Hey sonic ! Yeah that’s a great technique. On my original sandwich bag trick video on my main channel. A few people actually commented that years ago also had good results just like u. Thanks for sharing buds !
The easy way to prevent or at least slow down evaporation is to get your fluid insert nice and warm, then rub paraffin wax all over it. When you reinsert it into the lighter body the wax creates a vaporproof seal.
without a Bag trick I have never had one leak in my pocket. I'm 66, I do the wick mostly the same way as you did here. However, I always use the felt. mostly to store an extra Flint, when I fill the lighter using the flint port, I insert the Nozzle into the flint port. filling until the felt is soaked, then using the vacuum accumulated in the Fill bottle, i stop squeezing, this sucks the excess fuel out of the lighter. I get about 3-5 days use depending on it's use rate.

I love this video. It changed everything about my zippo. Before, it wouldn't hold fuel for more than three days. After doing all of these tricks, it is now over a month half filled and still is holding fuel. Thank you for helping me love my zippo again!
Dude I landed on your video during some late night UA-cam, and damned if I didn’t get my old Zippo going. Turns out I only had about an inch of wick left haha! Got a new wick, packed it like you showed and it’s working great.
This is so clever. I never would have thought of this. I have my dad's old Zippo, that I love to use as it reminds me of him, but the fuel only lasted about 3 days and was driving me crazy, so I stuck it in a drawer. I have done as you suggested, unwadding the cotton and ess-ing the wick, plus the sandwich bag trick. I'm hoping this makes a difference so that I can use my dad's Zippo on a regular basis now. Thanks!
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors Well funny enough, the day after I did that, I came down with a bad cold and am still sick. Because I felt so bad, and needed to get well, I stopped smoking. So I haven't used the Zippo since I did the baggie trick. However, I just checked it, and it lit right up -- hasn't evaporated. So it seems to work just fine.
Just been looking at Zippos and ordered one yesterday after watching your videos. Videos are excellent and the comments from everyone are genius, nitrile glove trick is going on the list to try along with sandwich bag, I fear I am already becoming a Zippo geek 😮😂
I actually use freezer bag instead of sandwich bag. They are way more thicker and durable. I used the same bag for 6 months lol thanks man. Welcome to the zippo mafia. Glad your enjoying the hobby and that I was able to help
That is brilliant! I dont smoke or anything but I've always liked the sound that a zippo made when opened. I do tend to keep them filled with fluid but it would always disappear lol but I think this will seriously help in fluid retention
I gotta tell you... I've spent years (2 decades) thinking slim Zippos were just worthless. With this wick packing (no baggie) I'm now able to carry my slim Zippo ship's lighter. My adult daughter gets a useful lighter from her dad's service to the nation. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. These are very useful mods. I like my zippos, but as I am not a smoker, I have fallen back to older sealed lighters, primarily made by Evans as my goto's. Evans build quality beats the hell out of IMCO, IMO. These will hold fluid for a month or more, as the tanks are gasketed and sealed, and the lid mechanism forms a rudimentary seal around the wick. It won't last as long as a Douglas lighter, but then they don't cost as much either. Someday, I hope to land a Galter sealed AL lighter circa WW2.
Great video for the beginner. I also didn't say thank you on the live stream for plugging my channel. Very cool of you to do that. I am sharing this one for some newbies out there.
Thank you so much for showing this trick 😄 I was always anointed that my zippo dries out so fast! I always wondered what would be a normal time for a zippo to. Hold it's fuel over Time without using it.
Hey bro I watched this video like two weeks ago and I rewicked my 1935 replica your way with the factory "cotton" (without the sandwich bag trick) and it lasted 9 days. Very impressed. Today I filled two other cheap zippos with cotton bacon and ebay flints. Your videos helped a ton! I've been using clipper lighters for a while now but they aren't "fun"
Thanks !! I appreciate that. I can tell by your comment your gonna try this. So let me say now. Pack it loose near the the chimney or u will choke your wick
I rearranged the cotton like you said but decided to keep the felt pad and add a strip of parchment paper over it instead to the sandwich bag, It just made sense to keep the felt pad and seal it even further. Hope the fuel last longer than just 2 or 3 days.
