I worked on the camps in the mid 70's and I had the great delight of having a very alcoholic lunch with Mr Collier, Les Dennis, Dustin Gee, Jefferson Lincoln and other 'minor' comedians at the close of the site. I can safely say it is one of my most treasured memories, especially Norman, who did his chicken act of course, but crowned it all when he climbed on the table and did the car window sketch. My mother and grandfather were there, and he treated them like royalty. :) Thank you Norman.
My Mum and Dad took me to watch Des O'Connor Tonight being recorded live at Teddington Studios one evening; Norman Collier was on the show. Before we left home, we set the video to record the show. When we got back, we watched it - you could hear my Dad laughing in the audience.
You can’t beat old school comedy…Norman was just one of those nice genuine comedians just like your Les Dawsons of those times….what I find more amazing is that Norman had such a lovely voice .. I’m sure Norman would have also had a singing career back then if he took a different career path .. ❤
BBC and ITV socially-engineered the younger generations to want things different from preceding generations. The aim was not merely to kill traditional comedy, but, by manipulating the young over time, to change the British people’s values entirely. By now, those young people having become adults, parents and grandparents themselves, the job has been done.
These comediens will never be replaced, grear fun and entertainment , unlike todays comediens who darnt say anything funny in case they upset the pc brigade, English humor has been snuffed out thanks to narrow minded biggots who wont see the humor side of anything, according to them everything is either racist or insulting, what a life they must lead.
Norman Collier came round to our house one day down Rugby Street, Hessle Road. I was a child and was not in at the time but that was our claim to fame for a long while. He was related to the family in some way. RIP Norman. I never met you but I admire your talent in the tough working class northern environment at the time. Most famous for the chicken routine. Respect .
Not an F word is sight, and still way funnier than the so called comedians we have now who think they have to Fuck this, twat that, in order to make their act funny.
....the modern day al beebera ( or itv) would not find norman amusing and wouldn't put him on screen....never mind bernard.....not really an advancement in the 21st century
The thing with the faulty microphone was funny for about 2 minutes - but this guy was still trying to get cheap laughs with it 20 years later - didn’t exactly have a massive catalogue of material did he ?
Guess we can't love every old performer.. Norman does nothing for me.. Dont find him funny at all.. Dont get me wrong, many from this generation I do love.
Interesting how our tastes in comedy have changed, yet at the same time Billy Connolly was playing his brilliant act around the UK, yet this drivel was playing.
Norman Collier was 24ct comedy gold. A genuine comic genius. There really aren't enough superlatives to describe just how good he was.
I agree wholeheartedly.
