Looks like you figured it out in the video, but a you need a piece of scrap wood behind whatever it is you're drilling. wood fibers only go in one direction and having a force go against it will cause splintering. it's something taught in woodshop in some USA high schools.

Step drilling is your friend. Put a small hole in before a medium hole until your actual hole size.

Legit question: could I fill cracks and do the dowels, then put finish on the project.
Yes, you could definitely do that. One reason that people stain the individual pieces prior to assembly is that it is easier than trying to stain the finished inside corners/angles but it is not impossible to do after assembly.

There are a lot of key tails or bob tails cat in Japan from long time ago.
there are a lot of reason.
but i like the reason about NEKOMATA monster.
In samurai age,people believed when a cat with a long tail gets old, it becomes a monster called Nekomata.
so they were scared long tail cat.
and they didnt bred them.
they take care about short tails.

I'll build 2 type of it, one with the same size as you, and one more for the kitten it would be smaller, I will use 24cm wide pine wood planks for it. Great video! I love that you showed how to use the tools. But, your cat popping up through the hole at the end freaked my cat out. Maybe consider that your audience is cat owners and there may be cats watching?
