Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I had hyperpigmentation show up really suddenly after starting a new antidepressant. I tried just about everything that I could find over the counter and the results were pretty limited. I was pleasantly surprised when I was finally able to get botox for chronic migraine and within a week the hyperpigmentation was basically gone (or at least like 90% gone). Definitely doesn't qualify as holistic, but I'm really happy with the resulting decrease in headaches and dark spots.
I had malasma, dermatologist did a glycolic peel and the patch strpped off in one week. It was an emotional experience, my face is now clean..I struggled with this for years.
I use his products and I noticed by using a razor to remove the peach fuzz from my face so my makeup sits on the skin and not on my peach fuzz, my age spots have faded because like the dr said, removing the upper layer of skin helps the age spot removing agent work by getting to the spot easier.
If you’re asian with olive skin stay away from IPL. My sister and I had great results with our first couple of treatments. Basically your dark spots get crispy and fall off like scabs but return after a few months. After our third treatments (they increase the intensity of your treatments), we noticed patches of dark spots appearing where there were none before. It’s been a couple of years and the new dark spots (patches) caused by IPL are still there. Surprisingly my original dark spots have faded, almost disappearing completely. I’ve been using various brightening serums but the key was adding a glycolic peel mask to my weekly routine.
I believe you...thanks! Im asian and use retin-A and Vitamic with peptides. Also a gel called " out of sight" dark spot gel. Im gonna add the gycolic peel mask
I've had some success over last 10 weeks with age spots on my face esp on nose with castor oil , I made a poltice type bandage over the oil on my nose each morning and night and rubbed some in face before sleep , amazing results really❤
I started using lanolin (nipple cream) and my dark eye circles were reduced by 90% within 5 days. I am able to go make up free now. I used ALL of the hyperpigmentation treatments with no noticeable improvement. Lasers, hydroquinone, niacinimide, glycolic acid (laroche's - this seemed to do a little something), vitamin c, retinoid, and multiple eye creams. I was on a 6 month struggle bus trying to treat this. I ordered nipple cream for lips and decided to see if putting it on my dark eye circles and hyperpigmented smile lines would work. I woke up the next morning and had a 60% reduction. By the end of the week, I had a 90% reduction in the dark eye circles. The dark smile line is completely gone on 1 side of my face. I've had dark eye circles my entire life. I have baby pictures with dark eye circles!!! 😂😂😂 I have no idea why the nipple cream worked but praise be! Instant success.
As someone from the Sahel region of Africa, the semidesert climate is very brutal for the skin. Most of the products that work for hyperpigmentation and anti-aging makes the skin sun sensitive. Which can be a horrible experience because the sun is super hot here.
I've learned that doing too many kinds of exfoliating treatments on your face is never good for your delicated skin. It only makes your skin thinner and become more sensitive to UV light, especially for Asian olive skin
ASIANS- Be cautious and research if you’re thinking of getting IPL treatments I was happy with my first 2 treatments but then after my 3rd treatment some new spots showed up and some spots that were already there got darker. Maybe if I continued having treatments the spots might have eventually gotten lighter but that would take time and a lot of money. So I was left with my skin looking worse than before I had the IPLs! Fraxel laser treatment is another treatment I would pass on. Generally speaking Asians and other darker skinned people are more at risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after laser treatments. I wish I knew this before my treatments
I’m Asian and had 2 sessions of IPL done. I have a fair skin but the IPL worsen my dark spots. My dermatologist was honest enough to tell me that Asian skin are hard to treat with skin hyperpigmentation. He prescribed me tretinoin 0.05% but the result took years to clear.
I’m having my third of three light treatments at my med spa next week, I’ve been thrilled with the results in getting rid of age spots! I’ll maintain with topical vitamin C and tretinoin.

Hi I really love your channel, I’m 57 I’ve got pigmentation on my cheek bone it’s driving me mad. I’ve heard caster oil is great definitely going to try that.
Hi the caster oil has made a big difference to my skin overall stopping any dryness. I’ve used honey mixed with paprika. Applied that to my face like a mask, that lighted the pigmentation on my right cheek. For sure. Going back to the caster oil I found applying it to my eyelids made my lines look less obvious and stoped dry eye condition I had and my eyes from running when they got dry in the winter month’s. .

