Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia or Queen City and The ATL
Two of the biggest cities in the Southern United States, just four hours apart on Interstate 85. In fact, the rivalry between the NFL teams of both cities, the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons, is even called the “I-85 Rivalry.”
But it’s not just a football rivalry. Plenty of folks from both cities talk trash about each other.
Atlanta has more than twice as many residents.
But both have a similar population density. Both have about the same median age. (A-33.5, C-33.9) Both have a lot of African American residents, although Atlanta has more (A-54%, C-35%).
Both have similar climates. A humid subtropical climate, to be specific. Both get a lot of rain each year, but Atlanta gets more (A- 52 in, C- 43 in). Both don’t get much snow, but since it gets slightly colder in the winter in Charlotte due to it being further north, it does get more. Mostly, though, both are known for somewhat mild winters, which is a big reason why so many folks have been moving to both in recent decades. Speaking of which, Atlanta was the 8th-fastest growing city last year and Charlotte was the 9th. Both are far enough inland that they rarely get hit by hurricanes.
Both have a bike sharing system. Both are known for great barbecue.
Both call any soft drink not soda or pop but Coke. Ah, but it’s Atlanta that is home to the world headquarters of Coca-Cola, the largest Coke company in the world. Er, I mean, the largest soft drink company in the world. Atlanta has lots of huge companies headquartered there, actually, like UPS, Delta, Newell Rubbermaid, and Home Depot.
Oh yeah? Well Charlotte has Bank of America, Honeywell, Duke Energy, Brighthouse Financial, and Lowe’s. Wait, Atlanta has Home Depot and Charlotte has Lowe’s? This is getting good.
Major industries in Atlanta include financial services, telecommunications, and technology, although the city is also known for its TV and film industry. Due to Georgia’s generous tax credits, producers have filmed A LOT of movies and TV shows in the city in recent years. Hollywood South represent. Major industries in Charlotte also include financial services, but also energy, and automotive ...particularly motorsports. Wait...what? Motorsports? Heck yeah. And Charlotte has a growing TV and film industry presence, too.
But yeah, let’s just focus on differences for the rest of the video. First of all, Atlanta is Georgia’s state capital.

I've lived in Atlanta my whole life. My father worked at Jacob's Pharmacy which had the first soda fountain to serve Coca-Cola. I've never heard a single person refer to a soft drink generically as a "Coke" or "Coca-Cola". People usually just name the specific softdrink, which they want. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Dr Pepper, etc
Over the the years, when I've heard soft drinks referenced, I've heard "cold drink", "soft drink", & "soda", & rarely "fountain drink" & "carbonated drink", usually as part of the question, "Do you want a "cold drink?" followed by, what kind? I'll have ...", but I believe, that the use of Coke or Coca-Cola as a generic term is a myth in Atlanta and probably throughout the South. ...I can't speak for anywhere else.

I must admit this video was pretty accurate but in my opinion both cities have a variety of entertainment but Charlotte is more family oriented with events and entertainment choices.. The job and career markets are similar but if you’re into banking and finance the Charlotte is the place . Also if you are a blue collar worker such as myself you have so much to choose from and make a pretty decent living due to the open house if markets and cost of living...lastly the police here in Charlotte are much more tamed and cool they don’t give you a hard time and not so quick to get you caught up in the system for minor thing even though Charlotte has it bad apples but for the most part Ive not have had nearly the amount of bad encounters here in Charlotte as Atlanta.. so I choose Charlotte hands down for overall better quality of living... thanks for this comparison video ...

As an urban planner from Atlanta and working in Charlotte I have strong feelings about both cities.
I strongly favor Atlanta as it has a number of happening inner-city neighborhoods with distinct sub-cultures. Charlotte's break to immediate sprawl makes for a more suburban feeling inner-city with fewer inner-city neighborhood spots. Atlanta's metro-region has more sprawl but with an aprox 140 square mile city limit, the city is far more urban. Charlotte 300+ square mile limit made up primarily of suburban developments create a less urbanized feel. Atlanta has a more intact and connected grid-system, allowing safer connections for pedestrian and cyclists. Charlotte's road network is highly disconnected forcing pedestrians and cyclists on to large and fast roads. (personal note) Charlotte's city government seems more effective at handling matters of urban development.
    Just some thoughts there.

