These look very nice.
I like that they also serve as a „hidden compartment“ so one could maybe store some spare money or something similar in them.
Great project and especially important for small-space and indoor cats. Cats just love to be able to climb!
+Steve Ramsey thanks for watching yeah you're right the cats are loving jumping up and down these wall shelves
love it - really wish you'd get back into making videos ;)
I don't think there'd ever be a danger of the cats pulling the shelves off the walls. I've done pull ups on floating shelves. They'll be fine
Thank you! I am looking to use vintage suitcases as my cat shelves and I think your technique will work perfectly!
Hi, I would really love to have these but I don't have a saw. Can you tell me the pieces, types and sizes I would need to have if I buy them pre-cut? You make it look so easy. : )
Love your floating shelves! My husband watched this (and your previous video) an hour ago and is out in the garage now, building some (as we speak). Brilliant!! Thanks a bunch!!!
+Cindy Chavez thats so awesome. Im glad my little video inspired him and helped. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Could you send him over to my house in SC!
You I going out here Mike that you I I IA
Saw
inlaying the carpet is a nice touch - good job man!
+Nick Ferry thanks nick
I've just discovered you Patrick through this and your other cat shelf video and I have to say I am thrilled to find someone with not only the ability to produce well edited videos that are not full of pointless banter and "umm"s and "errr"s, errors, sloppy workmanship and unsatisfying outcomes, of which there are so many out there, but someone whose videos are straight to the point, not needlessly over long and clear and easy to understand.
I am thoroughly impressed by your setup too and more than just a little bit jealous. I think your vacuum sanding box is inspired and I love the table and fence you have created
for your slide/drop saw, and your simple notched scrap timber "pushers" you use with your table saw are genuine thumb-savers. The one thing that I thought was truly brilliant though was unfortunately not a creation of yours (sorry!) but the "handle" pusher item you use to guide some of the timber through your table saw that goes straight over the blade. Its design is genius and had me wondering how it "attaches" to the timber - is it simply through your applied pressure, or is there suction at play? What is the item called and where do I obtain one?
Thank you again for finally giving me a source of frustration-free workshop videos, I truly appreciate it!
I'm so evil.....keep in mind I truly AM a cat lover. When you were saying make sure it's level I was thinking "but it would be so much more fun if it was slanted and slick".....sorry. At 1 time I had 30 indoor cats. People brought strays to me all the time. I finally was able to get the money together and get them fixed and find good homes for them.
That's nice , They look Heavy Duty & would bet you could have a few heavy cats out on the edge of them. Great build !!!
Great video...THANKS!!!!!
My daughter would love those. She's a cat lover!
Great video! It was very informative! I was wondering what specific tools you used to make these shelves (drill, nail gun, sander, stud finder, type of nails, type of screws, etc.)? Which tools would you recommend? Thank you for the videos!
Dude, you’re amazing! Got right to the pony and explained everything to a T. Thank you! Subscribed now!
Okay, this is freaking awesome! I love it and I'm sure my cats will too!
Nice video. Just wondering why they are called floating.
"Easy DIY" Uses 100 different tools...
Looks doable. I have a hefty boy (17 lbs) this ought to work well with
when i see DIY and see massive tools being used and i live in an apartment im like :((( dreams destroyed
Smoogle s. You can make this with hand tools.
I hope it holds my 7 kg 🐈, awesome video thanks
Thanks for the video. Time for a Bunnings trip
Can you make a longer video with the kitties on the boxes? Cute kitty.
I love this. Too bad I'm not really handy-inclined. Wish you were my cousin!
hey, Caroline, I Do put them on my Etsy store and ship them out to people, I don't have any in stock as of now but I can make some
if your interested let me know I can make you a set thanks for watching
I don't have any working hand held sanders...
I can do the shelves but I have no idea where to find floating cats
Nice shelves Patrick's! It looks like these will work for more than cats. Time for me to get busy and make some shelves.
Hi Patrick, havent heard anything from you about Ice. How is she doing?
+Bernhard Rindlisbacher (Bewoleks) hi Berny she is doing great , i been meaning to do a update video ill get a update out on tuesday so everyone can see her , i take her to the park almost everyday for a bit and she runs around peeing on every tree lol thanks so much for all the support
That was a lot to do just to make a simple shelf, but great job
I love the idea of the "arms" sticking out of the wall mount. I have been thinking through making cat shelves, but I have one really large maine coon (and another smaller one). So, normal cat shelves wouldn't work. I was worried about the extra weight ripping the shelf off the wall, but I didn't want to see all the ugly mounting brackets. This helped me tremendously and I thank you for posting it.
That's sweet, I don't have a cat. But, that would be cool for decorating.
+ITS A WOOD THING thanks Ronnie you can make these and not put the carpet and stack some trinkets and books ,anyway thanks for the support
Why would a floating cat need a shelf? Kidding. I like wall projects. Great job.
Great video and PERFECT kitty shelves! Thank you, Patrick :-)
thanks so much i'm glad u liked it
Yaaaaas! Aaaachew! Sorry I'm highly allergic to cats. Still awesome buddy!
+RetroWeld thanks Doug im sure dogs can climb them as well thanks for watching
Hi Patrick, love these shelves they seem so sturdy. I have 6 cats and this would be perfect for them. Do you happen to sell these? Thanks!
Thanks, I have a question. What is the distance between floating shelves that cats can jump?
hmm. good question. I think it depends on the cat. but most cases I would say 10- 16 inches.I have seen cats jump 6 plus feet up a fence. so most cats can jump any distance you hang them but I think its more for the look of the design of your wall than the distance a cat can jump. unless you have an older kitty than I would make them closer for easier climbing. I hope that helps . thanks so much for watching
Love it! You explained everything so someone with no skills can follow along, which is what I plan to do!
Awesome. Thank you
the best tutorial for floating shelves!!!! thank you