You are correct Dr. that would be my case. I literally lived at the beach and on a boat in my younger years and decades later is when I'm getting spots thank you so much for this video. I don't have many they are on my arms mainly and one of my forehead.
My mother used to say, "When you get old, your skin sprouts weeds." Now I'm at that age and boy, she was right! It seems lately every day is a new surprise. As an adult, I've always avoided the sun, but like you mentioned, I was in the sun a lot as a child and it's showing. I'm light skinned but have a quarter-sized melasma right in the middle of my forehead which embarrasses me so much. I was thinking maybe a light colored tattoo would work if nothing else would, though I first have to win the lottery even for that. Thank you so much, Dr. Youn, for your very interesting information!
I found this serum called the Princess Skin Brightening & Rejuvenating Serum treatment and this lady used it in conjunction with her hyperpigmentation routine for melasma. I was on reddit forums for melasma and a lady recommended it. It's freaking amazing, no irritation or smell. I love it. She said it helps lighten it up her melasma alot.
That’s how my melasma started. Smack in the middle of my forehead. I regret not being more aggressive with research and treatments. It spread to 80% of my face and the struggle is real.
I have pigmentation on my face but it only looks hideous when my face gets too tanned oe a bit sunburnt. So i make sure to try keep my face out the sun as much as possible and that had been quite effective so far (i work outdoors in a warm climate. So its lots of sunblock and hats and trying to get out the midday sun). Thanks for the great vids
I was on a glycolic acid cleanser made by m.d. forte. It was discontinued. So now that I'm 49 years old, I'm getting a prescription for Retin-A or Retin-A Micro. It's really the only thing that works with my skin type. I have hyperpigmentation on my cheeks.
Hello I always enjoy your posts. I have read a few articles suggesting IPL makes Malasma worse and stimulates hyperpigmentation? I have a mixture of both presenting during perimenopause and now menopause . I was wondering if you would create a clip in the future targeting this and how to better transition your skin care during these changes 😊
I would love to learn about this as well. As a person of color, I have been told lasers were off limits for melasma. I would love to know if there is a safe one.

I have a BUNCH of hyperpigmentation on my neck, creating a weird "ring" with a more whiter patch in the middle. I'm some of it's from sun damage, but because it IS "patchy," I'm wondering if it's melasma. I had a very bad burn in my teens (I should have gone to the hospital but didn't), and I also am getting lots of "age spots" as well, especially on my face, and it's very distressing to me. So this is helpful.
Hi Jekku how are you, and how is the hyperpigmentation on your neck, has it already faded away now? If they’ve faded/gone, may I know what treatment and/or any type of cream you used? I had the exact same thing, some white patches on my upper arm surrounded by dark rings/edges, but they appeared after I had some moles removed on my upper arm by cautery and followed by vbeam laser. I kept the affected areas moisturized, I used a CeraVe moisturizing cream for almost a month and now the white patches are all almost gone but the the dark rings/spots are still there even though it’s not as dark as before. I’m Asian with IV skin type/ medium skin tone
Thank you for this! I spent a week in Hawaii and even SLATHERED in sunscreen, I’ve come back with so much hyperpigmentation. Especially on my arms. Would you recommend the same for body? Or is there any body products you recommend? Thanks!
Because of the damage done in my youth, the spots on my face turned up in my 50’s. Common spots are from the car windows or any windows in fact. I had to go to the dermatologist to have series of chemical peels to lighten the spots and other damage to my skin. Last year @ 59 I had skin cancer, regardless at what age the damage will come to the surface. I use sun screen everyday wait 5 to 10 minutes put on moisturizer then daily treatments. Sunscreen 1st no matter before going outside. If I could turn the clock I would take my parents advice, too late now. How to look younger stay out of the direct sun.❤️😊

