    This kind of deep dive - with really specific information to each step, without being pedantic - is what I needed in my woodworking life. Having an experienced person show and talk in a flow-of-thought kind of way is invaluable. Especially when you're discussing what you're looking out for, or if you hit a snag and need to change up your approach. Much appreciated man. I love your normal videos, but it would be amazing if each of your projects were covered in both formats. Keep it up!

    Love this, John~! Just speaking for myself, I would be interested in content regarding all aspects of your process. I really like your methodical approach and I find that it helps me think outside of the box a bit more. Thanks much~!

    Keep these kinds of videos coming! It’s great watching you build but the deep dive, detailed explanation of the why and how is the stuff I crave. I’m new to my woodworking journey and these are the kind of videos I’m seeking.

    Thanks for the breaking down video, it is the first I have seen on this. Explanations really helped.

    2:13 that's rift sawn (transitioning to flat sawn), not quarter. The board underneath it on the log would have been quarter sawn.
    It's still quite nice though.

      Good point, you’re right. I’ll admit from time to time I use the two terms interchangeably. 🙃

    John this is one of those projects that I will be watching 👀 very closely as like many other blokes I'm a bit of a watch guy and I'm alway's looking for new or better ways to store them. Will you be using a self winder mechanism or something else 🤔. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

      Thanks Simon! No plans for any mechanisms, just simple storage for this one.

    Thanks for sharing! How long do you like to wait between purchasing lumber and making your first cut?

    • @parillaworks

      It really depends on my schedule to be honest. In this case it was a week or so. If I had to budget time for the wood to rest, it would be AFTER resawing.

    I am particularly interested in the half mortise lock. More specifically can it be cut with a band saw. If not, i am still interested in the mortise locks specifics. Including layout.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t think a bandsaw could be used. I’ll be using a router for the bulk material removal and a chisel to clean everything up.

    Great video! Noticed you don't use your fence when re sawing is there a benefit to not using it when re sawing? I have had mixed results using and not using the fence but am new to re sawing lumber.

      Thanks Benjamin! I’ve never gotten it dialed in properly and don’t trust it not to drift and ruin my workpiece. So I just free hand it and that usually works well enough.

    Very interesting video, enjoyed seeing the process. It would be good to see you resawing the piece of walnut that you are discarding due to the defect. This would give others a better idea of what is happening inside this piece of wood and why it is a good idea to discard it. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your project.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому +1

      I wasn’t able to get footage or a photo of that piece but I will say that the defect didn’t go too far into the board. I probably would’ve been ok using it but still glad I opted not to.

    Great video John. Always good to see basic processes as SOMEONE ELSE does them...always something to learn from others. AND, we have the same bandsaw...that's exciting...lol. And I liked God's comment there at the end, it was like, "I'm the Lord your God, and I approve this message." Love that you left that in.

    I usually joint the large side of the board as well and then use the fence of the bandsaw. Do you feel you loose less material with your method or its a matter of preference?

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому +1

      These boards seemed relatively flat so I didn’t feel the need to rake that step. But often times I will joint the face like you mentioned. Especially if resawing on the table saw.

    Nice video, is there a reason you don't use the fence on your bandsaw when resawing?

      I just don’t have it set up properly and don’t trust it not to drift a lot. Mostly laziness 😂

    I will be looking forward to these videos to help guide me. I'm a artist and I have lots of painting supplies but also resin, gunpla, sewing, and markers galore, but my issue is find good storage options that fit my crafting area. So I've decided to make my own but don't know where and how to start(I have access to tools I would need from a family member and a rough draft of what I need for storage with measurements). I'm ready to learn while I look for and buy supplies to start my project.

    Very excited about getting in your head and learning how you think through all this stuff. Projects far less intricate than yours require so many decisions to be made. Mad respect for what you do. I do enjoy watching a project been built but I prefer learning why are you make the decisions you do. Every decision is critical in its own way. I look forward to more of these types of videos. Thank you.

    This is great stuff John! I love this approach in your video. You are very talented, and it’s great to see the steps you take at the beginning of the project. I have resawn walnut and had cupping problems. Now I understand why!! I thought it was something I was doing. Really looking forward to the rest of this series. Thank you very much.

      Thanks a lot Sandy! A resawn board bowing/cupping like that is one of my least favorite things! I’ll do my best to get as many topics covered as I can!

    Love your videos and excited for these deep dives! One question I had was why you don't use the fence when resawing? It looks like it would hold it straighter than free handing.

    • @parillaworks
      @parillaworks  2 роки тому +1

      I appreciate it! I’ve never taken the time to get my fence dialed in properly. Free handing works well enough for this type of sawing. If I ever need thinner veneers, I’ll definitely get the fence dialed in.

      Good questions! I have the case pieces stickered on the bench and will mill them up in a few days. That’s more due to my schedule than anything. I’m usually comfortable waiting a day or so.
