Thank the media for bitching. So the next year the World Series was on NBC, it followed an NFL doubleheader. ABC carried the last one to date (game six in 87)

Growing up as a Tigers fan, I, too miss Tiger Stadium, too, Adam. But one of the definitive reasons Tiger Stadium had to go was on the screen when Parrish homered in the seventh inning. They showed the Tiger clubhouse celebrating. It was a cramped clubhouse without much room. As a sports writer in the 1970s, I knew that clubhouse. The dugouts were small and cramped. The toughest thing for me is that I've gotten used to Comerica Park. It's actually a fair park for both hitters and pitchers.
yes i too miss tiger stadium the smell of moldy piss and 5$ beer took my now 3 grown children to a game in 96? gibby was back we sat in center field bleachers nice guy gave me two free tickets still cost me two days pay but i loved it
I just have to point out Fred J aminson's comment in this thread as being the biggest piece of shit in America. Having said that... I covered the Tigers for a radio station there in 1987, operated the scoreboard in 1997, and played in an exhibition baseball game there in 2001 just before it closed as part of Detroit's 300th anniversary. And didn't treat people like Fred did, ever.
The music theme, the World Series, & just everything brings back so many memories of how great baseball was when I was growing up. I was 10yrs old in '84. The Tigers dominated the Padres.
It is kind of nice to see Gossage, the ultimate swaggering hard-throwing relief ace, get a dose of humble pie here. It's just too bad it didn't happen when he was with the Yankees.
@@SeanP7195 Why not we had Vietnam won if Congress hadn't gone back on our word to back the South after Nixon resigned the Viet Cong never would have taken over. The Commies agreed to Paris Peace talks..but we fucked the South and totally abandoned them and left them without military aid.
Loved Vin Scully's call of the game and Gibson's home run off Gossage. Classic. But it also reminds of the great days of Ernie Harwell on the local Detroit radio broadcast. Ernie is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore of broadcasters in my book. IMO he's the best to ever do it.
It's amazing. Don Zimmer, Tom Lasorda, Dick Williams and Roger Craig were all on the same team. I bet the Dodgers had some great bench conversations in those days because none of those guys played.
One of the BEST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE! I ran down the streets screaming into the ran that night! Oh thank you GOD for that great moment! But of course, BLESS YOU BOYS!
As an American League fan I was rooting for the Tigers, of course, but looking back all these years that version of the Padres was a really fun team. Lot of characters. Only good for one year, but what the heck. They got to the World Series. The Tigers could be looked at as a kind of disappointment. Not for 1984, but they should have won more than one World Series with the talent they had.
Vin Scully was nearly 60 years old at the time of THIS game back in '84…..and incredibly, he's STILL broadcasting baseball for the Dodgers….he goes back to when the Dodgers were in Brooklyn!……thank God for You Tube and treasures like NBC Baseball and the legendary Vin Scully.
I was there. Tore up the field after Larry Herndon caught the last out. It started raining almost immediately after the catch. I just instinctively went down on the field without even asking my Uncle. I grabbed about 4 feet of sod by a foot and folded it up and there was no security that confronted me. On the way to the car a lady asked for some of it, so I tore off a good 18 inches and gave it to her. The rest of it, I planted in my backyard. I was almost 13 years old.
I was a young man of 29 years, when myself, two of my good friends, and one’s father attended this game. It was electric in the old ball park. Gibson crushed both of his HRs!!!! No doubters. One of the great memories of my life.
I was 17 and I was there with my older brother and parents. We were on the upper deck of left field. There were riots afterwards as we walked back through downtown to the tunnel bus back to Windsor, Ontario. Mostly peaceful and friendly riots! One of the greatest memories I have! Bless you boys!
Me too. Used to love sitting in the RF upper deck, near the four poll. Sometimes, I could get seats in the front row, where you were actually over the field. Could heckle an opposing right fielder, really easy. Heck, you were so close to the field, in so many places.......great old stadium (despite the obscured view seats).
