Yeah yeah blah blah super deep, but the combo of deep analysis and fantasy gave me a sense of freedom, a liberation from my stress. Thank you @Alt Shift X (and your other channels) for the many nights of staying up late learning about the best lore, lulling me to sleep with your godly voice, and dreams of dragons. Your content is truly, genuinely, something I look forward to. Thank you.
You can find lasting peace (that surpasses understanding) in Jesus Christ, friend. He's the only thing that truly, finally, absolutely works. I've tried it all, and you can too, but we all will still die because we have gone against the good we know we were made for. But God out of love took on flesh to live as we do and die in our place, resurrecting to defeat death. We just need to love God in return, trusting Him. It's very worth it.
GRRM’s biggest problem is that he’s a little too good at creating characters. He brings those characters to life, and now they have their own motivations that aren’t always in line with the way GRRM wanted to take the plot. That’s why we haven’t gotten book six, let alone the end of the series- he’s having a hard time getting those characters to act in a way that will bring everything together. Just a theory.
thats not a theory so much as just something thats obvious for anyone whos read the books. the world is too real. with actions that dont lead to a giant contraction just so everyone comes to westeros. thats why we need to give George some grace. its obviously not easy
@@fightingmedialounge519 for characters it does? especially if its a very vivid character with a complicated and well-defined personality. you can only generate so much drama with cheap writing and throwaway lines before a character's agency is called into question. you've seen what happens when people make characters do things that their characters obviously wouldnt do. it has to be so natural and complicated, which is something only a lively character can do.
Lmmfao someone should get all of the transcripts from Alt Shift X run it through an AI. Ask it to write Winds of Winter and anonymously send it to George R.R. Martin’s house
I can't imagine the prep work that you have to do to put these streams together. You must have 100+ tabs open, several monitors, and folders open with categories for specific bullet points you want to talk about. The fact that you're able to bounce from question to question and topic to topic all while pulling up applicable media without interrupting your conversational flow is damn impressive.
I think that the reason Catelyn thinks of Jon when she's praying to the Warrior is that she knows Jon was a better swordsman than Robb. In AGOT Jon bragged to Benjen about being a better swordsman than Robb. And In one of Jon's POV chapters in ADWD, Jon remembers that Catelyn would be displeased anytime Jon outdid Robb in their training, which would suggest that she paid close attention to their training.
Jon's change in perceptiveness may not be an error on George's part - it might be symbolic of power blinding people. Jon starts with no power, first as a bastard and then a recruit and steward and then a captive of the Wildlings and then under close watch with the threat of execution looming over him for quite a long time. Then suddenly he's the most powerful man north of Last Hearth (especially after Stannis leaves the Wall). The powerful figures in ASOIAF are so often oblivious to things going on around them. Cersei has no clue everyone around her is betraying her, Robert never suspected his In-Laws were plotting against him, Dany is ignorant of the Sons of the Harpy to the point of being surprised there's open rebellion against her. - and even Ned can't see his own downfall as he walks right into it despite being the Hand of the King Meanwhile the characters without ultimate power notice everything because they are constantly watching their backs - even Tyrion and Varys seem on top of most things, and Littlefinger has his eyes above and below him at all times as he climbs the power ladder. Power blinds. It fits the themes of the story so perfectly.
I think Jon will become more like Ghost after his resurrection. Ghost is a unique wolf, so Jon will change in unique ways. Like maybe he won’t make any noise like Ghost. Maybe he’ll become more connected to the old gods and that’s what will make him more brutal. A silent creepy Jon would be pretty goofy.
Also Jon will likely be more pro-Stark/North than he was ever before. He thinks of Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon before he dies. Resurrected individuals are obsessed with something (i.e Beric and Lady Stoneheart). All the evidence points to Jon becoming obsessed with remaining Starks and his goal will be doing everything in his power to protect them and the North - even if that means he does fucked up shit for their sakes.
