This game was on a Friday night and I will never forget, my, mom picked me up from school and told me she had a huge surprise for me and I had just turned 13. My mom said to pack my suitcase and said I'm going to be staying at my aunt and uncle house for the weekend and actually til Monday and I would be off school Monday. Thank alone was surprise enough cause I was really close with my aunt uncle and 2 cousins. So my mom dropped me off at my aunt's in Farmington Hills. I walked in the door and my family was all in Tigers gear any aunt and uncle gave me a Kirk Gibson T-shirt and new Tigers cap, and then they told me I will be needing those for the game tonight and also for Sunday. OMG I was so shocked and excited and I teared up. My uncle got free tickets from his work for games 3 and 5. That was the best weekend of my life as a kid, and to this day as a 50 year old man, I still consider my uncle my hero
This series is so much more fun to watch than any game or postseason in today's game (2022). So much more strategy back then, not just power vs power. Almost never a dull moment in baseball back then. And Tiger Stadium is/was better to watch a game than any park today. It was the classic of classic ballparks. 👌
Me too, watching baseball since my birth. Proct of the 80s and 90s. Then frtedom died in form of Patriot Act, and now its all happening again...a slow war againstvthe population...the illusion of freedom will only eexist as long as it serves the evil ones interests. They are no longer in need of humans for labour... Well thats too bad. I love Jesus , Baseball ,free markets, holidays cars, and family dinners, and argue God given rights cannot be removed by crooked govts.... Bc they serve themselves, and this truth will spell the end. Worlld govt. Failed before, it will fail again.
Cool - same age. I could leave this playing all day everyday. I remember a friend coming to school the next day with a piece of the grass from the field and I thought it was the coolest thing.
I'm a Tigers fan going back to 1956, but frankly, I don't like that. It was rude. Similar to the 1957 Series when Yankee fans ridiculed Milwaukee with signs in the stands which said "Hickville." The Braves got the last laugh, winning a dynamic seven-game Series. Thankfully, the Tigers won in 1984, but the reaction of the Tigers fans was a bad example of bad sportsmanship. I didn't think we had a touch of New York in us. Sorry, Pads fans.
I don't love the "who cares" chant. It's sad, though it's interesting to see the Padres players reactions. I like how nobody said it for Champ Summers. He seemed to appreciate it. Champ was definitely a fan favorite when he played for the Tigers.
In reality, outside of San Diego, nobody wanted the Padres to be there. Everyone wanted to see a Tigers-Cubs World Series that year. It’s still annoying 38 years later that the Padres ruined the party. Lol
For everyone saying that the Cubs would have provided a better series, I tend to agree with you as a Padres fan. The problem was the Cubs left their bats in Chicago when playing the Padres in SD, outside of about 5 innings they were totally throttled by the Padres hurlers. Plus, if you can't catch ground balls you don't deserve to go to the series anyway. I blame the Padres starting pitching for keeping this series from being better. SD actually outhit the Tigers .263 to .257.
Love the old parks like Tiger stadium, Memorial Stadium, Wrigley precrenovation, old yankee stadium, the vet...any stsdium where the focus is on the field. No minor league crap in an American League or National League Park.. Theyve priced out too many baseball fans, and try to make it a theme park.. I miss stadiums ...Oriole Park in. A Hole, the old Memorial Stadium was grand, at the higest point in the whole Eastbside, in a neighborhood.. Sad to see this communist takeover from "within". Cant wait to play ball in the spring.
But now non baseball fans have a reason to go to the baseball game. I worked several games at Tiger Stadium on the broadcast crew, many as the booth A2. Talk about a great place to view a game.
Curious how you can jump to "communist takeover"? I mean, if you really want to go there, I would say your statement that "they've priced out too many baseball fans, and try to make it a theme park" epitomizes the movement of neoliberal capitalism as capital tries to commodify everything, hence a move AWAY from baseball fans to theme park where, as another points out, "now non baseball fans have a reason to go to a baseball game".

Great Story
Awesome story!!
Wow a dream come true
try to get this story published.
what a awesome memory for you thank you for sharing
I'm watching this again in 2021 and still get goosebumps. Bless you boys.!!!!! 84 Tigers.
2:06 Ozzie Virgil got a smattering of applause, and was spared the really loud "WHO CARES?" Ozzie was the first black player for the Tigers in 1958.

You are absolutely correct!

Me too! Love seeing old Tiger stadium. Great memories

@@chadgietzen4295 I'm from 1976
the opening with Vin and Joe boy you sure hope the other guy took a breath mint
The Who Cares chant when the Padres were introduced was classic!
Loved it

Note, though, that when Champ Summers (a former Tiger who was popular when the Tigers), he got cheers!

Baseball was so good back then. You knew all the players. Today you barely know anyone on the rosters
I prefer the game of baseball ⚾️ from 40 yrs ago myself I was very young, my grandpa was still alive and use to take me to the games
CBS Radio:
Jack Buck, Brent Musburger & Win Elliot
Padres Radio:
Jerry Coleman & Dave Campbell
Tigers Radio:
Ernie Harwell & Paul Carey
Man Vin and Joe are awfully close to each other there at the start. Haha.
Those booths aren’t as big as you think
Love the commercials
This was the day after my 12th birthday oh the memories
Great catch by the under appreciated Chet Lemon.
Wow. 35 years ago as of 2019. Ancient history these days.
Tigers are now a cursed franchise.
I was there! Sitting with the Bleacher Creatures.
Umpires (Game 3)
HP Bruce Froemming (NL)
1B Rich Garcia (AL)
2B Paul Runge (NL)
3B Mike Reilly (AL)
LF Doug Harvey (NL) (CC)
RF Larry Barnett (AL)
Wilcox had a classic windup
This coverage was amazing... baseball needs to return to nbc... baseball on fox with joe buck is straight garbage
Agreed! Buck sucks!!!
I was there
It's almost 40 years later and I'm still stunned that SD won a game against that Tiger juggernaut.
Tigers fans chanting "WHO CARES" as each Padres player is announced, but cheering for Champ Summers
Champ summers used to play for Detroit tigers
@@StFidjnr Yes, I know.
Can Vin and Joe stand any closer to each other?!!
I noticed they're sharing a microphone for some reason.
Chet Lemon's catch off Terry Kennedy in the 7th at 2:33:30 has never been given the notice it deserves.
later sparky anderson calls this catch is 'routine'
2:33:00 and 2:35:13 - Vin Scully - fortune teller !
Scully was awesome!

2:53:15 someone yelling at former MSU Spartan Steve Garvey: "Hey Steve! Go Blue!" 😄
HA, 35 and 5, and never looked back!!
Vin Scully (PBP) & Joe Garagiola (C)
I notice the black ballplayers shook everyone's hands for the Padres, but after Garvey, the white guys didn't.
WHO CARES!?
I just watched a little of this in the 2nd inning, is that Bruce Froemming umpiring home plate?
less than years later Wilcox would be released mid-season by the Seattle Mariners with a 0-8 record.
This was a microcosm of Milt Wilcox's season - gutting it out with a sore arm.
So in 1984 the announcers don't social distance one bit🤣🤣🤣
came looking for this comment and I was not disappointed.

You started out admirably but had to politicize the comment with your bullsh*t; classic ignorance at its most persistent....

this world series was nothing to the world series that would be played 2 years later between the mets and red sox
Get outta here!