I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and my skin pigmentation is all over the map. I get a lot of blisters from PMLE, and these or any very superficial injury leave hyperpigmented spots. But if my skin is broken deeper, those spots wont tan. My face is so awful now, because i had a severe case of poison ivy about 5 years ago - where it was on my face doesnt tan, so i look like i have melasma, but it's really the opposite of melasma. Meanwhile my arms, neck and back are riddled with dark spots from the hyperpigmented PMLE blisters.
Wow don't come across persons with EDS I have a very high probability of having EDS my kids and grandkids all have it. Being 73 nobody tested anything way back when? Now that I'm old, they kind of say you're too old for us to put that much effort in to do all the testing. Yet I have all the markers.Know quite a bit about it as I was getting ready for eye surgery to have a cataract remove and found out Cataract candidates with EDS can really have some complications. That can really cause a lot of problems. Finding physicians who understand this condition is very difficult where I live. It's taking me. About 2 yrs search to get the right doctor to operate on my eyes. And I'm still not certain that this man could handle the problem.😒
so helpful for this video doctor...I was using hydroquinone for 7yrs..when I stopped my face became dark..i have tried laser too but my face still the same 😢
Not to be THAT guy, but the IPL does technically contain chemicals. Maybe not toxic or harmful chemicals, but chemicals nonetheless. Even light and water are a result of a chemical reaction. I know that the word "chemical" is used in everyday language to mean toxic, but I honestly think we should erase that meaning as it leads to the incorrect assumption that chemical = bad.
I put Thompson Vitamin C powder 5000mg in a brown/blue dropper bottle with distilled water and shake. Use small amount of Vit C powder and increase amount as your skin adjusts. Apply to face, arms, shoulders, backs of hands, anywhere you want to lighten spots. It removed a freckle from the tip of my nose! I should add I have a Trophy Skin microdermabrasion MD machine at home that I use 3 times a week.
I had a small patch of hyperpigmentation (still have it) under my left eye, extending horizontally towards the bridge of my nose. Coincidentally, I have macular degeneration in that eye and have major sinus problems, especially in my left sinus cavity. One day I got so tired of the sinus problems that I was determined to kill whatever was up there. First I tried hydrogen peroxide. I took a 5ml syringe, leaned over, and plunged it up there. It burned, and I got really stuffy. So my doctor gave me doxycycline, notably, an antibiotic that cautions one to avoid sun exposure. I eventually got blocked on that side again. So then I decided to use povidone iodine, diatomaceous earth, and fenbendazole. Did the same thing, leaned over, moved my head side to side and backwards, held it there, hummed really hard, pounded my forehead. I got so much stuff out of there. A lot of yellow mucous, even some that had green fuzzy stuff on it. I did this several times a day for 6 days. The miracle was that I could, not only breathe again, but I was able to sing again after a botched vocal cord removal surgery. (They had hemorrhaged the good cord putting the breathing tube in.) All of what I was doing BURNED, like really BURNED. . The povidone iodine stained my teeth, too. Not long after, wintertime, I noticed what I wasn't sure was more hyperpigmentation or shadowing on my left cheek further down. I looked in the car mirror in daylight and noticed that it was MORE pigmentation. Eventually, from repeating this ritual periodically, I developed pigmentation all over my sinus cavities, both sides. The area under my left eye, where I get really blocked was darkest, but there was hyperpigmentation even above my brows. I can literally trace my sinus cavities now by following the hyperpigmentation. I saw an ENT, and she blew it off. I honestly believe there is something, some microbe in my sinuses, that is behind the spread of this hyperpigmentation. I wish I could post a picture. My ritual still helps, but not as much. Any thoughts? I noticed my neighbor has a huge area of hyperpigmentation on her left cheek, and I'm willing to bet she has really bad sinus issues on that side. Again, thoughts? One more observation is that the psoriasis near my buttocks/thighs went away on the doxy, and doxy is used for both sinus infections and IBD, which I also have.
If you don’t already know, tretinoin is strong and it does work but after about a year or so, your skin gets used to it and they might recommend a compound medication with hydroquinone and kojic acid etc but it’s not bad just don’t use more than a small pea size mixed with a big pea sized moisturizer

Do u use an at home peel? If so, which brand?

I agree!
Just use one time a week will be fine
ASIANS- Be cautious and research if you’re thinking of getting IPL treatments
I was happy with my first 2 treatments but then after my 3rd treatment some new spots showed up and some spots that were already there got darker.

I should add I have a Trophy Skin microdermabrasion MD machine at home that I use 3 times a week.
Castor oil is natures Botox- it’s soooo good for the skin!!
It is so bland I doubt it does much .
Castor oil has high toxicity.
(They had hemorrhaged the good cord putting the breathing tube in.)
All of what I was doing BURNED, like really BURNED.
What ate your thoughts of Trentinon .05%. My dermatologist suggested to help lighten dark spots on face.
If you don’t already know, tretinoin is strong and it does work but after about a year or so, your skin gets used to it and they might recommend a compound medication with hydroquinone and kojic acid etc but it’s not bad just don’t use more than a small pea size mixed with a big pea sized moisturizer
Snapping a rubber band on your face hurts a lot. So does that light facial. Imagine the sharpest rubber band pop on your face over and over and over.
Very informative I would be interested in looking into your products❤