@@Elegantwoes Yeah, he’ll probably want to reunite his pack before the long winter like ned said, “the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.” Also maybe, as a result, he’ll be really cruel to Jeyne Poole and Theon because they were lying about Arya and that could be an example of him becoming more wild and violent.
It's just so good to listen to alt shift x again after all those years watching thrones, the big heartache of how that show ended, and you just keep talking us through like the effing encyclopedia that you are. ❤
I’m re reading GOT and it is very interesting how much the appearances of the Stark’s are discussed. There is a chapter where Sansa asks Catelyn if Arya was a bastard because she looks like Jon.
Regarding Jon's true name, everyone forgets about Rhaegar's close buddy Jon Connington, it's not out of the realms of possibility that he could've named his son after JonCon
Jon and Rhaegar were not that close. Jon Con had no idea about the truth of Lyanna, ergo Rhaegar didn't trust him. It was obssession, kinda like Robert with Lyanna.
@@FernandoAlvarez-hz6hb Not trying to negate but JonCon had a gay crush on Rhaegar which may be the motivation behind his need to protect (who he believes is) Aegon. The dynamic is not the same at all.
Chances that Bran, through his time-warging, works out that the only way to defeat the Night King is to use Dany's last remaining dragon, Drogon, to burn the central Weirwood at the God's eye, triggering a chain reaction that destroys all the weirwoods - since they are connected - and removing all the magic from the world, allowing for an age of man? This would render Bran a cripple, rob Dany of her last remaining dragon, and undo Jon's resurrection, resulting in a bittersweet ending. The Wall would also come down, allowing the Wildlings to integrate with the North. Thoughts?
@@irasac1you could say that if dragons stem from some kind of magic, and the weirwoods are like “powering” said magic into the world, if they’re gone perhaps drogon like just goes caput. But that seems silly i guess. You could say during the attempt to burn the tree they’re fighting off white walkers and drogon sustains a killing blow but fights it off long enough to take the tree out. Afterwards though he succumbs to his wounds. Idk just random spitballing but it could be made to work in my opinion
Like the other guy said, I don’t hate this theory. Is it batshit? Yes, but it *works*, somehow. The world being saved only by magic being ended reminds me of the short story by GRRM called A Night at the Tarn House, which takes place on a future Earth where magic exists and is ending the world. Also, A Night at the Tarn House contains the first usage of the phrase “the night is dark and full of terrors”.
I want to bring up two things. 1. I believe jon becomes less observant as he becomes more "Lord Snow" which parallels what happens with Rob becoming Rob the Lord from Brans pov. 2. Why doesn't anyone think Jon's true name will be Daemon? Wouldn't it be ironic if the black fire was named Aegon and the Targaryen was named Daemon?
Because the name "Daemon" has no links to the first Long Night or the North, symbolic or otherwise. The current story is meant to mimic the ancient legends and theres no ancient Daemon's in this story. Remember, Targs are relatively new in Westeros. 300 years is nothing compared to the thousands of years the Starks have been there. Im a believer that Jon's real parents are Ned and Ashara and I believe his real name is Brandon, but Ned had to change it since Jon is a bastard. This would perfectly mimic the legend of the Night's King who was said to be a Brandon (likely Brandon of the Bloody Blade who was probably a bastard too) but was also brought down by his own brother, Brandon the Breaker. It also mimics the numerous examples of fratricide and kinslaying throughout the story. All the pieces fit.
I love the idea of Jon being resurrected, but no longer being a POV character. We could then follow his actions from a distance and guess at his intentions.
Thats so geat. Since all the other main characters who weren't POVs were built up in presence. Robb, Tywin, Stannis etc. It signifies Jon becoming more high status and regal.
My theory is that Jon’s Targaryen name would start with a “V” since Rhaegar was trying to remake Aegon the conqueror and his dream team. He already has Aegon and Rhaenys. He’s only missing Visenya, but Jon was a boy, so it would have to be a different “V” name. Rhaegar would probably not pick Viserys since that was taken (plus Aerys was always using Viserys against Rhaegar). Maybe Visenyon and Jon came from “yon”?
