Here is another way the 2-stroke and 4-stroke differ, at least with Motocross bikes: When people with some free enterprise in their hands created the 2-stroke engine for Motocross bikes, say starting in the early 60's I believe, the cost of a dirt bike went down, (and I bought 3 of them as a kid making $1.00/hr at my Dad's store at the age of 10-16, in 1974-1980). But when a dictatorship like the EPA forces the 4-stroke engine on the MX industry, the price almost triples again, (the first time is a similar story of intervention of free enterprise.), and not many people are affording them anymore. The bike I bought for $800.00 as a kid, can not be afforded as a kid today at 10 grand.
There is another difference between the 4-stroke and the 2-stroke for MX, and it is the same difference between communism and liberty.

The 4 stroke always made more sense to me… the 2 stroke has always been more a mystery. I’ve done some rebuilding and porting on 2s, but damn whoever came up with that idea is pretty clever imo. The 4 stroke is very straightforward technical engineering and the 2 is extremely clever outside the box engineering.

My 2 stroke yamaha never failed to amaze me, i was thinking i was changing engine oil but later i found that was gearbox and wet clutch. Lol
To see the correct level of this oil, you need to start the engine 10 or 15 sec. Whaaat?!
Indeed, i dont know if two 2T engines are simple or complex but they are genius.
I mean simpler cause less parts, but complex how the way they work.

No 4 stroke will ever run like the 250 Quad Racers or the 500 Quadzillias of the late 80s and Early 90s And the KX and YZ 125 and 250 dirt bikes
They were built to hammer down and grip and rip hill climbs and blast down railroad tracks like bullets!
Now get one lowered and extend the axles and you got a flying flat tracker that you better hang on to cause it's riding a rocket on wheels on a circle dirt track.
Some of the most fun and greatest times I've ever had in life.
Never has there been a 4 stroke that can compete with a 2 stroke unless the 2 stroke rider is scared to twist that throttle and fouls the plug!
Theory may seem to favor the 4 stroke but reality on the track is proof the 2 stroke will bust that ass!
ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT! .FACTS!

Now check into how a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke works, unlike these 2 strokes that work on the principle he explains here that's how common dirt bike, chainsaw and weed wacker engine's operate the crankcase of a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engine is the same as a 4 stroke engine wherein it has a normal bottom end that has the engine's oil supply in it like a car engine, complete with a dipstick, instead of having the air/fuel mixture passing through it with the downward motion of the piston pressurizing the crankcase to force that air/fuel mixture into the cylinder and the upwards motion of the piston creating vacuum that draws the air/fuel mixture into the crankcase, and it's why they MUST have a blower on them (notice I didn't say supercharger, I'll get to that in a moment).
The way they work is when the piston is near the bottom of it's power stroke from the combustion process the cylinders exhaust valve's open letting all the pressurized exhaust gases blow out, then at the very bottom of the stroke the piston uncovers an intake window on each side of the cylinder, that parts the same as the 2 stroke engine's he shows here, they have those intake windows instead of intake valve's, the windows are the end of the intake tract that begins at the blower, with those windows and the exhaust valve's both being open that allows the pressurized intake charge to push the residual exhaust gases in the cylinder out past the exhaust valve's, that's how the cylinder gets scavenged and the intake charge is introduced into the cylinder, then just as the piston moves up and covers those windows the exhaust valve's close at the same time (approximately) resulting in a fresh intake charge in the cylinder that's then compressed during the compression stroke.
This is why the engine isn't actually supercharged despite people mistakingley believing they are because it has a blower on it, without an exhaust valve that's closed and an intake valve that's open with the blower pumping a compressed charge into it until an intake valve closes it's not truly supercharged, it all works out as though a normally aspirated engine would.
They might have a moment where the exhaust valve's are closed and the intake windows in the bottom of the cylinder are still exposed that leads to maybe a pound or two of charge being trapped inside the cylinder at the right RPM's but I'm not sure on that one, I do however know that they really aren't considered to be supercharged engine's because of their operating principle.
Long before I learned how they worked I spent literally thousands of hours operating one in the Army as the driver of a weapons system that was built on an M113 armored chassis, they're powered by a V6 Detroit Diesel 2 stroke, I always used to joke around and say that they didn't really need a throttle pedal but instead could have just had a toggle switch that had "idle" and "run" positions because you either had one idling or the pedal stomped all the way to the floor in order to get one to do anything, not long after I got out of the Army I was talking to an old timer truck driver that drove back in the day when some trucks used those engine's, he said the joke back then was if you were going to drive a truck powered by a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel the way to get one to really run was to slam the door on your hand when you were getting in the truck.
They didn't produce nearly as much power per cubic inch as a modern 4 stroke supercharged/turbocharged diesel engine does but they'd last a long time in between rebuilds which is why trucking companies liked them, they were also common for energy sources in places like steel mills since they'd last so long, places like that actually had them set up in ways where through turning a set of valve's to route the oil through a different set of filters they could have an oil and filter change performed on them without them being shut down, they're also made in both left and right hand rotation with the fronts and backs of the blocks being made in such a way that they could be bolted together, two V6's could be bolted together to make a V12, they didn't make the best truck engine's but where they really shined was their industrial applications like in a steel mill where they had to reliably run 365 days a year 24/7.

This is by far not only the best comparison video between 2 and 4-stroke engines, it is the best YVPS explanation! I learned something about the exhaust "resonance". Great work on the video and fantastic results. Thanks!

It felt like they had half the acceleration of a YPVS . Pretty amazing what difference it made. Never really knew how it worked, just assumed it created more pressure somehow. Wasn't that far off.

After watching this video, I now understand a two stroke engine so much better than I ever did before. This would be a great video for an auto technician instructor to show his students on the first day of engines class. I think it would jump start their understanding of how an engine works.

By far the clearest explanation I’ve seen on the difference between two-stroke and four-stroke engines! If you do plan to make more future videos on two-stroke I’d also love to see obscure two-stroke designs such as diesel and marine applications, forced induction, and the inclusion of sleeve and rotary valves instead of reed valves like in Rolls-Royce Crecy and an experimental Ferrari F1 engine from the 90’s. VisioRacer did a great job introducing me to this, and I want to learn more.

As a loving Trabant 601 owner, this is one of my favorite videos you've made! It's also fascinating to see how it's engine compares! It uses rotary valves instead of reed valves, three piston rings instead of two, and produces more torque than horsepower. Also due to the rotary valves, rebuilds are not cheaper than a 4-stroke per se, because the valves slide directly on the aluminum crankcase there's pretty much nothing to reuse, you rebuild it by replacing the entire engine minus the engine accessories which are fully serviceable. In case anyone's curious how long a 2-stroke car engine lasts, it's best measured in decades, not distance :)