As long as u Didnt pack it to tight should work fine. If u notice it’s having a hard time staying lit or is flickering out. U choked the wick with tight wadding. Let me know
Dear Fanatic. I see that you are using the gasfilled inserts. I myself got two of them but after a while they wouldn’t fire anymore. Even tho they weren’t out of gas. Any tips on how to revive them? Never had problems with the original fluid filled ones.
All these tricks are great ideas, but i bought a new brass zippo with a leather pouch about 3 years ago and i only refill it about every 9 days. I only smoke 5 cigarettes a day. The only thing I've done to it is trim the Wick. The flint will last about 60 days. Our Landfills don't need anymore disposable anything.
Wanna know the most pro tip on how to make your zippo never run out?. Buy a gallon of crown white gas camp fuel for 15 bucks. Keep a small squirt bottle around and refill it. Just give a guess at how many times you can refill a small zippo with a gallon. Burns the same I've had my gallon for 2 years maybe 3. Still haven't spent it all.
Thanks Mike! This is awesome. I just did the trick and will see how long it will last but i am excited already because my wire thinie was out to the side just like in your video so, this will work. Thanks bro.
So glad i found your video i have many zippos i use and ive been going thru fluid like crazy i knew there had to be a video on having fluid last longer so now i will grab the ones i like the best and begin the task of refilling. thanks for video.
There's another way to go. I bought a gallon of brand X naptha gas for about 10 bucks. I've been filling up my Zippo with that gallon for years and I've hardly even put a dent in it and it works just fine as lighter fluid.
I've tried this technique but still fluid evaporates quickly but last a longer than original cotton packing. Anyway I tried putting multipurpose food grade grease on the sandwich bag and I think it's way better now. Been using mine for 4 days now without refilling. Thanks for the tip man you're amazing!
No probs buds ! Thanks for leaving a comment. Let me know if u have any issues. Try not to pack the cotton tight near the chimney. Will clog the flow fluid.
I bought a bottom of the line Zippo and noticed that the fluid didn't last as long as my old one. I found out, under the felt, there was a giant open spot, no cotton. I didn't have anymore cotton so I scraped some off of some Q-tips. I also save "dead" Bic/other lighters for their flints, most will work in a Zippo
I have an old gasoline lighter, my father gave it to me, it is in a zinc case (Tie Muzhen 1162-1227), its insert has become unusable, the adhesive sealant has crumbled and the entire interior has fallen out, there is a copy of the zipper from the company (kantai), so it still works, although I use it with regular gasoline I filled it with such a layer of soot and soot that I can’t wash it off 🔥🔥🔥
Love your videos! I was thinking of taking a small cartridge case about 30 caliber or so cutting the right amount to glue in the underside of the lid. This would go around the wick and slow fluid evaporation coming from the wick!
U can try but 22 shell or 17 hmr shell really fits well in the chimney. 30 probably to big. I would just skip all this and buy a zorro insert with a chimney cap attached to the cam . If u wanted it on a zippo insert just switch cams
Hey, im sure someone has asked this already but i have a question. Im a new zippo owner and i watched videos on zippos before. As soon as i got my zippo i had put the fluid in it. I just came across this video and i am wondering if i can still repack the cotton with the fluid in. I know this is a bit of a dumb question though. If i cant, what should i do?
Hey buds welcome to the community. Alls u you have to do is pull the insert out take the felt pad off the bottom pull the cotton out let it sit on a plate for 1 hour and it should be dry after that. Maybe two hours.
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors Great, thank you for replying. I didn't expect for you to respond so quickly. I've really been enjoying your videos so far. Thank you again.
Brilliant idea to put a cut sandwich bag over the end if the insert. Some stores sell small ziplock bags and they actually fit exactly over the insert. Just cut about 3th off to make the bag less deep. I also made the feltpad a lot thinner so the lighter holds more cotton but you still have a felt pad. (Looks better and no cotton peeps out of the insert)
@@Mafioso1731 yeah u can put the felt back. That’s what I was doing originally. Untill I realized I could fit more fluid make it last longer if I took out.
