I hiked Angels Landing in February. There was a thin coating of snow, which made us climb more cautiously (obviously). A couple of comments on your video. NEVER use the chain to hold your full weight, only to balance yourself. That lady, in the beginning (at 8:13), was careless going on the opposite side of the chain, leaning backwards using the chain and then she moved away far too quickly. Slow and precise is the key, it's not a race. Secondly, gloves and water are a must. If you can use only a secure waist pack, rather than a full backpack, you will better ensure your balance. Great video on a great rock!!

Seeing a few people wobble & stumble makes me think the Park Rangers should maybe have a “test your balance” test station at the bottom of the trail. Especially for those who don’t spend much time outdoors or at height: very different cues for vestibular system when there are no walls or buildings around you 😳
Thanks for doing this vid. We discovered this hike too late in our lives. Too old, out of shape, and with bad knees, so we watch videos like yours and enjoy the view without the danger. For you, I'm sure it's a memory that has enriched your life a little bit more.

@Denny San Diego Glad you enjoyed the video Denny! I did just see that they are going to a permit now for the hike, so, that will limit the number of people on the trail. There are plenty of other safer hikes in Zion though. Hope you have a great visit!

i envision an optional system for treacherous trails such as this where there is a single continuous cable for harness attachment allowing uninterrupted movement up and down while being tethered at all times. let me know what you think. thank you.

Really high quality views and footage. I had to put it into perspective for myself - It's like climbing 38 feet past the top floor of the Sears Tower - on the outside of the building! Just wow.

why don't they do a dual cable system that allows for harnesses like on half dome? when you're passing people, you're basically completely without a safety net

I just got back from there. Absolutely stunning! I'm glad they implemented the permit system. There were a lot fewer people when I got to Angel's Landing than in this video. There were also no rangers waiting to check your permit. If you go through the trouble of applying for a permit, you will probably get one.

Great video! I can’t believe how busy it was, kinda defeats the purpose. I was in Zion in 2019 and did the Observation Point hike, it was busy but nothing like that!

When are you planning to go?
@@EddieAtLarge Sometime next year. There is a trail race I want to run also in Utah so going to plan Zion around that date. They just had the race this past weekend so maybe the week of July 22nd 2023. But man, I am excited! Wife not so much; afraid of heights.
I've been up it twice over the years. IF you can keep your cool on the trail, and IF you pay attention to what you are doing, and IF you have the strength and stamina, then it's not dangerous. It's a long steep trail to get up to the beginning of the difficult trail. The difficult part of the trail is steep and very narrow, with a lot of exposure. The cameras that most youtubers use make the trails look narrower than they are and make the dropoffs look higher. There are significant drops for sure and the trail is narrow, but it is wide enough. Definitely wear shoes with good traction on the rock such as good hiking shoes or trail running shoes. If you are afraid of heights, don't do it. If you will be goofing around and talking with other people, don't do it.

I did this hike 4x's before 2015, I was the only person up there 3x's. The key about it, is... just don't fall down or worry too much about it. The chains aren't necessary but are helpful. I love this trail. Very grounding to be there.
Not falling to my death is my plan for most things
Several people were hanging onto those chains for dear life! I was hoping they were really well embedded to take a lot of weight!

Great video. I can't believe folks bring their kids on this hike. Too many people and some having to go on the other side of the chains to let others pass. I've read the Refrigerator Canyon south of Angels Landing is pretty dangerous. I don't think I'll ever do it.
Hi Gabi! Glad you enjoyed our video! I have to agree that I would never bring a child on this hike. Just one wrong slip or misstep would be tragic. I know they now require a permit for this hike to limit the number of people per day. I think a better idea would be to schedule admittance by the hour as I'm sure most people will want to start the hike early in the morning and there will still be the same overcrowding issues on the trail during that time.
I came from Ireland to do this hike , it was quite easy once you get over the fear of heights. Refrigerator canyon was my fav part.

