For natural beauty and climate California cannot be beat. Most Californians don’t really think about earthquakes as a major one hasnt hit in over 25 years. Most will think about it after it happens. The main reasons people leave are cost of living, homelessness problem, crime and traffic. You’re right about the home average mine is exactly 1600 sq ft with 5,000 sq ft lot but it’s worth $1.2 mil in a normal middle class neighborhood nothing special. Thinking Raleigh is a good place to move but my property taxes are very low here at $1100 per year because of proposition 13. I want to buy 3-4 houses to live and rent out but in actuality may have to shell out more each month for taxes, etc. any good areas with about 1500 sq ft and small lots? I don’t want to maintain much.
Californians often mention the fires to me as reasons for leaving as well. I guess that depends a lot on location though. There are many locations that could fit your needs around Raleigh. Why don’t you send me an email and we can schedule a call next week to talk about it. ellen.pitts@hunterrowe.com
DISLIKE!! Don't tell anybody how nice NC is!! They will all try to move to NC and it will make it harder for me to find a house to buy! We just got back to Annapolis from my 4th unsuccessful trip to NC and am still looking. I lived in Kalifornia for 18 months back in the 1970's and would NEVER live there again. We LOVE NC, especially the Sandhills. Most important reason to NOT live in Kali: the one topic you couldn't discuss - politics. They are insane people. I'm surprised Kali hasn't slid into the ocean due to how left leaning their population is today. The only other omission: Earthquakes! Saw a 4.5 in San Carlos, CA and will never forget it. P.S. (Love your other videos!!)
Newcomers always talk about the weather, taxes, cost and other financial aspect of States like NC when they move from a State like CA, but they rarely talk about the people. Probably because of where they come from its less important. It's the people and their common sense who have made NC a good place to live. Leave the "blue" politics, bougie attitude, pretentiousness and entitlement in California! North Carolinians are not perfect, but they are a down to earth, practical, helpful people inspired by the idea of southern gentry. They are some of the best America has to offer. So, don't bring the worst. And because you think you are bringing 'business and money' does not mean you are bringing the best. You can keep that in CA too.
if it's fair to call us bougie pretentious and entitled then it's fair for us to call you drab uneducated hicks. neither are that nice to say and neither are actually true. or rather they are overly reductionistic. but based on differences in perspective both can seem true. i wouldn't say people from either place are inherently bad or of poor character.
That is so hilarious but makes total sense! Thank you for sharing! Another fun fact… the town the show was based on is called Mt Airy and it’s a really great place to visit!
The dry gets you dry skin, brown/dusty landscape, droughts, wildfires, chilly ocean water. The more humid climate gets you sun and rain, healthy skin, green/lush/flora landscapes, 4- seasons, warmer ocean water. I’ll take the hurricanes over earthquakes. 5-10 miles inland, the farther west you go, the damage risk goes down exponentially. Hurricanes affect a much smaller geographical and population area than earthquakes, plus you have plenty of warning. No warning for earthquakes. For us personally when everything is balanced out, we prefer the Carolina’s climate hands down. Not even close.
The weather here in Ca. Is the best. Tried N.C. For 20 years. Hated the Hot sticky summers.. N.C. winters are horrible. Freezing. Bitter cold. Not worth the cheap housing. Yes CA. is very expensive but worth every penny.
I am a Relocation Specialist and Statistical Analyst here in the Charlotte area. Great video! I hear from people litteraly everyday from CA, NY, NJ, MA, IL, and other such states the same complaints about cost of living, out of control homelessness, government overreach, etc. NC has the best balance of Buying Power (income vs. overall cost of living), 4 seasons, strong economy, and recreational assets. Though CA's climate as its merits, I personally don't like it. Earthquakes, wildfires, smog, brown/dusty/dry/barren landscape in SoCal, chilly ocean water,. In terms of the "Boom Town" aspect you were speaking of, NC and CA have both been in the top 10 states in terms of growth since the 1960's (CA fell out of the top 10 in the 90's), with FL being the fastest growing state by far since the 1960's. In the 1990's, NC (21.4%) passed CA (13.8%) in population growth rate and has led them ever since. Just in the last 3 years, NC has grown 3.8% and CA has lost population by 1.5%. So, NC has been much more consistent in its growth than CA over the decades. Sorry for rambling, lol. I'm just a stats geek. Great video and I would recommend NC to anyone who is willing to assimilate to our area without bringing the problems with them that are ruining the areas they're fleeing.
I’ve lived in California all my life and I’m almost 40. I’m ready to start the second half of my life in NC and I can’t wait. So ready to get out of this insanely expensive and overpopulated state full of crazy liberals. NC absolutely demolishes California in terms of cost of living, beauty, population, economy and jobs etc. I’m ready to leave asap
I gave a home in both North Carolina and California! Hands down…. North Carolina I’d the best! My home is in the mountains and the weather is great! Last summer I had weather in the 70’s and very low 80’s… and very little humidity! California had in 90’s and low 100’s!! Love, love the green and trees!! I live in a rain forest and loved the rain! Way too rare in California!!
I have visited North Carolina a lot. The best thing about NC are the people. They call it southern hospitality. They are genuine, and put a smile on your face. Then I meet folks who are not from NC, and you can always tell. Not all of them, but definitely most of them, are not nice people. Even when they are trying to be nice. And that can turn a good place bad very quick. No matter how cheaper it is.
Another great video! A couple questions though: Do you have to worry about bear attacks when hiking? And what about alligators? Can you walk safely along a river without worrying about an alligator suddenly coming out of the water to grab your ankle-or your dog?
I don’t think bears are generally a problem but you definitely want to practice bear safety like not leaving food around. Alligators…we don’t see them here at all. No worries about your puppies!! Are you in Florida? I grew up there and remember that constant fear well!
@@EllenPitts Thanks for your reply, Ellen. We currently live in California, but we’re contemplating a move to North Carolina in order to be closer to family. As a retired Army doctor, my husband would prefer to live near a military base/military hospital. What are your thoughts on the Jacksonville area? Thanks! 😊
I walk on trails and near marshes all the time ( Currently a Marine in Jacksonville) and haven’t seen an alligator. I’ve only seen them crossing roads a few times but not as many. Jacksonville is nothing extraordinary honestly, just your average town with Walmarts, Chains, a few good mom/pop places and “gentleman” clubs. Don’t know your affordability but I would live somewhere like Emrald isle instead but if you were able to afford CA you could afford a house close to it. Emerald isle is 15 min from base anyways.

Hello thanks for the review, this could be used for a review on the northeast coast, just add winter weather. Lol And also how about a review of the the benefits of retiring to NC. The 5 % state tax on pensions is my only concern when I move there. Could be made up by lower property tax. I'm still working out the numbers. Thanks
Hillbilly racist state? 🤷♂️ Is your statement based on having been there and experiencing it or watching too much TV and being shaped by what the media tells you?
They don’t like them at the coast but seriously the thing about hurricane snacks and hurricane parties are absolutely true!! But further in we just don’t get enough damage from them for us to be concerned much. Raleigh is 2-3 hours inland and it’s extremely rare to get more than a few days with lost power. So you prep for it and pretend your camping! :)
What do you think? Did I miss any important elements that make NC better than California? Or do you think California is better and why?
Weather along the California coast is MUCH better than NC, no contest. But living in California has the risk of a major earthquake.
Yeah… I definitely prefer a little humidity to earthquakes.