Sometimes , not always instead of putting the Zippo fluid straight on the cotton balls I just flood the case ,say half way, then insert the lighter and let it slowly soak up.Then I put a bit more of fluid. I’ve tried a few ways but it’s the first time I’ve seen or heard of the sandwich bag trick. I’ll give it a go and see how it goes.👍🏼
I use a commercial rubber plug i got off Amazon ($5) to replace the zippo felt plug which does the same thing. In addition, i slip a ranger band over the outside of the zippo case covering the crack between the zippo lid and case preventing any evaporation. After these easy mods, my zippo lasts in excess of a week!
how did you put the wick back in from the bottom? im literally losing my mind edit:ok so i managed to do it although it really was very hard (it didn’t help that you did it off the camera, on your other vids too lol) i pushed the wick with my little finger and then pulled it up from the top with tweezers. before that i trimmed the wick, changed the flint, made stripes from the cotton balls, refilled and put on the sandwich bag on the bottom of the insert. we’ll see for how long it will last, hopefully longer than before. i got my first zippo i really love it but i have to refill it too often. anyways thank you for the tutorial🤝❤️🔥
Cut burned end and twist the one you created and take something thin so you will be able to catch it and pull out a bit i did it with toenail cutters/broken matches but something dull would work much better
Wow thanks for the tips, the lighter was awesome when I was out in unkind weather conditions but its longevity was its downfall for me…however it seems to be improved with these tips. Thanks
Thanks, is it advisable to use the sandwich bag and still use the rectangle strip that it came with ?? I did the method you did but I added the strip it came with still
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors man, I went from hating my butane insert to loving it from this video. It would never light consistently. Thanks a lot. It was like the old truck we did on gas station lighters to make the flame higher.
@@Zippofanatic77outdoorsSorry mixed the 2 videos. I watched one after another. Fixed my wick and butane zippos at the same time after watching both your videos haha.
It is the 100 year anniversary of the Peacock Hand warmers that use the exact same fuel. The same problems apply, but I'm starting to think a liquid fuel Zippo is better than a butane lighter for the purpose of starting the hand warmer. I already have the fuel, I just need to initiate the hand warmer reaction. The Zippo hand warmers are more difficult to start and typically run too hot, but some of the parts are sometimes interchangeable between Zippo and Peacock.
Had one of those new butane inserts and it didn’t last very long. Based on your video here I repacked my cotton. Without removing the wick I was able to snake bend it easily. One difference, I cut the felt at the bottom to half the thinness and reused it. Now all that’s needed is to gasket it and get some fluid…imagine it will now work like a charm…or you’ll be hearing from me! 😂
Well I did the hack…took forever to simply order in some fluid…LoL!!! Filled the sucker up only to find out that I need a new flint! Lucky I had some old Ronson flints in my basement…so I am in business and the flame burns brilliantly. Will see if I need the gasket, though I like the wax idea someone suggested.
Just got my second Zippo and stumbled across your vid's, love the tips and tricks. The second Zippo I picked up is one of the Armor series whereas my first one is a replica of one of the 1941 models. The hinge on the Armor is comparatively loose/has a lot of play whereas the Vintage has none. Is this normal?
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors I got the Brushed Chrome 41 for now since it’s my first Zippo. I really liked the design on it but I’m just going to get it later on.
I appreciate your video and I definitely unwrapped my cotton/rayon and repacked it as you suggested...but, the sandwich baggie...fail. My pipe insert is pretty tight and the sandwich baggie just rips and sticks out every single time i try to put the insert back in...had to do without...but, everything else helped. Thank you!
Hey man thank you so much for this! Using your wick method has dramatically improved the quality of flame and decreased the amount of fuel I was using. I was going through almost an entire 4oz can every 2 months for one zippo!! Unfortunately I couldn't get the bag trick to work. It keeps tearing through when I push the insert in the case. Perhaps the case is too tight? Either way, I'm hella happy. Thanks again!
Hey thanks Paul ! If your having problems with the bag trick it could be your using to much bag. Just gotta fit over the bottom with little flaps on the side. I use freezer bag now much thicker. I use the same one for months no rips. Or could be because your using a zippo from the 90’s and earlier. The inserts don’t have dimples on the sides. A little more square also which shreds the bag. Glad your getting better use out of your zippo. 4oz can lasts me 6 months. But I live in Canada so it’s very cold here which causes it to evaporate less.
