      Amen! Today is sun orbit 71 for me! One of my earliest recollections was listening to this 45 RPM record my older brother had . . . along with Palisades Park, Cathy's Clown and the likes. And then came the Beatles . . . I've never been the same ever since.

    • @Borovskij
      @Borovskij 2 роки тому +7

      Well, back then you had an obligation to somewhat actually be able to do, what you do..
      Nowadays if you look pretty and have a catchy hook, well get you a song writer, a DJ or a band, autotune and flood every channel, until you make it

    • @NotGoingToReadYourReply
      @NotGoingToReadYourReply 2 роки тому +8

      @@Borovskij This cracks me up because you really have to know next to nothing about music history for this to make sense to you. People made this exact same criticism decades ago about this music when it was new, they're doing it now for the current pop music, and they'll keep doing it decades in the future when new trends replace the current ones. The older generation has been whining about young people having different interests has been a constant for as long as we have recorded history. The goddamn Ancient Romans were all "kids these days..." I'm sorry but if you think there was a point in time where the music industry wasn't about making money then I really don't know what to tell you.

    • @Borovskij
      @Borovskij 2 роки тому +5

      @@NotGoingToReadYourReply oh no, I realize that an industry is made to make money, hence the name; obviously the Great composers of history, as they have been coined, were also pressured to produce for monetary reasons. But my point is, there are further between musicians having musical talent as well, instead of purely scenic talent
      Even "great" musicians of the '70s, '80s and '90s etc, have hired people to write songs for them, but just remixing a song in a new BPM and getting autotune to get you out of singing out of key was more rarely seen

    Ahh the 60s. When I heard the song, I closed my eyes and thought back in time. I wasn't lucky enough to spend my youth in this decade, let alone experience anything of it (born 99), but I imagine it to be just like in the movies. Of course it's only the films from which I get my idea. But what would I give to just spend one day and one evening in this era. Everything seemed so simple and straightforward back then. I would be in college with my friends, help out in my uncle's workshop in the afternoon and in the evening drive my Ford Mustang to the annual barn festival and drink the best beer there with my mates and just dance until the morning to this song and others .

      I remember the sound explosion this record created in 1960! Cultural breakthrough because it permitted young white teenage girls to experience a young black male singer as wholesome talent! "White" radio stations did not hesitate to play his music because it was energetic but not sexually threatening.
      Remrmyber, his sound explosion happened BEFORE 1964. His sweet youth, sunny smile, well pressed suit and loving emphasis on "his little sis" communicated pure joyful enthusiasm to a tsunami of young baby boomers looking for happy music of this own.
      No, nothing comes close to the social impact of Chubby Checker. Neither the wildly sexually ambiguous Little Richard nor the record selling genius of Jewish Indian Elvis Presley was received with such an explosion of pure enthusiasm like Chubby.
      No one wanted to ban him or burn his records. You had to have been there at that time to have understood.
      Only the dignified Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole were the famous men of color accepted on t.v. and "white" radio - but they were always sedate and smooth - not energetically dancing.
      Chubby Checker was a history changing artist.
