    For everyone saying "why do you need to do this, it would be more productive to just do the task" that's great that your brain doesn't need it. Some people do. Personally, as someone with anxiety, who ruminates and worries about all the things she has to remember, bullet journaling this month has been MAGICAL for my mental health and productivity. If you don't need it, great! But don't shame people whose brains are just wired differently than yours.

      LifeWithNath Thank you for saying this. This is really helpful for those of us with Mental Illnesses to journal and plan because our brains lack the concept of timing and it helps a lot of us keep our lives organized. I love that you brought this to light! 💪💓

      When I was in school I failed most of my classes. I had to have a tutor and first thing she request me was to have an agenda or a notebook where I can organize everything -and I mean every-thing! Ever since I've considered it a basic in life, I left agendas a while ago for bullet journals, I think is just a much better solution for me.
      (I know it's a late answer but I think your point is relevant =p )

      I am retired and it is really easy to let things slide. I have found the bullet journal keeps me on track and I do the little jobs that can turn into a giant overwhelming jobs if not done often. Planning, cleaning, appointments, personal care, household duties and fun stuff. I track all those things now and find it is fun AND therapeutic. That being said, I don't think anyone needs a reason to bullet journal -- just do whatever floats your boat - there are no rules!

      its also a really fun way to keep track of your life or look back on who you were last year or the year before, even if you dont need it to help you be productive, we shouldnt be judged for the big or little things that make us happy. its us that has to live our own lives therefore we should do whatever benefits US and nobody should complain about that.

    I'm surprised by the number of negative comments about bullet journaling in response to this! It's definitely not for everyone, but it's not as time consuming as a lot of people think. It takes maybe an hour or two to set up, and then a few minutes every day to add in and track your daily tasks. It might not be as efficient as a digital calendar system but bullet journals are really great for practising mindfulness by forcing you to slow down for 15 minutes a day to reflect

    what I love most about this, is that i love the idea of not having a strict schedule or way the notebook has to be filled out, it's exactly what kind of note keeping that i've been looking to follow, so this is pushing me that much more to get organized again!

    I started bullet journaling when I first started college about a year and a half ago. At first, I kind of over-complicated things, and like you mentioned I spent so much time trying to make it look "pretty" (I'm a design student, so the pressure was all there) but as time went on, I simplified it more and more.
    Now my bullet journal works more almost as a diary and a simple week planner without all the fancy shmancy indexes and future logs and whatnot and it works so well for me. Bullet journaling is different for everyone and that is okay!

    • @Thebookrat
      @Thebookrat 7 років тому +51

      It's only as time consuming as you make it. That's my favorite thing about it, it's very versatile and adaptable, and because nothing is set in stone/in advance, you're able to try something, see if it works, and then try something else, etc, until you find something you love. It's the only system I've ever found that lets me put everything I need into it, and has made me want to stick with it for any length of time.

    Love my bullet journal! I have a minimal version similar to yours that has helped me so much over the last couple of years. I never got on with electronic diaries, the process of writing actually helps me to think and to organise. Plus I don't have stray notes and bits of paper when something doesn't fit into a pre-printed diary anymore! xx

    I've used the bullet journal method since 2012, before I even knew it existed, and it worked wonders for me. I was able to keep on top of university, a job, and volunteer work. I initially chose it because buying a notebook is a lot cheaper than buying a planner. This year though, I found a planner that is layed out the way I did my bullet journal, so I crossed over again (and it's gold, white, black, and pale pink; couldn't resist). We'll see how this works...but I'm really exited about it.

    I use my bullet journal ALL the time for work. As I've taken on more responsibility at work I've found it incredibly helpful when it comes to prioritisation, recalling meeting notes or project planning. I've searched far and wide for an electronic version but there is just something about writing things down that is incredibly satisfying! Mines far from pretty but I rely on it so heavily.

    I've been using the bullet journal system for around 2 years now, but it's required such considerable changes to fit my schedule in that I don't even think I could really call it a bullet journal! haha. It only really works if you have quite a bit of time.

      princesscharlott1983 I think people who use their planners with stickers and photos actually see their planner as a scrapbook diary thingy ! Like to sort of remember what they've done on a given day !

    • @kristyfletcher2416
      @kristyfletcher2416 7 років тому +10

      True, also we all have the same 24 hours in a day, it's what you decide to prioritize. Some people feel the need to take a bit of time to plan and organize and be arty with it, and some people just need a few seconds to jot down a note in their phone and be off. We are all living how we need to live :)

    Thanks for sharing this! I started bullet journalling in 2015 for a couple of weeks but I hadn't researched it properly and ended up giving up. I restarted again in December 2016 and have continued well so far as I took time to research and decide what I wanted from it. I love it! I feel so organised now! I loooved this video so much! I have a bullet journal but because I found notebooks very restrictive I started using a filofax planner for it.. And when it's filled up you just move the pages out into a different plain binder but you still get to keep all the things that you'd have to transfer from notebook to notebook !
    This was a very informative and simple video for people who don't know how to go about it!