Thanks for this. I finally got frustrated enough with going to use my Zippo and never having fluid to research it and now I know 1) it's a thing 2) there's an easy fix.
No problem ! Also if u want to last even longer. Throw out the rayon cotton and get organic vape wicking cotton. Absorbs more fluid. Or just get a butane insert. I like the new yellow flame personally.
Yeah no probs. Make sure u don’t pack it tight near the chimney. U will know u did if the zippo won’t light first strike consistently and flame will go out
Got a brass zippo last year for my birthday and had been refilling about ever week as a non smoker just using it for my fire place ect and just did this hopefully it lasts alot longer
Does repacking the cotton and wick like this make the flame extremely tall? After repacking my new Zippo I had to trim the wick due to the height of the flame. But I didn't repack my other new Zippo and it's flame is normal.
Tomorrow my first zippo (167 high polish Chromo) will arrive, I will use it for a while to see if it lasts me long enough or if it loses liquid, then I will use your trick. Nice video tutorial mate 👌🏻
Not a bad video not a bad homemade remedy I I guess Zippo makes a rubber tight fitting stopper that goes in the bottom of your Zippo lighter my nephew ordered 15 of them they work lovely have them in all of my lighters has a little trapdoor that you open to fill with your fluid and has a little place for an extra Flint!
One thing that works really well is to thread the inside of some stainless brake line, then cut to maybe 1/4 inch length. Insert a screw into it. Then cut a piece of thin stainless sheet metal to match the bottom of the tank, and drill a hole in it to accept the stainless brake line. Solder the brake line into the sheet metal, and then solder the sheet metal to the bottom of the lighter. Now all you have to do is unscrew the screw, and fill it up. It lasts forever, and it’s easy to remove solder if your zippo hasn’t been stolen by the time you need a new flint. I’m still working on anti-theft mechanisms
That usually happens when overfilled. The cotton can only absorb so much fluid. Once u go past the point it will start leaking. 7 second squirt. 10 seconds break. 5 seconds squirt
How many refills does the plastic last? I assume it get damaged by friction every time you take it out (and put it back in) to refill. I'm just curious.
That's what I did since my insert fits snug. One tight wrap around the sides with the stretchy brands of plastic wrap, then folded layers on bottom. Once stuffed into the bottom of the case, it should be pretty damn vapor tight.
Hey bro ! I think an Alaska man like yourself will enjoy it. I’m in Canada and I leave a zippo outside during the winter incase I forget mine. Nothing more reliable for the cold.
Why take out the flint, it must be broken-in afterwards or flint needs to be clocked 0 degrees to fit scraper wheel? Try adding kerosene to Zippo fluid to slow evaporation?
Yeah I don’t know why zippo let’s brand new inserts go out like that. Hope your newly packed up zippo is soaking up that fluid now. Yeah sandwich bag trick is awesome also stops your insert from sliding up
This is cool in that in most cases it doesn't require ordering or purchasing anything additional. But i wonder about something more absorbent than strips of cotton. Ditch the felt and incorporate the sandwich bag seal but also replace the cotton with something else.

If u just filled take the cotton out of will dry in like 20 mins. Naphtha evaporates fast when exposed to air. Also yes u can use regular cotton but I feel rayon is the better choice. It has more durability to the naphtha eating it away. If u want to go big , get wicking cotton for vapes. It organic and extremely absorbent

Dude I landed on your video during some late night UA-cam, and damned if I didn’t get my old Zippo going. Turns out I only had about an inch of wick left haha! Got a new wick, packed it like you showed and it’s working great.
Welcome back to the dark side Richard !
Thanks!
How’d it turn out
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors Well funny enough, the day after I did that, I came down with a bad cold and am still sick. Because I felt so bad, and needed to get well, I stopped smoking. So I haven't used the Zippo since I did the baggie trick. However, I just checked it, and it lit right up -- hasn't evaporated. So it seems to work just fine.
@@SurvivalistChick nice ! Lol hope u feel better
Or just get a butane insert for it. Only 16$
I gotta tell you... I've spent years (2 decades) thinking slim Zippos were just worthless. With this wick packing (no baggie) I'm now able to carry my slim Zippo ship's lighter. My adult daughter gets a useful lighter from her dad's service to the nation. Thank you!