Although I have 26 static line parachute jumps in the army, I will openly admit to being afraid of heights. I would love to be able to do something like this. The view looks beautiful. Probably not good idea to have a camera hanging off your neck, but would love to photograph it. Are there any hikes out there that are maybe more suited to those with height issues, or any places to photograph safely?
@Jeff Gordon If you decide not to hike Angels Landing, some other options for you may be to take the West Rim traill and only hike up to the Scout Lookout area which is right before the chain section where the Angels Landing hike begins (3.6 mile round trip, 1115' Elevation Gain). It is still a fairly safe and beautiful hike up to that point with amazing views. You can then decide if you want to continue on up Angels Landing or turn around and head back down. Also check out the Observation Point hike. I have not hiked that, but, I have read that the views are just as good or better than the Angels Landing Hike, much safer and way less people. Checking the All Trails app, the East Rim to East Mesa trail to Observation Point is closed. It does show that the East Mesa to Observation Point is open though. From what I can see, you can get to this trailhead from outside of the park (coming from the east side). Per the comments on All Trails, you would need to park about a 1/2 mile from the trailhead due to the poor road conditions (unless you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle). Total hike from the trailhead is 6.7 miles round trip with only a 695' Elevation Gain). I experience real fear when I’m up high like that and exposed (dizziness, nausea, overall sense of dread, etc). I wonder if other people experience those same strong reactions, and just suppress the fear. Or do they not experience fear to that extent? Because honey… I could never do anything like that. I’d literally faint or throw up 😫.
Hi Anese! Glad we could at least virtually bring you along on our hike. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there with these same fears. I noticed one girl when I was nearing the top who I believe was by herself and she was walking really slow and carefully. She looked terrified. I do think some people who are afraid of heights purposely make themselves experience something like this to try to get over their fears and to feel like they've conquered them. Fortunately for me, I don't have a great fear of heights, but, I do respect them. There is nothing wrong with having a fear of heights though. Everyone has different levels of fear of different things. My one motto is "There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity." and we must have respect for all things in this world. I experience all those fear-of-heights symptoms in exposed areas like this. It is real!! Last week, I was just at Zion, Grand Canyon, and Bryce, and did some challenging (for me) hikes with sheer dropoffs. The trails were very well made and I was able to take it slowly. We did not do Angel's Landing, but I've watched dozens of videos like this. I so admire those who do this carefully and respectfully, respecting the heights and other hikers. Beautiful place!! Honestly, the most terrified I got was in Bryce near Sunset Pt. Amazing views, sheer cliffs, and lots of people letting their kids run around and stand on ledges 🤢. Made me so dizzy and scared. Otherwise, I am so grateful I got to see these breathtaking places. Thank you for the video.

My legs might 'turn to jelly'', making it impossible to continue. I wonder if that sometimes happens and people have to be helped down? And what might seem sufficiently safe going up might then seem worse in places going down.
excellent video, I made a similar one when my wife and I hiked it back in 2016. The only difference is yours was much more polished and I love the captions and quality of the video. Also I had one of those old large camcorders so I had to hold it with one hand and hold the chain with the other hand on the steep parts so a lot of my video at that point was pointing up at the sky or sideways ha ha! I'm keeping your video on my playlist to show people the hike that we did but could not properly record ha ha. Side note: I have a terrible fear of heights so this was really a challenge for me. For parts of it I could not look down at the view or I would never have made it to the top.

Congrats! It will be very hot there at that time of year though. 🥵Be sure to take a Camelback water backpack to stay hydrated, lots of sunscreen and maybe a portable swimming pool. Average high of 100 in July. Will actually be a great opportunity to take a dip in the Virgin River when you’re done.

Is there an off season?
We did start early. Winter is the off season I believe, however, It'll be much more dangerous due to snow and ice. They do have a permit system in place now to limit the number of people on the trail each day. I would recommend going as early as possible regardless. You may want to consider biking into the canyon to get in early before the shuttles begin running. That way you can be one of the first people on the trail. I've seen some others on UA-cam who have done that to beat the crowds.

Hey Travis! Unless it's freezing cold, you'll probably see a lot of people no matter what. We were on one of the 1st shuttles out that morning and it wasn't too bad going up, but, coming back down... I'm sure you saw how many people we ran into.
I do know that they went to a permit system this year for Angel's Landing starting on April 1st. So if you are there in March, you shouldn't need one. But, the permit system is needed IMO to limit the people on the trial.
There is a parking lot at the trailhead, but, that is for people staying at the lodge in the canyon area. You'll need to take a shuttle to get there otherwise.
Something I've heard of some people doing is to park outside of the canyon area and ride their bike in. That way they could get there way early before anyone else and get on the trail. Depending on where you can get a parking spot though, it could make for a long bike ride. There are about 5 or 6 parking spaces just outside of the canyon right here: goo.gl/maps/eTn6tRBZRVPYCmKR6 The main parking for the Visitors Center is another 1.25 miles down from there. So you could have a 4+ mile bike ride before you even start hiking. You can drive into the park at any hour, so, you can get there as early as you want. When we went, we got to the gate at 6am and no-one was there so we just drove on through.

