I love making scrap blankets as well. Great way to use up left over yarn. Nothing goes to waste. 🙂 I also make beanies and scarves from scrap yarn and then donate them.
Great ideas! My daughter teaches 4th grade. Each year I crochet hats, ear warmers, or headbands for her students. This year, it was ear warmers for the boys and cute headbands for the girls. She plans to give them out just before Christmas break. What started me doing this a few years ago was because of one girl in her class. My daughter has a prize box in her class. Students meeting certain goals get to choose a prize. One year, I had crocheted a hat with a poinsettia on it and gave it to her for the prize box. A little girl chose it and wore it every day, even in the summer! The next school year, my daughter said, "Mom, you remember the little girl who wore that hat every day? I saw her coming down the hall today and she had that hat on!" I just couldn't get it out of my mind how much that hat meant to her. So each year, I make something for all her students. She team teaches 2 groups so it averages over 40 students. I am so blessed to be able to do this for them. I recently pulled out several skeins of yarn and made items I donated to my mother-in-law's church for an upcoming fair they are having. I feel like God blessed me with the ability to crochet to give to others. It brings me peace and joy.....fruits of the spirit.
Hi Julie! I was gifted so much yarn years ago...and recently even more! With a lot (not all!) of the first batch, I made hats and scarves for the HER Shelter in our city. It's a battered women and children shelter. I filled up a new bin and donated it to them. Now I have even more yarn, and I would like to do some granny squares and make lap quilts (crochet blankets!) to donate. Yes, I also quilt (donated fabric also!) and I have about 30 of those to donate. I would like to add some crochet ones to that stack!☺I enjoyed listening to you give ideas about what to do with the yarn leftovers, but now I do need to go find a granny square pattern that I can sit and do when I watch TV in the evening!☺Thanks for your enthusiasm! I'm sure others were inspired to go find leftover yarn!🤗☺
I love this share and I especially love the ideas you give for donations. I have donated to nursing homes before but never thought about childcare centers. My grandson forget his blankie one day and my poor daughter in law had to leave work and drive it over to him!! Thank you for sharing your talent and your ideas.
I enjoy your videos so much, Julie! I belong to a “buy nothing” group in my community and when I asked for blue yarn to make hats for hat not hate, people were so generous! So if folks want yarn, there are a lot of people who will give you yarn to scrap create morning noon and night! I’ve also sent off items to a group in North Dakota. You have inspired me to start a new WIP a scrap/BUB that’s not really a BUB 😂
I’m actually working on 3 scrap blankets, 2 of which are in the shape of the 9 point and 12 point star. I’m loving how the colors are actually coming together. Absolutely agree with you on this
Agree! Agree! Agree! You already know I love to make scrap blankets. I love color and I love using up those BEAUTIFUL single skeins too! ( I really need to move that video I made from my makeup channel over to the fiber one, LOL.). I love the granny stripes and miter squares idea! I need to try that! Thank you for the ideas. 💕 Great to see you!! xoxo
Hello I love to hear that someone other than me loves to crochet and donates. I have made like you said throw blanket Aand I raffled it to donate the money for a single father taking care of his young son with cerebral palsy in Juarez Mexico. I’m here in El Paso Texas and love to do it. Thank you
I love making scrap blankets.I'm a cat.I'm makes scarves flap blankets.I'm make to take to the nursing home where my mother was.I just love it and I love variegated yarn too
Thanks so much for the inspiring video. I've been looking for somewhere to donate my makes since I moved last year and now it's time to get off my butt and find one. I make things for WINGS as much as possible but I love making blankets like you! Thanks Julie and keep up an occasional video so we can see you smiling face! Love you girl!
I have two different scrap blankets going; one for worsted weight and one for lighter weight. I use a C2C moss stitch pattern as my go-to for scrap blankets. I make small, lovey size blankets and donate them to Operation Christmas Child.
I was so pleased to see you on! I've been accumulating little balls of yarn to make something. Lol I do find myself fishing through my tiny ball stash for my amigurumi. 😀 You inspire me to keep creating for donation.
So I L❤️VE scrap blankets so much that I actually go out and buy new yarn cut it up as if it was made of scraps ! As soon as I see a new blanket or Afghan pattern that I haven’t tried before, I totally make a mini version out of my spare scrap yarn first! I challenged myself once to make the most ugliest BUB ever, even that atrocious thing became my youngest sons lovey❤️
I love your new ideas. You are very creative. Please display more of the of the straight across stripes in different colors, and the ripple colors across the afghan in different colors. The third, would you please display your mitered blankets, and your designer's technique for making them. You are really a fantastic designer! Can't wait for your 'answer' to this plea for help.
Aww! Thank you, Barbara! I’d love to help in any way I can. Are you looking for more information on those types of stitches or tutorials? Let me know! 😊
Project Linus takes donations for blankets - preemie to teen, boy or girl, knit, crochet, or sewn. I have donated 40 knit and crocheted blankets so far - more coming. Check for a Chapter near you.
If I have a partial skien left and I'm making something the same colour, I use the partial first. Of course only when lot #'s aren't a problem. I also reach for partial skiens for amigrumi first. So I so have some scrap I'm saving but still not enough for a blanket.
@@WippyChickCrochet I really don’t have a favorite but I’ve only made two patterns twice and they were both octopi made differently. I’ve never counted how many ami’s I’ve made, but I force myself to make other things other than that. Thank you for asking.
Yes I love scrap blankets . And hats and slippers and amigarumi . Potholders dishcloths yes both in cotton .