Nice ! Glad u were able to get in good working shape. This way of packing really gets the job done.
I salute you sir. I bet you was an excellent mate!😊
Excuse me are an excellent mate.
The organising trick with the wick and the cotton was really neat!
Thanks ! Works really good
I think it is a great Idea . I am going to try it and I am sure it will last a lot longer than It has so far.
Thank you !
You are welcome!
No problem buds. Yeah those are all very nice lighters. I like all the old ones too. Just zippo is my passion
What about the Maratac Peanut lighters?

Yeah zippos are just pure class. Plus they have butane inserts now so there’s no excuse. But like u I prefer the fluid. Especially in the winter
this video is quality usefulness at the peak of the engineering efficiency curve. you earned a like and my subscription for this one.
Thanks !! I appreciate that. I can tell by your comment your gonna try this. So let me say now. Pack it loose near the the chimney or u will choke your wick
Pinching the lighter at the top helps as well. Pulling the insert in and out loosens it.
Let me know
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors It's working fine since last night. I"m keeping my fingers crossed the fuel last longer than a week. Thanks!
Just did this to my first zippo Ive ever had and it definitely helped i appreciate it a lot!
Great to hear! Helping zippo users around the world is what I love
Dear Fanatic. I see that you are using the gasfilled inserts. I myself got two of them but after a while they wouldn’t fire anymore. Even tho they weren’t out of gas. Any tips on how to revive them? Never had problems with the original fluid filled ones.
Yup I have videos on it. Use better butane or turn up the governor. I have videos for both
All these tricks are great ideas, but i bought a new brass zippo with a leather pouch about 3 years ago and i only refill it about every 9 days.
This what I've been noticing since i bought my first zippo thanks a lot man
Anytime!
Thank you for this sir, I'll try it out tomorrow.. the fluid evaporation has been bugging the hell out of me forever..
If your having problems with it after u try it. U packed the cotton to tight somewhere and are chocking off th wick. Just repack it a little looser.
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors , got it sir.. thank you again!
Thanks Mike! This is awesome. I just did the trick and will see how long it will last but i am excited already because my wire thinie was out to the side just like in your video so, this will work. Thanks bro.
Nice !! If u have problems with it probably cause it got packed to tight near the chimney. Easy fix. Happens to me once in a while
So glad i found your video i have many zippos i use and ive been going thru fluid like crazy i knew there had to be a video on having fluid last longer so now i will grab the ones i like the best and begin the task of refilling. thanks for video.
No problem lorrain ! Have any questions just ask
There's another way to go. I bought a gallon of brand X naptha gas for about 10 bucks. I've been filling up my Zippo with that gallon for years and I've hardly even put a dent in it and it works just fine as lighter fluid.
Yeah way cheaper
I've tried this technique but still fluid evaporates quickly but last a longer than original cotton packing. Anyway I tried putting multipurpose food grade grease on the sandwich bag and I think it's way better now. Been using mine for 4 days now without refilling. Thanks for the tip man you're amazing!
Sweet man glad your enjoying my the zip !
What fuel did they use in WW2 issue Zippo lighters? Great show thank you
Gasoline
Simple but very clever. Thank you sir.
I have an old gasoline lighter, my father gave it to me, it is in a zinc case (Tie Muzhen 1162-1227), its insert has become unusable, the adhesive sealant has crumbled and the entire interior has fallen out, there is a copy of the zipper from the company (kantai), so it still works, although I use it with regular gasoline I filled it with such a layer of soot and soot that I can’t wash it off 🔥🔥🔥
Soak it in gasoline it will take off the soot
Love your videos! I was thinking of taking a small cartridge case about 30 caliber or so cutting the right amount to glue in the underside of the lid. This would go around the wick and slow fluid evaporation coming from the wick!
U can try but 22 shell or 17 hmr shell really fits well in the chimney. 30 probably to big. I would just skip all this and buy a zorro insert with a chimney cap attached to the cam . If u wanted it on a zippo insert just switch cams
@Zippofanatic77outdoors just wanted to keep it Zippo as much as possible!