Reason why I have so much respect for Vin Scully and Earnie Harwell is they shut up and let the fans do the talking. The emotion of the crowd is so much more captivating then some cheese ball announcer. TIGERS IN 14'!!!!
The very best thing that can happen to you as an 8 year old boy is to get a day like this. Now I’m about to turn 45. Sure would be nice to have one more day like this someday!
@Midnight Owl When Templeton first came up, he was a great player all-around. He had 100 hits from both sides of the plate in one of his early seasons in the late 1970's. For a few years, he was a feared hitter. Supposedly, he got lazy.
Wiggins batted .364, so he did his job. And it didn't help that McReynolds was hurt. But yes, Martinez & Brown were horrid. But OTOH, this was my Tigers' year, and I doubt the Cubs would have beaten them, though it might have been a better series.
So Alan Trammell is a Hall of Famer, but you can’t really have Trammell in the Hall of Fame without Lou Whitaker right beside him. They came into the majors at the same time, played more games as the middle infield than any one else in baseball history, they won Gold Gloves together, had almost identical career hitting stats (both over 2,300 hits), were both a part of this powerhouse World Series champion team and almost retired at the same time, all the while playing 20 year careers for the same team. If Trammell is in the Hall of Fame, Sweet Lou should be too.
This was the last WS game played outdoors in the afternoon. 3 years later, the Cards and Twins game 6 was played at the Metrodome in the afternoon. All WS games have been at night ever since.
@1.42.00 I can hear the upper bleachers in center field with one their creatively insane and profane chants. It starts out with one side yelling, "Less Filling!". Then the other side responds, "Tastes Great!". It goes like this back and forth like that a few times, then on cue it switches to, "F...You!" , "Eat S,,t!" Oh those upper deck "bleacher creatures" at Tiger Stadium. When things really got rockin' loud. they would stomp their feet, which made the whole stadium rumble and the upper deck centerfield camera shake. The sound of the rumbling floor would bounce out of the lower deck bleachers and project onto the field.
I spent many a ballgame at Tiger Stadium in the '60s. Back then, my grandmother from Germany, who immigrated to Detroit in 1949 after the war, became a Tiger fan and took me to so many games, I can't remember them all. Tiger Stadium was such a beautiful ballpark, all in forest green, and box seats back then were $3. Reserved seats, $2. Vin Scully, the master of silence during a big moment, didn't say a word for more than a minute and a half after Kirk Gibson's eighth-inning homer. And when he did, he commented about the discussion at the pitcher's mound over whether to intentionally walk Gibson or pitch to him. We all miss Vin. He was truly a poet.
I'm from Detroit, and I was 3 years old when this happened! I remember when my family and I were in a town called Frankenmuth, and my mom told me stories that the World Series was heard on the PA system in one of the places there! It was an awesome time I must say!
Sparky couldn't believe it! He was yelling to Gibby, " They're going to pitch to you, they're going to pitch to you!" My most memorable/favorite Detroit Tiger moment!! Wow!!
That Padres lineup was pretty weak looking to me. At the same time, the Tigers were loaded and had won over 100 games that year. Alan Trammel, Lou Whittaker, Lance Parrish, Kirk Gibson....their lineup was stacked from top to bottom. The Padres never really had a chance.
sldl04 the Cubs were actually supposed to be in that world series but the padres were no slouch, the '84 Tigers were one of the best teams of all time though.
sldl04 no they didn’t. But they had some hitters though. A little older than you’d like in most cases but their real problem was their starters sucked. To this day I’m not sure how they hell they beat the cubbies. Damn curse!!!
I agree it should definitely have been the Cubs playing the Tigers in 84, but if it did end up being the Cubs, Detroit could of lost, but it ended up being the Padres. Detroit definitely deserved this victory that year. The team was undeniably. Going 35-5 in 40 games is outstanding to do. When they did that, you knew they would have the championship.
Whoa 😳.. Padres had a weak lineup? Tony Gwynn Steve Garvey Craig Nettles That’s a decent core and a great defense at the corners. If they held on to Winfield they may have actually won a title... love those ‘84 uni’s!
