I never wore PFD underway on my bay boat and to make it worse, years ago I fished lake waters in freezing temps. Never connected the kill switch lanyard. Until I saw a video several years ago with 2 wildlife officers that were ejected from their boat. They were going approx. 35 mph and by the time they realized what happened, both were in the water. One was wearing the inflatable vest, other wearing inflatable belt. They hit the water so violently the one with the inflatable belt had belt ripped off his body. The other one saw his buddy in trouble, went to him and helped him to shore. The driver way wearing kill lanyard to kill the engine. After the boat was pulled from the water, they found a small log with deep cuts which matched the prop. Both of them stated they never saw the log floating right below the surface. I started wearing inflatable vest and lanyard every time the boat is underway. I also wear the vest when I am fishing alone unless I am inshore fishing in skinny water. I live on NC coast, they passed a law a few years ago that all recreational boats under a specific length (I think 26') must wear kill lanyard when boat is on plane.

Alfred, you provided great coverage last week on that accident. It was very upsetting to see that boats damage but after hearing about the death, I was sick to my stomach. I always wondered, why do these boats need to travel at such a high rate of speed? Back in the 80’s a friend of mine was killed under the George Washington bridge when he struck a large piling at a very high rate of speed. The piling punctured through the hill and killed him instantly. Ever since then (I was a kid at the time) I drove like an old man. It doesn’t pay to take any chances. May the guy from Miami Rest In Peace and May his family be able to to get along without him. ❤

News got through to us in the UK, through boating forums. One person died and two others were hurt as the result of a boating accident on Tuesday 26th in the afternoon near Black Point Marina, authorities said.
Air and boat rescue crews were called around 2:45 p.m. to the area after receiving reports of a boating incident, Miami Dade Fire Rescue said.
According to Florida Fish and Wildlife, a 39' Contender was traveling at a high rate of speed in Biscayne Bay when the boat's operator lost control, ejecting the three people on board.

Hey alfred been following before the varado video, I am 62 YR old been fishing all my life Many times offshore. This happened on the West Coast of Florida. 4 professional football players went fishing in FEB 2009 they fished a wreck about 70 miles off shore and lost a anchor the following week they went back and got Stuck again Not willing to lose the anchor they tied it to one side of the boat the wrong way and gave full throttle. The boat rolled over and threw them out. One guy had put on a thin layer jumpsuit Because he got cold on the way out the rest of them were in T shirts and shorts the boat stayed anchort upside down they got on top of the hull. They had not told anybody where they were going and they did not have a EPIRB They were out there for days. Unfortunately 3 had succumb to hypatermia. The guy that put the jumpsuit on had just enough of a barrier to keep warm. He watched his friends all die 1 at a time he told a chilling story of the whole event. MUST HAVES EPIRB VHF PFD And leave a float plan to tell somebody where you are going When I go off shore. I have these things and I always have a float plan If they had left one, they might have not died and got found sooner.

Engines going 'hard over' on a loss of electronics sounds like a severe malfunction that should never (by design) happen. Typically, powered components (of any type) are designed to fail in a 'fail-safe' mode of operation. My assumption here is that the 'electronics' that failed had something to do with a steering (i.e., autopilot) failure. Multiple outboard motors on transoms are arranged so that port and starboard mounted engines rotate in opposite directions to counteract unbalanced (left/right) thrust. This allows the boat to go "straight" with minimal action of the steering wheel. Maybe the issue was a loss of two engines that rotate in the same direction which could result in a sudden change of boat direction (especially at 80mph). An issue with that configuration would explain a 'hard over' on a combination engine failure plus and/or a steering failure. An extra 200 hp over rated is a lot of excess power and transom weight too - both which can affect steering and handling.

Alfred - The boat probably hit the sea bottom. The accident happened at low tide (2pm 9/26) and it appears the boat was west of Black Ledge shoal where the water was probably average 3 feet deep and there is a small unmarked shoal the size of a tennis court there (you can see it on the chart) that is treacherous. I have seen a boat that hit it at normal speed and ended up grounded, but hitting it at high speed could result in the sad situation that happened. Leaving Black Point channel to the North, for deep water you must keep Black Ledge to your west and Featherbed Banks to your east. Can be tricky for boaters unfamiliar with the area. On the other hand, heading SSE out of Black Point channel there are miles of deep water. To visualize better check a marine chart and it becomes very clear. Captain Tom

