One thing you should mention regarding shock fit/compatibility is that, in general, the orientation of the shock does not matter - either the front/back orientation or flipping it vertically. The dynamics are identical independent of the orientation. It may look a little odd, but you can fit some shocks with piggyback reservoirs in more bikes this way.
Coincidentally, I called with some of these questions on the same day this was posted and I can attest to the fact that the virtual hand-holding was incredibly helpful. Thank you.
One point I've noticed for choosing between air and coil can be rider weight, which is especially important for very tall riders (i.e. people at the very limit of XL/XXL frame recommendations). Thanks to maximum recommended air pressures, air shocks have a maximum weight limit before sag simply becomes too much to ride with. With a coil shock, on the other hand, sag is dependent on the spring weight, and there are plenty (or at least enough) 700+lb springs available that would work for people too heavy to run air shocks.
The more complex a rear suspension system is, the harder it is to upgrade to a better, compatible shock that is tuned or can be tuned the proper way. Then again, this is a great guide, thank you very much!
I've been looking for the explanation given in 6:20 for like 2 weeks now, this is the third time I've found the information needed in your channel thank you!... besides you explain this in terms understandable for a mortal mtber like me.
I over-stroked my yeti during a lunch ride. Not only did my longer stroke length feel amazing for me but but it felt better for others as well. Finally with a longer stroke length I’m now able to stuff some shoots I’d never be able to reach the bottom of previously. It feels awesome ! 😜 but for the best feels...I'd highly recommend over-stroking your shaft while simultaneously under-tickling your seat tube.
Good point. Most videos talk about eye to eye sizes and stroke, but rarely somebody talks about the rear shock simply do not squeeze into my frame. I was negatively surprised when my new Fox shock did not fit due to LV and SV size difference. And there is very little info about that in general. Frequent rare issues, yes.
Wow, I saw the link to the new version on your old video, but I did not expect the new video to have literally come out today. What a coincidence, I suppose this is destiny
Really helpful video, Bought a frame with a busted Rockshox Ario and didn't know what to get until that whole part about what I felt was missing. Now I find myself in another rabbit hole trying to find a good and not wallet destroying 165mm rear shock.
Ohlins has a setup guide which advises which of their shock options are recommended for your specific frame and your rider weight.... it even gives you recommended volume spacer numbers and pressures......
I overstroked my giant trance... but I experimented a lot and ended up with a 2.5mm travel spacer over the stock 6mm spacer. With no contact under harsh bottom out/frame flex. Probably could have gone the full 6mm if I had been willing to live without the piggyback.
Have a 2020 Speicalized Levo SL with a FOX FLOAT DPS Performance, 3-position adjustment, 52.5x210mm, Rx Trail Tune and looking for something more tuneable and having less stiction. Assume the new FOX Float X will fit my Levo SL. Did get a FOX 36 Factory Fork from you a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. Now, need to bring the rear shock of my bike up to the level of its new fork.
As always great information, very informative (in a way a five-year-old could understand) which is exactly what I needed. My only question: When exactly did Jack Black join the Worldwide Cyclery team?
Bought a 11-6 for my size S SB130 and had one of the high speed damper knobs take paint off the inside of my downtube. Push swapped out the knob with a low profile preset knob for free, but I wish they would have told me about this issue as they said they knew about the issue beforehand.
This is excellent thank you. I have an ohlins on my 2016 specialized enduro pro carbon and the seals are blown. It won’t hold pressure beyond a few days. Starting to look at replacement options.
Depends. Most of the time it would result in your tires rubbing to the seatpost especially when the axle path is forwards. At most, you can only get 20mm of wheel travel before you run into trouble and that's with backwards axle path.
@@SneakyB exactly! cause there are bike like the yeti which from factory offeres 2 versions the normal and the lunch ride which is just over shocked... or like my bike which is an intense primer (first gen) that you can go to a 200x57 shock and it gets you to 140 mm of travel that said it does require the "recluse link" to safely do this
Well.....color me disappointed. I saw the first chapter and saw "Eye-to-Eye-----Stroke----then, Mount" and thought I was going to see a whole different type of flick. :-D Great video on shocks! Keep up the work.
Fox service website section, type in the 4 letter code on your current fox shock , and it will tell you the size and stroke , and what bike it came on. Such as KTM Prowler 230x65
That feeling when there's sale and they have every size, except yours. Tip on newer Fox shocks, use the ID printed to the shock. Should have all needed info.
When you find your measurements its written out like this e.g. 190x50mm or 7.5x2in (Eye length x Stroke length). You guys didn't mention that part. Now its easy to search which shocks are even compatible with your frame.
Awesome vid! You guys talked about over stroking but didn’t talk about under stroking. Is there a particular threshold that’s OK to move forward with. Specifically, i have a 190x51 shock on my bike (OEM) and am looking to replace and options I like only have 190x50. Is 1mm actually going to have significant impact in performance?
I'm probably a little late, but I have a question. So, my MTB came with a cheap coil shock that has a 170mm eye-to-eye, but for some reason they're hard to find. So, can I replace it with a better one, even if it's a bit bigger, like a 175mm?
One thing that has been a major point of confusion regarding compatibility: how does shock tune have to do with it? For example, I have a rascal with the stock super deluxe select. I've been considering getting something with more knobs or a coil or something in the long term. But even if I wanted to just buy a super deluxe ultimate which the bike can come stock with, can I just buy one and slap it on the bike or do I need to take it somewhere to get it tuned like it would be from factory? If I don't, what problems can I run into?
Most of the time when looking for a new shock going with a Medium Compression and Medium Rebound tune will be very close or exactly what the stock bike is spec'd with. There are a few shocks that are tuned pretty far out from that spec so to be sure I would contact the frame manufacture, or look up what the stock shock is by entering a code online or calling the manufacture of the shock and giving them the serial number. For a Rascal you can do the M/M tune of an off the shelf shock and it will feel great. If the bike has a really specialty tune then I would contact the brand or a shock manufacture for more info.

My 2014 Santa Cruz Tallboy LTc with a Cane Creek double barrel air shock only requires 140 psi to support my weight, but my 2020 Ibis Ripmo with a Fox Float X2 requires over 300 psi! Why do I need twice the pressure on such similar bikes?
Hi worldwide Is it possible for you to make a video on how to allign the circular washers when reinstalling shocks and pivot bolts. I am finding it extremely difficult to do
Yes. The stroke is directly related to how much travel the bike will have. So you absolutely have to get that right. If your stroke is less, you will have less travel. If your stroke is more, you will have more travel, potentially allowing the rear wheel of the bike to smash into the seat tube or the linkage to smash into itself. So in other words, it is imperative to get the stroke right.… That last part is also what she said.
