    2:12:33 Vin Scully: "And There It Goes!!" Most memorable Tiger home run of my lifetime. I was 13 then and I appreciated a legend in Vin Scully, while we Tiger fans had another legend in the late Ernie Harwell.

      Not that much difference, as this is about 2 hours and 15 minute game, with all the commercials removed. With the commercials included, this is probably a 3 hour game. The average game today is 3 hours 2 minutes.

      Thank the media for bitching. You see, on this day the 49ers lost their only game of the season on a Gary Andersen field goal, never mind it was only a single header game and flex scheduling would be 30 years off, it was still "abhorrent" to the mighty media that the World Series would be on during a slate of NFL games. So the next year the World Series was on NBC, it followed an NFL doubleheader. ABC carried the last one to date (game six in 87)

    My mom, my two brothers and I were in the lower centerfield bleachers for game 4 and game 5. It is still the fondest memory I have of my troubled youth. It was so rare we did anything as a family as our father was out of the picture. As teens my brother's and I were so lost and this was the greatest escape of our youth.
    I dont think any of us realized for years how lucky we were that our mom (who ordered tickets through the Free Press) had ordered not one set but tickets for two games. Gibson was just a beast and I remember when he hit his second home run in the eighth we thought the upper deck was going to come down on us the stadium was shaking that much😮😮😮... 😅😅😅!
    I miss those days, life was tough, but it was also wonderfully simpler. Thanks momma😊

      It may not have been the greatest HR in World Series history, but all things considered, it was by far the most satisfying. The media hype surrounding the Padres after they fluked their way into the playoffs and pulled an even bigger fluke over the Cubs, was insufferable. Especially the ex Yankees who wouldn't STFU about Steinbrenner, (who Nettles out and out accused of murdering Thurman Munson.) Goose refusing to walk Gibson, and Sparky laughing at the Padres for that debacle was as satisfying as Bautista's bat flip.

    • @Aztecism
      @Aztecism 6 місяців тому

      @@CGMedia2023Fluked by the Cubs? After that Game 1 anomaly the Cubs bats went to sleep, not to mention the Padres and Cubs split their season series down the middle, they were more evenly matched than people think. Plus, they cruised to the NL West title, much like the Tigers did.

    I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was twelve years old and the game aired on a Sunday afternoon. I was a Dodger fan, so I didn't really care who won...at first. However, as the series progressed, I started rooting for the Padres. Well, they got thumped! Not only in this game, but in Game 3 and Game 4. They didn't get out of Tiger Stadium alive! Watching this game again, I forgot how intense stadium fans were back then. The Padres in those brown and yellow uniforms, appeared soft in that environment. The uniforms were nice, mind you, but they just seemed like a soft West Cost team going up against a hardnose and hungry Midwestern team. Also, I love how the game was played back then. A lot more hits and stolen bases, as opposed to home runs and strike outs....Bring back stirrups and high socks PLEASE!!!

      Growing up as a Tigers fan, I, too miss Tiger Stadium, too, Adam. But one of the definitive reasons Tiger Stadium had to go was on the screen when Parrish homered in the seventh inning. They showed the Tiger clubhouse celebrating. It was a cramped clubhouse without much room. As a sports writer in the 1970s, I knew that clubhouse. The dugouts were small and cramped. The toughest thing for me is that I've gotten used to Comerica Park. It's actually a fair park for both hitters and pitchers.

Only good for one year, but what the heck. They got to the World Series. The Tigers could be looked at as a kind of disappointment. Not for 1984, but they should have won more than one World Series with the talent they had.

I just instinctively went down on the field without even asking my Uncle. I grabbed about 4 feet of sod by a foot and folded it up and there was no security that confronted me. On the way to the car a lady asked for some of it, so I tore off a good 18 inches and gave it to her. The rest of it, I planted in my backyard. I was almost 13 years old.

    So Alan Trammell is a Hall of Famer, but you can’t really have Trammell in the Hall of Fame without Lou Whitaker right beside him.
    They came into the majors at the same time, played more games as the middle infield than any one else in baseball history, they won Gold Gloves together, had almost identical career hitting stats (both over 2,300 hits), were both a part of this powerhouse World Series champion team and almost retired at the same time, all the while playing 20 year careers for the same team.
    If Trammell is in the Hall of Fame, Sweet Lou should be too.

Then the other side responds, "Tastes Great!". It goes like this back and forth like that a few times, then on cue it switches to, "F...You!" , "Eat S,,t!"
    Oh those upper deck "bleacher creatures" at Tiger Stadium. When things really got rockin' loud. they would stomp their feet, which made the whole stadium rumble and the upper deck centerfield camera shake. The sound of the rumbling floor would bounce out of the lower deck bleachers and project onto the field.

    I spent many a ballgame at Tiger Stadium in the '60s. Back then, my grandmother from Germany, who immigrated to Detroit in 1949 after the war, became a Tiger fan and took me to so many games, I can't remember them all. Tiger Stadium was such a beautiful ballpark, all in forest green, and box seats back then were $3. Reserved seats, $2. Vin Scully, the master of silence during a big moment, didn't say a word for more than a minute and a half after Kirk Gibson's eighth-inning homer. And when he did, he commented about the discussion at the pitcher's mound over whether to intentionally walk Gibson or pitch to him. We all miss Vin. He was truly a poet.
