  • In this video I'm reviewing this $8 Walmart Zippo that I have been using as my every day carry (EDC) for the past three months with a Chinese made rubber gasket on the bottom of the insert instead of the factory felt pad.

    Walmart zippos are great, you’re not as attached to it, you can give them out as gifts and if you loose it, you can always get another one. It’s a zippo without a box. That’s it.

    The hinge is where it leaks from. Its always a good idea to store a zippo wrapped in a small plastic bag. This stops vapour evaporation. A zippo will normally last a few days without wrapping but if you wrap in a plastic bag it can last over a month.

    • @zippolyonsden1623
      @zippolyonsden1623  6 місяців тому

      Definitely correct, that they leak from the hinge as well as from the bottom. I use my Zippo throughout the day, every day. I just keep it in a leather pouch. I only refuel once a week still and haven't run dry yet. Also, I no longer have one of these gaskets in it. Just original felt pad from the factory. Basically, I was just trying them out to see how they were. They're not really worth it. Thank you for commenting.

    I have 2 Chinese rubber ones. Had them for over 2 years & always transfer them to my "carry/in use" zippo & have had zero problems. Got a couple more, they're plastic, don't fit as well & don't seal as they are warped. Thought "fine, I've got dodgy ones. It happens". Ordered more from a different place, different maker, still warped.
    Think I'll stick to my rubber ones.

    Just switch the standard Zippo insert with the Zippo butane insert, and you won't have to worry about fuel evaporation👍

      Thank you for the advice and for commenting. I don't use these gaskets anymore. Haven't for over a year now. Found them to be more of a pain than what they're worth, lol. I honestly don't like the butane inserts all that much, either. I use just a standard Zippo insert in my away from home Zippo and a regular pipe insert for my at home Zippo.

    • @ThomasConnolly
      @ThomasConnolly 4 дні тому +1

      @zippolyonsden1623 I actually like a butane lighter insert, but I'm not a fan of Zippo's official butane insert. Why, because Zippo's official butane lighter insert doesn't have a window on it, which would allow you to see how much butane you have inside. The Vector Thunderbird butane lighter insert has a body made of clear polymer, so you can easily see how much fuel you have left inside. The one drawback to the Vector Thunderbird butane insert is that you have to slightly bend the metal tab inside the lid of your Zippo case to get it to fit the cam properly.

    • @zippolyonsden1623
      @zippolyonsden1623  4 дні тому

      @ThomasConnolly I've been wondering how the Thunderbird inserts are. Fully agree about the Zippo butane ones and not being able to see how much fluid are in them. I also do not care for the small buttons on the official Zippo ones. I have clumsy thumbs that keep sliding off the little buttons, lol. I burnt myself a couple of times with the butane pipe insert 🤣.

    i never liked the stability of the hinges in my very different zippos from 30 years for 30 years -
    and if you use them a lot in blue collar environments - its getting worser
    motivated by a "zippo-fan-site" i evolved from pressing the hinges to extracting the "bolt" [hope its the correct name]
    i replaced them with steel nails - about the size of the cardboard-pins i used to extract the bolt
    - the original zippo-bolts do cover the outer hinges just half
    with the nail and short rounding of the cutted edges the hinges get real stability
    for the additional bottom plate i experimented with several materials inkluding ntb - nitril-butadien-kautschuk
    my solution were these red plastic covers you use top of outdoor pipes and cables to prevent damage from shovelwork
    a little bit work with a dremel - 20 minutes for 4 covers including drilling the opening for the flint-tube
    optical not industrial perfect - but perfect enough for me

      @zippolyonsden1623  10 місяців тому

      I agree with not liking Zippo hinge stability. I've some that date back to the 1940s and 1950s that have better hinges than the modern ones. I also have used nails to replace the hinge pin on a couple of my vintage Zippos. Zippo will replace hinges, though, if sent in to their repair clinic in Bradford. I've done that a couple times with older ones.

      @zachariasobenauf1895 talking about sinking in mud. Have you gotten one of the Zorro lighters that is machined entirely of brass? The hinges on those are actually part of the case itself, not an extra welded on part. They even have a small groove carved along the opening of the bottom case, where one puts the insert that fits a little rubber ring to help prevent fuel evaporation. They're a little on the heavier side as well. I really like them. Would be cool if Zorro made a solid copper one.

    Hmm, good idea with that rubber gasket. 🤔🙂
    I can cut something similar out at home, just wondering if leakage is really an issue with Zippo's?

    • @zippolyonsden1623
      @zippolyonsden1623  16 днів тому +1

      The fuel evaporates after a while. It doesn't really leak out of the case. Petrol lighters, like Zippos work off the fumes of the fluid. The idea with these rubber gaskets was to help with fuel evaporation. I went back to just using the felt pad that comes with the Zippo originally since I really didn't see much difference in evaporation. The only time fluid would actually leak from a Zippo is if it is overfilled with fluid. Some people use a small piece of a plastic sandwich bag to cover the bottom of the insert to help with evaporation.
