I was at the Santana concert just up the road at the SDSU open air theatre that night. The crowd was full of Padre fans & when Garvey hit the homer, Carlos came out with a “Cub-Busters” T-shirt, announcing the victory. The whole crowd went nuts! Such a great moment. I’ll never forget it ⚾️ 🎸
I was there too! Had tickets to game and Santana! Carlos actually announced the score: a stagehand gave him a note! Carlos pauses and read, .. Cubs 5 ( the place went silent ) San Diego Padres 7! 😎😎😎
I was 8 years old, taping this game for my older sister (God rest her soul - cancer would take her at the age of 10 in May 1985) and I remember jumping for joy when Garvey hit that homer.
I was 19 working the night shift in a bank building that housed KSDO radio in San Diego. Heard the call on the local Padres station and heard incessant car honkage the entire night after it was over!
STEVE GARVEY! Why not vote for this guy? He's a man of integrity and he wants to fix this disfunction. It's interesting that a word can change from disfunction to dysfunctional. Why the "y"s and additional letters? Lets protect the people that have a problem. This game was insane when I was a kid. I couldn't believe what I saw. Steve Garvey changed my life. He can change California.
Integrity? He’s a philandering douchebag who knocked up multiple women and has no relationship with several of the kids his irresponsible behavior produced. Thanks for the laughs.
Home Run Garvey! And There Will Be Tomorrow! Don Drysdale most underrated play by play man ever, and one of the few former players who became play by play instead of color
being a LONG time Cubs fan when they lost this series. I didn't cry in my beer being I was only 16. I would later cry in my soda pop, and Kool aid. LOL
@@averydaymond1560 I've been a Dodgers fan all my life including all the years he played. All of the write in votes he got in '74 ASG. I was one of them. The consistency, 200H, .300 BA, 100 RBIs, the consecutive game streak. But he just doesn't have the numbers for the HOF. How could he be a HOFer when Fred McGriff isn't in? You don't have to make an argument for players that belong. You hear their name BOOM HOFer: Jeter, Ortiz, E. Martinez etc. Current players Pujols, Cabrera, Trout, Kershaw.
@@bbigjohnson069 Ok you have an argument but uh Jeter? Jeter? Is BOOM? If you are fielding a PLAYOFF team and let’s say everyone is in their prime I’m picking Garvey over Jeter and it’s not even close. I guaranPhuckingtee you every manager in baseball history would pick Garvey over Jeter in a playoff scenario. That is where it counts, it’s that way in every sport. It’s the reason every football fan knows the name Lynn Swann, not because of his regular season numbers but because when it came playoff time he shined and got the job done.
Really? ..you felt like hurling an impotent statement like this fixes it ..thing about baseball is ..the better teams win the games ..if the Cubs were better ..they would have won 3/5 ..but ..they completely choked ..how does that happen ..being up 2-0 ??
The Cubs we're a better team at home, and under today's format this would have been a best of 7 with the Cubs having home field advantage. Would that have made a difference? We'll never know.
That was magnificent. It saddens me greatly that The Murph is no longer standing - such a history with that place.

@@MalEvansUSA😂 Good one!
I was 15 yrs old when this Garvey hit the homerun. Don Drysdale call is one the greatest calls ever made .
As a life long Cub fan - it was the worst sports moment (other than 2003 NLCS) of my life...Frey was crazy to have Smith even pitch to him

Yeah, that was a fantastic call. Cotto back to the wall ---- It's Gone.

One of the great and most memorable calls of any playoff game.

Greatest moment I witnessed at the "Murph".
Criminal that Garvey isn’t in the hall of fame.
Damn Garvey was a Monster in the clutch, he was Robbed of the Hall of Fame!!,
The HOF isn't for the great players, it's for the greatest players.
@@bbigjohnson069 Garvey played great when it counted. His playoff statistics are amazing.

look how fast the pitchers work. get on the hill and throw! love it
As bad as game 5 was for a Cubs fan, this game was even more heartbreaking; this was the one I really thought they were going to win.
Smith and Gossage were way ahead of their time. If young again they would do well in today's MLB.
I was at that game - thank God for Steve Garvey!!!!!
I was 13 on this day. It was the first time the Cubs broke my heart. 😭
I was 9 and was so excited when Jody Davis tied it. Then came the 9th...
@@paulkeilman3510 when I was a little kid I wanted a sniper to shoot Steve Garvey. When I was a kid!
3/4 of that great Dodger infield appeared in this game in different uniforms...Lopes Garvey and Cey
Steve Garvey! Steve Garvey! Steve Garvey! Steve Garvey!✊😀😁😃
I hope I will be at Petco park next time this happens. And it will.
Loudest crowd explosion ever in SD heard for miles
I was a little young at the time, and did not see this game live, but I am calling this the date when I bacame a Padres fan.
It's not so bad watching this now, this and other things were put to rest in 2016.
Garvey is a God
I can't believe what I just saw
I was at the game. We stood and screamed the entire game. A new malady was discovered called Padre Throat for all the hoarse people in San Diego.
Dude I got Padre throat when we swept the Dodgers, so far that was like the World Series for me when it was live
I was at this game! The most exciting ball game I have ever seen!!!
Do you have game 5?
Padres need to go back to brown and yellow uniforms
That’s great
Dean Wille Sadly, a modern version and not the epic Taco Bell uniforms they sported here. But at least the brown and yellow is back.
Did I see Steve Bartman leaning over the railing and taking Garvey's ball out of Cotto's glove?
Did I see the Detroit Tigers kicking the Padres team ass all over the field during the World Series?
The Cubs were the better team but we finally won it all and the Padres havent won in 50 years.

World Titles since the Padres came into existence: Cubs 1, Padres 0. World Series games won since the Padres came into existence: Cubs 4, Padres 1 8-)

Never understood the big deal with Gossage....
