  • Thanks for watching! This is another segment of my watch cabinet build. I'm hoping to have a few more in depth videos soon enough.

    Really nice to see a focused video on simple shellac application. I use shellac the same way on smaller projects and teal oil plus wax on larger ones. If you continue French polishing you can reduce the dilution but need a tiny bit of lubricant like baby oil (different names in different countries) to stop it sticking or gumming. Great to see how you apply yours and look forward to the build video. Thanks for posting.

    Really nice work! I really love using a Shellac finish. What you showed in this video is similar to a "French Polish" technique. I made an Acoustic guitar many years ago and used French Polish. I applied around 20 separate coats of Shellac that way. It's an amazing finish and my guitar still looks the same as the day I finished it! 👍👍

      Nice! Ya the French Polish is another animal all together! I hope to try it one day.

      Doesn't the second coat dissolve the first? After you finished with the Shellac did you use some type of wax?

    • @sapelesteve
      @sapelesteve 2 роки тому

      @@gsilcoful No it doesn't. The layers build on one another. Do a search on YT for "French Polishing" and you can see the process in detail. I don't recall if I put any wax on afterwards.

    I used to use Shellac but switched to lacquer. Recently I was remind why as I pre-treated some African Mahogany for a bookcase project because I knew it would be in the shop for months...it "dried" in minutes. When I finally got to sanding it TWO MONTHS later, it was STILL not fully cured and clogging my sandpaper even though the pieces were sticked the entire time. I only used it as a "pre-treatment" before lacquer.

      Very interesting. I like lacquer out of a can for a quick finish if the project calls for it. I haven’t done lacquer with HVLP yet except for the General Finishes water lacquer. Always something new to learn!

    Very nice. Do you prefer the shellac to the walnut oil I have seen you use?

    Lots of good tips. I too mostly use the blue towel application method, but might give the old t-shirt process a go. Id probably give that can of Zinzer an easy stir rather than a shake, lots settles on the bottom. Thanks, good tips.

      Good call Mark. Later in the video you can see how much settles. Stirring a full can is a good idea.

    I thought you were supposed to use dewaxed shellac? The can you have from the box store has wax in it and it’s said it can mess with other topcoats. Maybe not?

    Very good presentation. Do you prefer walnut oil or shellac for walnut projects?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому

      Thanks Bill. I hope back and forth. For small projects I prefer the walnut oil but don’t like it for the inside parts because it can leave a lingering smell. The shellac is somewhat odor-inert in that regard.

    Awesome video. Just what I was looking for. Quick question: is this your final finish stage? Or do you do more coats after assembling the piece?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  Рік тому +1

      Generally that’s it for the inside. I may do a few touch ups here and there as needed. The outside will get more coats than the inside did though. At least 3 usually.

    I’m ashamed to say that after 15 years of building stuff I have never tried shellac. I know people who use it love it. I learned a lot about it in this video. I guess I’m gonna go buy some shellac. LOL. Thanks. Great video as always.

      Thanks Andrew! It’s pretty useful. I forgot to mention that it’s great because it can go over most finishes and most finishes and can go on it. So it can be a great bridge between stains and things like that.

    The problem with prefinishing your projects is that some of the finishes will have a negative effect upon the glue up stages even when they are totally dry!. I do see why you'd want to prefinish but honestly I think I'd rather wait until the end process do the glue up then apply the finishes.
    As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому

      Thanks Simon! Ya these things can happen. One thing I forgot to mention is projects that require stain. I did a record cabinet last year out of cherry but it had a darker mahogany stain. I definitely needed to pre finish that before glue-up because applying the Rubio Monocoat afterwards would’ve been a big pain. Take care Simon!