Those of you who live in communities where law enforcement is valued, count your blessings. Things have gotten so bad here in Seattle. It's not safe anymore. They even recently closed one of our major boat ramps as it had become a hotbed of drug dealing, yet the City Council does nothing. The law abiding boaters are overruled by the criminals. It is our new normal.
Blessings to you Alfred, to all the first responders, and to the family of the victims of this accident. 😢

The call came from a third party, probably the witness. Initially, it was a boat accident with two people in the water. Then they updated it that they were looking for a third victim. The next update was that the third victim was pulled from the water, and they were performing CPR. Someone in that boat stayed on the line with 9-1-1 the whole time giving precise coordinates that expedited the rescue operation. That was the boat that Capt. Lance was referring to. Those people on that boat are true heroes and probably saved two lives. Such a tragic event.

Alfred I also have been ejected from a boat, it was not fun. As a counter point i was not wearing a PFC and that in this situation saved my life. It was a bimini start at a fishing tournament, the boat I was on was fast! It was still dark out at the launch, we were hit on the side by another boat. That said, I found myself underwater with 100s of flats boat flying over me!!!! I swam down as deep as I could to avoid being hit.. Held my breath as long as I could as boats zoooooomed over me! That said, I agree, we MUST wear our lanyards and PFC. FYI that fishing tournament that will go un mentioned, no longer does bimini starts and REQUIRES PFC while the boat is moving. If you are caught without it while moving, you will be disqualified. Such a sad story yall!!!!

you are absolutely correct about the lanyard and PFD - they are a must - I have nut run a boat without the lanyard since 88 - from what I have heard about the accident and your accident I do not want hydraulic steering on any boat - I was not aware of the turning of the motors on loss of electrical power - I had an English Whaler 17 with a 115up on it - Aquasport barrowed it to make a commercial before it was delivered to me - they clocked it with radar doing 52MPH on the last run, every run thy did was faster - first day I put it in the water my partner on both the boat and business did a hard max left turn at full speed - if my leg did not get hook under the rear bench seat I was sitting on I would have been thrown at least 20 feet out of the boat - it rolled enough to splash water in the boat - the only other time that boat had water in it was when he tried to jump a huge, at least 5ft wake at almost full power and buried the bow - I went thru Haulover over 30 times when it was bad and never got a drop in it - yes, he was crazy - he drove his car the same way -

Hydraulic steering wasn't the problem. People have been using hydraulic steering for years. The problem is more likely to do with the fact the new boats are all electronic over hydro steering instead of last gen's motors that were cable over hydro steering.

In gear-lanyard and PFD on. Chit can happen at the dock let alone anywhere else.
Friends new bass boat was cleared after the breakin hours. Entered a tournament the next day. Running 60+ to their honey hole the steering rod on the outboard snapped. Interior metal defect. The boat took a 90 degree(square)right turn. He had front and rear GoPros, tossed him and his bud immediately over the port gunnel so fast he still had his hands held like holding the wheel. He had on the lanyard and both had their PFDs on, unconscious but face up, outboard died so it didn't come around and chop them.
Wear your PFDs and lanyards-or stay home, already enough stupid people on the water.

Thanks Alfred for the udate. Your right, it is easy to speculate on the cause of any accident. Like you said, there were survivors, so there will be verifiable proof.
I really dont think any of the first responders get the respect they are due. They have a very hard job, at times. They have to deal with helping injured, and unfortunately fatalities, with all the blood and gore that the news can't show. I have had several friends as first responders, i have seen the first moments after an accident, it takes a special person to deal with that everyday. Combat veterans witness it as well. They all deserve a special place in you prayers.

Seems to me that is something that should be able to be prevented pretty easily. Somehow on power loss that the motors are locked into place or nearly locked into place and only allowed to turn gradually. With that type of safety feature built in, then that guy might still be alive. So what's the deal ?

A lot of those guys should be thanking us, the taxpayers, for providing them with a decent living....

Alfred you did a good job covering the boat accident. Professional and with compassion. It is sad what happen. Prayed for the occupants and family. However going way too fast. No need for that speed. AND repowered boat with too much power and out of spec. Thise are combinations that five the results that happen. Greatly reduced survivability of occupants. Sure Contender will get ahead of this to make aware of those facts to protect their name. Not boats fault.

Things are designed a certain way because the people that built an designed them did the testing and trials before they built em when people change things it doesn’t always turn out for the best .
