Dude... You're a genius. You just taught me at least 3 game changing techniques. Sanding dowels with a drill, using a speed square with a circular saw, and of course the method of making floating shelves without expensive hardware. Thank you! Awesome work!

Not only are you a great woodworker, but I believe you're even better at making UA-cam videos: To the point, super informative, and great camera work. Excellent work!
Completely agree! Mine didn’t turn out “perfect”, but that was more due to the lumber, definitely not due to the instructions! One thing that I would recommend is to do the process as the video shows: In the SAME order! I did the cuts as well as all of the drilling, countersink, safety pilot holes, etc. at one time as well as sanding the dowels. I did this because I knew that I was having back surgery in the next few days and I wanted everything to be ready to go when I felt like finally hanging the shelves... I had to go back and re-do a bunch of things due to this...(again- totally MY fault 100%). But the biggest pain was that I didn’t sand down the dowels enough...”lightly sanding” them was NOT what I considered lightly! Took way more sanding than I would have thought to get the actual shelves to easily slide on and off! So, if you decide not to do in order of the video/instructions...be forewarned!
You know what I like most in your videos ? It's the fact that you try not to use fancy expensive tools. You make it accessible to most. Congrats for that

I'd suggest wood gluing the dowels into the small piece against the wall, too. As a beginner, DIY'er I appreciate the video and look forward to more
Jessica MacMurtrie to hold the shelf in place once mounted. With woodworking, oftentimes you do a lot of construct/deconstruct before you have your final product. In this case, you want to have all holes drilled before you stain/varnish.
@@suzannereed6645 Right. Thanks! I get it now, he just didn't really talk about putting a screw in the dowel, then removing it when hanging it up, then replacing it after the shelf is up. And since this was my first woodworking project, I was confused at first, but it makes sense.
I am in the process of making these shelves and I'm AMAZED that I seem to actually be able to do this. I've never done woodworking before, but this video was awesome with step by step instructions. I'm also thrilled at the money I saved because buying floating shelves this size is so expensive! I can't wait to see my finished shelves! Thank you! :)
If you are wondering how much weight these shelves can hold, don't bother looking through the comments. Just went digging and there is literally over 200 comments asking about the weight and he never answered a single one of them.
Supporting lumber under with a scrap to prevent sagging while cutting is a great idea and oh I would have cut the lumber than try to drill dowel holes on both sides and end up not aligning them properly. Great job man
Thank you so much for sharing, straight to the point, no unnecessary extra talk, step by step instructions, you sir know how to make a great tutorial video.
Seriously you guys who don’t own tools, go buy a $10 hand saw and a $20 used drill. I own some really good tools but there are so many ways to build something. No one goes out and buys a woodshops worth of tools in one outing, you slowly build a collection over many years. The tools you buy for this project will come in handy in the future, plus you’ll get a better shelf and pride in your work
Harbor Freight has really great prices if you only need one or two of these tools. I bought an amazing 5” orbital sander for $26. Once you buy it, you can tackle so many projects. Same thing goes for their drills, bits, clamps, etc. You might spend $100-$150 on tools but then never need to purchase them again (or at least not for a long time).
Blows my mind people complaining about tools... in my household I grew up watching both my parents tackle everything they could by themselves and as soon as I moved out have a basic set of tools was on my list because you obviously will need them soon or later for your furniture. Seriously if you watch a DIY video and don't expect tools to be involved you better watch those craft ones for 10yo that put hot glue on everything. lol
"....No one goes out and buys a woodshops worth of tools in one outing....." My credit card statements every time I come back from Home Depot might make you think otherwise. lol
Mate, this is so brilliant! Even as a total DIY noob, I feel like I could successfully pull this off. I can't wait to move into my new place so I can try to install some of these myself and make it a thing to do together with my kids.
The tools required for this can be gotten for around as much as you’d pay for the shelves, Pre-made. BUT, you can use the tools for further projects :) Realistically all the tools you need is a drill and drill bits. You can hand sand it, and have it cut by the store, or spend $30 on a circular saw :) definitelyblook into a cheap drill and circular saw. You could prob find at a garage sale for cheap, too! Heck Facebook garage sale sites. They sell for next to nothing at garage sales and things bc people don’t typically go there for tools
Exactly what I was looking for! I work with a lot of live edge pieces and this technique will work perfect for me. Definitely liked the sanding dowel tip you used, very clever. Thanks for this video
OMFG - use the speed square as a guide... that just blew my mind! So simple and obvious yet this is the first time I've ever considered doing that. I now feel stupid for years of avoiding my circular saw due to my exceptional ability to not cut a straight line. I know it was just an off-hand thought for you, but thanks anyway you just changed my shop life.
I wasn't sure where you were going with it when you drilled the hole for the dowel the same depth as the dowel, until you ripped it down. Neat idea, and it seems like it works quite well!