I think Jon’s real name is Joramun (named by Lyanna cause Rhaegar was dead). Joramun was supposedly the first King beyond the Wall who united with Bran the Breaker to defeat Night’s King. I suspect he was actually King Bran’s brother and therefore a Stark ancestor, with the two paralleling modern day Jon Snow and Bran the Broken. Idk how Lyanna would have known this, except if she was in with Rhaegar on researching Others lore and prophecy (plus having Old Nan stories to piece together). But if so Jon would have a name that is both Stark and Targaryen, and as a bonus the contraction to Jon would make sense (which is where Ned got ‘Jon’ from).
3:05:16 I also see a possibility that Jon’s real name is actually Viserys, if it isn’t Aegon, Aemon, or Jaehaerys. Because it seems like Rhaegar was looking to name his three children after the three Targaryen conquerors. I think he anticipated Jon to be a girl, and would have named the baby Visenya to match Rhaenys and Aegon. Because Rhaegar was fighting Robert during the birth, I think Lyanna (after learning Jon is a boy) may have had to choose the name herself. I think she would have gone for the male variant of Visenya, ergo Viserys. Some problems with this theory would be that neither of the two Targaryen kings named Viserys were particularly significant to Rhaegar’s efforts. Jon and Dany are both direct male-line descendants from both Viserys I and Viserys II, but I don’t know if that is enough. And, the so-called “Viserys III” has already been in the story and is well-known as Dany’s awful brother. Maybe Rhaegar would’ve planned for the name Viserys with Lyanna, naming a possible son as either Visenya for the conqueror or because of his younger brother. But it doesn’t solve the issue of “there are too many characters with [x] Targaryen male name” for Jon to be distinct. So honestly, I’m okay with Aemon, Jaehaerys, or Viserys, as Jon’s real name. Anything but Aegon.
Viserys would be a great name because you just need to picture Danys reaction to learning about that in your head. "Hey Dany, im secretly the dragon and my name is Viserys."
Aegon being his birth name is the best option, because it highlights that Jon's real name is not some Targaryen name given by parents he never knew, but his real name is Jon, given by his REAL (not physical) dad, Ned. It highlights his identity. When there's fAegon and he's also an Aegon the 6th and there was an Aegon baby that died, etc. It highlights how his true identity is not going to be in some super secret revealed family name that he has no attachment to and is trying to be claimed by some other fake. It will bring him to embrace the identity of Jon.
@@valleyscharping I agree that he’ll embrace his identity as Jon, and everything you said is tolerable. But I don’t think it’s the most fitting, it does not say more about the character or situation to have another Aegon. Like, who Jon is aside, it makes zero sense for Lyanna or Rhaegar to name him Aegon. At the time of both of their deaths (or Jon’s birth) neither of them knew Aegon and Rhaenys were dead. So if Rhaegar told her to name the child Aegon, that means: for some reason Rhaegar anticipated the first Aegon to die (which is weird, considering when he appears in the dream Daenerys has, Rhaegar speaks at the child he’s cradling as if the baby is essential to the conflict against the “dark and cold”). But if instead, Lyanna chose the name independently, then that means she’s willfully ignoring Rhaegar’s first son, or also anticipates him to die. Neither situation makes any sense, and I don’t think Lyanna was clairvoyant. There’s no evidence she could have guessed that Robert was winning, and that he would have her son killed. So I think Aegon isn’t Jon’s “real name”, but I agree that ‘Jon’ is his true name.
I could see Jon and Danny’s romance budding over dragons if Ghost loses his life to bring Jon back. Bonding so deeply with a dragon would potentially fill the void of losing his dire wolf
I got into ASoIaF almost 9ish years ago, read it all really quick, and haven't revisited the books since. I still love the series and fandom but this channel is what's making me want to do a reread
I really don't think that Bloodraven made Ghost physically make a sound, since no one hears it *except* Jon despite him insisting it's there. I don't know if Bloodraven was involved at all, but do recall that Ghost already had his eyes open when Jon rescued him. I tend to think there was a brief warging moment and that's what Jon "heard." More than one character notes the talent runs very strong in him, including another skinchanger, and Ghost seems to be a prodigy in his own right, aware enough and awake enough that he might've seen he was being left and called for help.