This is a great DIY video. My husband and I will be making some floating cat shelves thanks to your easy to follow instructions.
This is great.
At 0:59 you do a thing to your pilot holes, where you drill/rout the hole to be larger at the top. What is that, and what does it do?
🤷🏼♀️🥺I'm such a girl , those tools looked super intimidating. Do you sell these ?
hello Michelle thanks for watching I do sell these I dont have them on my website but feel free to email me patricksworkshop452@gmail.com i make them to order and size per customers request
Looks like the cat took to them really well. Good job Patrick.
+Steve Carmichael well that cat no like but the others do thanks for watching Steve
If your cat floats, why does it need a shelf?

+Kelly Brown thanks Kelly for watching
Nice! and you could use the same methods for almost every type of floating shelf.
food for thought! :-)
+Richard “BrainFizz” Morley hey Rich , yeah i figure all styles of floating shelves are very similar how they are made ,i guess putting your own twist to change up the norm is what makes them different thanks for watching
Patrick's Work Shop Out of interest, did you screw the shelves to the brackets underneath the carpet, they looked a pretty snug fit, so may not have. Love the inset carpet! How do the cats get on with it? Knowing what cats can be like, they're just as likely to watch you making them then never go anywhere near them! :-) Thats where dogs have the advantage! BTW how your dog getting on?
well you're right about the snug fit so no screws, her cats love the shelves check out my instagram page to see pictures of the cats on them , i do flooring for a living and insetting the carpet is the only way to go ,and Ice is doing great real great as i'm shooting a update vid tuesday as a matter of fact to show her to everyone , thanks for asking Rich and thanks for watching

"Easy"
Peasy
The glue bottle - does some brand of glue come in that bottle or is the bottle a separate item ?
the glue bottle is a glubot from fastcap.com it is a great bottle check it out and no it dont come with glue but it is well worth the few bucks thanks for watching
I've always loved the look of floating shelves. Great job!
+Charles Dearing thank you kind sir for watching
Cool project Patrick
+Mike Fulton thanks Mike
One thing that can be complicated is to do thinner shelves and solid at the same time. I did.for my cats and I used 1x2" inside (the support) and 1/4" MDF panel (outside). So my shelves are 2" thick. I dont see how to go thinner other than using steel....
Fantastic. Can't wait to make some for my fat cats! Thanks!
+Lori Schwartzkopf awesome Lori thanks so much for commenting and watching
Nice & sturdy....looks like the cat likes them too.
+Rag Tie thanks they are thank you for commenting and watching
Great project, great video...do you make house calls? Sill overwhelmed on the fact I have to disassemble my 1954 bench saw to get the blade to come up more than 3/8"!
thanks Mary Jane if you live in the LA area I do make commission pieces . what kind of saw do you have that the blade only raises 3/8 of an inch ? i like old vintage tools i would be interested in hearing more about your saw
oh, now it works here. Oh well. My reply is on the cat shelf video page.