Wife has been trying to find "doable" floating shelves and these were them. I ended up doing screws into all three dowels because i ended up with a small gap where I made the rip cuts. I'd suggest wood gluing the dowels into the small piece against the wall, too. As a beginner, DIY'er I appreciate the video and look forward to more
I don't understand why to put the screws in the dowels. Just to stain it? But then you take them out when you mount the shelf?
Jessica MacMurtrie to hold the shelf in place once mounted. With woodworking, oftentimes you do a lot of construct/deconstruct before you have your final product. In this case, you want to have all holes drilled before you stain/varnish.
@@suzannereed6645 Right. Thanks! I get it now, he just didn't really talk about putting a screw in the dowel, then removing it when hanging it up, then replacing it after the shelf is up. And since this was my first woodworking project, I was confused at first, but it makes sense.
Beware Iif you choose to glue...if the dowels don't align perfectly straight you will have a hell of a time getting the shelf back together.
Thanks for a great video!!! As a DIY'er with limited tools, I feel I can tackle this with no problem thanks to your instructions!
Thank you for this video. My kids and I used your tips and made shelves together on Mother’s Day. They came up looking great!
Just went digging and there is literally over 200 comments asking about the weight and he never answered a single one of them.
literally what i wanted to know! lol
It depends on the dowel thickness and Wood type. I'd guess this shelf could hold 50 or so lbs
Those are not for heavy loads for sure, only for decoration.
N I put my microwave oven on a floating shelve
The dowels are probably fine as long as the joints are nice and tight, so it probably would mostly rely on your screws.
These are beautiful. I love your simple approach without fancy hardware. Very nice.
Thanks Anna
The tools you buy for this project will come in handy in the future, plus you’ll get a better shelf and pride in your work
Some people should not own tools
You'll spend more on the tools than what the project's worth lol
Brilliant! So clear & concise. I wish more DIY videos were like yours.
simple, elegant, beautiful, adaptable and practical. Great job. You don't see too many videos with check marks in all those "boxes". Thank you.
Me before watching video: These are so simple and elegant. I can do this!
Me after watching video: Oh, you need tools nvm.
Lmaoo same 🙊
Same
Hahaha, yeah! Those are beautiful!
Hey,well tools are a great investment. If you have your own tools if something breaks all you need is the tools and internet.
The tools required for this can be gotten for around as much as you’d pay for the shelves, Pre-made. BUT, you can use the tools for further projects :)
Realistically all the tools you need is a drill and drill bits.
This was the exact video I was looking for and your step by step was incredible. Appreciate it man
Exactly what I was looking for! I work with a lot of live edge pieces and this technique will work perfect for me. Definitely liked the sanding dowel tip you used, very clever. Thanks for this video
A man with talents not only in his creations, but the video is put together so it is enjoyable to watch, thanks.
Glen, that’s brilliant mate.
Thanks Dave!

I just built and put these up, they're amazing. Thank you for t he upload! Going to tackle the floating entertainment console next!
Sweeeet
OMFG - use the speed square as a guide... that just blew my mind! So simple and obvious yet this is the first time I've ever considered doing that. I now feel stupid for years of avoiding my circular saw due to my exceptional ability to not cut a straight line. I know it was just an off-hand thought for you, but thanks anyway you just changed my shop life.
K A you are not alone. I had the same thought when I saw him do that!
MILLION DOLLAR IDEA! Seriously...Brilliant!
That was an amazing time to me as well
There is nothing exceptional about your ability to not cut a straight line!!
He can do what he wants jackass.
Perfect filming, editing, narrating and carpentry. Not a single boring moment.
I wasn't sure where you were going with it when you drilled the hole for the dowel the same depth as the dowel, until you ripped it down. Neat idea, and it seems like it works quite well!
Chris Albee - same! I was confused until the ripping step!
That's exactly what I was thinking too. Which is why drilling to full depth of the dowels threw me off lol
Nice work we can chat more and get to know each other we can also discuss other things. I'm Sandy. Write me joyfulluv81@gmail
Hope to hear from you soon
Hold up , I’m
About to teach my husband I won’t be needing his help anymore 😂
Good for you. Although I would teach him what you know so he can help.
You just be throwing that word "easy" around huh. The lies, the betrayal. I'm over here in tears. I really dont need shelves that bad. I have decided lol
Lol
Hahah I agree. I was like, this is not easy. 😂
Is not that bad lol
home depot give you two cuts for free...+$1.00 for each add. cut. way easier to have them cut it
it’s not that bad lmao
maybe for the below average person who doesn’t normally build things then it’s like.. well why’d you bother searching how to BUILD your own shelf? ya know
Love this method for building and attaching the shelf! It's super simple and accurate, and doesn't require expensive shop tools, but the results are perfect. Thanks for sharing your ideas and techniques.
I agree 100%
Looks easy enough. All I need is a table saw, a workshop, and patience.
Hahaha. 10 years later I'm working on this
I just use a cheap $30 jigsaw for cutting everything 🤦🏾♀️ it works tho!
These shelves are absolutely beautiful and your tutorial is SPOT ON! Thank you SO much for putting together such an informative, clean, useful video!
Love this! You answered each of my questions almost as I thought them. Thanks for the conditioner tip. So often diy staining looks awful but this looks good.
You sir are a gem!!! My sister has asked me to do some floating shelves for her and couldn't really figure out how to do it. Thank you for the amazing video! You have earned a subscriber for life!
This is awesome man. I'll definitely use this technique. Now I wanna make some floating shelves.
Thank you
Brb, gonna show this video to the home depot associate. Ty!
Thank you! This is fantastic. I can't wait to do this in my home office. Also, thank you for the excuse to buy more tools :)
Stumbled upon this. I have seen many videos of floating shelves but this one beats all of them. Simple no hardware and looks classy af … excellent job👌
Great vid dude in the middle of a finish basement job I have extra lumber. I’m gonna try this n surprise my client your good thanks