I don't think it's that John became less perceptive, I think it is more so that his field of view has expanded to encompass so much more than it did before. So his senses of deduction are constantly occupied by other affairs and keeping track of different things, so other details slip past him.
2:44:52 I think one other possibility from the show runner perspective is “oh great, more action scenes” in the sense that they view those as exciting. And also, a more active main character, going out and doing rather than sitting in one place
Here’s an idea with Ned VS Arthur, and why there’s no love lost between Starks & Daynes: What if they DIDN’T fight each other? What if, by the time Ned learned the truth at the Tower of Joy, they were on the same side? Then, Something wild happens at the tower, Arthur dies to foul play, and to protect Arthur’s Honor as a Knight, Ned takes credit. He returns Dawn to Starfall, and when (whoever confronts him) doesn’t believe his story, he tells them the truth. The Daynes are now grateful to Ned for preserving Arthur’s legacy, and back up the cover story. It’s a cracked theory, but you never know
i haen't watched Alt Shift X in years, maybe 5 years then The real Jon Snow came out which caught my eye and i watched it and this im enjoying this Q&A more than the other ideo
Jon's unnatural strength could be a result of his bond with Ghost. A number of historical Targaryens including Aenys, are said to have become stronger after bonding with dragons. And if the dragon bond and skinchanger bond are in fact similar, the same could be true of skinchangers who bond with physically powerful animals. And the direwolf is certainly a powerful animal.
I have a feeling tons of the nights watch will disappear at Hard Home, all the corpses will reanimate, and John Snows body will reanimate in a cell beneath the wall. John will have to take his own body back from inside of Ghost, and he will learn a bunch about The Others while driving the wight out of his body, with the help of Millesandre.
Someone in the chat asked you how you think the characters are going to end. That could be a really interesting video, I would definitely love to hear it!
Oh noo I missed the live! But u can't expect my Euro ass to get up before 8 on a Saturday tho😂 Thank you for the absolute unit that is the real Jon Snow! EDIT: 6h?! Seriously? I should've just stayed up then
Gosh, love the story that GRRM has given us...and honestly, the #1 Unfinished Fantasy Series of all time isn't the worst legacy to go out on if he doesn't end up finishing it.
Robb and Jon grew up as brothers. Brothers with the same dad and a different mother. A step mother who hates you for one and a blood mother who "mothers you" dearly as a man. Makes jons last comment to him so much more incredible when caitlin wished him dead and 10 minutes later he spoke to his brother and childhood best friend for the last time and decided to lie to his face to spare him some of the pain of losing your closest person. .
At this point, which one is the real Jon Snow? The show finished his story, the books haven't been finished yet. He may never finish the books, leaving his story unfinished. That said, I hated the final season and hope to read what was really planned for him, if anything different was planned. I have to believe his story ends differently in the books. What a waste in the show. YEARS of teasing his real origins... only to have him yell at a dragon and sucker stab a queen. "Who has a greater story than Bran the crippled." Oh, i don't know, maybe the secret king that literally died and came back to life?! I'm ranting now.
When talking about Cat and Jon's last interaction, Jon could've also taken it to be how she truly felt the whole time and not because she in a very emotional state. He was going to The Wall so it was the last time they would've seen each other, there was no more reason to be civil, and that could've painted previous coldness in a different light.
Bro you are the GOAT! Drop a bomb of a video then a 6 hour livestream, well done! Itll ALWAYS crack me up when you say bran is busy being a tree lol 😂😅😅

Really fun and low key approach to live streaming, listened to this while playing Elden Ring. There's an IGN article saying "According to Miyazaki, Martin primarily wrote snippets of text about the world's history, its characters, and mythology, including the destruction of the Elden Ring and the subsequent scattering of shards." Back in Oct 2022 GRrM said, ""So, I went back and wrote a history of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they had.” The more I learn about the Elden Ring world the more I hope they eventually publish some of what George wrote.
