How I Used Paint and Stain to Makeover this Vintage China Cabinet

- This was a great furniture painting project! This china cabinet was given to me at an estate sale and decided to give it a huge makeover using paint and wood stain as glaze.
I used a gallon of $10 Valspar mis-tint paint from Lowes for the paint, Minwax dark walnut wood stain to glaze, and Varathane semi-gloss water based polyurethane for the top coat.

That Shabby Guy I know I just said something similar the other day. But please make a video of when why what it does what it looks like when you use regular paint, chalk paint, water base stain, oil base stain, wax, poly, clear coat, doing the stain over paint and everything else there is when it comes to different ways of restoring/ painting furniture. I have never painted furniture but I’m going after it this weekend and would love to see a video like that. Would just make a beginner feel comfortable and know what is for what and all the options and looks you could go for. Your a really trustful guy and love learning from you! You could literally just sit there and talk and show old pieces of furniture don’t even have to paint! I watch ALOT OF UA-cam I honestly think the video would kill it and acourse help a lot of people! Hope to see it soon! Much love homie!
That Shabby Guy and also if your going for a rustic look or distressed whatever you wanna call you would you paint it make the scratches then glaze it to have the distressed parts really pop?
Before and after pic or video at the end would be great.
I have a monster like this that I recently inherited and I considered painting it. But I got cold feet and cleaned and oiled it instead. You did a terrific job!
@@andrewyaadigg the same team I'm not 🚭🚭🚭🚭🚭
I can’t believe you have a son .. you look more like brothers 🤣
I love your work and you give me the confidence to spray 👍🏽
I thought the same thing. When he said it was his son, I thought that was him and that a 2 year old was going to enter the frame. Sheesh.
Ursula O'Brien I thought the same thing lol
The piece is stunning! I have a (sewing) room full of odd & end pieces of furniture I want to.paint. You have inspired me to purchase a paint spray gun! I gave subscribed😁
Right! I thought he was in his 20s...with no kids.
If you don't know his face, from the voice only he sounded like a really old fat white guy lmao but you see the picture he's like 25 or something, but then he have a son and I be like wtf??!
I was surprised how much I liked it after you painted. Great job!
Thanks!
Totally. Me too. I was thinking the door details are just too much. But toned down tremendously with the color choice.
You've taken a nice piece of furniture & turned it into an amazing and gorgeous piece of furniture. Love it!!!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
I love how you transition classic pieces to update them. This piece could easily fit into a contemporary home setting, and really stand out. Just stunning! I have been painting thrift store furniture pieces for decades, as that was my only option when I was young. Cheap pieces turned into something unique. Just love your work! Absolutely splendid!!!
I love everything about this. The ornate piece, the blue paint and the glaze finished. Just beautiful!
I love using those gloves, and if you're careful you can keep reusing them for a while. Definitely worth the money. Also, this piece turned out amazing. I had initially thought a cast iron look for the hardware to keep some of that antique flair, but the gold really made it pop. Nice.
Yep! They are reusable. I'll often flip then inside out when I take then off, let the sweat dry out and use then later lol
Gees that glazing made such a difference. I was not keen on that blue by itself, but wow, after the glazing, it gave a whole new depth to the cabinet. You're a patient man.
I love what you did with this piece of furniture. The colors could be used in most rooms and with most tradituional color schemes. You really have a genius talent for this and i applaud that you are teaching your soon this highly skilled craftsmanship trade.. Not many folks left around like you today... Bravo Absolutely loved it..
I've been doing furniture for about... never mind...I'm old.
My point, my dear shabby guy, yr great at teaching an old dog new tricks. In almost every piece you make, you pull out some trick that makes this old heart soar. I've been binging since I found you.
So keep me in wonderment. Innate talent and a bag of tricks.
Just beautiful and I have in the past used stain to antique a piece of furniture and so glad you show us in great detail how to glaze. Thank you for giving all of us inspiration.
Definitely inspired my husband and I! Subscribers!
Absolutely beautiful!!! I realize how much work you had to get the cabinet the way it looks now. It is so gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this video.
Thank you!
Nothing more satisfying than peeling painter’s tape from a completed paint job, and seeing that nice, crisp edge. Love the colour of this piece. I suspect that is a Cutlery Drawer (or Silver Drawer) on the left. Back in the day, when you had silver plate flatware (cutlery) or, if you were very lucky, sterling silver that had been handed down to you, you would clean it then put it in a special case or Silver Wraps (Silver impregnated felt wraps with little pockets, that stopped it from tarnishing), and keep them in your Silver Drawer. 👍
I just love how you paint the furniture with out spending a lot of money with expensive products.
Beautiful! I love the antiquing of the white back too! Very clever
Beautiful. Also, it's so satisfying every time I watch you use the paint sprayer. It goes on so smoothly. I just love your work.
Thanks! It is fun to watch the paint go on. Much more fun than watching it dry!
I love how the stain makes the design pop!
the stain made all the difference. that is absolutely gorgeous.
The stain, meh.
I like how you work your refinished products look like it new pieces. You don't cut corners and it show. I especially like that you refinish the interior of a piece and not just the exterior
, I have watched other people doing makeovers and they cannot hold a candle to your work
Thank you very much!
Love it! I like how you painted the inside lighter and did the glazing. It’s so gorgeous and unique.
At first I cringed, thinking before was better than that blue. Then I saw the after. Shock. Gorgeous.
When you said paint it blue I thought oh no, but it turned out beautiful!!!!
It has a wonderful shabby/chic/beachy feel!
Awesome job, well done. 10 Stars!!! 👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️
That was only 3 stars LoL
If we're being technical, I got 3 thumbs up and 3 stars. I'm not sure what the thumbs up to star ratio is, but I'll take it.
I've been wanting to tackle this project for YEARS!!! Yours turned out beautiful😍😍😍👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💕💕
Wow! Amazing transformation! Love it!
Beautiful China cabinet. What a find! Loved the color, and staining technique that you chose to use. Looks great! Jill
You just make everything look so easy with your confidence!
This process was very popular in the 60’s and 70’s. My Dad taught me how to do this. We called it an antique finish. I have a church pew that I painted a solid dark dark red. It never seemed finished. Now I know why! I’m going to use your technique! Thanks.
Oh yes. I have people tell me all the time about how it was popular back then. I've heard it called glazing, antiquing, and most of the "older" ones use the term "pickling". :D
That's right, "antiquiquing", "pickling", what goes around comes around 🙂
I absolutely love the way this piece turned out!!!!
As I said about another video, you attention to detail puts you in a different category. You're work has it all
Inspiring
Absolutely, gorgeous. I love your technique, you have inspired me to try bigger pieces, and your tips are priceless.
Wow! Just wow! Amazing transformation!
That looks great the colour suits the cabinet

