How to Set Your Engines Base Timing - ME221 ECU Install Part 04 | Supercharging an MX5 Miata Ep 12

  • Now the MX5 is up and running on the ME221 PnP ECU I need to check and confirm base timing. This is a relatively simple procedure using the tuning software (MEITE) providing you have access to a timing gun/light. I will run through the entire process in this video, and once completed, will ensure the engine runs at the commanded degree of ignition advance. This is very important to check before attempting to tune the car either by remote tune or on the dyno so modifications made to the Ignition Timing table are accurate. Once the base timing is confirmed the ME221 will be fully calibrated pending tuning. The ECU in this video is a Gen 1 ME221 (black board), but this procedure will also apply to the Gen 1 ME442, AND the Gen 2 ME221 & ME442 (white board). Many parts of this video will also be applicable to other popular standalone plug & play ECUs for the MX5, for example, the Megasquirt MS2 & MS3, and Speeduino boards.

    Thank you for this series. I like your presentation style in that you don't dwell too long on the fine detail, but you also don't assume knowledge that your viewer might not have. I'm trying to get a base map on ME221 running well on a NB8A Turbo in Australia, this video put a lot of niggling questions to bed for me. The car had a modified cam sensor trigger setup for an old ECU that needed a single trigger rather than factory, so I have not been able to assume anything in this process. You provided Factory setup clarification... Thanks again.

      Thanks Richard. These ECU based episodes have been all about gathering/condensing information found scattered over the internet. Glad to hear you found it helpful.

    Quality content, thanks for the love and time you put into those. Have you done a video about this computer program as well as the hardware that comes alongside? Cheers mate

      Thanks, appreciate it. I haven't done anything on the hardware side because it makes zero sense to me! The computer program is MEs free tuning software, I'm comfortable with the basics but when the supercharger is fitted I intend to get a professional tuner.

    fantastic videos as always! interesting to see how it differs from the old way on the Capri (i recently changed mine from 10 to 8 BTDC to see if it was better). Can't wait to see how the supercharging goes!

      Cheers guys! Yeah it's interesting, I still prefer old school tech to be honest, but am getting to grips with this stuff - slowly! What issues were you having at 10?

      @@FastRust Yeah seems like you know your stuff with the new tech! Long story but basically, a garage set it to 10 as i was having problems starting the car, when I got it back it still wouldnt work and I found out the Accelerator pump in the carb wasnt working. Now its great but I thought 10 was too much as people seem to set them between 6-8 plus I thought it was pinking (turns out thats a different noise i've not tracked down). I've tried it at 8 now but its seems a bit sluggish so, unsure if I should go back to 10. As far as im aware its a standard 2.0 on a weber 32/36.

      6 - 8 is the norm for standard engines. There is an argument for being cautious with timing as 4 star back in the day had a higher octane than todays regular unleaded so people worry about pinking. That said, I've ran mine at 10 with nothing but a cam with no issue. I did, however, become educated in the sound of pinking when I fit the 1.6 head 😆 Kinda sounds like lots of ball bearings bouncing around in the engine. Most noticable when you put your foot down in a high gear up a hill at low - mid rpm. If it's gonna do it, that's when it'll happen!

      @@FastRust My Escort pinks quite a lot at the moment due to a vacuum leak 😂 but the Capri sound is a bit different. You cant hear it if you rev the engine on its own (which might be normal). Not sure if it'll work but heres a little video of mine making the noise at 0.3 and 0.8 seconds at its loudest. I thought it was pinking with how it reacted to the accelerator pedal but a mechanic mate said he didnt think it was that and something rattling 🤔

    Ive recently got my me442 hooked up and found my base timing was at aboit 13°BTDC and have adjuated it accordingly. Does this mean my timing was out on the factory ecu or just some different controls from fsctory to ME add some different errors.

    1600 head on 2L block, was it faster in any way?
    Great work mate, you nearly 4k too 👍

    • @FastRust

      Yeah it was faster. Throttle response was better. But it was a lot of hassle with such a high CR. If I knew how to mod the dizzy when I did it, that would have helped loads.

    Hey, im running the same ecu, same nbfl, just a 1.6. On first startup my timing was literaly retarded the same amount as yours (i set the offset on 107). Makes me think maybe it's something with the basemaps

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  Рік тому

      Possible. I think it's more to do with slight variations in cam sensor/trigger wheel position..

      Ha, no, this Feb. Because of work commitments I have to bulk film these eps then stagger the release. Otherwise you'd get 3 vids all at once then have to wait 3 months for the next.

    If you had a coil on plug setup. How will you hock up a timing light?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  2 роки тому

      You can clamp to the signal wire going to the coil, that works most of the time. If not you'd have to make a short section of plug wire to go between the coil and the plug, and clamp to that.
