    Great video! It was nerve wracking everytime it almost started haha! Also learned a lot about the VATS system and I'm sure it will help others. I like how you explain what you're doing, and nice clear close ups. Thanks for putting the time and effort into this video. Was fun to watch!

      It was definitely a great learning experience dealing with the VATS system and hopefully the Gator by pass module will help other people who may be in the same situation I was.

      I had a 92 park avenue with the "computer chip key" it had 289,000 miles original engine trans when I got rid of it. Both still fine. However car was so rusted it wasn't safe. Anyways being a first year model plus having 250k miles it had quirks. One of em was occasionally the chip wouldn't read. On that car it would shut down the fuel pump and possibly injectors as well it would still crank though. The bad part was it shut down for 15mins. If you tried it before 15mins the clock would re start. So you could wait 14 mins, try it then have to wait again. Anyways from what I understand about the system the chip was just a resistor. Each one had a different ohms value. I was told years ago you could have a gm dealer run the Vin and give you a # for what resistor you had. Then either buy a key cylinder set online or buy a key, file it down to fit the cylinder in the car, then splice in longer wires, tuck the original cylinder under the dash, then install another cylinder in the column. That way the vats system is effectively bypassed.

    As an owner of an 83 Bird, I am happy you got this car. It has no business in a grave yard. You would have saved yourself a lot of time and money with this VATS system by using the free software for reprogramming the ECU on these cars and unchecking the box that says VATS.

      Nice that's awesome I had an 83 Trans Am in high school. Thanks yeah I agree it had no business being in that yard at all. Transmission does need to be replaced. Actually came across an 86 Firebird yesterday that I'm going to pick up later this month. It's got the T5 manual transmission and the 2.8V6. I'm thinking I'm going to take the T5 and put it into the 91 Firebird. Rebuild a 700 R4 from that car. And then pull the 2.8 V6 out of the 86 and drop in a 350/rebuilt 700R4 into the 86 and restore that one too. Haha I also have a pair of 84 Trans ams I'll be picking up too later in October. To build as well, haha come across some really good deals when I'm out doing my internet installs.

That Gator bypass moduleI picked up seemed to work really well. You can fully bypass VATS by having a chip burned for the ecu, and removing and bypassing the relay in the kick panel. Or you can get a sign wave generator and feed that to ecu and bypass the relay. But since you figured out the resistor value you can get a key cut and keep VATS. I'm one of the few hat has VATS operational in my LS swapped car.
    Don't forget to change the diff fluid before driving it much, and re pack the front wheel bearings, commonly over looked on these.

I had a 91 that was engine swapped when I was 15 years old and I'm now 21 years old trying to get back into owning a firebird again, my old one was sold out from under me by my mother to a drag racer who still drag races it to this day.

      @@fullyloadedkustoms Yes indeed, i don't exactly have an exact year I want. Sadly im in the states so they are ALL ragged out. That is unless you are looking to spend 10K on one that has some high mileage. I greatly love the 91-92's due to the aerodynamic nose cone but its virtually impossible to find one that isn't spiderwebbed. My 91 I had was a cancer victims car named Sam Ross. He built it in his shed with all sorts of goodies. It sat for 10 years after he died where someone bought his home from the bank and inherited the firebird in the shed. Then they listed it for 500 bucks for a no title v6 firebird. Boy was I happy, 350 with bunch of goodies and AutoZone special cosmetics lol!

      I did call David T's about the VATS system they didn't have anything in stock for that. And I was just down there in Edmonton yesterday at the Pick-n-Pull and was able to get a ton of parts off a few Firebirds that were in their yards. David T's yard is pretty wild to see in person I actually filmed a video there not too long ago. Really cool in person to see amount of Camaros Trans Ams and Firebirds they have there

    With that car having over 200,000 miles. that transmission would have suffered , especially with the fluid and filter not changed. It would explain it’s current state. Also when you filled it I think you added too much as. The top part of the shaded area on the dipstick is for when the car has been driven in hot weather for some time ONLY. I’m sure you are aware of that though. Kudos for saving this rare bird and I LOVE your joy and enthusiasm when things work out👍👍😀 I own a 82 Trans Am since 1992 and it’s now covered 226,000 miles on the same 200c tranny and 4bbl 5 litre engine. If you look after your ride without abuse they last well. Sadly many do not. I also agree for the age and mileage that interior is excellent. Keep making the vids . I am learning a few things about the later 3rd gens too👍👍😉

