Maybe amongst the white supremacists of Leeds United - but everywhere else it’s an embarrassment- a guy who should know better pandering to a white crowd with jokes designed to ridicule black people - yeah legend!
Just saw Charlie at the Wheel Tappers New year evening show 1974 - such a funny man - IMDB states a quote which is genius - 'to a heckler during his stand-up comedy act, referring to racial prejudice against black people such as himself, 'If you don't shut up, I'll come and live next-door to you' . God bless you Charlie, how we could do with your smile in 2023....
Charlie was one of a kind. A dear friend of mine's dad enjoyed watching these comedy shows before he passed. May he rest in peace...the gentle Lion of a man.🌹
@@bigteno4597 I remember watching this on Tv in the 70s with my Dad, it was all good humour and entertainment. I can remember my Dad, laughing his head off, god bless him.
My dad worked at the local Working Men's Club. And I would go with Him, and put the Beer mats on the tables. I would meet the all the groups and Comedians, and singers, And every time Charlie came, He would always give Me a Demo copy of His latest Single, This being one of them. I still have them, all are signed as well. Plus all the ones from the Groups and singers that performed at the Club as well. Great days.
I can remember when the workies all got modernised and turned into venues with groups, comedians and dances. I was about 10 when ours went from an old man’s drinking club into an exciting venue. They had a Saturday afternoon dance for the kids, with a group playing. The twist was all the rage and my mother bought us autograph albums. We collected the autographs every week. Those were the days. Fond memories flooding back.
Just a lovely guy and good old style comic and former professional footballer he lived in the village of Cawthorne near Barnsley, he sadly died age 78 after a long illness in 2006
Ohhhhhh how I miss those days! Pity when in 2021 most folk I see are as miserable as sin a reflection on today's society when money means everything to most folk
God I miss those days so much, life was so much happier. We all liked to think we were comedians telling our favourite jokes in the club to our friends. Great days gone forever.
Saw him at Scarborough back in the 70's. The whole theatre was rocking. Nearly had a heart attack listening to him describing himself as a boy lowering himself into a tin bath. Remember him walking down the aisle to interact with the audience and as the punters craned their necks around to see what he was upto, he responded, "there's some reet' nosy buggers 'round here."
But he wouldn't, he'd have been just as funny and he'd have been happier too not having to tell jokes about black people to appeal to neanderthals like you.
I used to watch Charlie Williams who was one of the hosts of The Golden Shot as Norman Vaughn and Bob Monkhouse and Ann Ashton and Wei-Wei Wong were the hostesses on the quiz show as Wei-Wei Wong was the woman who was dancing to the group called Space as the tune was called The Magic Fly as I heard a woman called Dana singing on the show Please Tell Him That I Said Hello as I fell in love with this song 🎵 as I am dedicating this TV series called The Golden Shot to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
Charle was Barnsley’s finest and a true gent , he refereed a charity match and my local miners welfare club and us kids mobbed him , he signed autographs and had us in stitches laughing , RIP Charlie
Moggs, 1957, my first leave from the army, went with a pal to a place called Warsop, Notts, went to the local WM club, and who were the turn, Charlie Williams and Alec Jeffreys, but they were singers then.
A bit of Roses banter between Bernard and Charlie, who were good mates. Chubby Brown (another mate of Bernard’s) also started out in that era, winning New Faces and then he earned a fortune on the club circuit, being deemed too blue for telly. If Mary Whitehouse didn’t want to play with Chuck Berry’s ding-a-ling, then what chance did poor old Chubby stand? 😂 😂😂 All of the above were legends. In the days when you could have a proper laugh. Instead of having to listen to comedians (well, allegedly) with unpronounceable names, spouting B0/_/_OX and being about as funny as a fire at an orphanage.
Better days. Such a lovable character.
EVIL HAS TAKEN IT'S PLACE!
The days when nothing was taken seriously & everyone laughed at everything & everyone. Happy days.
So Charlie also did jokes regarding skin colour about white people then…?
I didn't find humour in anything in he said. But then again humour is subjunctive. He must have been popular in his time.
@@DraconiusLux he certainly was popular and more power to him, but I can’t help wondering if they were laughing at him rather than with him…
Never to Return Sadly
@@DraconiusLux At last, a snowflake in our midst. These great clips are even funnier now when these fragile petals are watching. Lighten up, mate!
A true Yorkshire legend. We love Charlie in God's county 😂

Only a Yorkshireman could have sung that song. Fantastic comedian and singer, a proper entertainer.
a true legend of real comedy ... this is what comedy was about before everyone took offence over nothing ..... its only a joke
I agree. You can’t say anything these days without someone taking offence.
Charlie was one of a kind. A dear friend of mine's dad enjoyed watching these comedy shows before he passed. May he rest in peace...the gentle Lion of a man.🌹
You are so right about that Amanda! I met him a few times back in the 70s, what a lovely, kind, funny man he was.
@@bigteno4597 Such an amazing memory. Hope that you have a wonderful night! Warm wishes from across the pond!😉

