Same here. I’m not a smoker either, but I think the ingenuity behind the Zippo lighter is just pure “old school” Americana. I’ve got one that’s been in my family since WWll. Collectors item, I don’t use it , but my boy has his eye on it and someday, after I check out, it’ll be his.

my grandfather gave me his old Zippo lighter from the 1960's, it works just the same as this. Im a breadstick so I don't smoke, but at least I can get this vintage lighter working again. Its pretty cool.

Thats the thing, I ignorantly sprayed the butane through that small hole in the bottom. My theory is that it was leaking out of the top and when I sparked the gas burned, still have my eyebrows thankfully.
Nice review and thank you sir from Oregon. My dad smoked for years before quitting in the sixties, and all he used was a classic stainless Zippo. I remember that familiar click and him frequently filling his lighter. He didn't lift up the top felt flap as recommended. He simply poured the fluid through the top via the spare flint hole, let it sit upside down for a bit on a paper towel, then back together.I've 3 pretty nice Zippos, with a sterling Armor model shipping en route I bought myself for Christmas.Yes keep stocked with flints and keep one inside your lighter bottom pad and have at least one good classic Zippo for whatever you choose to light up.
Been 7 years so you prolly wont see this but thanks for the upload! Its an absurdly easy procedure but it still definitely brings some comfort seeing someone else do it first so i know im not ruining something

One thing I've done that helps to make the lighter last longer between refills is to remove and repack all of the cotton in the reservoir so that the wick snakes it's way between each layer of cotton. Surprisingly simple with a pair of tweezers and a small screwdriver and it helps the wick to soak up lighter fluid
I love see all the fellow non-smokers that just think zippos are dope. My grandfather had some knockoffs in his basement and thanks to this guy, they work again.

You surprisingly these videos are super helpful, sometimes you just don't know. My dad always tells me, you don't know what you don't know so no sense in stressing over it. I was going through old shoe boxes and knick knack boxes after all these years and I found an old zippo and been trying to figure out to restore and refill it. I don't have much use case outside of the candles I buy every now and again but it's been nice to figure out how to actually refill it. Turns out it was good to go and just needed some fuel 🙂 it's nice to know Zippo has stayed tried and true and kind of timeless in a sense they just work and work well. I wonder how old the zippo I found would be 😂
I think it's definitely best to lift the little thing to fill it because once it starts dripping and you put it all back together, the unsaturated cotton flap will absorb a little so the zippo is slightly under saturated so it doesn't leak in your pocket. I think that's why they say to lift it.

Well i did everything you said went to light it and cought my hole hand on fire and now there a hole in my desk because the lighter got in fire and wouldent go out no madder what i did so i ran into my garage and got a fire extinguisher and put it out.

To be honest it could be you need a new wick my friend I saw my friend she had this same problem it could be 1) the wick has been moved to far away from where the spark is or 2) simply the wick is too short, used up either way you can buy Zippo wicks anywhere that sells lighters the next trick is threading it through the lighter and all I can say on that is you sir are on your own lol it's tricky but you'll get there man
Yep, first time Zippo owner and I wasn't quite sure how to tell when to stop pouring the fuel. I ended up doing what you suggest. Once I saw it drip, just one drop, I stopped and it worked out just perfect. I couldn't tell visually if I had poured enough fuel no matter how hard I looked. Tadej Sustarsic They dry out much faster than I thought. I don't use them very often so I can't speak to exactly at what interval they would need to filled, but I'd say anywhere from once a week to every couple of weeks wouldn't surprise me.
It takes bout a week and a half to 2 weeks to run out. Just do not fill a zippo until it drips through the top it can over fill and leak. I do 2 or 3 6 second squirts and it works fine.

You can put a new flint in. There some thingy you can get out with a screw driver just next to where you fill ur Zippo. You can buy flint fire stones from Zippo. Good luck make it spark :D :p

I do not agree with your comment that Ronsonol and Zippo fluid are the same and there is no difference. AFter filling your lighter the Ronsonol fluid will evaporate much quicker than the Zippo fuel causing you to fill the lighter again. My suggestion is go with the Zippo fluid only unless you like filling you lighter all the time. Just my two cents!

Back in the 1960s when I was a teenager a Zippo was a must have for the guys who smoked. It was always cool to flip open the old Zippo with it's unique 'click'. Remember the 'teenager' in the movie "Grease" and the Zippo blow torch flame? LOL!!!

@@matthewerulkar3164 You'd loose your Flint if you were to store it in the hole. You store it on top of the Felt Wad so you don't have it fall out.

Always make sure you clean any excess fluid off of your hands and the outside of the lighter!

I only use real zippo lighter fluid. It’s pure and has less impurities.

Back in the 1960s when I was a teenager a Zippo was a must have for the guys who smoked. It was always cool to flip open the old Zippo with it's unique 'click'. Remember the 'teenager' in the movie "Grease" and the Zippo blow torch flame? LOL!!!
I got one as a gift and I'm a non smoker . But for my line of business it's good to have a lighter. So this video was definitely helpful