I'd love to read a story about a young sellsword escaping a losing battle and travelling the Seven Kingdoms, dueling other sellswords, carrying vague messages for cadet branches of noble houses, maesters, nerchants, whisperers, etc., just being a guy trying to make a living.
Speaking of the consequences of Catelyn pushing Jon away, I'm thinking about a scenario where Jon is with Robb throughout the campaign and offers to marry Jeyne in Robb's stead in an attempt to protect the Frey alliance while still giving her a high-ranking marriage in the form of the King in the North's half-brother.
I believe you are one of my top favorite UA-camrs. However, for some reason, I can never remember your channel name lol. Every time I listen to or watch one of your videos, I find myself drawn back into obsessing over the lore being discussed. Keep up the great work!
Years ago, because of these videos, I determined that, as soon as TWoW came out, I would finally read the ASoIaF books. Now, with the release of this video, I've finally just bitten the bullet and bought the books. Maybe TWoW will never come. At this point, I don't care. This storytelling just has to be beyond me to warrant this level of speculation and intrigue. This whole series curses my mind in its incompletion
Does anyone agree with me that the book/ Martin’s version of Jon Snow is much more mysterious, thoughtful and alluring than the version Harrington portrayed??? It’s no fault of Kit’s but D and D just wanted another mini version of Ned Stark and made him as such. He was too one dimensional in the show.
I don't know if anyone else has commented on this yet, but as for the mounting one handed--that's an incredible feat. As someone who works with horses and rides regularly, it can be a bit of hassle to get up from the ground even with two hands. It doesn't say if he's vaulting or not, which would be just dead lifting yourself into the saddle from a running start, vs regular mounting which would have at least a foot in the stirrup, but regardless, doing all that with the weight of equipment AND a sword is insane if it's a one off feat and not practiced. Not to mention depending on how tall his horse is, he'd have to heave himself up pretty high. Assuming his horse is as least 15-16 hands (hands measured in 4 inch increments, so their back/withers at minimum 5 ft from the ground), that's pretty incredible. I know it's just a silly detail that GRRM probably didn't think much of--but for someone who knows about that stuff it's just kinda funny.

The lost effect
thats not a theory so much as just something thats obvious for anyone whos read the books. the world is too real. with actions that dont lead to a giant contraction just so everyone comes to westeros. thats why we need to give George some grace. its obviously not easy
Yeah, that's not exactly how the writtin process works.

She knows he is much more than he appears. A feeling she does not get from Robb. Might be part of the reason she distrusts and resents him. 🤔
Hmm
@Xa4t Like his father/uncle, he’ll be a Quiet Wolf
Like in assassins quest
I think Jon is gonna come back pissed and merk a lot of people. Probly becomes the Night's King.

Jon and Rhaegar’s relationship was primarily onesided
@@jacobenke7936How exaggerated
@@somm150Jon and Rhaegar were close, just because Rhaegar and Arthur were closer doesn't negate that.
Thoughts?
It seems cataclysmic enough to be a finale, and sacrificing magic for the sake of humanity is a nice heroic act
how does Drogon die in that scenario?
You know what, I don't hate this.
Thanks for Shift-ing again Alt
He should choose Maekar, because that's the coolest Targaryen name 😍
369 minutes and 28 seconds...
A NEW RECORD 🥳🎉
2-hour Jon video was awesome, man. This is looking to be just as entertaining. Keep up the great work.
Unreal work. And then the unreal livestream. Very great work. Keep it up.
Yonerys
Vaemon

I like this theory
Lord Commander Snow with his red eyes snow white Direwolf and a black raven on his shoulder.