@Rich Dombrosky Thanks Rich! Considered that, but, wanted to show and give the real feeling of what it would be like to do the hike. Thought the first person view in real time might be able to help people decide if they could do the hike or not.
Anything can happen. Even a simple trip in your step could be deadly. They could make this hike a whole a lot safer by supplying and making it mandatory that everyone use a short harness once reaching the chained trail. The trail could even use a little more fencing. Then at least hikers would be attached to the chain linked fence if slip and fall.
I was surprised to see some gaps between the chain sections, which don't look all that much safer.
Holy crap man, I'm so glad I did this in January (2021). Colder, no shuttle buses (we actually had to walk the road up as the parking lot was closed and the rangers wouldn't let anybody drive up unless you were staying at the lodge), which all resulted in less people.
lol. Thats one way to avoid the crowds. There’s now a permit system in place to limit the people per day that is supposed to have helped, but, I’ll bet it’s still crowded.

Great hiking to many castle ruins, old Roman Empire " northern-border" forts (Limes paths) and very old Celtic mounds! Also, nice views in the Bavarian Alps and along the Rhine River! (Germans love to hike, so there are many forest restaurants to stop to take a meal break, as well!)
I hike mostly in and around the Taunus Mountains where I live just north of the city Frankfurt am Main.🙂
That sounds very cool. Would love to travel overseas to see old ruins and castles someday. Haven’t been to many places outside of the US and as you know, we don’t have much of anything like that here. There is one amazing castle in Colorado that we visited that was built by one man over a period of 50+ years. Here’s our video on that if you care to watch. I would say the sketchy parts are about a 1/4 mile or so, this includes the chain section.

@Matt Zimmer Thanks Matt! The GoPro was attached on my back pack strap up near my shoulder. I have a small Joby GorillaPod and just slipped one of the legs down through a loop on the backpack strap. No additional stabilizer, just the GoPro Hero 7 Black. I do love the GoPro. Will be upgrading to the 9 Black this fall/winter.

It is definitely something you want to use caution and know you limits, but at the same time if you consider how many thousands of people hike this trail every year, the overall death rate is incredible
Low. More people die swimming each year which is a seemingly safe activity.
Also the bathrooms are a nice addition !

I did see that it is now a permitted hike to limit the numbers on the trail, which I do believe will help keep people safer. Hope you get the chance to hike it with your kids someday!

Hey Eddie, thanks! I really wish, but, I haven’t made it to Yosemite yet. We were just on the east side of the Sierra’s a week ago near Mammoth Lake and the Tioga Pass is still closed. They don’t expect to have it open till sometime in July due to the historic snowfall.

I went to Zion several years ago. Did the Observation Point hike and The Narrows. Wasn’t brave enough to attempt Angels Landing.
@Cheri Greenway We didn’t get to those other hikes while we were there, however, I read that the views on the Observation Point hike are just as stunning as Angels Landing and without the crowds. Hope to make it back sometime soon to do those!

My wife and I did this back in 97. Did you also do the narrows?..we were in our early 40's then..probably couldn't do it now..