I actually use freezer bags because they are thicker and more durable

What if you put back that original white cover + the plastics bag?
@@Mafioso1731 yeah u can put the felt back. That’s what I was doing originally. Untill I realized I could fit more fluid make it last longer if I took out.
Do you think rubber gloves can do better? I am waiting for the evaporation of my fluid to test this trick, seems so great. Thanks for sharing!
Probably works. Give it a try. Others have said it does. But the rubber glove is grippy so it doesnt slide well and rips easily
Thank you for your videos, I’m going to buy 4 zippos to start my collection. You are the best zippo UA-camr out there.
Wow thanks for the kind words ! I appreciate it , I try my best to put out good content.
This video is DEFINITELY going to my "Favorite & Very Useful Videos" Playlist, Thank you from Germany Brother!!!🇩🇪🇺🇸💪!!! SUBBED!
Thanks ! U will be using your zippo at full efficiency now. Love from 🇨🇦. I have lots of other useful videos too.
Don't have sandwich bag, but i have cling wrap. Any plastic will do right?
Yeah buds cling wrap should be fine. Just make sure it’s a few layers. One thin piece of cling wrap will rip
how did you put the wick back in from the bottom?
im literally losing my mind
edit:ok so i managed to do it although it really was very hard (it didn’t help that you did it off the camera, on your other vids too lol) i pushed the wick with my little finger and then pulled it up from the top with tweezers.
before that i trimmed the wick, changed the flint, made stripes from the cotton balls, refilled and put on the sandwich bag on the bottom of the insert. we’ll see for how long it will last, hopefully longer than before. i got my first zippo i really love it but i have to refill it too often. anyways thank you for the tutorial🤝❤️🔥
100% focus
Or hemostats, or tweezers
Cut burned end and twist the one you created and take something thin so you will be able to catch it and pull out a bit i did it with toenail cutters/broken matches but something dull would work much better
BTW. Just put it in from the top.
Wow thanks for the tips, the lighter was awesome when I was out in unkind weather conditions but its longevity was its downfall for me…however it seems to be improved with these tips. Thanks

Thank you. Interesting methodic. I will try this out, because my zippo when lighting, doesn't hold flame for long( it burn only for 10-20 sec.
Sounds like it’s choked off with the cotton. No problem Andrew

get a butane insert for your Zippo. it will last months between refills without drying out.
I tried wrapping the felt in plastic, before i screwed it back, worked great🤩🤩
Good idea buds!
Havent herd from u. Must be working good haha

Depends how dry it was. New insert or havent filled in a long time. That’s good for the dry wick.
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors good to know, thanks!
Great tip. I've had a zip leak out in my pocket and burn my leg in just a few hours. That's why I quit using them. I'll try them again.
A regular sandwich bag yes I get one or two uses out of. But I use the bigger thicker freezer bags now and they last about 4-6 uses
Will this work with Ronson Typhoons?
Work with any petrol lighter
Can I use food plastic wrap film instead of a zip lock bag?
That's what I did since my insert fits snug. One tight wrap around the sides with the stretchy brands of plastic wrap, then folded layers on bottom. Once stuffed into the bottom of the case, it should be pretty damn vapor tight.
If I already been using my zippo, can I replace the ones that already have been in use with regular cotton balls ?
Yeah if u want
Great idea! I'll have to break my Zippo out of the drawer and try your trick.
Hey bro ! I think an Alaska man like yourself will enjoy it. I’m in Canada and I leave a zippo outside during the winter incase I forget mine. Nothing more reliable for the cold.
Why not use both the felt and the sandwich bag together?
Check my older videos that’s how I used to do it. It works fine that way also
I will use this trick!!! Badass mod! And also survival trick for the outdoors.
Yeah works good. Youll enjoy it. Zippos are perfect for survival. Have that fuel is game changing in the winter or wet months
Why take out the flint, it must be broken-in afterwards or flint needs to be clocked 0 degrees to fit scraper wheel?
Try adding kerosene to Zippo fluid to slow evaporation?
My findings? My wick was scrunched up jambed completely in the top of the lighter, didn't know about the sandwich bag trick, will try it.