The '84 Tigers have to rank up there as one of the top teams, or possibly the top team, over a single season in the last 50 years. They were just like a runaway freight train that year.
'68 team wasn't too bad, either. They won a lot of games in the ninth innings, especially in Detroit. Had an lp record "The Year of the Tiger" that was a lot of fun listening to.
@@OneLastHitB4IGoTru dat. ‘68 Tigers beating Bob Gibson in game 7 is the MLB equivalent to the 1980 miracle on ice. That messed Gibson up for a long while after.
I pass what was Tiger Stadium nearly everyday on Michigan Ave. Its crazy to see an empty plot of land there. Looks so small, I cant believe it once held a mighty stadium there.
I watched this year of Tiger Baseball from start to end. I was born in 68 a few weeks after that WS. my dad died in july of 84 so I remember that year quite well. Went to a game a few weeks later when we went back home to Detroit after the funeral just to get away, and watched Lance Parrish park one on the lumberyard across the street from the park. One of my most vivid memories from when I was a kid.
I was a youngster who saw the Royals win in 1985 and was so happy to see us win again in 2015, but this was after two decades plus of 90 plus losses and such a debacle and futility. I felt like nothing was ever going to happen, or nothing would ever turn the tide. So, my thought is, you never know. Baseball can be a strange game. Things change.
You will definitely see it even though they're going through a slow process a rebuild but they will get there and what it all.... now the Lions winning a Superbowl your chance of getting struck by lightning are better don't hold your breath
Vin Scully and Joe garagiola or however the spelling goes. But they are 2 of my favorite announcers. I was 8 years old and watched every tigers game that was on tv. Get to the world series and my favorite announcers george Kell and al kaline got the snub. It was such a special time and I wish they were the ones calling play by play. That being said scully and company did a great job.
Honestly the 80's were the best years to be a baseball fan- Tiger Stadium, Old Comiskey, Yankee Stadium.... names like Gibson, Molitor, Yount, Clemens, McGwire, Brett, Ripken... it was so good and had legendary announcers like ernie and colorful owners like Bill Veeck in Chicago (loved Disco Demolition night) and Steinbrenner in New York - I feel old typing this but it was a special part of my childhood. "And there it goes! For Michigan State and all of Tigerdom!" Gotta love it!And what a wonderful rendition of the national anthem by the Univ. of MichiganMen's Glee Club!
Great game! I was at the game before right over the Padres dugout...Tram came SO close to hitting 3 home runs...I got to meet Stan Musial at the game and he signed my program...total CLASS...the broadcast team is top notch..great to watch and listen to!!
damn i miss that field
Growing up as a Tigers fan, I, too miss Tiger Stadium, too, Adam. But one of the definitive reasons Tiger Stadium had to go was on the screen when Parrish homered in the seventh inning. They showed the Tiger clubhouse celebrating. It was a cramped clubhouse without much room. As a sports writer in the 1970s, I knew that clubhouse. The dugouts were small and cramped. The toughest thing for me is that I've gotten used to Comerica Park. It's actually a fair park for both hitters and pitchers.
Good memories in that dump.
yes i too miss tiger stadium the smell of moldy piss and 5$ beer took my now 3 grown children to a game in 96? gibby was back we sat in center field bleachers nice guy gave me two free tickets still cost me two days pay but i loved it
So do i great memories there!!!!!
Lance Parrish - nothing like a monster behind the plate. Detroit had it so good.
I agree. And for that reason I agree with Goose’s decision to shake off Kennedy’s 4-fingers & “go after” Gibson with 1st open.
Remember watching games on TV with George Kell in summer that was great summer moments and Erie Harwell on radio Wjr great times
It did ... 1981 loss to Dodgers
Ira Haimowitz And the Brett HR in the 1980 ALCS.
......and the Pine Tar Game just a season earlier in 83 also by George Brett.
Alan Trammel is just a good shortstop as Cal Ripken. If you look at the stats they are very similar
+justin c Ripken is way overrated because of the streak.
+justin c lousy manager
Mike Blarney which player
Alan Trammel should be there as well as Jack Morris who won more games than any other pitcher in the 80's
And now he's in the HOF. It's so great to see a wrong get righted. It gives me faith in this world.