Nice video- your timestamp is great. We are planning to visit in the spring. For added safety, can we clip onto the chains like we did at Half Dome- or is it not necessary? I found Half Dome to be pretty easy- want to do it again. Although the next day a women died on it- random rain happened at the top and she slipped. She had a harness but sadly she was not clipped in when it started raining.
I have rope, clips and harnesses. Half dome was very steep near the summit and over a 12 hour hike RT but this one seems to have some trickier spots to it with no chains to grab onto like the sub-dome area of Yosemite that I hated. It is a steep, rocky section you must free scramble (no cable) just before you get to the final HD ascent. I also hiked Mt. Huangshan in China. That was a crazy long and steep climb- mostly with thousands of very steep steps (60,000 of them to be precise.) It also had many steep drop offs, few railings and some optional via feratta sections.
We are in very good shape and like hiking- not too worried about this but I would rather be safe than sorry. We will wear grippy footwear and and gloves. Also, should we get to the visitors center at 6am sharp? We want to avoid big crowds. I would welcome and appreciate any other tips or hikes we should do from anyone who has been to Zion. We are also planning to also hike the slot canyons at Buckskin Gulch (outside of the park.)
What section (timestamp"s") would you say were the most challenging so I can be prepared?
@D G Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. I don't believe it is necessary to clip on, however, that's really going to be up to how comfortable you feel for safety. I don't recall seeing anyone clipping on during our hike. Sad to hear about the woman at Half Dome. I would like to do that hike. Maybe this coming year. There were a few sections that were tricky at Angels Landing were there were no chains to hold on to and too many people on the trail. I would be concerned in those areas if it had been wet from rain or snow. There is a permit system in place for Angels Landing now, so, hopefully it will help keep the numbers down on the trail and make for a safer hike. The hours vary for the 1st shuttle throughout the seasons, so, I would recommend checking with the park to find out when the first shuttle is and get there at least a half hour or 45 minutes prior to departure. Another alternative may be to park and bike into the main canyon. That way you could get in there even earlier. I've seen other people on UA-cam who have done that to beat the crowds. The park entrance is open 24/7. There just won't be anyone at the gate if you get there really early and you'll just drive right through. As far as challenging timestamps, anything after 10:08 just because it starts getting pretty steep and strenuous. Since you are in good shape though, you shouldn't have any issue. Also, just be very careful in any areas without chains. I read that is where most accidents happen and not many happen where there are chains to hold on to. Definitely try to get a permit for "The Wave" (they are very limited). You can apply online for the lottery and that is how we won our permits. Definitely do Half Dome- you have to win a lottery though to hike it so just be aware of that. Also, do the buffet every morning at the very nice Ahwahnee hotel and reserve for diner now. Also, head over to Tuolumne Meadows when you are in the area.
Yes, very sad. We saw the helicopter coming down. I asked if it was a rescue and I'll never forget what the local climber said- "No, it is a (body) recovery." It made me look at the mountain differently. We were just on the same steep section. She also looked to be in even better shape than us. They discourage clipping in but do it! It can save your life. It is a narrow cable section with two way traffic.
The permit process starts in April- not sooner I called unless you know something I don't??? Are you saying before 6am, we can drive to the trailhead? That would be ideal.
THANKS for the tips. The wave looks very nice but quite a drive from Zion- is it really worth it? We did Little Wildhorse near MOAB which was very nice. Plan to do Fiery Furnace. We really like driving out to Chicken Corners, Shafer Trail and Hell's Revenge in MOAB. Morning Glory Arch was a fun easy hike too.
@D G Thanks for the tips on Yosemite. I've marked them on my map. I have not checked into the permit process for timing, so, I am unsure. Yes, you can drive into the park prior to 6am. There just won't be anyone at the gate, however, it is open to drive on through. The Wave is really worth it and I highly recommend it. Such a unique wonder of nature that you won't see anywhere else in the world. If you have time, watch our video to see what I mean, however, as with anything like that, the video can't do it justice. It's something you'll want to experience in person.
We also did Little Wild Horse (and of course have a video for that...) Have not made it to Fiery Furnace, Chicken Corners, The Shafer Trail or Hell's Revenge. Do you take side by sides or Jeeps for those drives?
@@EddieAtLarge FYI, they GPS nearly all major franchise rental vehicles. You can get fined for going off road like Shafer, Long or Chicken Corners. They get a text if you go out of bounds. Might be $1,000 fine and if you damage it- big trouble. Out of Use Fees on top of that until they fix it. Even if you "wash it real good" they will know! They have been doing this a long time. Instead, you can simply rent a "Twisted Jeep" in MOAB (next to the amazing Gilberto's.) It will run you more per day, maybe $300 but it is a much more capable off-road vehicle and they encourage you to go off-road. It also has GPS and you cannot go over something like 15mph on trail and all posted speed limits. I followed their rules as best I could and didn't run into any problems at all. At first, I felt restricted by their clear rules in the agreement, but in reality, I actually found for most trails 10mph was plenty fast anyway. They don't want you to damage the 4x4 system which I guess makes sense.
Hell's Revenge is not to be missed. UTV is def. the way to go. Never put your fingers inside the wheel spoke. It's direct so not like a car. They spin aggressively and quickly when you hit rocks. Many people break fingers and wrists. If you roll, keep hands inside. I took the easier safari route (still not easy) and I was fine. It is a ton of fun.