I want a 6 hour livestream on the more esoteric mysteries (glass candles, oily stone, the high tower origins, etc)
Love it! The context, the symbolism, its very well thought out. My only thing is Joramun sounds like a rasta saying "jorah-mon" 🇧🇯
Omfg i love this somebody get this on George’s desk please
Dude, 6 hours. You're a beast
Alt Shift X was last seen abeast.
The howland reed blunt rotation caught me off guard and actually had me laughing out loud 😂
Just imagine it bro
Loved the Jon Snow vid and this was just as enjoyable and informative! Appreciate the mounds of hard work.

Damm I thought you had the real Jon Snow with you to ansver the questions 😂
I hope Ghost claims Rhaegal and they both fly away from ungrateful Jon. He doesn’t deserve Ghost. Unstoppable duo.
Here’s an idea with Ned VS Arthur, and why there’s no love lost between Starks & Daynes:
What if they DIDN’T fight each other? What if, by the time Ned learned the truth at the Tower of Joy, they were on the same side?
Then, Something wild happens at the tower, Arthur dies to foul play, and to protect Arthur’s Honor as a Knight, Ned takes credit.
He returns Dawn to Starfall, and when (whoever confronts him) doesn’t believe his story, he tells them the truth. The Daynes are now grateful to Ned for preserving Arthur’s legacy, and back up the cover story.
It’s a cracked theory, but you never know
If ASX decided to write The Winds of Winter, I’d consider it 100% cannon.

I have made my peace with A Song of Ice and Fire never being finished. 🤷♂
ASOIAF is so good and dense that you can easily talk about one character for 6 hours
I was thinking the Shereen burning might wake Jon from death, hence waking the dragon from stone.
There's a connection between Azor Ahai, the dragons and like, the Prometheus myth.
We stole fire, so they sent ice.
Very excited to use this video to go to sleep for the next year!
this is the content that makes you my king of ASOIAF youtube
This feels like a jackpot win of an upload
Makes jons last comment to him so much more incredible when caitlin wished him dead and 10 minutes later he spoke to his brother and childhood best friend for the last time and decided to lie to his face to spare him some of the pain of losing your closest person. .
Stannis taking winterfell through the crypts would be so poetic. A supposedly dead king (after the battle of ice) invading winterfell from the grave
In a world where shift keeps the asoiaf community alive only watching all his videos multiple times can keep the peace
Itll ALWAYS crack me up when you say bran is busy being a tree lol 😂😅😅
never got to say this live but i think a viable alternate theory is that ashara killed herself upon learning the news from the capital of elia martells fate
Really fun and low key approach to live streaming, listened to this while playing Elden Ring. There's an IGN article saying "According to Miyazaki, Martin primarily wrote snippets of text about the world's history, its characters, and mythology, including the destruction of the Elden Ring and the subsequent scattering of shards."
Back in Oct 2022 GRrM said, ""So, I went back and wrote a history of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they had.”
The more I learn about the Elden Ring world the more I hope they eventually publish some of what George wrote.
Imma be honest and say I don’t think I’ve ever stayed awake for more of 45 min of one of these streams… but I love any minute of what I do hear
I believe you are one of my top favorite UA-camrs. However, for some reason, I can never remember your channel name lol.
Every time I listen to or watch one of your videos, I find myself drawn back into obsessing over the lore being discussed. Keep up the great work!
Worth a relisten! All good vibes. You ever think about starting abridge reading to put some pressure on... that evil named one?
Years ago, because of these videos, I determined that, as soon as TWoW came out, I would finally read the ASoIaF books. Now, with the release of this video, I've finally just bitten the bullet and bought the books. Maybe TWoW will never come. At this point, I don't care. This storytelling just has to be beyond me to warrant this level of speculation and intrigue. This whole series curses my mind in its incompletion
Your comment around “why Gendry is in the story” is spot on in regards to valerian steel. Everyone in these books has a purpose, that has to be his.
Will you do the real Daenerys next? Love your work 🎉
Can’t even imagine how hard the Dune 2 video is going to slap, can’t wait for his analysis/explanation.