Rules for Living: 1) NEVER pitch to Kirk Gibson in the World Series with the game on the line.
Rule 3) Never engage in a land war in Asia
Rule 6) Somedays your the bat, some days your the ball !
LOL "Rules for Living" (guffaw)
7) Never fight a war against the Russians in the winter.

Why not we had Vietnam won if Congress hadn't gone back on our word to back the South after Nixon resigned the Viet Cong never would have taken over.
The Commies agreed to Paris Peace talks..but we fucked the South and totally abandoned them and left them without military aid.
Wow - Tiger Stadium. Talk about memories.
My GOD this game brings back great memories.
Love the shot of Thurmond after Gibson's first homer. Tigers ran over San Diego's starters in that series.
Alan Trammell was named the MVP of the World Series.
No Hernandez the relieve pitcher was MVP
Damian Martinez Hernandez was AL MVP in 1984 as well as the CY Young Winner. Trammell was MVP of the World Series.
Damn. I remember this game like it was yesterday
Now if only the 2014 Tigers can recreate the magic and 'ROAR' as they did in '84!
BLESS YOU BOYS!
Or '24 Tigers. Good job clinching the WC tonight
@@irwinfletcher8440And just yesterday 10/02/2024 they beat Houston to advance to the ALDS against Cleveland.
World Series in the daytime as it’s meant to be! Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola. Baseball as I remember it 👍
Chad Quick: Yea, I couldn’t stand it when ABC hosted it. Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell were horrible. Al micheals made it bearable.
A day game in the world series with Vin Scully on the microphone....how lucky we were...
I was a young man of 29 years, when myself, two of my good friends, and one’s father attended this game. It was electric in the old ball park. Gibson crushed both of his HRs!!!! No doubters. One of the great memories of my life.
That was one of the best national Anthems I ever heard! Mitch Miller would be proud!
You can read Gossage's lips at 2:11:45 saying "Let's go after him". I think Custer said the same thing.
kevbo mevbo: Custer didn’t have a chance. Goose? He blew it!
Gibson and then Parrish? I don’t know. Pick your poison. I respect Goose’s call.
19:19 Joe mentions Gates Brown... one of the best pinch hitters ever to step up to the plate.
Reason why I have so much respect for Vin Scully and Earnie Harwell is they shut up and let the fans do the talking. The emotion of the crowd is so much more captivating then some cheese ball announcer. TIGERS IN 14'!!!!
This game was played on a Sunday afternoon at the same time as the late NFL games that day (4:00PM Eastern). We will never see that happen again.
The very best thing that can happen to you as an 8 year old boy is to get a day like this.
Now I’m about to turn 45. Sure would be nice to have one more day like this someday!
2:12:30 One of the biggest moments in tigers History. Kirk Gibson puts the nail in the coffin
When you have guys like Gwynn, Garvey, Templeton, Kennedy & Nettles, and yet your hitting star is Kurt Bevacqua, that's a problem.
Midnight Owl Dick Williams should have made some lineup changes. Martinez and Brown were atrocious in this series.
@Midnight Owl When Templeton first came up, he was a great player all-around. He had 100 hits from both sides of the plate in one of his early seasons in the late 1970's. For a few years, he was a feared hitter. Supposedly, he got lazy.
“Kurt f**king Bevacqua couldn’t hit f**king water if he f**king fell out of a f**king boat.” - Tommy Lasorda
Well said. Padres never showed up for this series. They spent all their coins against Cubs.
It goes like this back and forth like that a few times, then on cue it switches to, "F...You!" , "Eat S,,t!"
Oh those upper deck "bleacher creatures" at Tiger Stadium. When things really got rockin' loud. they would stomp their feet, which made the whole stadium rumble and the upper deck centerfield camera shake. The sound of the rumbling floor would bounce out of the lower deck bleachers and project onto the field.
I may not be a hall of famer but I've had some hall of fame moments.