You seem to keep a really clean work area. If it was me. I'd have rags and stuff allover. LOL

Wow, that's a pretty amazing result! The details in that piece look even better by the time you get done
Great job... first thing I all most hit the floor when you said my son you look to young... he looks like your little brother...anyway great job..😊
Love guys who know how to do stuff. I even learned things just watching you take something apart. Thank you.
Beautiful. The glazing gave it an almost metallic dimension. Very powerful.
If you didn't tell us it was your son. I would have thought it was you from a older video. It's great to get the kids involved. Keep up the great work.
I think the results are magical.
Gorgeous! So glad you invested the time into painting the inside. It really paid off. Stunning.
Just gorgeous! That is a beautiful piece of furniture. Loved watching you work...you're so fluid...like a dancer or one performing Aikido. Thank you for sharing~
lol thanks! Glad you're enjoying it!
It's awesome how we can't take those heavy, clunky wood pieces from the 70's/80's and turn them into beautiful works of art that look light and airy. Great job - love the blue color you chose.
Kathy Toms i see people painting over antiques, oak and mahogany and it breaks my heart but 70’s and 80’s furniture? I have no regrets! Good luck
WOW!! YOU GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO!!! GORGEOUS PIECE! You go Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love What you did to the China cabinet... beautiful.
Thanks! It sold to someone that drove 4 hours round trip for it!
On camera, it looks like a silvery blue🤗. Silver accents would be gorgeous too. I love it🤗
I enjoy refinishing furniture and create something new from something old. Thank you for some new ideas.
Beautiful..I love watch the ins n outs of your work
That sprayer looks epic! Wow what an undertaking ! Beautiful work ! I enjoy your videos! Thank you.
So beautiful! I like the inside painted white...it gave the piece more depth. Great job! Thanks for the tip on using wood stain as a glaze!
I knew I WANTED to paint the inside white. At the same time I knew I DIDNT. Lol. All blue with glazing would have been neat but I think the white really made the piece. Thanks for watching!
Simply Gorgeous. Awesome job.
Wow!!! What a beautiful job! Love it!!
This is my favourite piece you have renovated 👍

Gorgeous cabinet
Beautiful. Fabulous job.
Stunning! You're very talented, we want you at our house😃 Hard to believe you're old enough to have a son that age though. He'll thank you for those youthful genes when he hits middle age. Looking forward to seeing more projects you do.
You totally look old enough to be his dad. I don't get why people keep saying that.
I think I'm old enough to be his dad. :) I've been "plagued" with looking young all my life so it doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me. Even my friends say we look more like brothers.
Looks great. LOVE your work, thanks for sharing.
I NEED THAT SPRAYER!!! I've been binge watching your videos, and I can't wait to get my hands dirty and redo some furniture!! Awesome work!!