Hello Jeff, they have now gone to a permit system that will only allow for a limited amount of people to be on the trail. Hopefully this will help with the congestion.
Make it a by permit only hike. Make a safety video mandatory at the time of the permit if you must. Put a ranger at the entry to check the permits and require a release if needed. BUT DO NOT CHANGE THE SCENIC VALUE OF THIS BY PUTTING MORE SAFETY MEASURES IN PLACE. If you hike and climb in nature there are risks, but DO NOT start protecting us from ourselves.
BTW, there are a lot of high risk hikes in Zion, If someone wants 100% security, stay at home and watch videos. I have hiked several of them and came back safe, except for that one where I broke my leg and walked out. Geeze, we are raising a generation of wusses.
Personally I thought watching videos is more scary than actually doing it. I never felt that scared once I was out on the chains
@DMaster81 Agreed. I really enjoyed the entire hike. The only places that I felt any trepidation was while in the crowded areas of the trail.
i think the feeling of liability adds to the stress. if i was doing this alone i might feel better. i don't want to feel responsible for or witness to someone falling over.
I did it with my niece in 2016 as a 60-year old. We got on the trail at dawn and hiked up with everyone going in the same direction. My wife stopped at Scout’s Landing due to her acrophobia. The hike up the spine was not nearly as dangerous as I thought. Stayed on top for an hour and headed down. Loads of folks were heading up by then which made things a little sketchier. As long as everyone is patient and courteous it’s not bad at all. Definitely a hiking highlight. We did the Narrows right after this hike. Great day in Zion!
@Patrick Dalanni Very cool! And impressive to know that you hiked it at 60. Sorry to hear about your wife’s fear, however, we didn’t see any spiders on the way up and I’m sure she would have been just fine. Haha. 😉 Your experience at Angel’s Landing sounds very similar to ours in most every aspect. We did not hike the Narrows though and would like to do that sometime. Looks like a lot of fun! @@EddieAtLarge If you do get back to Zion also consider doing The Subway hike. You have to apply for a wilderness permit. You can do it two ways: Top Down (longer with some rappelling) or Bottom Up. Find some YT videos to check it out. We absolutely loved it!

Dang....the line is such a turnoff. There's gotta be hikes nearly just as good that are empty. We just experienced this in Sedona around Thanksgiving.
@Build Brothers They now have a permit required for Angels Landing to limit the people. I’m sure it will still be packed though. There are other great, less travelled hikes in Zion. Check out Observation Point. Let me guess, the Sedona hike you’re referring to is the Devil’s Bridge? Yes, Sedona is overrun. It’s a shame as it’s one of our favorite places to hike. I guess that makes us part of the problem. 😉

@CheckThisOut77 I am 49. I don't work out a lot, but, I do hike regularly and I feel that I am in decent physical shape and health. This is a fairly strenuous hike. I would not recommend it for anyone who is not used to doing this type of hike, has health concerns or is not in good physical condition. Hope this information helps. Thanks for watching.

The odds of dying on this hike are significantly than being killed by an active shooter in the United States. I’d feel safer hiking this than in a American school.
It's a good hike... not all that "dangerous" if you take it slow, watch your step, use the chains, wear solid hiking boots made for gripping this type of terrain. You'll be good.

ZION is beautiful and Angels Landing seems to be fantastic. There was a recent fall of 1,000 feet so there is that. The thing is people do not come prepared and most of those 13 deaths were probably from stupid mistakes. Saw that woman wearing Converse All-Stars looking "hip" but certainly not suitable for this type of hike. The crowds make this hike the. most dangerous when passing so there is that.
I can't decide if I admire those brave enough to do this or if I should consider those that climb this one brick shy a wheelbarrow load.

Its only unsafe for two reasons: 1) its overcrowded and 2) people with zero outdoor experience go here.
There was a steady line of people on the chains going up and down when we went in Sept 2021 and half were not prepared for the physical climb.

My Wife and, I both 60, did this hike. Im not crazy about heights at all. After watching some videos I really did not want to do it. But we went and it is no where near as bad as the wide angle go pro videos make it look. The spots where there are no chains are there because you don't need chains in those places. A little common sense sense and good shoes make this hike not really very difficult. Its only 5.5 miles and the part with the chains is only about a half a mile.