~ Kirk Gibson
My God. I was 26 years old then. I still feel the effects of that wonderful summer.
it was unbelievable from the start, even the buzz from Lakeland was that something special could happen
man, the memories. I was 11 years old.
I'm from Detroit, and I was 3 years old when this happened! I remember when my family and I were in a town called Frankenmuth, and my mom told me stories that the World Series was heard on the PA system in one of the places there! It was an awesome time I must say!
Did you eat the famous chicken?
I was in a pool hall in Galveston, TX shooting pool, wearing my Tigers hat watching this. Sad to say I was the only one that reacted when they won.
The man providing the VO for the opening spiel is veteran VO artist Les Marshak.
Sparky couldn't believe it! He was yelling to Gibby, " They're going to pitch to you, they're going to pitch to you!" My most memorable/favorite Detroit Tiger moment!! Wow!!
"They dont wanna walk you!... they don't wanna walk you... Hey (wink) use this (swings arms like he's batting)" classic Sparky moment.
I was in the outfield upper deck by left field. People were throwing turf up to us as souvenirs after the win. Mine was planted in my mom's backyard.
My neighbor went as well.and they got a piece of the sewer system. A green type plate . 😄
I watched the whole game. What a great season that was - remember it like yesterday. Tigers were ROLLING.
World Series games that fall on Saturday day should be afternoon games.
''Ya, Don't walk walk him, Don't walk him, Don't walk him, Hey Rodger, he didn't wanna walk him Hahahahaha''. Love you Sparky
Sadly, we will never see an afternoon World Series game again.
To hit a home run like that, for the team that you watched growing up in Michigan. Doesn't get much better than that.......
Until 1988 called....
Robert Johnson The 84 Padres had a great bullpen, especially in the NLCS. The starting pitching was okay, but not on the level of Detroit.
Tony Gwynn
Steve Garvey
Craig Nettles
That’s a decent core and a great defense at the corners.
Agreed!!!!
This was the last world series day game
My dream is to see the tigers win a world series in my life time, I was born in 1985 :(
+EL Jim O 1985 It will happen, man. MY Detroit Tigers!
EL Jim O 1985 you’re going to have to wait a while. Blame big poppie and his damn grand slam. Damn it!!
1984 all over again when baseball was our great pastime. Pretty cool.
Man, old Tiger Stadium sure looks great, I wish I could've gone there for a game before they tore it down.
Sat on the visiting dug out or on deck circle for many years there! Miss that place big time!!!!!!
it was a great stadium. Bleachers in center were party central. $4 seats
Ikr I was 9 yro. But it should be rule that the home town guys get to call the game on nat TV ffs
Damn! I had forgotten how loaded the Padres were.
95% of the people who read about, thought about, looked at, or even saw any of this World Series wished it was the Cubs vs. the Tigers.
Well that just goes to show you still have to win it on the field
Cub fans get over yourselves.
@@bartleby2012 - I'm not a Cubs fan, just stating a fact.
Cubs would have given the ‘84 Tigers a much better match. The ratings would have crashed through the ceiling.
Wow, thanks for post. This is awesome.
Please respect the great Vince Scully! Never says a word and lets the tv audience feel like they are in the stadium for the final out
Honestly the 80's were the best years to be a baseball fan- Tiger Stadium, Old Comiskey, Yankee Stadium.... names like Gibson, Molitor, Yount, Clemens, McGwire, Brett, Ripken... it was so good and had legendary announcers like ernie and colorful owners like Bill Veeck in Chicago (loved Disco Demolition night) and Steinbrenner in New York - I feel old typing this but it was a special part of my childhood. Love the fans running onto the field LOL You'll never see stuff like that again.
Sorry , the sixties were the best
22:17 Sparky telling Gibby "Go and take a curtain call."
Jason Garfield Bardy I think Anderson was still ticked at how Kurt Bevaqua celebrated his game two HR.
I am a cub fan since early 80s. When the Padres beat the cubs in the nlchamp I also become a tiger fan. I was so happy tigers won.
I was at the game before this one right over the Padres dugout...Tiger stadium was soooo old and soooo cool!!!
