Before & After China Cabinet Makeover

  • Yes! I painted a Mahogany china cabinet that was perfect and beautiful as it was!
    Oh the humanity 😱
    Ok, all sarcasm aside...this china cabinet was truly gorgeous in its original condition no doubt about it.
    **For links to the tools and supplies I use when painting gloss furniture, download The Glossy Furniture Guide for free!** glossyfurnitureguide.com/
    I found it on Facebook Marketplace for $100.
    The owner had stored it in their outdoor shed for the past many years. It was covered in mold and mildew, but other than that it was in great shape all things considered.
    It's sat neglected in my shop for the past year and a half because I've not had the time to mess with it.
    BUT when Maker's Challenge Central announced that the theme for season 5 of The Furniture Flip Challenge was "Make It Shine," I knew that now was the perfect time to blow the dust off this piece and well....make it shine.
    It took two and a half weeks for me to complete this beauty - though I don't know exactly how many hours I put in. I completed it just in the nick of time to enter it into the contest. At the time I'm posting this video, a winner hasn't been announced.
    But contest or not, I'm thrilled with the way this china cabinet turned out. It might be my favorite piece I've ever painted.
    I used Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant in the color G20010. (This color is really similar to Sherwin Williams Grandview and Benjamin Moore Lehigh Green).
    The gold leafed back adds a warm, subtle glow that enhances the beauty of the china without distracting.
    The new hardware is from Van Dykes Restorers www.vandykes.com/restorers-cl...
    THIS PIECE IS FOR SALE: It can be viewed and purchased here paintedbykaylapayne.myshopify...
    Links to the sander, spray gun and everything else I use can be found in The Glossy Furniture Guide!

    I've been in the automotive refinishing industry for over 15 years, I'm must say so do exceptional work. In the industry there are painter and refinishers. Anyone can be a painter but not everyone can be a refinisher. You take no short cuts in your prep work and your final product reflects it.

      May I suggest you trying the 3m accuspray gun for high solids applications, it lays down high solids like glass. Also spray polyester "sprayable bondo" which is very similar to FPE putty except you don't have to brush, so no brush marks to sand flat. Evercoat makes a very economical one called Slick Sand. But if you prefer something more premier Spies Hecker Raderal Spray Polyester 3508. Both these products could save you countless hours in prep without sacrificing quality.
      I also noticed you using the festool sander which is a fantastic DA sander. You may also want to check out Hutchins they make some of the best in the world.

    I was wondering if you tried Masking Liquid H2O on the windows instead of masking tape?

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  Рік тому +2

      I've not tried it, but it looks cool for some types of applications!
      In this instance, I would've had to very carefully paint it onto the glass with a tiny brush to get it into the teeny tight spaces of the fretwork. Taping was way faster in this case.
      I've also heard that you can just spray on the masking - even getting it on the wood - but I'm like....no way. NEVER.
      I go through such painstaking lengths to make sure my wood surfaces are clean and free of everything that there's no way i'd spray on masking liquid and risk that contamination or it interfering with adhesion of my primer and paint.
      Sorry for the long novel response! Great question by the way!

  • @susanc1179
    @susanc1179 Рік тому +2

    This is gorgeous. The gold leafing in the back is stunning. Is it necessary to sand down to bare wood for this particular paint type or is that an individual preference? I think your spray booth is ingenious! What kinds of polls were those? I’m on my way to buy some of this paint today. I’m so excited to try this!

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! It’s not necessary to take the wood all the way down to bare.

    It's a beautiful piece and your painting talents should take you into the automotive restoration biz!
    I would have hesitated to paint over that inlay, but seeing that the drawers are not dovetailed, I imagine that this is a lower end piece.
    Did you end up selling it and for what price? So glad that you like color! You must have a special niche in the industry because everyone else is using either cottage white or black!
    I've seen a pair of beautiful high end book cases painted in this color and I'll never forget them. They had doors on them with metal netting instead of glass making for a french country look. Did it ever occur to you to head in that direction with this piece?
    Maybe you can help me with a search. I'm looking for the gold paint that's used on the frames of fine art paintings. It's not sold in spray cans at Lowes, etc. It's a rich, deep gold. Is that a paint that you're familiar with?

    This is unbelievable!!! It looks so perfect! Do you mind me asking what spraying tool you are using? I have painted my son’s book shelf with a Fine paints of Europe brush - in a paint booth, wearing a painting suit, and yet there are specs of dust all over 😭 I think it comes from the brush!!

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  Рік тому +1

      I'm using a Satajet x5500 here. While the dust definitely could be coming from your brush....that's only part of it.
      The surface itself could've still been dusty (it's crazy difficult to get your substrate fully clean enough) and the ambient dust in the air will all contaminate your painted surface.
      Even my project here is not 100% dust free. I do the best I can with making an air tight plastic booth like you see in the video, and also i go through at least 5 rounds of cleaning the substrate before spraying. all this to say, it's not only the brush's fault. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment!

    Gorgeous work! But when taking the tape off, did any of the paint on the wood come with it? I've found that if I don't take the tape off before the paint dries, when pulling the tape off, the paint on the wood part will come with it in some places. Looks like you took the tape off when it was completely dry. How do you avoid that from happening?
    BTW, is that real gold leaf? And did you sell that piece? If so, can I ask for how much?

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  5 місяців тому

      Thank you:)
      None of the paint peeled off when tape was removed. That almost never happens with oil based paint. That’s more common in water based, acrylics or latex paints.
      However, a properly prepped, primed and painted surface should not have paint peeling off of it.
      If it’s peeling, that means there wasn’t proper adhesion - which most likely means the surface wasn’t adequately Cleaned or sanded or primed well enough.
      But in the future, if you need to remove tape after the paint has dried, you can use a sharp razor to score the paint along the tape line then pull the tape.
      It’s not real gold leaf…just gold leaf that I bought from hobby lobby - it was inexpensive!

    Because I am not a painter, I am going to ask a silly question that I haven’t asked but I have thought many times… on a wood piece that it is going to have the paint stripped out, and sanded, why does it need to be cleaned and washed first?

    • @KaylaPayne
      @KaylaPayne  9 місяців тому

      Not a silly question at all. It’s a common question! Sanding a dirty surface essentially grinds the dirt, grease and grime into the porous wood. Sanding doesn’t strip away the dirty, that’s why it needs to be cleaned first, then sanded. Hope this helps! xo
