  • ME221 ECU Install Attempt 02. As some of you may have seen, the first attempt ( • Basemap Upload, Sensor... ) was cut short by voltage regulation issues. This meant that the standalone ME221 ECU had to be benched until I found a workaround. That workaround took the shape of a Mk1 NA MX5 alternator which was swapped into my my car in the last episode ( • Alternator Replacement... ). As the Mk1 alternator has an internal voltage regulator I hope this modification will bypass the issue with my 2nd hand Gen 1 ME221 PnP ECU, and allow me to safely start the car without any over charging issues. If this is the case I'll then be going back into the tuning software (MEITE) to activate the LTT (Long Term Trim) auto tune function. This will permit the ECU to make small adjustments to fuelling to get closer to the Target AFR figures. In order for this to work the car needs to be driven around at operating temperature - sounds like a good excuse for a test drive!!
    If everything works as it should this build will be officially back on track..
    The ECU in this video is a Gen 1 ME221 (black board), but this procedure will also apply to the Gen 1 ME442, AND the Gen 2 ME221 & ME442 (white board). Many parts of this video will also be applicable to other popular standalone plug & play ECUs for the MX5, for example, the Megasquirt MS2 & MS3, and Speeduino boards.
    The car in this video is my 2001 Mazda MX5 - the latest Fast Rust project car. Fun & reliable daily driver is my goal for this iconic sports car. If you want to follow along with my 'Miata Journey’, check out this playlist: • Mazda MX5 / MIATA - ...

    Have just marathoned the series so far and I just want to say keep up the good work and thanks for making a really informative series that Joe Bloggs can relate to. I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing to a 2000 plate and will also be doing the secondhand part thing and it's refreshing to see others doing the same, and documenting the problems that can come from that.
    Really appreciate the content, you're the very first channel I've actually set alerts for!

      Thanks David, glad you've enjoyed the series so far! The build has slowed down a bit since I'm waiting on the G19 supercharger kit, but I've still got a few vids in the pipeline so stay tuned. Good luck with your build, I hope you have less drama than me! Cheers. James

    I have been so wanting someone to do this you explain the tuning software really well (more of that!) I’m a noob to the ecu and tuning and I’ve learnt more from you on the set up than from ME’s own vids!!

      Thanks Chris. I was a noob before this build! Been learning on the fly but hoping to get some good info together in these videos. More to come next episode. Cheers.

    I have an ME442 in my 2004 MSM. I solved the flashing immobiliser light in a different way. In case you're interested, here is the solution from my notes:
    Immobilizer unit transmits serial data to ECU on pin 3S using an open collector/drain type driver. If the ECU does not present at least 10V to the immobilizer, the immobilizer will flash an error sequence on the security lamp on the instrument panel: 2-long, 4-short.
    - Measured stock ECU input resistance between 3S (comm pin) and 4S (ignition (12V)) unpowered. Found 5.7 kOhm
    - Connected 10k pull-up to 12V ignition on pin 3S
    - Problem resolved

    Just started the 5 with the me221 seems ok...but had to change a few parameters.
    You been a massive help so far.thank you

      Thanks mate. This ECU stuff has been a learning process for me I'm by no means an expert. Just sharing what I've learnt so far. I will eventually get it tuned by a professional when the supercharger is fitted.

    Hi :) Matt here from ME - your Wideband P is set very low - its always best to get mormal closed loop working and holding it correctly and THEN enable LTT :) Good video though!

    • @mtechautomotive
      @mtechautomotive 3 роки тому +1

      i.e if your target AFR is still large even just on closed loop, and doesent correct quickly, then LTT will not operate as expected - I always strongly advise against booting it on a basemap - iot will most likely be down on power due to the timing being backed off in basemaps (for this very reason) but if something is out, it could melt something! :)

      Hi Matt. Good to hear from you. There’s obviously still a lot to learn isn’t there! I tried to digest as much information off your website as I possibly could before delving in. To be honest I had intended to get the car tuned NA and not run it on the basemap for any extended length of time, but after the issue with the voltage regulation it forced my hand a little so am driving around carefully on the basemap for now whilst keeping a close eye on the AFRs. Beyond this I don’t intend to do any tuning myself & have Alex Hickson lined up once the supercharger is fitted. The target AFRs were not that far out initially, I think the lambda mod was applying 5-6% max to start with. If you want me to add any comments to the video description, or pin a comment up regarding LTT mode I’ll do that no prob. Cheers. James.

    Hi James, great videos mate. When you took the car for a test drive after fitting is that just on the basemap before getting it properly tuned?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  2 роки тому

      That's right yeah. Was on the basemap all the way up to the supercharger being fitted. Now in the process of being remote tuned by Alex Hickson. Not really ideal driving on a basemap for so long but hey, it worked.

      @@FastRust Happy days 😁 I'm installing mine this weekend and want to drive it back to work on Tuesday where I store it. Alex said he will tune it slightly for me Monday night so it drives sweet but if there isn't enough time to do it and i can get it back to the yard on the basemap then i can muck about with it during the week. Love the videos, chop chop with the next 😁

      Hey I've been filming Capri stuff because that's what people wanted to see, no sooner do I do that everyone wants to see the mazda again, I can't bloody win 🤣 I'll get on with it asap. Good idea getting a mild tune of Alex just to help you get by. Basemap wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination!

      So does the mk1 generator needs any wiring mod or just straight in and that’s it?

    Has anyone else found that when installing an ME442 whilst supercharging the rpm dials stop working and the speed dial is stuck at certain speeds? All other lights work
    If so how did you fix it?

    Would you be able to give me Alex Hickson's number ? I am in desperate need for a tuner.

    2nd gen (white) me221/442 would still have this voltage issue? How much of torque/hp would you expect just from ecu swap? Worth it or just a must for a FI setup?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  11 місяців тому

      Apparently even stock ECUs are known to have the voltage issue.. maybe aftermarket alternators who knows?! If it happens revert to a mk1 alternator. In my opinion there's no real need to run a standalone ECU on a stock engine. If you're going the forced induction route.. yes, definitely.

      Hi John. You've 2 options, either ask for recommendations for rolling roads local to you, or go for a remote tune. I intend to do the latter and use Alex Hickson. I can get you his contact details if you wish. Thanks. James.