    What I like about the bullet journal, is that there isn't any pressure to fill it all out so as not to waste it. With a planner/yearly journal where it's all set up for you, if you forget to make any entries for a while you've got this big empty chunk in your journal that you can't use anymore because those months are gone. Ofcourse you can just disregard the year and months and just use the paper but it's irritating if its a really lovely, pricey diary and youve not used it as best you could have. I'm about to start bullet journaling myself for this reason. So excited. :)

  • @ifeelshiny
    @ifeelshiny 7 років тому

    I've just started bullet journaling and have found it really helpful. I work in a normal office job and don't do my work planning for it but I've loved it so far just as place to put social events, meal planners, reminders and a way to see your year at a glance. You can make as arty or as simple as you like, and like lily I just fill in what I need in terms of calendar etc but then do it as I go. She's right, don't feel like you have to set everything up immediately and make it a work of art. I've also loved it for habit tracking and seeing at a glance how I've been doing with going to the gym, drinking alcohol and soft drinks, getting a good nights sleep, switching off from screens before 11. It's hard to explain because it's so personal but after a little time investment you can really make it work for yourself.

    Great video. Thank you! You have such a lovely voice to listen to. Well spoken and clear. Anyway, great advice. Without a bullet journal or planner I’d be totally lost and confused. Journals do organise your thoughts. We all lead such busy lives, so committing it all to paper is quite a relief and a type of therapy too. Ive been journalling in one way or another since I was 8 years old. (I’m 63 now). My paper and pens are like my breath of life. I’ll never be without them. I’m grateful I live in an age where so much paper “stuff” is freely available to us. We are so lucky. 💌📕💙🌟📗🌹📚📘📝📓❤️📃🖌📕📄💕📗🖌📖🌹🖊🖌🌟🥰📚🖊📓🤔

    I love that you're not super concerned with making it "arty" because that's what intimidates me about bullet journaling. I had one a couple years ago, well it wasn't a proper one. Anyways, I loved creating what worked best for me. You've inspired me to maybe use one for next school year!

    Lilly - I think this would be a great little miniseries. maybe one video a quarter, and one at the end of the year with how you liked your newer set up, learns from using it for the whole year, ideas you've had, etc. I think that could be cool and helpful for those of us starting out with Bullet Journaling as well. Hope you're having fun in SA. xo

    I was curious about bullet journals because you mentioned them quite often. I watched several videos and started my own this week. It works so well for my classroom and for getting small tasks done efficiently. I'm mainly using it for work but add a few personal things I want to remember. Thanks for sharing your video; I like mine simple as well (even though it looks beautiful with artistic flair). If any teachers are watching, I'd highly recommend it for them!

    I've been waiting for this video for ages. This was very helpful, it is interesting to read the comments and see different point of views on things, definitely reflective of the different ways people choose to store and use information. This is definitely my type of journaling. It definitely comes down to finding what works for you and then going with it. Thanks for filming xx

    Thank you so much for posting this video. I also want to keep it simple & was struggling to see how I would do that looking at all the beautiful, but very complicated layouts. I'm also a blogger and beginner UA-camr so seeing how you set up your planning really helped! 😍❤

    This was great. After you mentioned it on a previous video I spent ages looking through all the different videos. It's fantastic. I used to use so many different note books and now it's all in one. Thank you, it's made my life so much easier and less confusing 😄 xx

    This was very helpful. Because I don't do resolutions for the year anymore, I wanted to at least plan better for the year ahead since I have a tendency to let things sneak up on me that happen around the same time every year. This will be a great way for me to stay organized for all the big and small events coming up!

    I discovered "bullet journal" last year but decided not to do it because I didn't know how to incorporate it in my life as a notebook. So thanks for this video because seeing the example of how you did it and the things that did not work for you gives me a clearer idea of how I want it.
    I really love the video Lily! 😊 😊😊

    I've really been looking forward to this video! I first discovered the bullet journal through you, when you posted an Instagram post about it at the beginning of last year. Thanks so much for introducing me to the concept, Lily!
    I started one last year, but was super inconsistent with it. I saw all these beautiful, artistic bullet journals online and tried to do too much too soon with my own. This year, I've kept it far more minimalistic and am using it in a way that works for me. Really happy with it so far! I know it might look like a lot of effort and hassle to some people, but I really enjoy using mine - and I love the flexibility of it.
    I totally agree about the dotted pages! I used a blank notebook last year but switched to the Leuchtturm this year...and I was like, woah - been doing it wrong all my life!
    Really enjoyed the video, it was interesting seeing how you've set your one up. I love the simple, clean look of it. Love your videos generally, but I never get around to commenting. So I thought I would today! Have a good week :).

    You have really been killing it so far this year with content! Very good and clear video (although I do use a bullet journal myself so not a complete novice. This definitely inspired me to try a more minimal approach with mine.
