  • The Angels Landing hike is considered amongst the scariest and most rewarding hikes in North America, offering panoramic and stunning views of the canyon. The hike starts from the Grotto Trailhead in Zion National Park and follows the West Rim Trail. The summit of Angels Landing is around 1500 feet above the canyon floor. This video was shot when I hiked up to Angels Landing on March 8, 2019. I had hiked up to the summit twice a couple of weeks before (in February 2019) and there was a lot of ice and snow on the trail at that time - was a pretty scary hike as it was hard to get a foothold due to all the ice. Two weeks later, the ice was all gone and it was a gorgeous hike up to the summit. I did the hike again on March 22, 2019 - it was raining that day, but was still a gorgeous hike. That video can be found at • Angels Landing In The ... .
I shot this footage with a GoPro Hero 7 Black (Dusk White edition). For the most part, the camera did fine, except that it didn't record for a few minutes on my way up.

I did the hike except didn't go to the very top at the end and it was great. I have mobility issues, but used my walking sticks and did ok. You can still see so much without doing that climb. There were a lot of people going up that day and it wasn't worth it to me. Happy Hiking!

polifatts if it wasn’t for the carelessness of the others that are on that narrow trail, might make it bearable. To risk dying because someone else couldn’t be patient, is a valid risk people take when it’s crowded.

This is in the winter when nobody's there, don't even try doing it in the summer. I was in the park for the first shuttle in the morning at 6 am and it was stuffed, the next shuttle was also full but i crammed in anyway, got to the trail and idk how so many people where there already. Hiking that narrow section with back to back people going up and down is the most terrifying thing i've ever done, Im an avid outdoorsman, backpacking, surfing, i've skydived, and this was worse. I've done some very sketchy hikes, the terrain here isn't bad, it's the amount of people that makes it dangerous and unenjoyable, full traffic on a 2ft wide section 1500ft in the air. I have a picture of the narrow part, back to back people, both directions. Im not sure that most people knew how dangerous that was. I do not trust a hoard of strangers to not slip, or bump me, or whatever. Another huge part is how rude everyone was with oncoming foot traffic, extremely inconsiderate, practically pushing me off trail to get their fat unable bodies past me, taking the entire area because they can't balance. Awesome. Most of the hike was great, but what should have been the best part was purely hell for me. Im a very aware person when it comes to risks, having said that i asses those risks and do insane things. But this has way to many unknowns and your basically putting your life in strangers hands to trust them not to slip. National parks are seeing huge numbers of people, and it isn't as safe as it was a few years ago. I will have to return some winter.

I did this hike about 20 years ago, when I was in my early 20s. I don't have a fear of heights, but I respect gravity. The last bit going up over the fin was okay on the way up, but terrifying on the way down. I remember passing two seasoned hikers who were on their hands and knees crawling down. This last bit of the trail is definitely not for the faint of heart. The view from just before ascending the chained area is quite good and getting up to that point is not scary unless you have a true phobia with regard to heights. If you're a calm and focused hiker, this is an unforgettable hike.

I am afraid of heights now, though I wasn't earlier in my life. Now I am 75 and don't have the confidence to balance. Your video was extremely well shot. It showed me exactly how the hike further up is and thank you for that. I have seen many videos but none like this one which is crisp and clear and having fewer persons trekking up is always good when you are shooting a video.

You made a very smart decision to turn back if it was that crowded. It is not worth it - the issue won't be you, but other folks that are ill-prepared and might cause an accident. I also recommend starting the hike with the first shuttle, or (like me), just going in the winter (when they allow cars on the scenic drive) and starting at dawn. You will barely have any people at that time.

@@mr.elastomeric1787 If you are in that area, then definitely do Buckskin Gulch from Wire Pass trailhead. Buckskin is the longest slot canyon (perhaps in the world) at around 16 miles or so. You park at Wire Pass Trailhead (you can Google Map it) and then hike in a wash for around a mile or so until you hit WIre Pass slot canyon. Then you continue on until you hit the confluence with Buckskin - make a right at that T junction and now you are in Buckskin. Go as far as you want to. It is a permitted hike, but no limits on permits and you can buy them for yourself and your dog (dogs are allowed) for $6 per person/ dog, online. Other than that in Zion, you must have done The Narrows. Observation Point is closed from the canyon, but you can do it via the East Mesa Trailhead behind Ponderosa Ranch.
My favorite hike is from Lava Point or the West Rim Trailhead on the Kolob Terrace Road until The Grotto (the start of Angels Landing hike). You have an outfitter drop you off via shuttle at the West Rim Trailhead at sunrise, and then you hike the 15 to 16 miles through gorgeous Zion backcountry scenery. It is 3000 feet elevation drop - that is the good part about doing it this way. You simply hike down. If you want to do it the other way - hike up from The Grotto, past Angeles Landing, you will be climbing up 3000 feet. I much prefer coming down as it is not as tiring.
Finally, I love The Subway hike in ZIon. It is remote, permit only - but a fantastic hike with gorgeous landscape at the end.

I've found through experience that these kinds of hikes often look MUCH scarier on video than they do in person. I did Hidden Canyon, Angels, and a few others in Zion... And also the full Kalalau trail which is also rated in the top 10 most dangerous hikes on the planet. My stomach would turn and my palms sweat when I'd watch the videos of "Crawlers Ledge" on the Kalalau trail. But, when I was there and seeing/doing it in person, I actually felt no fear. Don't underestimate yourself with these hikes. If you're safe and cautious, you can do these hikes with little to no stress. And they don't look near as terrifying as they do on these GoPro cams.

Hi Andrew. I just had one battery, but it was attached to the Refuel extended battery pack which gives you another 5 to 6 hours shooting in 4K. I was using a 128 GB card and used around 25% of the capacity.

If she has a bad knee, I would advise against it. She can go to Scout Lookout, before the chains start (the chains are the last 0.5 mile), but even climbing up to Scout Lookout is a 1000 feet climb (will she be okay with hiking poles)? Maybe she can wait for you at Scout Lookout while you go to the summit of Angels Landing? Apart from the chains and narrow path, there are sections where you need to climb a rock to get to the next part of the trail (i.e. the last half mile is not just one steady climb). You must do it if you can though - it is a lot of fun.

I talked her into trying out the hike and she and her BF are going to - I hope they can finish it.
