That was Harvard knowledge on an elementary level of understanding. Job well done. I did mine via Whatsapp video with my big brother who was in Haiti. He was as thorough as this narrator, telling me the in and out of every move, every part, why respecting torquing direction, and using Honda parts only. He passed away 8 months later from covid. I lost a true mentor, a brother that anyone would have dreamed of having. A genius, a true mechanic, he was 62. He taught me how to ride and fix em in the early 80s. RIP Luckner, you will forever be missed
Thanks for the compliment. I am saddened by the loss of your brother. Your brother and I took mechanics seriously. My narrative approach comes from a career of 55 years that included seven years of instructing young adults at automotive/diesel mechanics and welding. As for motorcycle experience, I began at age 14...I have started a new (second) channel last month with strictly motorcycle content: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Please join us at the new channel. With sufficient viewer interest and subscribers, I will continue to produce content like this video.
That was a wonderful video. I really enjoyed it and was bummed when it was finished. I like the precision and skill, I learned from a guy with that type of movement of hands and precision. Well done! Thank you and I’ll probably watch again before I rebuild my xr.
Thanks much for the feedback! I opened a motorcycle channel that includes this content and more on the XR650R. Join us there, your participation will be valued: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel.
Glad this was valuable, thanks for the feedback!...I'm rolling out the "Motorcycle Tech and Travel" UA-cam channel (@motorcycletechandtravel) to expand dirt, dual-sport and adventure motorcycle coverage. If the viewer response is good, I'll focus on adventure motorcycle riding and an in-depth dive into maintenance, repairs and restoration. Your subscription and comments there would be appreciated.
47:23 Damn thats impressive #'s 😮 I ride a 93 xr650l i had to replace the counter shaft from stock sprocket wear... ive done alot to it but feel an upgrade to an R is needed.. the frame is on its way out already weilded the kick stand on from where it ripped outta the frame. I think a log j cleared one time was the culprit of that
I understand the countershaft issue. I will likely replace my XR650R's shaft during a future bench rebuild, as this engine puts out a lot of torque. There are distinct differences between our frames, although the XR650L does come as a plateable, dual-sport motorcycle. U.S. XR650Rs require a conversion for dual-sport use and can only be street licensed at states that allow these conversions.
Hello Moses, I've been reading your stuff on the forum for a few years now. Can you please give me your thoughts, as to why a xr650r, could be getting oil in the airbox, from the crankcase breather, and on the carburetor, making the throttle sticky, and clogging the pilot circuit, making it run lean, and rev out on its own? I clean it, and then it's good for a while. Then the oily residue makes it back in. Not overfilled with oil, and no apparent smoke coming out.Airfilter not over oiled...started all of a sudden😮😮😮, Thank you, Tudor
Tudor...This is a great question and issue that many XR650R and other 4-stroke owners might have...I'd like to ask a favor: Could you please copy and paste your question at this same video on the motorcycle channel? You'll find the video at: ua-cam.com/video/dir_izkbOJI/v-deo.html. I am excited to share my reply and details! We're growing the motorcycle channel (youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel), and there are already many XR650R-related exchanges...Thanks!
Thanks!...I'm planning this kind of tech for the new companion channel: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Your subscription and participation would be valued there. Join us!
Glad the video is helpful. I opened a motorcycle-only channel at youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Videos like this one, devoted to motorcycle tech for enduro, dual-sport and ADV bikes can be found there. Join us!
You're very welcome...Come join us at youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel for more videos like this. The channel is devoted to motorcycle how-to and riding. My XR650R is a regular there!
My mirrors came from Baja Designs, a quality setup. However, you've likely discovered that Baja Designs no longer offers dual-sport motorcycle conversion products. (They also did great stator rewinds. Wish I had gotten mine done.) So, my suggestion would be one of the major parts retailers: Revzilla, Chaparral, Rocky Mountain and others. See if Acerbis has any offerings, they have quality products. Come join us at the motorcycle channel: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Let us know what kind of mirrors you find! There is a lot of XR650R content at the motorcycle channel now.
Ah Fernley! Used to roll through there, Wadsworth really, from time to time on the way out to Gerlach. For about 25 years or so A big bunch of friends of mine mostly from NorCal would ride out Jack Ass Rd. past the dry lake, Winnemucca Dry Lake IIRC, out past the Rez. Im sure you been out that way! Pretty good riding out that way!
Ravioli and steak dinners at Bruno's, fuel for active enduro riders!...I'm planning to film High Rock Canyon and the Black Rock in late spring. Will be uploading travel videos to the new motorcycle channel at youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Join us at the new channel!
@@RoadReadywithMosesLudel Had more than one good meal at Bruno's for sure. He WAS quite the character. Been to the frog pond? That area south of there has some amazing washes/wild horse single track. Ever been to the school bus???
Yes, the school bus. Also Granite Peak and the Basque oven. The region is full of interesting sights and routes...Fly Canyon on the High Rock Canyon road is a piece of history. Many wild horses in the region. We have them near Fernley, too, at the Virginia Range as well. I grew up with immediate access to the Pine Nut Range. Western Nevada has lots of riding to offer.
Alot of folks think Nevada is flat desert. Far from it! Lots of high passes and Pinion Pines. Way more water than anyone would think. Used to race a class 10 car and had races in Yerington, Fernley, Lovelock and Fallon. That was back in the 90's!
Actually the Fernley Area (95A and nearby), though I do ride Highway 50E, 50W and 50A. Dayton is a stop when heading for Eldorado Canyon and Sunrise Pass. I have more local footage at the new motorcycle-only channel: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. Planning a busy filming season in 2024 after the thaw, covering NW Nevada. Join us at the motorcycle channel!
Hello i have a problem with my XR. She is leaking out of the crankcase breather when i do longer wheelies. When i just ride her without wheelies nothing is leaking. Oil level is correct. Do you have any idea? Is the xr not meant for longer wheelies?
Just went into this topic at the motorcycle channel. You can find that lengthy exchange at youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel. (You'll find this video and Comments there.) You'll also find that exchange in my "Q&A" video (Episode 3) on this topic...Join us, I'd be glad to continue with any questions you have after watching the "Tech and Travel Q&A" on oil going out the breather. I'll mention here that the transmission and engine crankcase use the same oil. The crankcase section for the crankshaft and lower end of the engine is a chamber separated by a one-way reed valve between the crankcase and the transmission gearset...Thanks!
You asked about a decompression camshaft...For my XR650R top engine build, I added a HotCams Stage 1 camshaft (mild grind) that eliminates the factory auto-decompressor mechanism. The handlebar compression release lever is used during kick starting. With the ignition switched off (Baja Designs dual sport conversion kit), I carefully bring the piston to TDC on the compression stroke then push the kickstart lever lightly to bring the piston just past TDC. Ignition turned ON, compression release level off, I kick through firmly. Tuned right, the engine starts on the first or second kick without kickback. This is a traditional starting method for high compression thumpers that I first used with my 1969 BSA 441 Victor Special single.
Yah bro u changed ur decompression cam & u installed HOT CAMS its detailed in ur video itz hard to find parts in our country (SL) wht did u do to ur decompression cam
The original camshaft with auto-decompressor went to a friend who has built/restored an XR650R. He had a similar problem to yours: no parts available. I was able to help him out. My choice to use the HotCams Stage 1 camshaft is "permanent". I am very pleased with using the manual compression release to carefully bring the piston just past TDC on its compression stroke before kicking through. Without kickback, the engine will start with one to two kicks. I plan to do a video on that starting procedure at the motorcycle channel: youtube.com/@motorcycletechandtravel.com. Join us there!