As a native to Charlotte, I would say our biggest drawback is the lack of a rooted culture. My parents did not grow up here, rather in NY and RI, and there are many many residents who moved here rather than grew up here. There isn't really a common identifier that I can think of that defines the city positively or negatively.

Awesome video, I've been waiting for this one! A current resident of the Charlotte metro, I really like it here. I've been to Atlanta too many times to count to visit family and consider it my second home. I love both cities. They both have a lot to offer in different ways.
Although some would say Charlotte has no history or culture, I'd beg to differ. It's out there, and there are groups working to bring it out and preserve it. To me Charlotte is a big city with a small town feel. It's core is much more packed into the i-277 loop versus Atlanta's dense edge cities, Buckhead, midtown, and Cumberland for example. Compare to Charlotte’s South Park , University South End, and Ballentyne are much smaller, but have the same potential as their counterparts in Atlanta. On the transportation side of the picture, we can not dream of competing with Atlanta. Charlotte is in the process of making changes though. I think many residents have seen the benefits that rail transportation can afford and, though just one 20 mile line with more on the way, it is used by about 30,000 people a day. There are plans to add the Silver line from the suburb of Belmont in Gaston County through uptown and on to the town of Matthews.
Culture in Atlanta is much more expansive than Charlotte. There is just more to do there. Charlotte though is currently building up its own identity. Whether you agree with it or not, Charlotte was just a town where people came to work in the day and left in the afternoon. It's uptown core would become a ghost town. That has changed in the past 20 years though. With Charlotte’s explosive growth there seems to be more and more things popping up to cater to the young or family crowd here. From breweries to art shows, baseball to soccer very soon, Charlotte is finally finding its own place in the southeast.
In the grand scheme of things, Atlanta's metro is just bigger and has more to do. But if you are looking for a slower pace and less traffic, I'd choose Charlotte any day. I love Atlanta though! And I'm sure if a few things in my life went differently, I would be calling it home. But for now I just have to be satisfied with the trips I take down 85.
(p.s. ; Atlanta city proper is much smaller at 486,000 vs Charlotte’s 856,000. But it's metro drawfs Metrolina. Everything just blends so perfectly that if you live in Douglas County, you can still say that you are from Atlanta)

I've lived in the Atlanta metro for almost my entire life and have never met anyone who actually refers to any kind of soda as "coke."
Although, chances are when people are drinking a soda it's most likely a Coke product, and it's usually a regular Coke or one of the sugar free varieties of it.
I wonder if this misconception got so widespread just because we tend to just drink a lot of Coke here and it's not that we call any soda "coke" but just that we just often go for that one.

Very much enjoyed the video. I was a resident of Charlotte from 2000 to 2008 and Atlanta from 2008 to today (2020). In the grand scheme of things taking in all major American cities, they are very much cousins as your video demonstrates -- much more like each other than say Seattle or Phoenix or Pittsburgh or DC, etc.
I like both cities, but I have to give the edge to Charlotte. I had more of a sense of community there. I just felt more "at home" and had a better network of friends. It was easier to get around in Charlotte and get things done. I have taken lots of long walks in both cities, and Charlotte just felt a little more right. I had a better rhythm life.
Atlanta pluses: Less snow and ice. More international/cosmopolitan feel to ATL. More job opportunities. There's more to see and discover here. More health care options here.
I longed to go back to Charlotte my first few years here. Now I've settled in. Out of nothing more than laziness, I'd probably stay in Atlanta over moving back to Charlotte. Twelve years later, it would be hard to recapture the "magic."

If Charlotte didn’t have the piedmont triad metro and Raleigh Durham triangle it would by far have a further metro area.
