  • The Specialized Stumpjumper EVO is an extremely popular mountain bike, and we're consistently helping our customers with upgrades on these bikes. So I (Mike) built up a Stumpy EVO to ride and better assist customers with their questions. Tons of people ask if a coil shock will increase the performance of their bike, so in this 3 part video series we aim to answer the question "Should I put a coil shock on my Stumpjumper EVO?"
    In this first part of the series, I install a coil shock on my Stumpy EVO and go through the process of using a spring calculator and sag measurements to find a "starter spring" for this new coil shock setup.
    Subscribe so you don't miss out on Part 2 and 3 where I ride it and review how it feels!

    Nice. When I upgraded my stumpjumper I asked the specialized people if a coil shock would be okay to use. The guy that I spoke to with did not advised to do so because it not really designed to be used with a coil shocks. Also, there are stumpjumper owners that have had shocks that snapped. I think it is just how the suspension lay out is of the stumpjumper. With that I picked a DVO topaz and onyx as an upgrade. 😊 Thanks for this helpful video 😊

    The strut mount layout is definitely a killer. I was running my air shock at 30% sag (prob too much) on a short travel stumpy and broke the damper shaft on a hard bottom-out.

      agreed, every other bike including Specialized Enduro, Status, Levo, etc... all got a shock at centerline. This off center skewed shock design sucks. I do love my evo though, just wish they would redesign and fix it.

    can't wait for the second part :) besides the side-to-side stiffness (or lack of it), what about the progression? I have close to zero knowledge there, but I heard multiple times the stumpy suspension design works better with progressive shocks.

    Early SJ Evo's came with the DHX2 and there were tons of failures. My SJ Evo Pro came with the coil stock, I had 2 rides before mine blew up. Sent it to Fox for warranty service and they advised not to use their coil shocks on this frameset. Replaced with a factory DPX2 at the time and haven't had any issues in the 2 years since and thousands of miles.

    The main problem for me is to choose right size. I am between 5′ 9″ and 5′ 10″ and not sure what to choose S3 or S4. Specialized size calculator chose for me S4, but I am afraid that it will be a little big for me(reach is 470 mm.). Also I can't find these sizes to try it.

      Same. I just put a CL on my Evo and I really like it. I'm on the heavy end (235 geared up) so RS doesn't make a coil strong enough for my situation :( I'd need a spring in the neighborhood of 800#.

      Yo I did the CL and Push coil combo on my Stevo (not recommended by Push) and its pretty damn sweet. Super supple off the top but not bottoming out much at all now (with a 50lb bigger coil on it though). It does make it a worse climber in my opinion though, more supple has led to more pedal bob.

Bike 21kg + rider 97kg + backpack 6kg. More flowy trails than jumping - sure - but it seems rigid as f. yet it does take out uwanted bumps well! I've smashed a rear hub to bits and cracked a frame bolt with the shock on so I haven't been riding gentle. I weigh 180lbs and run a 550lb spring for reference. Also running a full 27.5 alloy frame which may or may not make a difference on how much side loading makes it to the shock.

    Lots of good info for people thinking about running a coil on a Stumpjumper Evo. I ran an Ohlins coil on a Stumpjumper Evo with a Cascade link for a year. It worked pretty well but I'd say the bike isn't ideal for a coil because of the yoke and high leverage. Heavy riders (over 200lbs) beware. On the Stumpy Evo I had to run a 674lb spring! A number of people I know also broke their coil shocks in half on Stumpjumper Evos. It's a great bike but I ended up selling in favor of a bike optimized around coil shocks and high volume air shocks.

      Seems like the stumpjumper geometry makes it really hard to use any coil shock. Their enduro bike that uses a coil shock is a special shock made for that bike, and its in the lower part of the frame instead of the upper part. It's still horizontal instead of vertical like other frames have. Now i'm glad I got a Fuel EX gen 6 instead of this bike since it doesn't have that problem.

    Your calculator seems set up for Horst Link and VPP bikes and would be way too stiff for DW link or single pivot bikes. At least based on a comparison to the TF Tuned calculator which has rates for both 4bar (Horst) and DW link setups. For the Evo which is Horst link it should be close though.

      We made a whole separate video going over all of the specific specs of the shock and why we're huge fans of it. As for the size, it depends on your bike! Every bike is designed around a specific rear shock sizing, and it's super important to get the exact size your bike is made for. You'll be able to find that on the manufacturer's website and usually isn't dependent on frame size, but sometimes it is and that'll be made clear on the website. 😎

      @@mrvwbug4423 Thanks for the info man. It still seems like a pretty sketchy suspension design to me since most shocks are not designed to handle an excessive amount of lateral stress.

      My Push 11-6 has been awesome on the Stevo!... it's definitely not worth their new asking price though. I'd just buy one used or get an EXT. I think Cascade Components will give you a deal if you buy the link and shock together, plus they tune it to fit the new link.

      This is one of the reasons why Evo owners who convert to coil use the Cascade Link. It makes the leverage curve more progressive, but it increases the leverage ratio to almost 3.4:1 off the top which means you need an even heavier spring than normal. I'm running the CL with an air shock and had to add about 40psi more air to achieve the same sag as before.

    • @Eric.V.
      @Eric.V. Рік тому

      @@pauld1848 It’s cool that you can modify it like that! However, at some point does it just make more sense to move up to a beefier enduro rig or something else that’s designed to play well with a coil?

    • @pauld1848
      @pauld1848 Рік тому

      @@Eric.V. Agree, except in my case I'm 6'8" and the Enduro isn't made in my size. Also, doing a CL on the Evo doesn't really make it pedal much worse and owners would have the option to swap a coil for days in the mountains and back to air for pedaling the trails.

    Terrible idea. This frame has a very long yoke and side-loads the shit out of all shocks, which is something that coil shocks are very susceptible to because if their smaller-diameter main shaft.
    Rockshox/SRAM even say that the Superdeluxe Coil isn't compatible with the Stumpjumper Evo because of the yoke.
    The only coil shocks anyone should put on any yoke-equipped frame are the Öhlins TTX2 (because it is available with spherical bushings), EXT Storia (same) and the DVO Jade X (because it's got a very large diameter main shaft and is less susceptible to buckling).

      Outdated info, and the Jade X is not compatible. Also, while it is advertised as compatible, lots of people have problems with the TTX2 on this bike. The MY 2023 SDU Coil has been updated as being compatible for this application per RS.

    Unless you were just giving an example of what NOT to do..

      Haha, I wish it was that simple! Weight doesn't directly correlate to spring rate in most cases. For example, I might use a 300 pound spring on a DH bike and then a 600 pound spring on a short travel trail bike.
