You're welcome Paul, but do have a look at my other tutorials of QGIS. Caris is great if you just want to look at some lidar, and the way it renders is beautful. It's actually quite hard to recreate. But, QGIS is infinitely expandable. I can layer over aerial photography, add markers, draw lines, layer over old OS maps etc... which Caris won't let you do. Just thought I should mention that 🙂
@@unearthers Thanks for replying! I've used QGIS a bit in the past, plus other GIS products. What I liked about Caris is that you can change the lighting and easily look at it from different angles. There was a tunnel dug around the 1860's in our area in order to bring a flume in to wash down the hillside on the opposite side of the mountain, so I wanted to see if LIDAR could find it. They never finished the tunnel because the civil war broke out, but it's interesting history.
Thanks very much for your kind feedback. I'm hoping to do more. What I'd love to do is find some free software where we can layer over data and create POIs
@@unearthers Do you know of a Mac equivalent to Easy View? When I went to download it I realised it's 100% Windows-based. I've tried searching online but as I'm not really sure what I'm looking for (ie a generic term for that kind of software) I'm not having much luck. Any guidance you can offer would be much appreciated👍
Great video guys - alas, I'm Mac based here, so doesn't look like I can get CARIS working. I know you said QGIS is a steep learning curve - but, other than that, will it likely work for me in a similar way? Many thanks, Bobby 🌺
Very nice! I use OASIS Montaj that I have from work - it's expensive and clearly not avaialble to most people. I did try QGIS but found it cumbersome and difficult to set the DTM view straight out of the box. I store all my finds info in an Excel spreadsheet that I can update and instantly import into an OASIS database and then map the positions. Is that possible in CARIS?
It's tricky isn't it. QGIS can work, but it's such a steep learning curve. I believe CARIS is just for interpretation/viewing. I hadn't explored any possibility of the above. I did look at the idea of layering over a tithe map for example, but couldn't find a way to do so. That is a limitation of it. It's a viewer only.
@Unearthers looks like the freebie viewer is for looking at grids etc. but not databases. I'm sure the metal detecting community would like to have an easy to use GIS targeted to their needs - import DTMs, maps and finds. I can do all that in OASIS but wouldn't be doing it if I didn't have access to a work license!
@@stefkuna I agree. I use Global Mapper commercially and a set of the features there would do well. Even if it was a low pay solution , say £39, I think people would Invest.
Hi Darren, originally yes, not too far away. If you're checking out the tutorials, head on over to the playlist and pick up qgis. A bigger learning curve but infinitely better
Hi Jim, I'm determined to help people who aren't so comfortable with using new software. I'll have some new videos soon, including other options which I hope I can explain and make as easy as possible 🙂
Are there other sites for downloading files outside the United Kingdom, i.e. the rest of the world, and I will not be able to download them? Thank you for your understanding
Yes there are, but some areas are limited. Take a look at my latest video uploaded today. There's a link in the description with worldwide places to obtain data
Scotland do their own thing with Lidar. Not everywhere is covered, but have a Google for Scotland lidar. Also I'd recommend checking out my QGIS video which will give you a better base to work from
So, all of my data is published by the UK government. I know in other areas of Europe, various countries do something similar, but you'd have to do some research.
Phase 1-4 covers quite an area for Scotland does it not? What NLS use here, the dataset is publicly available. maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=6.9056599060986255&lat=57.43373&lon=-2.88329&layers=1&right=LIDAR_DTM_1m
Anthony, if side by side exists in your area, then a form of these maps do too. On the side by side, it should tell you the source map. Match it to the environment agency offering. It may not be the 1m map like I use, but some have 50cm,.25cm maps or more likely 2m maps
Not with Cari's Mike, it literally is a view only, but take a look at my other lidar videos and getting started with QGIS where I've helped simplify things for metal detectorists
i'll give it a go here in the US and let you know how it goes... thanks a bunch for this info
Did you ever figure out how to find LIDAR maps in the US? Im in Alabama
This seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks so much!

Can I ask where you found the video? It's just had a few views today 🙂
Very good and well presented - thank you very much! Hope all well, All the Best, Alexander
Thanks so much. I've got some new videos coming soon around Lidar to help detectorists get even more out of it :-)
Really informative video. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks Daniel
Great tutorial - thank you!
Thanks. Give the QGIS tutorials a go though. A bigger learning curve but much more useful long term 🙂

@@unearthers Much appreciated - I'm on it right now
Not used liar yet. Thanks for the inspiration. Will check it out.
You're very welcome.
Qgis is King!!!
I could blow your minds with Qgis!!!
Nobody is saying that QGIS isn't great, it is. The issue for the majority of detectorists is the incredibly steep learning curve.

It's coming soon! www.cadden.fr/en/a-map-of-france-in-lidar-soon-accessible-to-all/

Is there a way to do that sort of thing but for Europe's territory ? Especially Italy 'cause i live there...

Is it possible to obtain lidar information in all countries?
Not all, but lots. It's the resolution that will vary more than anything
thank you
Still not availible in scotland apart from windmill sites 😭
