Oh girl! You nailed it!! I’ve been a huge fan of Fusion Mineral paint for years! Hands down: The best paint ever! Love the contrast of the Ash and the original finish. Very, very bougie my friend 😍 Hugs, Heidi
Thank you! Fusion is so different than other paints -the coverage is so good. And it's so easy to work with. I didn't know how the grey-blue Ash would work with the brown, but I was nicely surprised! I'll try to keep up the bougie-ness lol 😆
Thank you so much! Fusion is great for furniture, it's such a nice paint too with with. I've only used it on furniture and picture frames - what have you used it on?
I can't even tell you how much I appreciated running into this video. I have an old china cabinet of my grandmothers that is just as horrible. From the french applique on top to the clunky monstrosity ornamentation on the bottom (much like your doors!) I have always hated it and wasn't sure how to deal with it. My gosh, now I will just try removing all that nonsense, and then get down to the actual piece - which doesn't have a bad shape at all - and then it might be fun to paint it.
I'm so glad you found us, too! I was so shocked to find out that all that applique stuff was only foam. And it was really satisfying ripping it all off. Definitely remove it all, patch and sand if you need and then paint it into something you'll love! Have fun with your new project!!
@@HomeCulture Thank you! I'm going for it! (My mouth fell open at that foam, and I went to look at what I have. I have a feeling I'll find the same. It's the same era...)
@@greenshp For 40 years we thought it was wood. They did do a good job painting it to look the same as the rest that was really wood. And some how they made that foam super hard. It never dented even though my parents moved several times. I'm sure it's some product that is now banned due to health reasons 😂😂
@@HomeCulture My grandmother died about 10 yrs ago, and for some reason, pressured on the spur of the moment, I kept that monstrosity. LOL But I always assumed it was wood, just really BAD 1970s taste wood. I'll bet those darned moldings are foam. 😄 Grandma would be mortified. I intend to attempt to remove them, do some repairs, and paint the whole thing mustard yellow. Revenge on those 70s no-taste manufacturers will be sweet.
@@greenshp Mustard yellow will look amazing! Do it! And exact your revenge for the terrible designs of the 70s! And I'm sure our families paid good money for this future that just turned out to be foam!
Thank you! No I haven't had the opportunity for an entertainment unit -- but that would be so fun! I guess it would be like making over 2 china cabinets at the same time. I love the idea of it!
Loving the gray Fusion paint and the wallpaper idea inside. The hardware looks great, too. However, not loving the ugly brown contrasting old finish. But it’s your piece so whatever.
I love that you called it ugly brown! Imagine the whole cabinet, such an overwhelming amount of shiney brown! I'm glad styles change 😂 Thank you for the comment and the laugh!
Thank you! Fusion says this is primer, paint and protector all-in-one. I didn't seal or wax this cabinet....that being said, I have started using a protective finish on Fusion. On dark colours you can see marks if you drag something over the surface, most times they wipe off, but I don't want to think about it. I love the feel of wax over Fusion, it's really nice. I've also used Saman brush on clear coat and even sprayed some Behr clear coat just recently. All had good results. Fusion is still my go to for furniture for sure. But just to be extra careful, I do now add a protective layer. Funny thing about this cabinet -- I'm going to be REPAINTING it soon! I love this colour, but it's too dark in the basement. So complete makeover time!
It's so disappointing when you think of what it cost someone to buy furniture decades ago and find out that what they/you thought was wood is actually substandard material. 😢
I kept the foam and plastic bits to show my mom and she was shocked. They bought that when they had a young family, I think they expected better quality for their money. But it's lasted over 40 years surprisingly!
@@HomeCultureI think anyone would just be excited to see someone else get some use out of it and if that means making it your own then so be it. It’s beautiful by the way
@@cassandrabenson4963 Thank you! I agree - I know I would be excited if someone made use of something I gave them and made it their own! That's a great way to look at repurposing things.
If you had cut the top of that cabinet off and made it straight if would’ve been so much nicer. You could’ve also used each piece as a stand-alone. The bottom by itself would made a beautiful credenza.
I think the doors are the ugliest - I tried to think of how to fix those, but the glass is cut to fit and I didn't want to have custom glass made! I agree the bottom is actually a pretty nice piece, I might end up just keeping that piece when we finish the basement. I actually did considered cutting that hump off the top - but I left it because it would be the same brown as the top of the bottom piece. 70's furniture so fun to redo because they had some crazy style - and my parents paid money for this! Thanks for the comment!

WOW THAT TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL
Thank you so much. I couldn't believe how different it looks!
I like the wallpaper on the bottom back and inside of doors. A little surprise. Piece turned out great!!!!
Thank you! A surprise - that's exactly how I feel about the wallpaper!

Thank you so much! The brown was just too overwhelming!
I love your energy! Glad I found your video! I have an old cabinet in my garage and I want to bring it back to life 😅
Thank you!!! I'm still amazed every time how just changing the colour of furniture can completely update it!
Beautiful!!
Thank you! It's nice to reimagine this cabinet I've known all my life. The brown was just so blah.
That is just beautiful! I too love Fusion paint but I have yet to try it on furniture but I am determined to now. You got great results!
