfeed.com/rachelwmiller/mental-health-bullet-journal?.gl3ed89x3k#.sjadQxJ7oV

You are an excellent educator! You have such a pleasant voice, such a delight to listen to you.
Just bought my first bullet journal, a Leuchtturm1917. I'm so excited to get started. 😀

Your video's have inspired me to start a BuJo. I started this month and I love it! Especially how creative you can be with a BuJo 😊
Hi Kara! Loved to see your very first BuJo! Learning so much from your experience and tips! Thanks for the classes and much love from Rio de Janeiro!
Thanks Eliane! It was fun to flip through that first journal and see how far I've come :)

You're welcome, Jacqueline! That fear of getting started is real! Hopefully some pre-planning will help you to feel more comfortable when you dive in :)
+Boho Berry oh my god i'm freaking out right now because you replied!!! thanks again so much, i love you!!!
Loving your Videos and the fact that so many of your supplies are from German companies so I can buy them all easily *_*
Your videos inspired me so much! You just revolutionized my bullet journal and made me be more relaxed and true to my way of planning. Please continue with the amazing work! :-)
Really excited for the college student tips!
loving this series so much ! brilliant tips :) x
Thanks, Andrea! :)
This is the best video you've ever posted.
Wanting to start my bullet journal for the school year, and this video has helped me immensely!!!
Thank you. I really appreciate your videos, as well as your blog. Very helpful for me as a rank beginner--I'd say that I'm in the pre-pre-planning stage.
Thank you for this video; VERY informative for a newbie. And yay, I just bought the Pilot MR Retro fountain pen....LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Oh my god I litterally used the same washi tape on my first bullet journal It litteraly looks the sane with the lettering and everything lol this gives me soooo much hope!!!
Thank you for such an in - depth series! You're a treasure for sure :)
Aw, thanks Mary! And you're welcome! :)
The Leuchterm 1917 A5 Dot grid is what i use!!!! I am in LOVE with it.

Your videos have really sparked my creativity! Thank you for your concise and insightful method of teaching BuJo ideas ❤️
You're very welcome, Erica! Thanks for tuning in :)
This is brilliant! Love your style of videos! I'm so glad I came across your channel ❤️

(not sure of the spelling)
2. Is a fountain pen really that nice to write with? The tips look like they would be rather scratchy.

Thank you for these videos!
Love the series......Thanks
You're so welcome, Alecesin! :)
love your nail color in this video! what brand is it?????
I was curious if you had a plan to dig into Indexing a bit more indepthly? I titled my Index pages but haven't been using them bc I'm not sure how to tackle organizing them. I'd love to see how you & The Tribe have handled it.
LOVING this series! Thanks!
Absolutely! I'll show you exactly how I decide what goes in the index and what doesn't :)
Awesome!! 👍🏻
thanks for your video :) it's great but it's not what I expected for the pre planning part.
Where do you get the stickers on the front cover of your bullet journals?
Also do you have a video explaining or showing how you keep track of your tips? I'm a hostess and I like to keep track of my tips but I'm not sure how I would do the layout for that.
Thanks!
If you mean the square ones, those come with the Leuchtturm1917. If you're talking about the mandala one, she made that herself and sells them on her Etsy store.
How do you create a perpetual shopping list?
Do you feel that the Faber Castell Pit pens last you a long time? They're slightly more than I'd like to pay for pens, but if they last a while I wouldn't mind as much
Do you have a video about creating the Calendex you referred to?
Hi Susan, I sure do! Here ya go! :) ua-cam.com/video/-c2NdTRw1gc/v-deo.html
Awesome!
Thank you!!!
what kind of journal (like leuchtturm or moleskine) do you recommend. I really would like to have a journal with good quality paper
I love your letters.
How do you do your reviews of your bullet journal?
Here is a video on how I did my mid-year review this summer: ua-cam.com/video/Oqb0ca1M7Tk/v-deo.html
thanks
are all your doodles freehanded or stamps?
Would I be allowed o bullet journal in a full-sized notebook? I don't have any of the little ones like the nice one you have.
Absolutely, you can Bullet Journal in any notebook!
is an A6 notebook enough to start a bullet journal? cause i have one new notebook on that size & really want to start bullet journaling (but also don't want to spend too much on a brand new A5 notebook) 😅 and A6 sized notebook is easy to carry too. thanks for your response
You can start in any notebook! If you work well with an A6 go for it!
Should I bullet journal even if I'm a loser with no life?
While I'm not Kara, I wanted to comment on this and say that the bullet journal has really kept me motivated in doing things that I usually procrastinate doing. It helps me set goals and achieve them. So while you might think that you have nothing in your life, you can make goals and add them to your journal (whether they are daily, weekly, monthly) and keep track of your progress. Some examples of this is that I have been wanting to paint more, but I keep pushing it off, or I want to complete Coursera courses that I lose track of. My journal helps me plan my life so that I can actually tackle these goals. I hope this helps give you ideas.
Exogenesys wow, thanks for that!
I'm happy to help. :)
_Especially_ when you think your life needs more structure bullet journaling is a great help :-)
I used to be a loser with no life, now I'm an organized loser with no life, so YES
Can you do a fountain pen 101?
Check out gouletpens.com. He has a Fountain Pens 101 series (selection, maintenance, etc) and a youtube on EVERY pen, ink and notebook that he sells. Click the "Resources" heading.