The transmission is definitely wrecked though I do have a new 7004 transmission for it I will be swapping over here in the next few months once I'm done working on the 1980 Scottsdale I have currently got in the shop right now. My Trans Am is white. I own it since 25 years. 305 TBI. Everything works great. Exchanged the Standard Cool Fan switch for Hypertech 4026, because the Standard always broke, following radiator boiling. Used some more performance parts from Hypertech (Power Chip+Thermostat) to get more performance from the TBI. A high performance ignition coil is a good investment. I use Accel 140008. Car has Borla stainless exhaust. Never buy the great looking Chinese stainless headers. They are absolute junk. Will change next time the Chinese crap for he Hedman 68481. I had Edelbrocks, which worked great, but no more spares like the Y-pipe to get. Believe me, after 25 years I know all the little gremlins which can happen. More infos, just ask me.

    Hey man! I completely loved your enthusiasm!! I felt like I was right there with ya! That car should NOT have been junked!! I had an ‘84 same color, with louvers too. Someone (before me) put an ‘88 front and tail lights on it. I used that car for years! I think, with that flat wide hood, you should paint your logo on it when it’s done!!

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  Рік тому

      I agree definitely the care should not have been sitting in the wrecking yard for as long as it did. I'm lucky I live in a low population area like 10,000 people. had I lived in the city that car probably would have been stripped down. That's an awesome idea I'm going to write that one down on the shop board.

      Oh that's sweet right on how long did you have that 84 Firebird for? I used to also have an 83 Camaro in high school I was my first car sucks that I lost it. Going to also plan on doing a high school car replica rebuild on that 83 sports coupe I used to have for the channel.

    Great find, and you are correct you don't see 91 very often, actually for me never. I owned an 85 Firebird and 86 IROC many moons ago. Seeing you trying to fix transmission reminded me how mine went out on IROC, the same as yours. I had it rebuilt but it never shifted properly after that, so i sold car. My suggestion get a good replacement and keep fluid clean, this is the downfall with those transmissions. Great project. Cheers from Sydney Nova Scotia

    • @fullyloadedkustoms
      @fullyloadedkustoms  Рік тому +1

      Yeah actually come to think of it the only other places I've seen the 91 style was at David Ts firebird and Camaro yard in Edmonton. He's got over 1500+ camaros/Trans Am and Firebirds there. Other than his place I've actually never seen that style anywhere else before. Oh it sounds like these 700r4s have a common issue. I was actually looking into swapping in a T5 manual transmission over the winter same with doing a full repaint on the car. That would be sweet I'd like to get an Iroc Z to redo for the channel would be fun.

    Great job learning and teaching how to bypass the VATS... As for that car sitting in a junkyard for 10 years? Were the junkyard owners keeping 24 hour security around that car to make sure nobody took any parts off it? Here in the States, that car would have been stripped of most of its parts long before the first couple of months and would not have made it anywhere near 10 years. Also, most American yards won't sell complete vehicles but there are a few that will but in some states it is not legal for them to do which is sad because so many decent older cars end up getting crushed when they could have easily been put back on the road.

      Hey thanks, I live in a very low population area. Town only has maybe 10,000 people. 20,000 people including all the surrounding areas. Within 100 Miles. And haven't seen any 3rd gen Firebirds out cruising the area in the last few years. Hahah probably because the 3 that were ended up at this wrecking yard. Yeah some of these cars that were in there were the owners Vehicles most of the new stuff was all the Salvage, the older stuff was more stuff he has purchased.

    You are right that the car wasn't supposed to start. A lot of VATS cars that old have had the resistor bypassed under the dash, so it might have the right resistor wired in to the ignition wire. Another thing that could happen is the resistor was a #1, which the stopped using early on because a blank metal key was close enough in resistance to start the car. I was automotive locksmith and have bypassed many vats cars by wiring in the correct resistor. Cool video.

      Oh really damn that sucks, both times when I change out the transmission fluid and filter there was chunks of the clutch plates in the pan.