@Arty Squeezy There have been 13 fatalities according the warning sign at the beginning of the trail that leads to Angels Landing. In my opinion, they need to limit the number of people allowed on the trail and that should help curb these accidents. I read that they may put in a lottery system for the trail to do just that. Hopefully that will happen.
So whar's the earliest you can take a shuttle for that hike? Planning a trip for next year and after seeing how many people, I don't know if i even want to do this hike now.
@Christian Avalos We were there in April and the earliest shuttle was 7am. That may change depending on the time of year that you go. It was definitely disappointing to have that many other people on the trail with us, however, I would do it all over again for the experience as it was an incredible hike. You may want to look into an alternative hike that I recently read about that is said to also be really great, but, not as crowded or as dangerous. From an article on Utah.com: “Observation Point is a safer alternative to Angels Landing and offers equally spectacular views. If you decide that Angels Landing isn't for you, consider Observation Point instead.” Whatever you decide, I hope you have a great visit to Zion.
You can actually ride a bike into the park before the shuttle even starts for the day, so you'll basically have the park to yourself on the way up. And, a great alternative hike Also along the West Rim Trail (Same Trail) is in the opposite direction from Angels Landing once you get to about Scout's Lookout. Go left instead of right. There's a sign there. Awesome views from that side of the trail, including a different perspective of Angels Landing in the distance. And, there are far less people. Check out this video from some UA-cam Vloggers. It shows you some great views from that side of West Rim Trail. They hike Angels Landing first. @Peter Orison Great idea regarding riding bikes into the canyon to get around the shuttle time limitation. We may take advantage of that next time we visit. I watched the other video though and have to say that it was disappointing to see the couple taking risks by running along the edges and taking pictures near extreme drop-offs. One slip and they're an additional number on the warning sign at the beginning of the trail and another contribution to the reason why this hike has been labeled as being so dangerous. It really can be a safe hike if you keep your wits about you and don't take those kind of risks. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@EddieAtLarge Some of that had to do with the camera angles in reference to where the other person was standing, which made it appear that they were closer to the edge than they actually were. Though not all of them were visual illusions. They did take some unnecessary risks for sure.

Just curious to know would you recommend or not recommend this for a 12 year old? Are kids allowed and if so what is the age requirement?
@Isabel Velez I would only recommend this if your 12 year old child has had a lot of experience hiking and has a mature personality. They will really need to be paying close attention to what they’re doing at all times and be focused on safety for the entire hike. Sadly, there was a 13 year old girl who recently fell to her death in 2018. That being said, the trail can be dangerous for persons of any age if they do not exercise the proper amount of caution. I could not find any info on age restrictions for the hike. I do recall seeing some younger kids hiking up to the Scouts Lookout area, however, I do not remember seeing any kids on the chain section that day. If you do decide to take them, I would recommend keeping their phone for them to remove that distraction and keep them a safe distance away from the cliff edges in any area without chains to hold on to. I do hope you get to hike this trail as it is an amazing experience. Please be safe and have fun!

Honestly, it's not dangerous as couple videos are showing but i would say too many people around the chaines sections can be the most dangerous of the hike.

@Bri I I’ve read that most falls have occurred either before or after the chain sections. Have not seen anything specific for locations.
@@EddieAtLarge Thanks. That actually makes sense. Hikers likely have a heightened sense of caution when they are at the chains. Away from the chains, they might not pay attention to potential dangers, such as the loose sand you pointed out.

Well, here's how they remove the waste: "On Monday, park officials closed the ever-popular West Rim Trail for a few hours as the fecal remains were-ahem-evacuated by helicopter. The drill will be repeated Thursday as the last of the 32 barrels, each weighing 500 pounds, are flown out, emptied and returned." And they also said that a park ranger has to make a daily trek up to the bathrooms to clean them, add chemicals and resupply with toilet paper. Ugh...
Was thinking of doing this tomorrow... until I saw the traffic jam on the way down. All it would take is one large man falling on me.
@M I do wish they would limit the amount of traffic on the chain section of the trail at any one time. It was such a great experience and I am so glad to have been able to hiked it, however, there is definitely an element of danger due to the large number of people on the trail and the limited amount of space. If you decide not to hike Angels Landing, some other options for you may be to take the West Rim traill and only hike up to the Scout Lookout area which is right before the chain section where the Angels Landing hike begins (3.6 mile round trip, 1115' Elevation Gain). It is still a beautiful hike up to that point with amazing views. You may also want to check into the Observation Point hike. I have not hiked that, but, I have read that the views are just as good or better than the Angels Landing Hike, much safer and way less people. Checking the All Trails app, the East Rim to East Mesa trail to Observation Point is closed. It does show that the East Mesa to Observation Point is open though. From what I can see, you can get to this trailhead from outside of the park (coming from the east side). Per the comments on All Trails, you would need to park about a 1/2 mile from the trailhead due to the poor road conditions (unless you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle). Total hike from the trailhead is 6.7 miles round trip with only a 695' Elevation Gain). @@EddieAtLarge Thank you for the info! It's way more crowded here than our experience at Bryce Canyon. We did an evening hike there down into the canyon and except for Wall Street, had the entire canyon to ourselves! Bring a headlamp if you do this!