Great memories of 70s Saturday nights there. Thanks for this.
Great stuff, comedienne's like these guys are priceless,I'd watch them anytime, back in the days when comedy was funny,
Comediennes are female, I think you mean "comedians"......cluts!
Also comedienne's shouldn't have an apostrophe. The plural is comediennes.....cluts!
@@sevvy101 it's 'klutz', klutz.
Rip Charlie you was the best ... I ment him in Plymouth on hoilday easy too approach and chat too sadly missed by many fans
Great days .. so sad they’ve gone for good .. I hate this country today
What a lovely man , this sort of comedy is sorely missed
Yeah, it's got too politically correct now 🤐, people take themselves too seriously and play the victim too quickly 🤒
@@kevinruddy448 I'm sure you're a big fan of other luminaries of 70s "comedy" such as Bernard Manning?
By what, you and a few fellas in white hoods?
Fantastic. God bless them all. Happy days indeed.
Great Days … a joke is a Joke …. These men and women no doubt had huge respect for each other .. it takes great courage to get up on stage 👍
Balls of steel at go in front of a crowd like this and still get a giggle learnt over years modern comics look and learn
Crompton Manning and Williams..happy days 😂😂
Great comedian. I would have loved to see this man and showed him great respect..
Will Smith & Family needs to get a load of this... Charlie Williams has the most infectious laugh.
No screaming, no swearing, just trying to give the punters a fun night of laughter, today it’s all over analysed & try not to upset some “ minority “
What a great comic he was, good old school comedy when everyone wasn't offended by everything, rest in peace Charlie and thankyou for the laughter.
Ohhhhhh how I miss those days! Pity when in 2021 most folk I see are as miserable as sin a reflection on today's society when money means everything to most folk
Used to come in the transport cafe i worked in , lovely man, sure he got some jokes off lorry drivers
He was a lovely chap, God bless him ❤
I forgot how comedians used to do a song at the end of the show, loved this!
Never morose, Charlie Williams revitalised the British comedy scene, sending shockwaves that electrified Lenny Henry and Will Smith for decades.
Bloody brilliant 👏
Hardest part was getting outta bag........very good....it took me about 10 seconds before it clicked😅😅😅😅😅
Met Charlie at a do at the Belle Vue, DRFC - I’m a massive Rovers fan & Charlie played for us for 11 years in the post war era
Centre half , Alec Jeffreys centre forward.
He always said he wasn't the best player but he could stop the buggars that were
Great memories of the 70’s comedians but I always thought Charlie was one of the best.
He was always smiling..
comes across as a real nice bloke..

I'm nowhere near his age born in 62 and I had a bath in the kitchen Infront of the stove
I was born in 67 and I remember the tin bath on a Sunday night
Saw him at Batley Variety Club approx 1978. Hilarious.
Charlie, you were lovely!
👍👍👍 A better time , no PIN numbers and passwords ❤️❤️
A great comedian who was popular with everyone in the 1970s. He'd be cancelled by lefties these days.
But he wouldn't, he'd have been just as funny and he'd have been happier too not having to tell jokes about black people to appeal to neanderthals like you.
See him live, what a great comedian & man......
From a time when comedy and jokes were funny, thank goodness for YT
Charlie was brilliant very few good comics now Mick Timson
He is comedy gold and a beloved northerner ❤
Brought tears to my eyes. Lovely song.
Good comedian who could take as well as give a joke. Great stuff!!
Proper comedian real people all lost in the mists of time

The Golden Shot as Norman Vaughn and Bob Monkhouse and Ann Ashton

The so called alternative should be made to watch this as a lesson of how to be funny Charlie was a one off brilliant comedian
Hilarious! This is proper comedy! It's funny
I had forgotten what a good singer he was as well, of course, as a very funny man. Pity that no one emulates his style nowadays.
Charlie sold me some cockles in Skegness back in 77. The only time I got a big tub because he said to my dad ‘get Im a biggun Fatha’.
Can hear him saying it.. 👍 A ledgend.
One of my Dad’s & us as a family’s favourite comedians
This was the good old days I just remember mum and dad
Complete classic comedy 70s
A great comedian was Charlie
I well remember Charlie playing for Doncaster Rovers against Swansea Town at The Vetch Field back in the mid/late 1950's. Centre half I think.
Moggs, 1957, my first leave from the army, went with a pal to a place called Warsop, Notts, went to the local WM club, and who were the turn, Charlie Williams and Alec Jeffreys, but they were singers then.
Charlie loved him and the Barnsley accent ...lived there for a while and this is exactly their sense of humour 😄 funny bones this Guy .
Classic and a legend always made me laugh 😃 😀 😄 😁

My father played golf with Charlie, said he was just as funny off stage.
